Yes, the Right Is Still Staging a Massive Fake Freak-Out About Joe Biden

Idiocy
Wingnuts • Views: 22,529

Amazing. The right wing media are still shrieking about Joe Biden’s “chains” comment, even though not a single one of these demagogues honestly believes there was a racial intent to it: Gibbs: Biden Remark No More Racial Than Boehner Saying ‘Unshackle Wall Street’.

Senior Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs on Sunday defended Joe Biden, saying a recent comment that GOP economic policies would put people “back in chains” was not racially motivated and claiming it was no different than how Republicans, including House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), speak of Wall Street reform.

Gibbs was asked by Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace if the remark, made by Biden at a campaign stop in Virginia before a racially-mixed audience last week, was “race baiting.”

“No more race baiting than when John Boehner says ‘let’s unshackle Wall Street, let’s unshackle big business,’” said Gibbs.

What the hell is wrong with the right? Do they really believe anyone with at least two brain cells is buying this idiotic talking point? They made up another controversy out of thin air and their own sense of racial grievance, and they’re all freaking out in unison. It’s pathetic.

Joe Biden hasn't made a verbal gaffe in three years. The chains comment was nothing. They're just grasping at straws. I listened to people on TV this morning talking about Obama needing to rein in Biden so he doesn't make gaffes. Fuck them. It's bullshit.

I've read that Biden's remarks were a 'poor choice of words' as some kind of concession. I don't see what was wrong at all.

It's all about controlling the media narrative. Invent a freakout and spend hours and days obsessing over it-- those are hours and days not spent on, say, debunking the Romney/Ryan lies about Medicare.

It was a very deliberate statement.

Saying it didn't have racial overtones...eh, I think it did. The phrasing, and who he said it to was no mistake. The question is whether you figure it was OK for him to say.

I've noticed a big difference between the left and the right. The left tends to obsess over something for less time while the right will drone on and on and on. Sort of how they're still warbling about Jimmy Carter or something Democrat "X" said on October 3, 1973. They're more inclined to OCD.

Not to mention, Biden's gaffes, when they do happen, are pretty benign. If not funny.

America. Outraged over Biden's comments. This is truly an outrage! Biden needs to be reined in now!!! But hey. Next time we need to come up with some fake war we can go ahead and bomb Baghdad to the ground and kill over 100,000 people over some fake "yellowcake" memo. Now that's OK. Bunch of sanctimonious double-talking assholes.

I disagree. I think that when you're speaking in Alabama, and you say that people will be 'put back in chains', you're making, if not a racial reference, an historical one.

Referencing 'unchain Wall Street' does not prevent that nuance from getting through.

It was an effective bit of language, which is probably another reason (beside the desire for drama) that it's being leapt on with such passion.

I think part of it is that many of these people have no personal understanding of racism; they see it only as an unfair accusation directed at 'their side', a political tactic, and are frustrated that it doesn't seem to work for them as a tactic, no matter how often they try.

Well said. I think you're right. It's yet another reason why they don't take accusations of racism seriously -- they think it's a pose struck purely for political advantage.

18 Gus  Sun, Aug 19, 2012 10:57:15am

Let's put it this way. Biden's comments is like a butterfly in a hurricane compared to what Wall Street has done over the years. This was even the part of the initial rallying cry of Teabaggers. These people are confused and lost much as most human have been with their cognitive dissonance over the past 2012 years. It's not about Biden. It's Wall Street and they're part of the reason this country continues to see people wages stagnating while a tiny minority continues to amass wealth. That the "Walmart" Walton family grubs 40 percent of American's net worth is the true outrage. Suckers.

Referencing 'unchain Wall Street' does not prevent that nuance from getting through.

He's speaking to 'all the people' and the subject was not race or racism but responses to his opponent's use of 'unshackle' with regards to banking industry and regulation.

Updated 1:23 p.m. - DANVILLE, VA -- Vice President Joe Biden said Tuesday that a Republican-led effort to loosen new regulations on Wall Street would put voters "back in chains."

"Romney wants to, he said in the first 100 days, he's gonna let the big banks again write their own rules," Biden said of the GOP nominee's proposals to roll back the Obama administration's financial reforms. "'Unchain Wall Street!'"

Lowering his voice, Biden added, "They're going to put you all back in chains."

I don't think he meant race or slavery imagery at all. This is a Tempest in a MicroTeaspoon.

Would it be a problem if he meant slavery imagery? And why?

It's as though people are defending him against the very idea. Why? What would be so terrible if that's exactly what he meant? Do people disagree?

Pretty much.

Though there might be SOME overtones (the language is rich enough to have that...), it's nowhere near the dog whistles the right regularly indulges in.

23 Gus  Sun, Aug 19, 2012 11:05:25am

Metaphor

A metaphor is a literary figure of speech that describes a subject by asserting that it is, on some point of comparison, the same as another otherwise unrelated object. Metaphor is a type of analogy and is closely related to other rhetorical figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison or resemblance including allegory, hyperbole, and simile.

24 Gus  Sun, Aug 19, 2012 11:06:25am

I don't think it would be a problem but we're getting into theoreticals. But assuming he absolutely meant to invoke slavery imagery I don't think it was charged rhetoric worthy of any outrage.

Slavery is an ethnic-neutral term. Certainly in the US, our history of slavery has been to the largest extent the slavery of African-Americans. Elsewhere, it has been Jews and others, often for poverty related reasons. Slavery still exists today throughout the world with human trafficking that I believe is primarily young women of all ethnicities. Financial slavery, which is what Biden was discussing, affects all of us. It is not a racist statement at all.
