Okay...who needs BLR when you have Mitt Romney? Now he's accusing our overspending president of spending too little?
When it comes to fiscal issues, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want voters to know they’re collectively disgusted by what they see as a reckless government spending spree under President Obama the past three years.
But in a twist, they’re also contending that Obama’s government hasn’t stepped in enough to help Americans. It’s the political equivalent of “This food is terrible — and such small portions!”
I think their strategy is simply to say such asinine shit that people walk into the polls so confused and dizzy that they simply vote for them in an attempt to stab their names to death with the punch tool.

'Jefferson Lies' Author Negotiating New Edition for Glenn Beck’s Mercury Ink
David Barton, author of The Jefferson Lies, which Thomas Nelson pulled from shelves last week, is in negotiations to publish a new edition of the book with Mercury Ink, Glenn Beck’s publishing arm. Barton told PW he bought back around 17,000 copies of the current edition and will sell out of those before the publication of the new edition. He said Nelson would not give him the digital version: “They just pulled that down, and we are going to have to reconvert it if we want to sell an e-book” of the current edition; he added he has not yet decided whether to do that. “It depends on how quickly we think we can get the new edition out.”

Gosh this sounds so familiar for some reason...
Over the course of the campaign, Canadians have gotten a glimpse of what a PQ government might look like. The separatist party has already announced its intentions to toughen French language laws and to ban all civil servants from wearing or exposing overt religious symbols.
And on Thursday we learned that they would selectively disregard Supreme Court of Canada rulings.
Speaking about the policy that would ban religious symbols, a PQ candidate says his party wouldn't hesitate to use the constitutional notwithstanding clause to override any legal argument that the plan violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
"Our boss is not the Supreme Court of Canada — our boss is the will of the people of Quebec," said Jean-Francois Lisée, a PQ candidate and longtime party adviser, in an interview with the Canadian Press.
"We do not want to legislate while taking into account Canadian judges. We will legislate considering the interests of Quebecers."
In addition, PQ leader Pauline Marois has said that she'll lead with what she calls "sovereigntist governance."A PQ government will demand that the federal government turn over its powers and all related funding on matters such as employment insurance, communications and culture, and economic regional development.
Hmmm, a political party that wants to ignore the Supreme Court, selectively ban religious symbols and terminate Federal Power across a range of areas...what an original idea...
I can't believe we (meaning Canada) are about to get into this mess again. For those not familiar with Canadian history there has long been a movement in Quebec to secede from the rest of Canada. The reasons are complex but the short version is: The separatists believe that Quebec does not get fair treatment from the Federal government as well as the rest of Canada (which just happens to be mainly English speaking).
Back in 1995 the PQ (the same party discussed above) was in power in Quebec and a province wide referendum was held to determine whether or not the people of Quebec wanted to remain part of Canada or not. The "NO" side (as in No, we do not want to separate from Canada) won by a narrow margin and the PQ lost power a few years later and hasn't gained it back since...now it looks like they have a chance.
This should be fun although I doubt it will go anywhere. There have been rumblings about Quebec separation for decades stretching back long before I was born and the 1995 Refrendum was as close as we got to any real official move in that direction.

And the setup is pretty cheesy.
Over the last three days, Ryan’s made the exact same teleprompter joke at least three times. The formula is simple: As Ryan is talking about Obama and the changes coming under a Romney-Ryan administration, someone in the audience yells out that Ryan’s using no teleprompter. He acknowledges the supporter, repeats the joke and everyone has a good laugh.
Gee, what are the odds that three different people in three completely different crowds would yell out that Ryan isn't using a prompter?

Friday Night News Dump
Paul Ryan and his wife, Janna, paid an effective tax rate of 15.9% in 2010 and 20% in 2011, according to tax returns provided by the Romney-Ryan campaign to the Journal Sentinel on Friday.
In 2010, Ryan and his wife paid $34,233 in federal taxes on $215,417 of adjusted gross income.
In 2011, they paid $64,764 in federal taxes on $323,416 of adjusted gross income.
[---]
in 2010, the couple reported $39,013 in income from "rental real estate, royalties, partnerships, S corporations, trust, etc."
In 2011, the Ryan reported $116,143 in income from the same category of sources.
A Ryan aide told the Journal Sentinel last week that much of Ryan's investment income is from holdings that belonged to his wife.
"As these are properties Rep. Ryan 'married into,' for lack of a better term," Ryan spokesman Kevin Seifert said last week, "he does not play an active role in them and has no plans to."
Seifert said last week that the Ryans' investments include several companies that lease land and mineral rights to energy companies.
Ryan also has assets passed down through his own family.
Federal financial disclosure forms show that last year Ryan, 42, had assets of between $2.1 million and $7.8 million - figures that include a trust valued at between $1 million and $5 million that belonged to his wife after her mother died in 2010.
[---]The Ryans filed a corrected return in 2011 after their original return understated their income by $61,122.
According to campaign spokesman Brendan Buck, that additional income related to a holding called the Prudence Little Living Trust:
"The required K-1 form from the Prudence Little Living Trust had not been received by the filing deadlines for the PFD (Personal Financial Disclosure) and the tax return, and therefore was omitted on the originally-filed documents. When the K-1 form was later received, the omission was realized and corrected," said Buck.
OK I guess its easy to forget about over 60,000 of income. /

A couple of days ago I mentioned I've been off my meds for a few days. Well now I'm severely dizzy if I move my head and I've got the 'brain zaps'.
Sounds like Effexor. Or maybe Cymbalta. Effexor worked like a charm for me, but the reason it worked is because Effexor has a tendency to induce manic episodes in bi-polars. Incidentally, this is how we discovered I'm bi-polar. Luckly, I didn't get the CRAZIES. I did, however, get really impulsive. For example, I became convinced I was The Most Interesting Man In The World. I don't always hit on married women, but when I do, it's because I'm taking Effexor.
But OH GOD the brain shivers. I would get them within hours of missing a dose. The dizziness with turning the head. Mine was like little "pulses" of dizziness (in sync with the electro-zaps), not a sustained feeling. Very unpleasant, but you'd be surprised what you can get used to. Eventually I decided I'd had enough of that, and ended up with a better doc and actually effective treatment.

re: #78 The Ghost of a Flea
You don't get to commit battery (physical) because someone else committed assault (non-physical).
Spitting on someone is physical, and if you assault someone I am allowed to act to stop the assault. Further, the loony protestor wasn't hurt beyond a scratch, so its hard to claim excessive force.
82 | Killgore Trout Fri, Aug 17, 2012 5:05:20pm |
re: #79 Dark_Falcon
Justly so, since saliva can carry germs and is just plain nasty besides. Of course, if someone was sicken by having been spit upon they or their insurance company could sue for any losses they incurred.
Spitting assault also caries a 6 month jail sentence.

Spitting is simple assault; simple assault is
Simple assault can be distinguished without the intent of injury upon another person. The violation of one's personal space or touching in a way the victim deemed inappropriate can be simple assault. In common law states an assault is not committed by merely, for example, swearing at another; without threat of battery, there can be no assault.
And the lady had to be tended in an ambulance for "minor injuries, including the scratch."

Likely neither of them will be charged with much if anything. If they were men maybe, but the law normally goes easier on women* and for good reason.

The video clearly shows the lady spitting on the Romney supporter unprovoked. I think legally that's considered assault. The fact that she got a scratch on her neck seems to the the result of the assault she initiated. The spitter is not the victim here.
Touching someone without their permission is assault too. It's the other two women who initiate physical contact and get in her face.

Touching someone you don't know isn't acceptable. Touching someone without their permission isn't acceptable. In all circumstances, barring some kind of medical emergency. "She was being rude" doesn't hack it.
I think spitting is disgusting and disrepectful in the extreme, and don't approve of Mrs Hogland's behavior...and think she should get some kind of legal penalty...but it is not okay to take hold of a person like that.

I just watched the video in full screen mode (the one Ghost of a Flea linked to) and as Hoglund spoke it showed the other old woman putting her left hand (with the water bottle) on Hoglund's arm as she aggressively leaned into to her face just inches from her nose, at which point Hoglund spit in her face. She then backed away from Hoglund, hit her on the side of the face with her right hand, grabbed her by the collar & yanked on it, then hit her on top of the head, at which point she was pulled off of Hoglund.
Hoglund was wrong to be disruptive, and even though the other woman was WAY inside her personal space, she shouldn't have spit. Still, the other woman is the one who got physically aggressive first. Her post-spitting blows and grabbing of Hoglund's collar (undoubtedly where the scratches came from) hardly constitutes self-defense since Hoglund never once laid a hand on the woman—it was pure retaliation.
You must've watched a completely different video than I did.

Bunch of old ladies getting their crank on. The spitting was pretty ridiculous and uncalled for but so is the idea that people feel it's okay to touch others without their permission, turn them around and get in their face without taking ownership for escalating the situation. The spitting victim was also well within range where she could have been letting spittle fly accidentally as she yelled at Hoglund. That's often how shit like this happens.

That having been said, I would not have put my hand on the other person to begin with.
And if that woman had spat on my face? I would have lifted a magazine or other paper to block her from doing it again and then demanded her removal from the building. I would not strike an elderly woman, period. To do so would be honorless.

re: #76 What Would Spalding Gray Do?
I've had this before, but usually at a lower level. This time I just stopped taking my Effexor rather than slowly weaning myself off of them.
Funny that your response to Effexor is so dissimilar to mine. I tend to have larger swings without Effexor than with. My problem with Effexor is the incessant suicidal ideation.
BTW, I Am The Most Interesting Man In The World.

"Then why are you against Planned Parenthood? If women are in need, you're getting rid of an organization..."
Yep, and she was spot on right. Good for her, she's been paying attention. She most likely knows that WisGOP was anything but gracious towards women during their 'special session on jobs' where they focused on social issues. Ryan and Romney kicking off their Romney for women bullshit express in Wisconsin probably has more than few 83 year old women fighting off the urge to huck a loogie. Especially after the blitzkrieg of all out lies from team GOP that saturated the airwaves over the last year.

The video clearly shows the lady spitting on the Romney supporter unprovoked. I think legally that's considered assault. The fact that she got a scratch on her neck seems to the the result of the assault she initiated. The spitter is not the victim here.
Unprovoked? The other old lady, who was originally not right next to Hoglund, moved right into her personal space and put her face right in Hoglund's face as she was yelling at her. (I'm assuming she was yelling because that's what it looked like without the sound - I've got no sound since I didn't bring my speakers for my out of town work...kicking myself every day for it)

Oh, I'm sure the Dems would spend more now if it seemed like any of the Repub's crazily dishonest attacks were working. So far, they just seem content to let Romney spend his money, and hold back for the real spending spree.
I hope that's the case, but the money isn't quite flowing in like 4 years ago. If the Dems were even with the GOP in funds, I'd be pretty confident that everything from convention speaker Trump calling the Chinese "motherfuckers" (that will help with the Asian vote) to the absolute joke of Romney saying, "I haven't paid less than 13% in taxes" would be sufficiently known across the country that the absurdity of the current Repub Party would be so obvious that their electoral viability would diminish. Then they'd be forced to reform into the somewhat pragmatic governing party they once were.

Spongebob Squarepants Is Gay, Warns Ukraine Commission
...The Ukraine's National Expert Commission for Protecting Public Morality released the report on Thursday, criticizing several popular television programs as harmful to the country and proposing a nationwide ban on the shows.
Spongebob was joined on the blacklist by Family Guy, The Simpsons, Futurama, and even Teletubbies. Teletubbies, according to the report, "deliberately aims to create subnormal [men], who spend all day in front of the television with their mouths open swallowing all types of information." Such behavior, the report says, is the "psychology of losers."
According to a psychologist quoted in the study, after watching the shows, children between 3 and 5 years old "pull faces and make jokes in front of adults they don't know, laugh out loud and repeat nonsense phrases in a brazen manner."...

In 2011 Ukraine adopted reforms to facilitate closer association with the European Union, adopting laws on access to information and refugee protection. Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s politically-motivated trial, conviction, and imprisonment jeopardized Ukraine’s prospects of concluding an EU Association Agreement, and the arrest and trial of multiple former government officials undermined confidence in the judiciary’s independence. Despite legislative reforms, the situation for journalists and media outlets deteriorated, and civil society activists were threatened by law enforcement officials in what appeared to be retaliation for their work. Each year, tens of thousands of patients with advanced cancer in Ukraine unnecessarily suffer from severe pain because pain treatment is often inaccessible. Asylum seekers remain vulnerable to arbitrary detention, police harassment, and torture.

A cross shouldn't mean anything more than as a symbol. A specific one may have historical or artistic importance but other than that shouldn't receive any greater thought than any other bit of private property. If it becomes more than a simple symbol for a Christian, they should be examining their soul for why their making an idol out of the thing. Though I'll admit that particular bit of idolatry is something easy for Christians, myself included, to fall into.

Ukraine Bill Proposes Prison for Positive Gay Depictions
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — If a group of Ukrainian lawmakers succeeds in its mission, television shows and movies like “Brokeback Mountain” that sympathetically portray gay men and lesbians will be banned. So will gay pride parades.
The recently introduced bill, supported by the president’s representative in Parliament, would impose prison terms of up to five years and unspecified fines for spreading the “propaganda of homosexuality,” which the measure defines as positive depictions of gays in public.
It has prompted outrage from rights organizations in Ukraine and beyond that condemn the bill as a throwback to Soviet times, when homosexuality was a criminal offense. They also warn that the bill could lead to an increase in H.I.V. infections in Ukraine by driving gay people underground...

Why not? I'm not saying she has no right to protest, I'm not even saying she can't protest topless. What I am saying is that her right to protest ended where that chainsaw cut into that wood. She did not have the right to destroy other people's property to make her point, especially since those other people were not the ones who committed the wrong she is protesting.

Except for the last sentence, I've said exactly that many times. I've also made similar points about flags.

As far as the latter, the prevalence of widespread racism and anti-Semitism was clearly a concern, especially in the Ukraine, which has a well-earned reputation for a lack of tolerance of minorities and foreigners. Poland, on the other hand, is already a member of the European Union and has made significant strides in combatting racism, and especially anti-Semitism.

It is the Ukraine, so factor in culture lag.
I do admire their fine porn export business.
There's some potentially shady shenanigans surrounding that:
Quoth the US Department of State:
UKRAINE (Tier 2)
Ukraine is a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children trafficked transnationally for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation and forced labor. Ukrainian women are trafficked to Russia, Poland, Turkey, the Czech Republic, the United Arab Emirates, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Greece, Israel, Spain, Lebanon, Hungary, Slovak Republic, Cyprus, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Serbia, Argentina, Norway, and Bahrain. The majority of Ukrainian labor trafficking victims were men exploited in Russia, the Czech Republic and Poland, primarily forced to work as construction laborers, sailors, and factory and agriculture workers. There are indications Ukraine is a destination for people from neighboring countries trafficked for forced labor and sexual exploitation. In addition, trafficking occurs within Ukraine; men and women are trafficked within the country for the purposes of labor exploitation in the agriculture and service sectors, commercial sexual exploitation, and forced begging. Ukrainian children are trafficked both internally and transnationally for commercial sexual exploitation, forced begging, and involuntary servitude in the agriculture industry. An IOM survey released in December 2006 concluded that since 1991, approximately 117,000 Ukrainians had been forced into exploitative situations in Europe, the Middle East, and Russia.
The Government of Ukraine does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. While there was little evidence of efforts to curb trafficking complicity of government officials and of concrete steps to protect and assist trafficking victims at the national level, local governments made some progress on victim assistance. The government also made modest, but tangible, progress in improving the punishment of convicted traffickers, prosecuting labor trafficking, training the judiciary, and carrying out prevention activities.Ukraine does not punish victims for unlawful acts committed as a direct result of being trafficked, but sex trafficking victims are incorrectly characterized as “willing prostitutes” and denied confidentiality. Although more victims are reportedly willing to participate in investigations against their traffickers, a weak witness protection system and a bias against sex trafficking victims still discourage many from testifying in court. Courts in the Ivano-Frankivsk region are implementing a pilot program to develop a modern witness protection program. The government does not provide foreign victims with legal alternatives to removal to countries in which they may face hardship or retribution.

Read this tragic story.
Pregnant Dominican teen at center of abortion debate dies
(CNN) -- A pregnant leukemia patient who became a flashpoint in the abortion debate in the Dominican Republic died Friday morning, a hospital official told CNN.
The 16-year-old, who had been undergoing chemotherapy, died from complications of the disease, said Dr. Antonio Cabrera, the legal representative for the hospital.
Her case stirred debate in her country, as her life was potentially at risk because of anti-abortion laws in the Dominican Republic.
Doctors were hesitant to give her chemotherapy because such treatment could terminate the pregnancy -- a violation of the Dominican Constitution, which bans abortion. Some 20 days after she was admitted to the hospital, she finally began receiving treatment.
The patient, whose identity has not been released because she's a minor and because of the hospital's privacy policy, was 13 weeks pregnant.
The teen's body did not respond to the chemotherapy, and her condition worsened overnight, Cabrera said.
Her body also rejected a blood transfusion on Thursday, he said.
The patient then suffered a miscarriage early Friday, followed by cardiac arrest, he said. Doctors were unable to revive her.
Representatives from the Dominican Ministry of Health, the Dominican Medical College, the hospital and the girl's family had talked for several days before deciding to go forward with the chemotherapy.
The case sparked renewed debate over abortion in the Dominican Republic, with some lawmakers calling on officials to reconsider the abortion ban.
At the time that treatment started, Rosa Hernandez, the girl's mother, said she had been trying to convince doctors and the Dominican government to make an exception so that her daughter's life could be saved.
"My daughter's life is first. I know that (abortion) is a sin and that it goes against the law ... but my daughter's health is first," Hernandez said.
According to Article 37 of the Dominican Constitution, "the right to life is inviolable from the moment of conception and until death." Dominican courts have interpreted this as a strict mandate against abortion. Article 37, passed in 2009, also abolished the death penalty.
In effect, the very definition of the Personhood laws. This is what it means to you. The Republicans and Religious conservatives have big words about the Obama administration of meddling in their lives with health care laws but on the other hand they want to be in the driving seat when it concerns a woman's life! If you want that, please vote for Romney and Ryan. All other people will have to move to Canada to lead a decent live.

Right, you just support turning a blind eye to people who grab political opponents, purposefully get inches away from their face and yell at them vehemently enough that hot breath and spittle could quite easily hit them in the face.
You deliberately ignore, minimize and dismiss the initial physical provocation and focus on the admittedly wrongheaded retaliation. This is why it's impossible to take you all that seriously anymore, you're wearing obvious blinders.

Assange’s Special Asylum: Why Ecuador Isn’t Nice to Anyone Else
The government of Rafael Correa extends its hospitality to the WikiLeaks founder but is accused of harassing unfriendly journalists and may extradite a whistle-blower from Belarus to face grave charges in the country described as "Europe's last dictatorship"
But I thought they had a great human rights record! Assange said so!
(I suspect Assange thinks anyone who is nice to him has a great human rights record. He is the Human. He has the Rights. Like Lord Vetinari, but less classy.)

Message for Charles!
TECH QUESTION.
Charles,
I have some problems with the view of the page in Internet Explorer. The buttons above (Strike, bold, italic, quote and link) don't appear anymore. I tried visiting the site with Chrome and there the buttons do appear.
Now, when I log into the site via Chrome it automatically logs me out in Internet Explorer, and vice versa. How come it's not possible to stay logged in with different browsers??
And what can be done in IE to make the buttons appear again?
Could you give a + kudo to this message if you read it, so I won't have to post it again.
Come to think of it, another bug in Chrome is that the Kudo refresh button points to the main site URL of little green footballs.

My question about "personhood" is: You can't force anyone to provide blood for a life saving transfusion, or give any other part of their body to save someone else's life. So, if you have an embryo or fetus who is totally dependent on the mother's body for their life, why does that fetus have the right to another person's body that no one else does?
Because sluts that's why.

What happened wasn't simple, but that the Castro brother and 'Che' Guevara proved themselves to be totalitarian monsters is clear. They have earned the great majority of the hate aimed at them.
I liken it to what happened in Russia and France, the revolution got devoured by power hungry people who chose to ignore what the revolution was all about and they ended up becoming what they rebelled against- tyrants.

The problem with that analogy is that Castro himself instigated the revolution when he landed in Cuba with about a company of followers who had returned with him from his exile in Mexico. His "July 26th Movement" was the revolution's principal organization. Castro and his ideology were what the revolution was about, despite what some others within his movement felt at the time.

I have trouble with blanket hatred of people like Castro and Guevara because of the need for humans to rebel against tyranny. What happened there isn't simple. My fear is that the Arab Spring's image will change from a justified event to a vilified event because of the Muslim Brotherhood's inherent evil in the eyes of too many conservatives in NA.
Some folks really don't like the idea that people will take a dangerous gamble when life gets too horrid and oppressive. It's much easier to sit in an armchair and speculate that the Current Evil (such as Hosni "Your Source For Rape-based Prison Torture, Expert in Expropriation of Public Funds" Mubarak) is better than in future Anticipated Evil.
This is particularly irksome when mouthed by Neocon puppet-master-wannabes that at once want to argue that it's good to have a monster on a leash, but then get all "who could have anticipated?" when the revolt against said monster doesn't take the form of a US-style democracy.

I agree, but I feel that was not what Nolan saw the line as meaning: Nolan had Dent say that as meaning that after a while the compromises and non-clarities of politics combined with the attacks of their opponents will make any political leader look like a villain. Harvey Dent reasons from that that he must act swiftly and boldly, while he still has the public on his side.

I'll defer to you here because I don't know much about the Cuban revolution but my broad point is revolutions however justified they may be sometimes and tragically I must say end up resulting in more brutal tyranny than what was seen before. I think overthrowing the Baustia regime was justified but the fact that Castro's regime ended up just as if not more autocratic is something I find tragic. That's what I was getting at with Russia and France.

Oh, yeah that's definitely true. I didn't mean to say the three were exactly the same but it fitting the broad view of what happened in the other two nations. Which thinking about it makes me all the more grateful that we had Washington as one of our leaders in our revolutionary days. Communism wasn't Castro et al's goal. Deposing Batista was. The communist ideology as a means of egalitarianism came later. The inability of communism to actually provide the promises its proponents claimed was reality kicking the people in the gonads. That's true. It's just that that doesn't mean that we're wrong when we say it probably won't go well.
This is what people really didn't seem to get about those of us who were dubious about Egypt from the start. It's not that I don't want Egypt to have nice things. It's not that I thought Mubarak was any prize. It's not even that I didn't have a great sense of good cheer when he finally toppled. It's just that wishing like hell for a good outcome does not make one, and whipped cream and nuts on top doesn't necessarily mean chocolate ice cream underneath.
I can't fault a single soul that was out there screaming for revolution (except for the ones who were involved in assaulting foreign journalists and, you know, folks like that.) But a new government in Egypt is not like clapping to save Tinkerbell. Just believing in it doesn't help very much. Especially me believing in it, from half a world away.
That said, despite my concern about the Brotherhood having forgotten all of their pre-campaign promises (the chief one being not to have any campaign promises), I am holding out some reserved hope that Morsi may have some redeeming qualities.

There's a bit more subtlety there than what you've suggested. The fetus isn't there because of it's own actions, and the woman usually did have some input into the fetus's existence. (I don't include rape in that, btw, the woman has no control during rape) That means ethically it can't be viewed as a simple parasite so there will be a point where it should be recognized as a human.
During the time the zygote/blastocyst/fetus is just a bunch of cells, making it no more than just a potential human, its personhood is a silly concept. However, waiting till birth to give the fetus some human rights is equally silly.
The current crop of Republicans need to adopt a more practical and scientific concept of how to define a human and stop trying to force their religious views on others.

That's similar to what the following part of my comment was saying.
The tyranny was a result of having the wrong person in the wrong position. The most effective leader in a rebellion is the worst leader after the rebellion.
That said, I still think his original goal wasn't to put himself in power but to free the population shit on by Batista. Unfortunately, many times goals change and humans are great at rationalizing their desires. Don't forget that Che, a friend of Castro, was part of political reform in Guatemala and was really bothered by the squalor and pain he saw around him, yet when in power in Cuba, did some really villainous things.
