Dana and Chris Loesch Defend Akin’s ‘Legitimate Rape’ Comments

Loesch says Akin was ‘medically correct’
Wingnuts • Views: 34,017

Proving that there is nothing too dumb to defend for a member of the Breitbart Brigade, former tea partier, receiver of massive government subsidies, and conservative speaker Chris Loesch took to Twitter to claim that Todd Akin’s absurd comments about rape were “medically correct.”

In case you’ve been temporarily living under a rock, here’s what Akin said again:

‘First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,’ Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. ‘If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.’

Akin later claimed (implausibly) that he “misspoke.” But Chris Loesch didn’t think he misspoke. Chris Loesch thought Akin proved how “brilliant” he was.

A small sample of teh crazy from Loesch’s Twitter feed:

There’s plenty more where that came from.

I guess we should expect Liberty University to award Loesch with an honorary Ph.D. in Biology any day now.

What medical school gave Chris Loesch his M.D.?

Oh, that medical school on Teh Interwebz.

So you don't know that a woman's body can self terminate a pregnancy due to physical or emotional stress? It is defense.

It's difficult to be stunned by political discourse these days.

I'm stunned.

You don't need a medical degree to be an expert in telling women how their lady parts work. It's a built in part of wingnut patriachal knowledge base.

5 JRCMYP  Sun, Aug 19, 2012 6:46:14pm

Well, gee. If that's the case that women can just spontaneously abort an unwanted fetus because of stress, then abortion shouldn't be necessary at all!

It doesn't even need defending. Are you claiming there are no false claims of rape?

Chris, when you're defending someone who you agree with, it's best not to give away the game more than they have.

I asked one of the owners of the studio, Chris Loesch a few questions about the new venture via Facebook:

How long did construction take?

After the architects and engineers got rolling along enough to give us a firm grasp of the scope and funds needed, we began the process of getting the Federal and State Historic Tax Credits, TIF's (Tax Incremental Financing) from the City and Brownfield remediation credits in place...

I understand that. But this is a new aspect to the argument. One which goes to a woman's mens rea. That a woman who may not want a pregnancy can essentially will a pregnancy to terminate.

I see your point. And would certainly like to ask Mr. Loesch if a woman miscarrying after rape would, in his mind, be considered no different than her obtaining an abortion. After all, from a biological perspective, the same end result was reached.

The very idea of such arguments makes my head hurt. By that logic, being stressed out by a health crisis with one already-born child could be called a crime if a woman suffers a miscarriage. Insane and unproductive in the extreme.

And that really is what Loesch, Akin, and others who've supported the idea of "legitimate rape" or "forcible rape" or other weaselly words have been trying to push. That if a woman is raped and winds up pregnant, then since pro-life doctors have asserted that such pregnancies are exceedingly rare, every case of a pregnant woman alleging rape must be treated with skepticism. The victim is forced to prove their case, which the rapist will no doubt dispute.

Not to be super scary, but:

Add up personhood and this new talking point about "women's body can self terminate" and suddenly you're looking at a very scary pseudo-scientific reason to first control pregnant women, then savagely persecute women who've had a miscarriage.

If they actually keep up this magical-miscarriage line, that's the only way to line it up with their prior talking points.

Yeah, I always get a bit of private amusement at the personhood crowd. Do the anti-choice crowd thinks it ends when abortion is banned? That you're not going to spend funds on enforcing the law, as well as ensuring that confirmed pregnancies come to terms? If every life truly is precious, then the state has an obligation to ensure that it comes to fruition.

That's the intention. It's the whole idea behind personhood bills and behind the very real, very scary war that the GOP is waging on women these days.

It's all about controlling a woman's body from cradle to grave, including prosecuting her for miscarrying a baby. After all, if she'd been a good Christian girl instead of a dirty slut, she would have spontaneously aborted during or immediately after rape because of stress. And if she wasn't raped and her body miscarried anyway? Well, she's just an evil murderer who deserves prison time.

However, if stress causes a miscarriage, why do teens still carry to term? Being pregnant and 15 can't be light on the stress.

Also, the woman I knew who was pregnant as a result of rape was under unbelievable stress from a lot of places already, and it didn't affect things.

The House GOP's Plan to Redefine Rape

"...The bill hasn't been carefully constructed, Levenson notes. The term "forcible rape" is not defined in the federal criminal code, and the bill's authors don't offer their own definition. In some states, there is no legal definition of "forcible rape," making it unclear whether any abortions would be covered by the rape exemption in those jurisdictions.

The main abortion-rights groups despise the Smith bill as a whole, but they are particularly outraged by its rape provisions. Tait Sye, a spokesman for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, calls the proposed changes "unacceptable." Donna Crane, the policy director of NARAL Pro-Choice America, says that making the "already narrow exceptions for public funding of abortion care for rape and incest survivors even more restrictive" is "unbelievably cruel and heartless."

This new talking point is an astounding dismissal of the world beyond the artificial reality of wingnut-dom. Ahistorical, acontextual, amoral.

There's a terrible, intimate history of rape as a weapon of war (and democide) and bearing the children of rape that threads through times of conflict. Personal accounts, legal discusions, religous and ethical ponderings. That's all just hand-waved--millions of women through history secretly wanted to bear the child of an invader that raped her. Hundreds of thousands of women and young girls in destabilized areas of conflict right now...same thing.

It's all about the return to a patriarchal society --nothing else.

In these cave dwellers minds, rape isn't grounds for divorce.

Only violent rape that can cause an extreme orgasm that in turn can cause an ovary to pop an egg is considered "legitimate" rape. You know, like when conquering soldiers rape the women of the men they killed . . . ..

This is the kind of shit that leads people like Todd Akin to talk about "legitimate rape" and to say that a woman's body can somehow miraculously prevent pregnancy during rape because of the stress:

[Link: www.christianliferesources.com...]

That article is from 1999. It's been a long-standing view among the so-called "pro-life" types that the rape exception for abortion is a red herring because women supposedly almost never get pregnant when they're raped. To wit:

Finally, factor in what is certainly one of the most important reasons why a rape victim rarely gets pregnant, and that's physical trauma. Every woman is aware that stress and emotional factors can alter her menstrual cycle. To get and stay pregnant a woman's body must produce a very sophisticated mix of hormones. Hormone production is controlled by a part of the brain that is easily influenced by emotions. There's no greater emotional trauma that can be experienced by a woman than an assault rape. This can radically upset her possibility of ovulation, fertilization, implantation and even nurturing of a pregnancy. So what further percentage reduction in pregnancy will this cause? No one knows, but this factor certainly cuts this last figure by at least 50 percent and probably more. If we use the 50 percent figure, we have a final figure of 225 (or 370) women pregnant each year. These numbers closely match the 200 that have been documented in clinical studies.

So assault rape pregnancy is extremely rare. If we use the figure of 200, it is 4 per state per year. Even if we use a figure of 500, we're talking about only ten per state, per year.

This is what people like Todd Akin are relying on for their information. This is what passes for scholarship among the "pro-life" side. And it's why there's no un-sticking this from Akin or his campaign. He thinks he's correct. He thinks that "real" rapes almost never lead to pregnancy. It's repugnant, but that's why he thinks it -- because that's what the "pro-life" side believes.

Um, wouldn't giving women's bodies this kind of power go against the anti-choice position that God values all human life at conception? By that logic, if women have the power to self abort under duress why would God have a problem with a medical abortion in the event that the natural way to abort fails or is faulty in some way?

I can see that sort of understanding coming from someone who wasn't too bright to begin with, and only had one testicle, being told that the right one produced male sperm and the left one produced female sperm.

Yeah, it's a reach... would require Akinesque levels of obtuseness...

re: #106 Lidane

He bought into the bullshit being spread by "pro-life" doctors that pregnancy from rape is rare. That's how.

Overall, it probably is. First, you have to figure out how many women are being raped overall, and how many in a manner that actually can produce pregnancy. Then you figure how many are fertile, post menarche and pre menopause and not using a form of non-situational birth control. Then you look at the window of opportunity for fertilization in any given menstrual cycle, and then you add in that the body tends to terminate an astonishing number of pregnancies (not because it recognizes forcible rape, because it thinks it best) in their very early stages. Add to that the availability in many cases of emergency birth control, and most women who are raped will not find themselves pregnant.

However, in a large population, that's still a lot of women. For those who do find themselves pregnant under such circumstances, it is a horrible enough situation without these crazy, evil people telling them that somehow, biologically, it's not possible.

Chris Loesch @ChrisLoesch

. @Jennyjinx So you don't know that a woman's body can self terminate a pregnancy due to physical or emotional stress? It is defense.

Um, wouldn't giving women's bodies this kind of power go against the anti-choice position that God values all human life at conception? By that logic, if women have the power to self abort under duress why would God have a problem with a medical abortion in the event that the natural way to abort fails or is faulty in some way?

There's a sort of doublethink a lot of these folks seem to have about not only what's real rape, but what's real abortion. Note that they'll cry themselves to sleep at night fretting over the thought that morning-after pills are available at pharmacies, but Ron Paul got NO criticism that I saw for announcing that the old-fashioned equivalent was just fine, he'd administer it himself, so what's the problem?

You would think in a rational country, even the people who voted for this guy would be ashamed of both him and themselves for electing him.

Then again, this is America. As STLActivist's article demonstrates, America and rational thought have been on the outs for a while.

I really shudder to think what would happen to us if conservatives gain power in this country like they did from 2001 to 2006. Not having the Presidency or a clear advantage in Congress has made even the most rational conservative deranged beyond belief.

I have to admit I was wondering what the conservatives who post here would say about or, God forbid, try to defend Akin's statements.

I went through a lot of stress my last four months with HP. Finally threw my resume online and found a better job (and 15%+ salary increase) in about four weeks. Since leaving HP two weeks ago, I've lost five pounds (I'm drinking less) and I feel much better.

The important thing to remember about stress is to identify the cause, decide if it's worth allowing to control your life as much as it does, and then consciously decide to not let it affect you. It really is that easy...in hindsight.

After all, women who've gone through a "real" rape can't get pregnant or some shit. If she claims rape as her reason for getting an abortion, then she wasn't really raped.

There's a concept in some cultures of 'partible paternity', which is anthrospeak for the idea that if a woman has sex with several men before conceiving, her child will be the offspring off them all. It has some advantages.

This is apropos of nothing much, just thinking of all the stress caused in people's lives by the issue of 'who is the father?'

"The left is often 1st to shut down debate as "off limits" when it deems so. Aren't these moments supposed to open up a larger debate?"

There's nothing to debate.

What Akin said is ridiculous, scientifically. This is basic middle-school biology.

If we're going to resurrect Renaissance folklore about pregnancy, I like the one that a woman can have a baby of a completely different race than herself and her husband just through thinking the right thoughts, or seeing the right pictures. For example, if a white woman married to a white man sees a handsome black president talking on TV, and thinks about how much she admires him, and wants her child to be a great man like that, the baby could be black. Doesn't mean she was fooling around.

(The original example was seeing a black man riding in a military parade. As hilarious as the basic concept is, this was probably a smart thing to believe in southern Renaissance Italy, where the muddle of genes could probably lead to a real variety of apparent racial characteristics in children.)

In parts of the Amazon, it is very open. If a tribal chief or other prominent man visits, it is assumed that the lady of the house will sleep with him (this was common in the Celtic world as well). If she got pregnant shortly after, the child would be considered the child of this eminent gentleman, as well as of the lady's husband.

1988:
Freind's Rape-pregnancy Theory Refuted

HARRISBURG — The odds that a woman who is raped will get pregnant are "one in millions and millions and millions," said state Rep. Stephen Freind, R-Delaware County, the Legislature's leading abortion foe.

The reason, Freind said, is that the traumatic experience of rape causes a woman to "secrete a certain secretion" that tends to kill sperm.

Two Philadelphia doctors specializing in human reproduction characterized Freind's contention as scientifically baseless.

Unless by beasts drawn round their bait,

Rep. Todd Akin exposes the horrific immorality of moralism

This is an astonishing thing for a politician to say, in public, on the record. But it is not at all surprising that a fiercely anti-abortion politician would believe it.

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” said Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo.

This is simply what happens when moralism replaces morality.

The two things are incompatible. In order to choose moralism — which is what allegiance to the anti-abortion movement requires Akin to choose — he had to abandon morality.

And, as his comments about “legitimate rape” demonstrate, Todd Akin has abandoned morality.

Here’s how this works: Moralism seeks to blame all suffering on moral failure. If you are suffering, then you must have done something to deserve such suffering.

Victims, therefore, always must share in the blame. And since their suffering is deserved, nothing can or should be done to address it.

This is not a new idea. “Think now,” said Eliphaz the fool, “who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off? As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.” And just as foolishly, the disciples asked, “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

That’s how moralism works. It’s simple, tidy and, ultimately, monstrous.

And it requires ignorance. It creates, fosters and compels ignorance.

Akin’s moralism demands that he remain as ignorant as he can about how sex works and about what rape means. Akin cannot allow himself to learn anything about such things.

Battle of Ramree Island

Repeated calls by the British for the Japanese to surrender were ignored: the Marines holding the perimeter shot any Japanese attempting to escape, while within the swampland hundreds of soldiers died over the course of several days for lack of food or drinking water. Some, including naturalist Bruce Stanley Wright (who participated in the battle), claimed that the crocodiles attacked and ate numerous soldiers. Wright's description occurs in his 1962 book Wildlife Sketches Near and Far:

"That night [of the 19 February 1945] was the most horrible that any member of the M.L. [motor launch] crews ever experienced. The scattered rifle shots in the pitch black swamp punctured by the screams of wounded men crushed in the jaws of huge reptiles, and the blurred worrying sound of spinning crocodiles made a cacophony of hell that has rarely been duplicated on earth. At dawn the vultures arrived to clean up what the crocodiles had left. . . . Of about one thousand Japanese soldiers that entered the swamps of Ramree, only about twenty were found alive."[2][4]

When the British eventually moved in on the swamp, they found that of the nine hundred troops that originally fled into the swamp, only around twenty seriously wounded and weakened Japanese soldiers were captured. In all, about 500 Japanese soldiers escaped from Ramree despite the intense blockade instituted to stop them. If Wright's claim is true, however, the Ramree crocodile attacks would be the worst in recorded history.

5 Real Life Soldiers Who Make Rambo Look Like a Pussy

Simo Hayha

Simo Hayha had a fairly boring life in Finland. He served his one mandatory year in the military, and then became a farmer. But when the Soviet Union invaded his homeland in 1939, he decided he wanted to help his country.

Since the majority of fighting took place in the forest, he figured the best way to stop the invasion was to grab his trusty rifle, a couple of cans of food and hide in a tree all day shooting Russians. In six feet of snow. And 20-40 degrees below zero.

Of course when the Russians heard that dozens of their men were going down and that it was all one dude with a rifle, they got fucking scared. He became known as "The White Death" because of his white camouflage outfit, and they actually mounted whole missions just to kill that one guy.

They started by sending out a task force to find Hayha and take him out. He killed them all.

Then they tried getting together a team of counter-snipers (which are basically snipers that kill snipers) and sent them in to eliminate Hayha. He killed all of them, too.

ROver the course of 100 days, Hayha killed 542 people with his rifle. He took out another 150 or so with his SMG, sending his credited kill-count up to 705.

Since everyone they had was either too dead or too scared to go anywhere near him, the Russians just carpet-bombed everywhere they thought he might be. Supposedly, they had the location right, and he actually got hit by a cloud of shrapnel that tore his coat up, but didn't actually hurt him, because he's the fucking White Death, damn it.

Finally on March 6th, 1940, some lucky bastard shot Hayha in the head with an exploding bullet. When some other soldiers found him and brought him back to base, he "had half his head missing." The White Death had finally been stopped...

..for about a week. In spite of having come down with a nasty case of shot-in-the-face syndrome, he was still very much alive, and regained consciousness on March 13, the very day the war ended.

The 6 Most Amazing Military Raids of All-Time

The Dambusters Raid

Germans love their dams, more so when those same dams provide the bulk of the electricity for their key industrial region, the Ruhr. During World War II, the Germans weren't so absent-minded as to leave these incredibly important installations undefended -- they surrounded their dams with massed anti-aircraft guns, balloons (which were far more deadly than they sound) and heavy-duty torpedo nets. The Germans had expertly planned and prepared for every form of conventional attack.

Therefore, attacking would require something unconventional.

Here's where physics arrives late to the party, naked and handcuffed to a police officer. The legendary British inventor Barnes Wallis developed a bomb that, if spun backward at 500 rpm, would skim across the surface of the water, hop over the torpedo nets and slam into the wall. It would then screw its way down below the surface of the water (because it was still spinning) and detonate at the base of the wall, blowing a huge hole in the dam.

After some testing, which involved the destruction of a dam in Wales that nobody was using, a crack team of 19 bomber crews assembled in specially modified aircraft to carry out the raid.

It was a pretty good idea to use only the most experienced and evidently insane bomber crews available to the British at the time. They flew the entire way just feet above the waves. How low were they? One plane was lost when it crashed into power cables, and another was forced to turn back before it even reached continental Europe when it was hit by a freaking wave that dislodged its bomb.

When they got to the first dam, the Mohne, they flew even lower, with one bomber actually approaching the target by flying along a firebreak in a nearby forest.

As they approached their targets, the raiders turned on several powerful searchlights located on the belly of each aircraft. Because this was the only way to accurately gauge their height, it also had the effect of lighting their aircraft up like Times Square.

They dropped their bombs, blowing up two of the three target dams. The raiders turned for home, still flying at treetop level to avoid anti-aircraft fire. Of the 19 bombers, only 11 made it back. The raid's leader, Guy Gibson, was awarded a Victoria Cross because while everyone else was bombing targets he was circling above, flipping the bird to the German AA gunners and attracting all their fire.

And this the place to do it:

Hell! What is hell to one like me

By friends consigned to misery,
By hope deserted too?...

XV

'Tis five years since, `An end,' said I;
`I'll march no further, time to die.
All's lost; no worse has heaven to give.'
Worse has it given, and yet I live.

I shall not die to-day, no fear:
I shall live yet for many a year,
And see worse ills and worse again,
And die of age and not of pain.

When God would rear from earth aloof
The blue height of the hollow roof,
He sought him pillars sure and strong,
And ere he found them sought them long.

The stark steel splintered from the thrust,
The basalt mountain sprang to dust,
The blazing pier of diamond flawed
In shards of rainbow all abroad.

What found he, that the heavens stand fast?
What pillar proven firm at last
Bears up so light that world-seen span?
The heart of man, the heart of man.

I have heard the phrase "its God's will" or "there is a reason for what happened" or "God needed her" many many times after I lost my wife to cancer. It infuriates me as does my son. I know they mean well. But they have know idea what they are talking about. If the religious Right wants to deny abortions to rape or incest victims because they say it is God's will that created that pregnancy, and they do, then again I say, they have no clue what they are talking about. So many on the Right are so concerned about Sharia Law creeping into USA while they want to make into law all their religious beliefs. Many in the RR have justified ignoring environmental issues because they believe the Rapture is nigh. They hold that all thing happen according to God's plan. Those that think that, in my opinion, should not be allowed to make any decisions for our Country.

I have come to the conclusion that shit happens all the time for no reason. It is not God's will to inflict pain and suffering upon us. WE do that to ourselves.

Life just is.

They celebrated the Dali Llama's 77th birthday the other day.

It reminded me of the idiocy of "Free Tibet" demonstrations on campus when I was a kid. That was my first real encounter with how shallowly most people engage with topics, even topics they're very, very passionate about.

Tibet was a semi-theocracy, semi-monarchy prior to the 1950s. Serfdom and slavery were common, with children being given to monastaries as babies, where they would work their entire lives for the benefit of the monks. Women had few property rights and little chance at an education. Aristocrats lived in sprawling estates with serfs working the land, courts always handed down verdicts on the side of the monks and the lords against the peasantry. It was a feudal state. They fought numerous border wars over disputed territory.

And yet so many of the "Free Tibet" protesters know nothing, nothing at all, about Tibetan society and culture before the Chinese invasion. Nothing about this excuses the invasion by the Chinese, of course, but Tibet was never free, and the Dali Llama himself represents theocratic, oppressive rule. Furthermore, China is not free, so I don't understand why "Free Tibet" is the slogan to chant instead of "Free China".

From your link, The arresting officer reportedly told Weekley's family that he was skateboarding on the wrong side of the street and he resisted arrest.

Anyone know what the relevent law is? Should he have been on the sidewalk? On the pavement facing oncoming traffic (as pedestrians are often advised to do)? Or flowing with vehicular traffic --where he can't see them without a rearview mirror. Must one avoid bike lanes? And whatever the rules, wouldn't a skateboarder have to reverse direction fairly often, assuming he/she want's to stay in one area, such as for saftey? Can't you just see a teenager spending a few seconds skateboarding, then a minute or so walking back, alternately, in order to avoid jaywalking? Is that what it would take to be compliant?

Democrats Link Akin To Romney-Ryan: ‘The Real Issue’ Is The GOP

Democrats are seizing on the firestorm started by Rep. Todd Akin, tying the Congressman’s controversial remarks about rape to Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan by calling his outburst indicative of the Republican Party and its nominees’ stance on women’s health issues.

Akin, the Republican Senate nominee in Missouri, said that victims of “legitimate rape” rarely become pregnant because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

In an email, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz linked Akin’s comments to a larger trend of “backward statements from Republicans on issues affecting women’s health” and pointed to the anti-abortion bills that Akin and Paul Ryan have worked on together...

‘God’s Little Shield’: A Short History Of The False No-Pregnancy-From-Rape Theory

Rep. Todd Akin is far from the only conservative to suggest women rarely get pregnant from rape. He’s not even the first lawmaker to make the assertion (which flies in the face of medical evidence).

A search of news archives by TPM shows a short history of Republican politicians espousing the idea of a biological defense against pregnancy in cases of rape, though there’s little consistency in their explanations of how such a mechanism works.

In 1988, Stephen Freind, a state representative in Delaware, defended his no-exceptions anti-abortion stance — as Akin was doing Sunday — by claiming that it was virtually impossible for a woman who is raped to become pregnant.

“The odds are one in millions and millions and millions,” Freind said in a debate in March of that year. “And there is a physical reason for that.”...

Eye roll!

492 allegro  Mon, Aug 20, 2012 7:48:54am

I just realized that we' re seeing - and contributing to - the Overton Window here. The discussion is not about preserving women's right to choose by having abortion, morning after pill, etc. legal, available, and affordable regardless of the circumstances of the conception. Now we're focusing on "allowing" women who have been raped to legally be able to abort should they become pregnant. It's like it's OK now for this to be open for legitimate discussion.

It's now Romney is showing moderate colors by saying that he disagrees with Akin and would allow abortion for rape victims. No. Not acceptable. No woman should have to prove or explain anything. It's her decision. Period.

In order to not humiliate and put further stress on rape victims, abortion should be available to everyone. No one should have to prove she was "legitimately" raped.

If anyone ever doubted that the various talk radio personalities and blogs like Breitland and PJs were anything less than the propaganda arm of the Republican party, this incident provides all the proof needed. It is the year 2012 and these people are defending a man who claims that a woman's body has a magical anti-rape-pregnancy system.

Even Boortz, who has traditionally taken issue with the Republicans' insistence on the abortion issue, couldn't bring himself to denounce the man for the completely bonkers content of his statements. All he could say was that it was stupid to be bringing up abortion on the basis of who will or will not vote for you based on it.

Conception by rape shouldn't be an issue at all WRT the legal abortion discussion. Every woman who is pregnant when she doesn't want to be is seriously stressed. (No, I am not discounting at all the trauma of rape.) It doesn't matter how she got that way. It's her decision whether she wishes to continue the pregnancy or terminate it and no one else's business why or how she comes to that decision.

In a phone interview this morning, Mitt Romney told National Review Online that Representative Todd Akin’s recent comment on rape is “inexcusable.”

“Congressman’s Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong,” Romney said. “Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.”

I was thinking the same thing, and also wondering if some GOPers would blatantly try to use Akin for this purpose ("how dare you say we're anti-woman when all we're doing is [insert backhanded way of reducing abortion access here]")

I think some Democrats are wise to this as well, and using Akin to make a larger point about the GOP's abysmal record on women's health:

Well this was certainly expected...

Israel a ‘cancerous tumor’ and Middle East’s biggest problem, Iranian supreme leader says

Muslim world, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said on Sunday, immediately after the international community condemned President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for making similar comments.

“The great powers have dominated the destiny of the Islamic countries for years and… installed the Zionist cancerous tumour in the heart of the Islamic world,” semi-official Iranian IRNA news agency quoted Khamenei saying in an Eid al-Fitr speech marking the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan.

“Many of the problems facing the Muslim world are due to the existence of the Zionist regime,” he charged.

Khamenei’s comments on Sunday came two days after Ahmadinejad marked al-Quds day on Friday by calling for the elimination of the “insult to all humanity” that is Israel, and said that its very existence is a crime against humanity.

Iran's specter looms large over London's annual 'Quds Day' march

The Palestinians were conspicuously missing from the annual pro-Palestinian march in the British capital. Hezbollah and Iran, however, were everywhere.

Five hundred people (my count, the organizers claimed five thousand) gathered in central London this Friday afternoon for the annual Al-Quds day demonstration, calling literally for the destruction of Israel. But despite the Palestinian flags and the placards bearing graphic pictures of dead Palestinian children, it was no ordinary pro-Palestinian march, of which there are many in London.

The only thing I hate is the fact that people were under the impression that women couldn't play there when they could (I honestly don't care if Augusta allows women members or not. He said the women would play faster rounds than the guys because guys would spend 20 minutes looking for a ball that cost a couple bucks. The women didn't try to kill the ball, leading to a slice in the woods. The ladies would hit 120 yards, middle of the fairway, par golf.

"I am more reasonable than Todd Akin's hateful magical gibberish" is not an impressive position.

Walk back the absolute crazy of his inability to differentiate between a woman and a duck--which is sadly not a novel concept of his own crafting--and his position is still crazy and victim-blaming, and personhood is still a shitty concept fraught with legal complications, what with how it consigns pregnant women to be policed as though they were OSHA compliant buildings.

The veep is down with personhood, and worked with Akin to redefine rape. I take zero solace in a rejection that doesn't actually call out ALL of the crazy shit.

I love the way Chris Loesch put people down with his superior medical knowledge but misunderstands the science himself.

"So you don't know that a woman's body can self terminate a pregnancy due to physical or emotional stress? It is defense."

Aside from the fact Akin was talking about the body preventing pregnancy, not aborting a pregnancy, you seem to not understand the purpose behind the rejection.

Yah Chris, there have been cases where spontaneous abortions have occurred due to increased stress. Those abortions are the body's way of preserving the mother's health so she can conceive, carry and give birth to a healthy baby in the future.

In other words, we, along with other species giving birth to a low number of offspring at a time, have evolved a biological system that preserves the mother over the baby for a significant portion of the pregnancy. That preservation can be triggered by something as insignificant as too little to eat. Is that really an argument you want to put into pro-life propaganda?

Niall Ferguson Disappoints, on Jews and Money

Last night Yivo Institute on W. 16th Street hosted a talk by the Harvard historian Niall Ferguson on “Jews and Money.” How excited I was to hand over my $15. The center dedicated to the study of Yiddish-speaking Jews was bringing in a heavyweight prof, a biographer of Rothschilds and Warburgs, to anatomize the culture of Jewish success.

What a fizzle. Niall Ferguson was overawed by the SRO New York audience and his Lazard Freres intoducer, an affable machine in a too-long red tie, and did not venture one bold thought on the matter. Most of his talk seemed aimed at gaining the audience’s approval by showing that he regarded the alleged affinity of Jews and money as anti-Semitic stereotype from Europe in the 1800s. Jews were no different from other ethnic minorities: Armenians in Turkey, Parsis in India, even Asians at Harvard today. O.K., but what are the facts? How wealthy are Jews? How much are “Wong and Chang,” as Ferguson blithely caricatured his top students at Harvard, worth? I read the ad: This was not a talk about history or aspiration but money. Ferguson offered zero data, that’s 0 data, on wealth in the U.S. today and confined himself to Germany during Weimar, where he stated Jewish overrepresentation in German elites was on a factor of 33 (to 1, was implicit; his statistics were sadly vague).

The talk took a safe slide at the end into the matter of intermarriage—again, not what Yivo said he was talking about when it asked for my $15, and again in historical terms. Ferguson said that in the 1920s, Hamburg (50 percent) and Berlin (43) had the greatest rates of Jewish intermarriage in Central Europe. Why? Was it the girl wanting to marry in, or the boy marrying out? The novelist/sociologist did not show up for this talk. Though Ferguson said, intriguingly, that high intermarriage rates were a motivator for Nazi ideology, Hitler wanting to purify Aryan blood from “self-assimilators.”

Intermarriage allowed him to conclude on a homiletic note that was calculated to please the (Jewish) crowd: “Jews don’t necessarily gain much from ceasing to be Jews.”

We are delighted to welcome Niall Ferguson, one of those rare historians who is equally brilliant investigating the past, and analyzing the present. The author of the superb Ascent of Money and The House of Rothschild probes with his customary clarity and acuity the relationships between Jews and finance, and anti-Semitism and financial crises, topics especially pertinent now.

Didn't they call him "really mean" one week and a wimp the next? Or was that Robert Gibbs?

WTF??

Did he then turn around and complain that Orthodox Jews are "too clannish" and "don't marry outsiders because they don't want to pollute their bloodlines"

The man is an ass of astounding proportions. He's written one book that's an elaborate confection about how Germany wasn't responsible for WW1, and another that's a mass of excuses for the British Empire. He's also an enthusiast for the "Eurabia" concept, a flax tax (33% sales) supporter, and down with the neocon foreign policy.

Apparently his entire status as a serious scholar is based on his well-received works on the Rothschilds...since then, it's been hype, unjustified assumptions, and counterfactual historical speculation.

So contrary to what Ferguson leads readers to believe, the CBO report does not state that the reduction is "unclear." What is "unclear" is whether the reduction will come through greater efficiencies in healthcare delivery or reduced access to care.

So, one more time: The Oxford-trained, Harvard-employed, Newsweek contibutor Niall Ferguson just edited the CBO report to change its meaning.

Congressman Todd Akin and the Committee for Ironic Lady Science

Like much of the far-right's social ideology, Akin's beliefs were shaped in a bubble of rhetoric in which white men are the only perspective being considered. When he emerged from that bubble to air his precious views in public, demeaning the legitimacy of rape victims and fantasizing about human biology in order to force additional misery on women, he was met with gasps.

It should come as no surprise that a man who takes social cues from Leviticus and gets his knowledge of human anatomy from a Tea Party website serves on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

The republicans are nothing if not fans of ironic committee postings. Reverse Captain Planet James Inhofe is still the ranking republican on the Senate committee responsible for environmental policy and Michele Bachmann clicks her pen and doodles crosses a lot while sitting on the House intelligence committee.

Pro-Gay Donors & Activists Have 'Poisoned' the GOP and Must Be 'Rooted Out'

On Friday's episode of "The Janet Mefferd Show," Matt Barber was interviewed to give his thoughts on "the GOP and their buckling stance on homosexuality." Barber was, not surprisingly, highly critical of any effort by the Republican Party to try to appear less openly-hostile to gays and blasted the party for even letting groups like GOProud and the Log Cabin Republicans or pro-gay donors have a seat at the table.

Such groups were, Barber asserted, really just gay activists in disguise who are intent destroying the Republican Party from within. As such, they and like-minded donors have "poisoned" the GOP and need to be "rooted out" because the "most important election in history" is approaching and the party cannot risk alienating its Chick-fil-A-loving, anti-gay base at a time like this:

Yes, its obviously those dastardly homosexuals who are destroying the GOP and not the bible thumping science deniers who keep rewriting history every chance they get.

Former union boss at Occupy event: Our goal is to ‘overthrow the capitalist system and build communism’ [VIDEO]

Former Amalgamated Transit Union local 689 president Mike Golash, now an “Occupy” movement organizer, was caught on tape Sunday revealing his political goals: overthrowing capitalism in the United States and instituting a communist government.

“Progressive labor is a revolutionary communist organization,” Golash said during an Occupy DC “People’s Assembly” on August 19.

“Its objective,” he added, “is to make revolution in the United States, overthrow the capitalist system and build communism.”

Golash said he and his comrades are “trying to learn something from the historical revolutions of the past: the Russian revolution, the Chinese revolution, the revolutions in Cuba and Eastern Europe.”

“What can we learn from them so we can build a more successful movement to transform capitalist society?”

Virginia Republicans Call for Armed Revolution if Obama Wins in November

Excerpt:

If one is confused as to what Republicans consider is a “political socialist ideologue,” the newsletter claims President Obama “shuns biblical praise, handicaps economic ability, disrespects the honor of earned military might,” and that under Obama, “the government is out of control, and this opportunity, must not be forsaken for we shall not have any coarse (sic) but armed revolution.”

I'll go on record right now: I'm strongly in favor of every US President shunning biblical praise. Virginia is for idiots.

Some of the revolutions he said they're trying to learn from, the older ones, were violent. He doesn't really disavow the violent bits, but there's no reason to suspect he's advocating violent revolution.

620 Obdicut  Mon, Aug 20, 2012 10:30:30am

re: #616 makeitstop

I'm not really worried about a violent communist revolution occurring in the US. The GOP have been absolute shitheads and done their best to give capitalism (and democracy) a bad name, but I don't think we're at the level of wealth disparity yet to spark revolution.

What the GOP and their supports don't seem to realize is that there is a point where that would cease to be true, where people really will revolt when they realize they have no chance in their lives of really getting ahead and the moneyed classes have completely gamed the system.
