Democratic Convention to Include Several Republicans

Switch hitting

Well, here’s an unusually brilliant move from the DNC — the Democratic Convention is planned to include several Republicans.

The Republican Party has gone completely insane in the past four years, and putting some of the remaining sane Republicans on the podium (assuming they can actually find any) could be a powerful statement.

Advisers to President Barack Obama are scripting a Democratic National Convention featuring several Republicans in a prime-time appeal to independents — and planning a blistering portrayal of Mitt Romney as a heartless aristocrat who “would devastate the American middle class,” Democratic sources tell POLITICO.

According to convention planning documents, the three-night convention in Charlotte, N.C., early next month will seek to “[e]xpose Mitt Romney as someone who doesn’t understand middle class challenges” while also burnishing “the President’s image as someone whose life story is about fighting for middle class Americans and those working to get into the middle class.”

Meanwhile, if you need any further proof for my assertion about the GOP’s total lack of mental health, here you go: Donald Trump Will Have ‘Memorable’ Role at GOP Convention.

So, sane republicans are crossing the aisle at convention time?

I'm so confused.

2 Kragar  Fri, Aug 10, 2012 11:31:30am

The DNC will have sane members of the opposing party joining them.

The RNC will have David Barton, Ron Paul and Donald Trump.

Advantage: DNC

Memorable role?

Wonder what that means. Also wonder why Romney thinks hanging around with The Donald is a winner.

I'm really glad that this time around, the Democratic convention follows the Republican one.

Late Friday morning on Twitter, Trump suggested he would be doing something other than delivering a speech at the event: "I was asked to speak at the RNC but said no, because I will be doing something much bigger–just watch!"

Trump will parachute from a helicopter hovering over the convention, dressed as the Queen of England.

Donald Trump will zipline down from the roof clad only in a bedazzled loincloth, wielding a giant sparkling torch to light the wickerman effigy of Obama, all the while Wango Tango is being played by a 200 man accordion band.

Memorable.

Just remember - there are Democrats who wont be going to the convention and that means that support for Obama has fallen off a cliff /GOP flacks.

That would ignore that there are GOPers who aren't going to their convention. Now, we have some unnamed prominent GOPers who will be appearing at the DNC convention.

Anyone want to speculate on who it might be? McCain? Snowe? Collins? Huntsman?

I could see Snowe and/or Collins doing it. Huntsman, maybe. I know he and Mitt didn't seem to like each other much during the primaries and Huntsman kept calling him out (in Mandarin, no less!) on stage for being ignorant about world affairs.

No matter what, several prominent Republicans speaking in prime time during the DNC will be a huge coup.

New Polls Find Jump In Support For Obama Over Romney On Foreign Policy

New polls out today show President Obama comfortably leading Mitt Romney in the presidential race, but it looks like in the wake of Romney’s disastrous trip abroad last month (also known as “Romney Shambles“), Americans trust the president more on foreign policy and national security issues, particularly regarding Iran.
...
Romney’s advisers dispute that his recent trip abroad has anything to do with his declining polling numbers. “The impact of the European trip is negligible,” an unnamed adviser said. “Mark my words, there will be another couple of polls next week that potentially say something different.”

Potentially. Right.

Potentially, everyone could decide overnight to just vote for Romney anyways. It could happen potentially.

I thought the fact that neither of the party's last two successful presidents are willing to show their faces at the convention was big, if a bit predictable.

You can be sure that, between now and the DNC, there will be loads of speculation about which "RINOs" it could be when they're not trying to reassure themselves that there's no "real Republican" who'd get caught dead sharing a stage with the Democrats.

Convention planners are considering featuring a centrist Republican leader on at least two of the three nights. Nightly remotes from swing states may include a CEO or “major Republican.” On Wednesday night, a “notable GOP woman” is among the possible participants. And on the final night, Democrats may include a Republican leader — someone like former Sens. John Warner or Chuck Hagel — or a GOP woman.

More details on the RNC convention:

- All of the tables and chairs will be made of 24k solid gold
- Instead of standard toilet paper, attendees will instead use rolls of $1 bills
- In a similar vein, $5 bills will be used for tissues and $10s for napkins
- A giant Fiji water fountain will be placed in the main room
- The backings of all the mens room urinals will contain an image of Barack Obama
- Attendees will be able to (for a small fee) whip performers dressed as OWS protesters with belts and chains
- The event will apparently feature a record number of real police officers as well as people impersonating police officers. Prizes if you can correctly guess which is which!
- NO recycle bins period.

Bush the Elder pissed me off mightily in his day, but I think he does what he thinks is right, and doesn't worry about what people think. It's the better side of the aristocratic indifference that Mitt makes look so shabby.

It would be rather cool. Unlikely, though.

Back in 1995 when GW Bush was Governor of Texas he had a renewable energy program he was pushing. I was with Shell at the time and was asked to serve on the advisory committee. We had an aggressive timeline and many meetings in Austin. The Governor would routinely attend for few minutes usually in mid afternoon to urge us to consensus. We he had a top aid working with us and multiple times we asked if the Governor would join us for dinner. She would say nothing and it never happened. When it was over I asked her why he never joined us for dinner and she answered that the Governor much prefers to have dinner with his wife each night and rarely misses with her. I was actually very impressed with that.

I don't think it's time yet for Romney's campaign to panic -

But that doesn't mean that it isn't happening. How else does this get explained:

BOSTON -- Top aides to the GOP's presumptive nominee Mitt Romney were at a loss today to explain the candidate's recent slide in a series of national polls which show Romney dropping anywhere from seven to nine points behind the president as the nominating conventions approach at the end of this month.

"It’s the middle of summer. It’s the doldrums. It’s the middle of the Olympics,” a senior Romney adviser told reporters gathered for a briefing at the campaign's Boston headquarters. “There's not been any national news, anything that would push these numbers from minus-three to minus-nine points. That's a huge shift. You have to have some kind of precipitating event to move numbers like that."

So a drop for one candidate relative to another is because of the summer doldrums?

Whaaaaaaa?

I'm going to be THAT GUY and say that the fact that Bush Senior wanted to have dinner with his wife is a good indicator of him as a person, independent of the fact that his ability to do so in that situation was an indicator of unfair privilege.

Six hearses carrying the deceased leave the Oak Creek High School after the funeral and memorial service for the six victims of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin mass shooting in Oak Creek, Wis. , Friday, Aug 10, 2012. The public service was held in the Oak Creek High School. Three other people were wounded in the shooting last Sunday at the temple. Wade Michael Page, 40, killed five men and one woman, and injured two other men. Authorities say Page then ambushed the first police officer who responded, shooting him nine times and leaving him in critical condition. A second officer then shot Page in the stomach, and Page took his own life with a shot to the head.

Stuff like this is what makes me so sad about how our education system does not make teaching critical thinking and development of a "BS detector" in the youth of our society of a much higher priority. Once that happened a lot of this playground-level projection, MBF, and emotional laden crap would hopefully go away since it would be proven ineffective and preferably have a negative effect from the voters feeling insulted at being presented with it.

The guy initially greeted me with enthusiasm, embarrassingly so actually - he'd seen some work I'd done on the web years ago and was clearly a big fan. A few hours and abut 1/2 bottle of whisky later, he had some kind of temporary alcohol-induced psychosis, thinking I was the antichrist etc. I spent the next 2 hours sitting in the caravan in the garden waiting for my friends to try to calm him down, but to no avail - eventually a taxi was called to take me to my friend's briother's house across town for the night.

Next day the dude was right as rain, and very apologetic about the whole thing (really nice guy actually, and totally sane normally). His wife told me it happens occasionally with the whisky- never at any other time - and that she was usually the one he got the funny ideas about.

Advantage: DNC

I agree, and the crazier the Republican party gets the harder it will be for them to attract more sane voters. They're going to have to either moderate their tone soon, or loose support. Unfortunately, the only other major party is the Democrats right now and I disagree with them on some important things as well. That's life I guess.

Barton has many supporters, though few of them are historians. One is Mat Staver, dean of Liberty University's Law School.

"I think he's a corrective to historians," Staver says. "In fact, I would put him against any historian and would have no question who would win in a debate."

Barton says he has a policy of not debating anyone. He adds that he doesn't care if historians disagree with him: He believes his trove of documents proves his points — although historians have seen the same documents and draw different conclusions. Barton also believes his critics might be envious, since his books — and world view — sell so well.

"I don't know if it's jealousy or liberalism," he says. "I certainly know the guys who come after me have made it very clear usually in the introductions of their stuff that they disagree with me, and my religious faith, and my view on America."

183 Gus  Fri, Aug 10, 2012 1:43:26pm

The RNC sounds like it's going to be a rather square and dorky convention. They might as well have Lawrence Welk music for entertainment. Blue hairs and all.

184 HappyWarrior  Fri, Aug 10, 2012 1:43:40pm

I'm real interested in seeing who the high profile Republican the Democrats may have speak at their convention. Chuck Hagel doesn't surprise me since he was critical of Bush's foreign policy and his wife supported Obama as early as 2008. But John Warner would. Sure, Warner was a moderate Republican during his time in the senate but this is a guy who I thought despite his disagreements with the increasingly conservative Virginia state GOP was someone who would stay with his party. He's a decent guy though. Always has my respect for refusing to support Oliver North's senate candidacy and opposing Bork(Romney's legal adviser) being picked to the USSC. The Democrats seem to have the right idea at their convention. The Republicans meanwhile have given their keynote spot to a pompous jerk, Christie and will be prominently displaying King Birther, Donald Trump. I can't see how that will appeal to independent voters at all.

185 nines09  Fri, Aug 10, 2012 1:43:55pm

I wonder if anyone will have the balls or intelligence to walk out of the GOP convention when and if David Barton speaks.

Barton is a man who thinks John Calvin is more important to American belief than Thomas Jefferson. If Barton had his way, we'd be a theocracy where anyone who isn't a conservative Protestant Christian would be at the least harassed and most imprisoned. The fact that Mike Huckabee wants the American people listening to this guy "with a gun to their heads" shows you how twisted both those guys are.

What I worry about is if Romney loses, the nutcases being convinced that the problem was they weren't conservative enough or as we say in layman's terms not batshit enough. Inevitably, the GOP is going to have one of their own back in the White House. They really need to start building a more saner party and making David Barton part of the platform committee and giving a known birther and blowhard in Trump a prominent role at the convention is no way to do that.

McCain? Snowe? Collins? Huntsman?

No way McCain but honestly Snowe wouldn't shock me. They specified a GOP woman and given Olympia Snowe's retirement was surprising, it wouldn't totally shock me if she ended up repudiating her own party. I'm amazed she lasted there as long as she has. Both her and Susan Collins.

This is exactly the response I heard from people after 2008. Their logic goes like this:

Americans are conservative
Republicans put forth a conservative nominee
Democrats put forth a liberal nominee
But Woops!! The Republican nominee isn't conservative enough.
Therefore Americans elect the more liberal nominee.

This makes sense to some people.

Sorry to smash your illusions, bud. That's exactly what capitalism is about. That whole "let the workers protect their work" thing? That's socialism.

You can still have capitalism that isn't based upon unfettered greed of the 0.01%. Unfortunately the vulture capitalist groups like Bain don't think about what's good for the nation that provides their largest market and infrastructure for the use of their products.

I think Romney's sunk...30 years of "buy American" campaigns aren't going to just disappear from people's minds overnight, no matter how much GOP shills hope for it to happen.
