Romney/Ryan: Campaign of the Big Lie

The hoodwink strategy
Politics • Views: 25,686

Romney and Ryan are lying about Obama’s Medicare plan, but naturally, in this campaign of the Big Lie, they’re just going to keep doing it even after being debunked by multiple sources: Ryan Stands by $716 Billion Medicare Criticism.

Would you buy a used car from this man?“I heard Mitt Romney deride the $700 billion cuts in Medicare that the president achieved through health care reform,” Obama’s deputy campaign manager, Stephanie Cutter, said last Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation. “And interestingly enough, Paul Ryan protected those cuts in his budget.”

At his rally in The Villages, Florida, earlier, Ryan leveled the charge to which Cutter was referring.

“Here’s what the president won’t tell you about his Medicare plan, about Obamacare,” Ryan said. “The president raids $716 billion from the Medicare program to pay for the Obamacare program.”

The non-partisan fact-checker Politifact.com has rated a nearly identical charge by Romney, that Obama has “robbed” Medicare of the amount as “mostly false.” It also found Cutter’s assessment of the similarities - but not the description of reductions as “cuts” - between the Romney and Obama’s plans to be “true.”

Asked in the Saturday interview to respond to that general point, Ryan said, “Well there’s a lot to sort through. Look, we’re offering leadership, we’re offering solutions. The president is not. The president has a failed economic agenda - 23 million people are still looking for work.”

Ryan, still "uninformed" about the stimulus (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009).

In his Fox interview, Ryan also echoed what he said in a Thursday paper statement, when he said he took responsibility for letters he signed and sent to federal agencies in support of stimulus-funded grants requested by a non-profit organization in his state.

"My office sends tens of thousands of letters to versus federal agencies and this goes through what we call a case work system and we treat it as a case work for constituents," he said. "I take full responsibility for it, whether it's my intention to send letters supporting stimulus, this doesn't change the fact that the stimulus was a bomb, it didn't work, it's a boondoggle and borrowing and spending, spending on things like Solyndra, that doesn't create a job."

The Congressional Budget Office says otherwise:

CBO estimates that ARRA’s policies had the following effects in the second quarter of calendar year 2011 compared with what would have occurred otherwise:

They raised real (inflation-adjusted) gross domestic product by between 0.8 percent and 2.5 percent,

Lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.5 percentage points and 1.6 percentage points,

Increased the number of people employed by between 1.0 million and 2.9 million, and

Increased the number of full-time-equivalent (FTE) jobs by 1.4 million to 4.0 million compared with what would have occurred otherwise. (Increases in FTE jobs include shifts from part-time to full-time work or overtime and are thus generally larger than increases in the number of employed workers).

I guess Paul was afraid that if he actually supported the Stimulus politically, he'd have to deal with some even more idiotic Teabagger saying he wasn't a real conservative but at the same time he had to get the funds for his district. But I also did the cabbage soup diet this week, which is a good jump-starter for losing weight.

Because it makes you upchuck?

That's why, when I go to church and the priest offers me "The body of Christ" I reply, "Fuckin' A!"

I had a friend bow and salute a priest during a funeral when the wafer was offered.

You ever notice how all UFOs look like 57 Chevys with a coat of primer paint?

I thought I had mine parked at the farm.

So freaking weird. Watching right wing logic at work here. So we have one Larry Bailey who's been trying to Swiftboat Obama. He's a former Navy SEAL. He's also letting us all know that he's a former Navy SEAL quite often. Here's the catch or the wingnut logic. They think that if you say, for example, "former Navy SEAL Larry Bailey is a joke," that you are disrespecting Navy SEALS.

re: #54 darthstar

[snip] I was at 262 in March. Dropped a quick 20lbs, but then got stuck at 242-243 [snip]

Long ago I wrote down those weights that I could recall having been at, over many years, and found that they seemed to fit a geometric progression. My characteristic ratio was a factor of about 1.08, for one stable weight to the next higher one.

I note that 262 / 242.5 is almost exactly that ratio.

I've noticed that ratio with several of my personal friends and acquaintences, so I'm convinced there must be some underlying physical reason for this pattern. However, I've never found anything supportive of that idea in scientific literature.

Please tell me if these numbers (+/-1) seem familiar to you:
262
242.6
224.6
208
192.6
178.3
165.1

Yes, as a matter of fact they do. I was at 195ish when I met my wife, then got my thyroid zapped and went to about 210 for a while, then 225...interesting progression. Thanks for the feedback.

Coming from the same guys who mocked the Purple Heart simply because they hated John Kerry, that's rich.

222.
218
208
198
179

Those are my common sticking points.
[edit] missed one.

Let me start with 208:
208 * 1.08 = 224.6 (close to 222)
208
208 / 1.08 = 192.6 (not so close to 198)
Dividing again by 1.08 gives 178.3 (close to 179)

Were you really at 218 for a while as a "stable" weight, or was that while you were trying to change?

I was at 218 for years until I went on a diet. I got stuck at 198 and didn't get any lower until I started hapkido.

After I quit hapkido because I started taking anti-depressants, 208 and 222 became the sticking points going up in weight.

However, my activity level between 218 and 222 was quite different. I exercised every morning and evening while I was 218, so it may not be a good comparison.

re: #99 b_sharp

Since you were at 218 "for years", presumably while not trying to gain or lose, I'd guess that your next lower stable weight would be about 202; the next higher about 235.

I'm not suggesting that "stable weights" should be consistent from person to person. That both you and darthstar mentioned 208 is probably insignificant, I think.

Possibly, but numbers are fun.

This particular GOP lie is one they have been pushing long before anyone was paying attention to Paul Ryan, in fact since the Affordable Care Act was being debated in the House and Senate. Then it was the claim that the money saved from the future projected growth of Medicare costs to the government was stealing "$500 billion from Medicare" -- and they kept repeating it then no matter how many times it was debunked.

When AARP supported the law because it extends the fiscal sustainability of Medicare and increases Medicare benefits, and removes the gap in Part D coverage, the GOP responded with a smear campaign against AARP.

With Medicare coming to the forefront as a campaign issue, Obama is finally explaining openly why it is untrue -- something he should have been doing more aggressively before -- and the GOP is finally getting some serious pushback.

But they are deeply invested in this particular lie and put in a huge effort in endlessly repeating it for years now, and they will not give up on it easily.
