Awesome Photo of the Day: Parachuting to Mars

A stunning success

NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this astounding image of the Curiosity Rover descending to the surface of Mars.

NASA’s Curiosity rover and its parachute were spotted by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter as Curiosity descended to the surface on Aug. 5 PDT (Aug. 6 EDT). The High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera captured this image of Curiosity while the orbiter was listening to transmissions from the rover. Curiosity and its parachute are in the center of the white box; the inset image is a cutout of the rover stretched to avoid saturation. The rover is descending toward the etched plains just north of the sand dunes that fringe “Mt. Sharp.” From the perspective of the orbiter, the parachute and Curiosity are flying at an angle relative to the surface, so the landing site does not appear directly below the rover.

The parachute appears fully inflated and performing perfectly. Details in the parachute, such as the band gap at the edges and the central hole, are clearly seen. The cords connecting the parachute to the back shell cannot be seen, although they were seen in the image of NASA’s Phoenix lander descending, perhaps due to the difference in lighting angles. The bright spot on the back shell containing Curiosity might be a specular reflection off of a shiny area. Curiosity was released from the back shell sometime after this image was acquired.

This view is one product from an observation made by HiRISE targeted to the expected location of Curiosity about one minute prior to landing. It was captured in HiRISE CCD RED1, near the eastern edge of the swath width (there is a RED0 at the very edge). This means that the rover was a bit further east or downrange than predicted.

The image scale is 13.2 inches (33.6 centimeters) per pixel.

The choreography of all this, with the lander and two satellites in just the right place at the right minute is just as amazing as the lander itself.

I can't believe this thing landed successfully. When I heard how complicated the plan was, I did not think it would be possible.

10 erik_t  Mon, Aug 6, 2012 10:59:12am

Watching the Pathfinder landing in 1997, the whole thing had a very extemporized feeling. If we get data, then it worked! If we don't, it didn't.

Last night, I don't think there was more than 30 seconds without some sort of update. They even had telemetry during the skycrane insanity brilliance, FFS.

We've come a long way. I don't expect to habitually lose Mars landers anymore.

The more the onboard computers can do the less we have to rely on controlling the landing with a significant communication delay.

It's as soon as you start to feel like these things are routine that the next space shuttle challenger comes along to make you realize just how easy it is for any one of these missions to go wrong. Watching the landing last night it was striking how even a minor mistake in any part of the landing sequence could cost years of work and billions of dollars.

14 Destro  Mon, Aug 6, 2012 11:05:04am

So who won the debate for unmanned Mars missions? Lots of small cheaply made (though with high rate of failure and short lifespan) robots exploring Mars or the big expensive one at a time robots exploring Mars?

But no lives lost with robot missions. And money spent on this even for failed missions is not down the drain.

16 lawhawk  Mon, Aug 6, 2012 11:05:53am

Think about how this photo was done.

You had one space orbiter, which was launched from Earth in 2005 to orbit another planet hundreds of millions of miles away to study it - the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The MRO has been orbit for a couple of years, and once the Curiosity probe was scheduled to reach Mars, the MRO team figured out how to catch Curiosity on the way down and sent the MRO instructions on where and how to photo it with one of its camera systems. They had it timed right to be in the right time and place. And no one would know whether they got it right until minutes after it happened.

The MRO is now used as a communications relay for use by Curiosity, in addition to ongoing photo surveys of the planet.

It's an astounding photo showing the precision of science and technology.

re: #14 Destro

I don't remember that being a "debate".

Overall, for space exploration missions there have been plenty of debates on whether to fund more, smaller projects, or fewer, bigger ones.

But the idea of having roving science laboratories on Mars wasn't really up for debate, IIRC.

There's a pretty big gulf between expecting failure and considering something routine. That's a point that NASA needs to emphasize.

There were some systems that were on the drawing boards before smaller, faster, and cheaper was instituted.

And Spirit and Opportunity were part of the SFC mantra - and they outlived their mission life by years (Opportunity is still working). They were meant to have 90 day mission life. Opportunity has been working consistently since it landed in 2004. Spirit stopped sending back a signal in 2010.

Romney trust continued investments in abortion, stem cells, China, Iran

Romney claims that he told the person running his blind trust to administer it in a way consistent with his public positions on issues.

That was the first mistake. Romney has taken every side of most hot-button issues, so which way should the trust go?

Second, it should have been clear that Romney meant consistent with his new-found conservative values. In that case, it shouldn't take a rock scientist to figure out that the "morning after pill," which conservatives consider a no-no, is off-limits. But Romney invested. Or stem cell research (again he invested). Or in Chinese companies (they even had the word "China" in their names!). Or companies that do business with Iran.

Oopsie.

In fact, according to research published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, they are ten times more likely to molest children than heterosexual men.

Looks like Fox is attacking black US Olympic athletes.

How patriotic.

I'd like to transport those assholes back to the 1968 Olympics and show them some fists in the air above the podium.

OT: Gibson Guitars agrees to pay a fine for illegally importing wood.

Didn't Henry Juszkiewicz go on Beck's show and vow to fight this to the bitter end?

The phrase 'caught dead to rights' comes to mind.

Three of the most unpopular governors in the US. What, did Scott Walker decline?

Wow. Maybe Walker's the veep selectee.

I watched the video of her dancing.

It's a quick little shuffle, nothing lewd or taunting.

I see no problem.

Lots of people do a little shuffle.

She was also wearing blue; should we call her on that?

She did not wrap herself in the flag and scream "USA! USA!"

She just gave the credit to God, which is apparently not enough.

Also, her hair looked fine. No gymnast looks ready for the magazine cover when she is competing.

Not enough red, white, and blue. Literally...

Host Alisyn Camerota suggests that perhaps Americans are less vociferous than we once were about draping ourselves in the flag because our exuberance made other countries uncomfortable. "Do you buy that theory?" she asked:

No, I don't. And frankly, why should we? Every country has the right to cheer for their team. I've been to English soccer matches. And I'm sure that the English men and women are out there cheering loudly in the pubs, and having a great time. And they should. Spain to their team, Greeks for their team, any country. But America is America, and we are a very nationalistic nation.

We've also lost over time that jingoistic feeling. You know, the National Anthem, we sing it at baseball games. I think the National Anthem should be followed with, "Play ball." It's kind of an American thing. We've lost a little of that, you know, saying The Pledge of Allegiance. And I think that plays over into some of this soft acceptance. You know what? Red, white and blue -- wear it. Wave it. Be proud to be an American. It's not a political issue. But they make it a social issue...

There's a meaning behind the red, white, and blue. It's been lost in time. The field of stars. You know, the blood that's been shed. And that's what we need to focus on, and get that out in our country.

I may have to go and lie down.

I would not dismiss Gibson's point over who spared some air time. Gibson got screwed by uneven and nonsensical enforcement of the Lacey act. I have done a few Pages on this, read quite a bit in detail.

But the point stands. With the price of the confiscated wood, the fine and the donation to Fish & Wildlife, Gibson's laying out nearly a half million bucks here.

A privately held company doesn't take a hit like that if they're innocent, IMO.

(And I say this as someone who owns nearly a dozen Gibsons.)

Who knew cheerios were so flammable, they should put a warning on those things.

Also, stupid people shouldn't play with fire...

127 Jadewater  Mon, Aug 6, 2012 1:11:49pm

So. For some strange reason I decided to delve into the sewer and see what the folks at Stormfront had to say about the shooting. I didn't get past the topic listing though except to quickly scan one that talked about stop eating chocolate (since much cocoa comes from Africa). Chocolate sellers be assured though as apparently racist love of chocolate will outweigh any possible racial taint.

Then I close the site. Eyyuuuu. Just the thread titles are awful.
