The religious right is not going to like this one bit.

But what about their support of Personhood? Is it the blastodisc's fault how it was conceived? Isn't every life sacred? Are some more sacred than others?

3 Targetpractice  Sun, Aug 19, 2012 6:22:04pm

Which is gonna make the convention all the more fun, because you know the religious right is gonna insist on "personhood" or a similar ban on abortion as a plank in the party platform. Romney's performance in dancing around that platform while still embracing it will put DWTS to shame.

What do you bet the words "legitimate rape" - or very similar - will be coming up again within 24 hours or so?

Congratulations Mr. Romney you cleared the lowest bar imaginable, would you like to have a go at the row of three match boxes?

The Christian Juhad is brewing under the surface. About to explode.....

.....or Romney will turn like a flag in the wind and goes lock step with the religious right again.

i was gonna say!

every R&R statement must be followed up with another statement modifying the first such that either one can be quoted as appropriate but the ticket's position on any given matter cannot be clearly understood

Hm. Romney as Ferengi. Don't know why that didn't occur to me sooner.

Maybe it's just an index of my complete cynicism, but that statement means nothing until Romney/Ryan adds that they aren't interested in re-defining rape.

The keyword here is disagree. R^2 don't condemn Akin's remarks. They disagree with him. WTF?

R^2 want to be with God and the Devil at the same time.

The Wallace Shawn version or the Rom version?

“A Romney-Ryan Administration Would Not Oppose Abortion in Instances of Rape”

Half-True!

Ryan is among 64 House Republicans who co-sponsored the Sanctity of Human Life Act, an anti-abortion bill that declares that human life shall be deemed to begin at fertilization, and should be protected from that point.

The legislation, which has stalled, reflects the budding movement -- endorsed by Ryan -- to enact "personhood" rights for the unborn.

It would weaken the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision by "giving back the right to individual states to outlaw abortion," according to Gualberto Garcia Jones, legal analyst for Personhood USA.

I'd like to see Mitt utter these words rather than having a spokesman say it for him. In front of a camera...

"A Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape."
-- Mitt Romney

Like that.

See, that's the hook. A woman can only get an abortion if she proves she was raped. How does she do that? File a police report, hope the DA prosecutes, go to court and hope the guy is found guilty. How long will that take? Oh yeah, sorry honey. You're more than 20 weeks pregnant. Too late for an abortion.

re: #13 andres

R^2 want to be with God and the Devil at the same time.

Because, you know, most women who are raped were just asking for it.

What if the rape is by a family member? Does incest make it gross enough to allow an abortion?

What if the "woman" is 13?

So many questions.

Victim: "I was raped!"

R/R: "'Allegedly,' ma'am. Until it can be proven, we can't do anything. This is a legal matter, one which has to be done to our satisfaction before we will approve your abortion. In the mean time, have we mentioned there are several Christian-run adoption agencies in your area you could select from?"

31 Cap'n Magic  Sun, Aug 19, 2012 6:38:45pm

The real question will be, who was that in the Romney/Ryan campaign who made that comment and will they still have a job by the end of the day on Monday?

32 Mocking Jay  Sun, Aug 19, 2012 6:39:26pm

Huh. I just realized that I've been confusing Dana Loesch and Dana Bash for the last 45 minutes.

That's how I figure it's going to go down: don't put it on the books, but make it as complicated, expensive, and guilt-laden as possible to try to get an abortion after getting raped.

It isn't going to go down. It already has gone down in many states.

either ryan must turn the romney campaign into a wingnut crusade or the romney campaign must turn ryan into a ken doll

or else the ticket can spend the rest of the election lurching back and forth looking like dr jekyll and mr hyde

She's a Republican first and a woman second, apparently. Or she agrees with Akin and is just pissed he said it out loud, so she has to spin it for him.

Actually, I jokingly said Akin was 'objectively pro-rape' on Facebook couple of hours ago. somebody besides me has got to be saying it, albeit facetiously. We already know Erickson has zero sense of humor.

Many of those assholes won't vote for Romney anyways. They seek purity and any candidate with a real chance of winning will not meet with their approval.

46 CriticalDragon1177  Sun, Aug 19, 2012 6:57:04pm

Charles Johnson,

Off course he might do a one eighty later on and say he's against abortion in all instances. Off course assuming he does that during his first term, he'll risk loosing the next election. Most people, even most people who oppose abortion, don't go that far. Micheal Savage is also angry at Romney for not being right wing enough. But as Ed brayton points out, he can't really vote for anyone else and expect them to win.

Savage Doesn’t Like Ryan Pick
[Link: freethoughtblogs.com...]

If you think about it, the religious right, maybe a powerful minority, but luckily they are still a minority after all, not all of them have the most extreme view possible when it comes to things like opposing abortion. The extreme religious right doesn't even make up the entirety of the Republican party. If Romney goes too far to appease them, he may loose the votes of too many other Americans, for him to win, and I have a feeling he knows that, otherwise I don't think he'd have made it, even this far.

47 John Vreeland  Mon, Aug 20, 2012 6:34:12pm

Bizarre. It's almost like Romney doesn't even understand the anti-abortion movement.
