CNN’s Dana Loesch Rages at GOP for Not Supporting Todd Akin

“Why is it that conservatives are so eager to placate Democrats and their media?”
Wingnuts • Views: 26,327

Dana Loesch was one of the first to get out there and defend Rep. Todd Akin (R-12th Century), and today on her radio show she ranted at the Republican Party for not following her lead and supporting the beleaguered caveman from Missouri.

At some point in the not too distant future, probably not until after the elections though, we're going to have to write "former CNN contributor Dana Loesch"...but first, they need to compete with Fox for lunatic news organization of the year.

Bryan Fischer: Todd Akin is 'Absolutely Right'

Fischer today said that the trauma of a “real, genuine rape, a case of forcible rape,” would “make it impossible for her or difficult in that particular circumstance to conceive a child.” Of course, rape does not make pregnancy either impossible or unlikely, and there are other types of rape than “forcible rape,” such as statutory rape or cases where consent isn’t offered or is impossible.

FRC: Attacks on Todd Akin 'Gotcha Politics'

"This is another case of 'gotcha politics' against a conservative leader. Todd Akin has a long and distinguished record of defending women, children and families. He has fought against forcing taxpayers to subsidize abortion giant Planned Parenthood, which is the bedrock of Claire McCaskill's base of support. When speaking about the issue of rape, let's not forget the cover-up of statutory rape by Planned Parenthood, which to my knowledge has not been addressed by Senator McCaskill.

"Throughout his twelve years in Congress, Todd Akin has supported legislation that honors all human life. He has opposed the commodification of women in contrast to his opponent, Claire McCaskill, who has a long record of promoting the abortion industry while ignoring how abortion harms women. We know Todd Akin, and FRC Action PAC enthusiastically endorses his candidacy," Mackey concluded.

re: #5 S'latch

Yes, you're correct, it makes no sense for anyone, Republican or Democrat, to support Todd Akin.

So why does this hyper-partisanship continue? I believe that a major reason is the demonization of President Obama. The point is that when you think your political opponent really is an evil person who hates America and wants to harm your loved ones, etc. etc., you'll support Todd Akin, crazy as Akin is, simply because of how evil the enemy is.

This reminds me of the lengths people went to support our side in the Cold War, because the Soviet Union was so evil. Now I happen to agree with President Reagan that the USSR was, indeed, as he put it, the focus of evil in the modern world. So I'm not trying to make an analogy to the current demonization of President Obama, who is a thoroughly decent person. But the point is that the USSR was ***so*** bad, that a reasonable person might do just about anything to fight the USSR. Even go along with a nutcase like Todd Akin.

This is why Fox News, and other right-wing outlets, will go into overdrive as the election approaches, to demonize the President at every opportunity. Without this portrayal of Obama as Evil Incarnate, many on the right-wing, such as Todd Akin, will look just plain silly.

What's amazing about the whole Akin debate is most Republicans, at best, will shrug their shoulders and go, "Well, Akin doesn't represent me." At best.

You would think that when your party has this kind of unrepentant embrace of religious-fueled ignorance at its core, more conservatives and Republicans would stand up for what's right. Right in this case is denouncing this man and calling for your fellow Republicans to really rethink where this line of thinking is taking them.

I know I've been riding this theme hard all afternoon. I just don't understand how you can consider yourself a conservative/Republican as well as a human being, and not be sickened by Akin and the people defending him.

I mean, look at some of the conservatives who post here. To the best of my knowledge, we've got one "don't vote for him until he recants." That's it.

National Republican Infrastructure Abandons Todd Akin

Todd Akin stands alone. Minutes after Akin vowed to remain the Republican nominee in the Missouri Senate race, the full infrastructure of his party abandoned him.

John Cornyn (R-TX), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, called on Akin to “reconsider” staying in the race and then reportedly warned him that if he does stay in, he won’t have any financial help from the committee.

Around the same time, the super PAC founded by Karl Rove said it had abandoned the Senate race as well, leaving Akin without valuable air cover in his bid to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill (D).

Paul Ryan, VP nominee, sponsored a personhood bill which would define life as beginning at conception, and therefore make abortion for rape or incest illegal.

All Akin did was say something that sounds really obviously stupid and blatant. In terms of actual policy, Akin is perfectly mainstream in the GOP party.

They're not rejecting his policies, just his stupid mouth. They want someone who knows how to hide these things to run instead.

Country music singer and incendiary conservative Hank Williams, Jr. is once again saying controversial things about President Obama. Des Moines Register reporter Joe Lawler writes Williams told a crowd at the Iowa State Fair Friday that the president isn't a Christian and that he "hates" America.

"We’ve got a Muslim president who hates farming, hates the military, hates the US and we hate him!” Williams yelled to the crowd.

The line was met with "loud and enthusiastic" cheers, Lawler writes.

Rehberg Gives Akin Donation To Teen Pregnancy Center

Rep. Denny Rehberg, the Republican candidate for Senate in Montana, will donate $5,000 that he received from Todd Akin's PAC to a teen pregnancy center, Politico reports.

Rehberg got a $5,000 contribution earlier this cycle from Akin's Takin Back America PAC. That sum will now go to the Florence Crittenton Center in Helena, according to Rehberg's campaign.

The center "provides a wide variety of resources for pregnant and parenting teens and their children, as well as young families," the organization's 's website says.

Rehberg had already condemned Akin's statement Sunday night:

“As a pro-life conservative, a husband, and a father of two young women, I find Representative Akin’s remarks to be offensive and reprehensible. There is no such thing as a ‘legitimate rape.’ I condemn Representative Akin’s statements in the strongest possible terms.”

Penn. To DOJ: Forget Voter ID, What About The New Black Panther Party?

While the state said it would provide a number of documents related to the voter ID law if the Justice Department signs a confidentiality agreement, General Counsel James Schultz said in a letter to the Justice Department that it would not provide information backing the state’s (unsupported) claim that 99 percent of residents had a valid form of photo identification.

“In light of the absence of authority for your request for information, I question whether your inquiry is truly motivated by a desire to assess compliance with federal voting rights laws, or rather is fueled by political motivation,” Schultz, who works for Gov. Tom Corbett (R), wrote in the letter.

Schultz took a shot at the Obama administration in the first paragraph of his letter, writing that he was “optimistic” when he saw the DOJ letter that it “marked the long overdue renewal of the Department of Justice’s previously abandoned review of the 2008 voter intimidation case in Philadelphia, a review that would be particularly well-timed in this presidential election year, as I trust Attorney General Holder and the Department of Justice share the Commonwealth’s commitment to ensuring that no violation of the voting rights of Pennsylvanians be tolerated.”

Valedictorian denied diploma for curse worse in speech

An Oklahoma high school valedictorian who used the word "hell" in her graduation speech in May has yet to receive her diploma.
Kaitlin Nootbaar graduated from Prague High School with a 4.0 grade point average, her father, David Nootbaar, told KFOR-TV. But school administrators told him that Kaitlin would have to submit a written apology in order to get her diploma.

"We went to the office and asked for the diploma and the principal said, 'Your diploma is right here but you're not getting it. Close the door, we have a problem,'" David Nootbaar told the network.
"She worked so hard to stay at the top of her class," he said. "This is not right."

In her speech—inspired by a similar address in "Eclipse: The Twilight Saga"—Kaitlin recounted how annoying it is to be constantly asked what she wants to do as graduation approached. "How the hell do I know?" she said, according to her father. "I've changed my mind so many times."

In the version she submitted to the school for approval, "hell" was "heck." But in the version she delivered at graduation, "hell" it was.
The school declined to comment. "This matter is confidential and we cannot publicly say anything about it," Prague schools Superintendent Rick Martin said in a statement to KFOR.

Coyote-Wolf Hybrids Have Spread Across U.S. East

The coyote is "one of the animals that will be left at the end, like the cockroaches, raccoons, and rabbits," Bozarth said.

For the new study, Bozarth and colleagues collected coyote scat samples in northern Virginia and extracted DNA. The team then compared the coyote DNA with that of representatives of every canid species found in eastern North America. (Get a genetics overview.)

The study, published October 17 in the Journal of Mammalogy, found evidence that Virginia coyotes mated with Great Lakes wolves but not with the rare red wolf, which is hanging on in just a few isolated spots in the U.S. South.

That's "good news for the red wolf," whose survival is already threatened by inbreeding, which reduces the species' genetic diversity, Bozarth noted.

For now, it's impossible to say how "wolfy" the newly identified coyote-wolf hybrids really are, Bozarth added—just that "at some point down the line, a coyote mated with a Great Lakes wolf-even generations ago."

Scientists have not yet studied the behaviors of the Virginian hybrids to see if they're killing bigger wildlife or otherwise changing the ecosystem, Bozarth added.

But other East Coast hybrids seen alive or identified by their remains are noticeably larger, with more wolf-like skulls, jaws, and teeth, Bozarth noted.

Given this, coyote-wolf hybrids "should be able to do things like take down deer, which a little, scrappy Great Plains wily coyote would not be able to do on its own," Bozarth said.

Republican Platform Committee Embraces Tea Party Priorities

The Republican National Convention platform committee has reportedly embraced ten of twelve “Freedom Platform” proposals chosen by Tea Party activists and promoted by FreedomWorks, a leading D.C.-based conservative grassroots service center. The platform committee is currently meeting in Tampa to determine the 2012 Republican platform in advance of the August 27-30 Republican National Convention.

“We were shocked when the first draft came out and they’d included ten of our twelve policies,” Ohio Liberty Coalition president Tom Zawistowski told Media Trackers. Zawistowski and Gena Bell of the Hills Community Tea Party are two of twelve Freedom Platform commissioners petitioning for the inclusion of Tea Party priorities in the official Republican platform.

The Freedom Platform includes the following twelve items. Items not included in the current GOP platform draft are listed in italics:

Repeal Obamacare; Pursue Patient-Centered Care
Stop the Tax Hikes
Reverse Obama’s Spending Increases

Scrap the Code; Replace It with a Flat Tax
Pass a Balanced Budget Amendment
Reject Cap and Trade
Rein in the EPA
Unleash America’s Vast Energy Potential

Eliminate the Department of Education
Reduce the Bloated Federal Workforce
Curtail Excessive Federal Regulation

Grolar bears and narlugas...

From the article:
In 2006 an American hunter shot an animal in the far north of Canada’s Northwest Territories that shared characteristics of a polar bear and a grizzly. Earlier this year, a similar bear was killed less than 200 miles away, and DNA tests confirmed it was a mixture of the two species. The "grolar bear" thus joined a growing list of cross-species couplings -- beluga whales and narwhals, right whales and bowhead whales, various seal mixtures -- all confirmed to varying degrees by scientists in the Arctic over the past two decades.

John will talk your ear off about it, but he's very conservative in his theorizing. Simple hybrid vigor is also an explanation; most parasites and diseases will be endured more easily by a hybrid, because the parasites and diseases evolved to affect the root species, not the hybrids. Of course, once hybrids become common enough that will cease to be true.

It may be that hybrids are also better at doing both pack and solo stuff, and so can survive different circumstances better.

There's lots of other stuff too. I'll ask him if there's any good papers or anything for you when I get a chance.

Christian Historian John Fea takes down David Barton

Throckmorton is not a historian. He is a fact-checker--and a pretty darn good one. Barton is not a historian--he is a political activist with a good grasp of historical facts that he uses for the sole purpose of promoting his political agenda. Throckmorton's status as a psychologist (or anything else for that matter) should have little to do with whether or not he is able to fact-check Barton's book.

Historians, as any reader of this blog will know, interpret the facts. They take the facts of the past and weave them into a compelling narrative. They situate those facts in context. They understand the complexity of human events (something that is difficult to do when you are driven by a political agenda and are just looking at one side of a particular issue). They show how events build off of each other. They chronicle change over time.

Fact-checkers are not historians and one does not have to be a historian to check facts.

The Theological Roots of Akin’s “Legitimate Rape” Comment

Akin’s comments reveal a religious culture fundamentally opposed to women’s equality. On the rape exception question in particular, he’s not forging new ground, but rather echoing tropes long in circulation. As Garance Franke-Ruta details at The Atlantic, deploying the bogus claim that a woman cannot get pregnant as a result of rape has long been a tactic of anti-choice activists to remove rape exceptions to laws outlawing abortion. And as Mother Jones’ Nick Baumann reports, last year Akin “and most of the House GOP co-sponsored a bill that would have narrowed the already-narrow exceptions to the laws banning federal funding for abortion—from all cases of rape to cases of ‘forcible rape.’”

A 2001 PCA report on the prospect of women serving in combat positions in the military, titled “Man’s Duty to Protect Woman,” states, “woman is the weaker sex and part of her weakness is the vulnerability attendant to her greatest privilege—that God has made her the ‘Mother of all the living.’ Men are to guard and protect her as she carries in her womb, gives birth to, and nurses her children.”

Yes, that was written in 2001, not 1001.

In its lengthy position papers on abortion, the PCA has made clear that what it claims are biblical prohibitions on abortion should take precedence over any other law, because of its views on the separation of church and state:

The civil magistrate [a government official] is responsible to God. He is to discharge his duty according to God’s will. The Bible is the supreme revelation of God’s will. Because church and state are neither subordinate to the other but to God, the civil magistrate is under obligation to recognize the Bible as authoritative in the exercise of civil magistracy. The Lordship of Christ in all areas of life is fundamental.

I just don't get how people can compartmentalize this stuff.

I'm a conservative. I think Akin should step down. Failing that I think the GOP should stop every dollar of funding until he does, a movement which has already started. Tea Party Express: Akin ‘Should Step Down’

The Tea Party Express, the nation's largest tea party super PAC, is urging Todd Akin to drop out of the Missouri Senate race, citing the 2010 losses of tea party candidates like Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell to make their case in a press release Monday.

“One of the lessons we learned in 2010 is that we need candidates who are not only conservative, but are capable of putting together a strong campaign against liberal opponents," Amy Kremer, the group's chairwoman, said in a statement. Kremer followed Connie Mack's lead in comparing Akin's comments to ones made by Vice President Joe Biden last week: "Akin’s frequent ‘Bidenisms’ are distracting from the important issues at hand."

Suspects in Louisiana deputy shootings tied to ‘sovereign citizen’ movement

Police say at least two of the seven suspects arrested for the fatal shooting of two Louisiana sheriffs deputies last Thursday are connected to the anti-government “sovereign citizen” movement.

According to WBRZ-TV, 28-year-old Kyle Joekel and 44-year-old Terry Smith had identified themselves as part of the movement, which was classified as a domestic terror group last year by the FBI.

Joekel and Smith, along with several members of Smith’s family and other associates, were arrested following an ambush on authorities in LaPlace, Louisiana, about 25 miles west of New Orleans. Deputies Brandon Nielsen and Jeremy Triche were killed in the ensuing shootout. Two more deputies were wounded.

Are there people out there who lay awake at night unable to sleep because of their seething hatred of Farming?

The GOP has a near-monopoly on seething hatred. I think it's an absolute monopoly if you exclude hatred of the Dallas Cowboys, mowing the lawn, and mosquitos.

They don't seem to understand that. I don't live my life based on who I hate.

I would respectfully disagree. The religious right is NOT the GOP. The GOP is Grover Norquist and Rush Limbaugh and Karl Rove. It is a delivery mechanism for the redistribution of wealth up the economic ladder. The party leadership uses the rubes to give the party the votes that their economic policies on their own wouldn't get.

But every now and then the rubes assert themselves, and now is one of those times. Maybe.

I agree it'll probably come soon if it's going to come at all. There's a filing deadline coming up that makes it harder to withdraw once a candidate moves past that stage.

If I had to bet, I'd say that in the next day or two he will actually flat out withdraw from the race, eschewing the "suspending my campaign" bit.

Yep. The filing deadline is tomorrow afternoon, IIRC. That's why there are so many voices in the GOP calling for him to withdraw today. If he's going to be forced out, it has to happen in the next 24 hours.

If he digs his heels in, the GOP is screwed because there's no way in hell that the McCaskill campaign will let this issue die between now and November.

My understanding is that it has to be tomorrow, otherwise his campaign incurs all of the costs associated with getting a different name on the ballot. Considering that the party and Rove have already made clear they are cutting off all funds, I think we are only hours away from a tearful announcement.

ha, Just received this from NRO:

Step Aside, Todd Akin
By The Editors

Representative Todd Akin, the Republican nominee for Senator from Missouri, became nationally notorious yesterday for saying something stupid. In the course of explaining why he believes abortion should be illegal even when pregnancies result from rape, he said that in cases of “legitimate rape” the victim’s body has defense mechanisms that usually prevent pregnancy.

Give the man points for concision, at least: His remarks combined several mistakes with brutal efficiency. There is no evidence for Akin’s biological claim. The frequency with which rape results in pregnancy has no bearing on whether abortion should be allowed when it does. And while it is not completely clear what point Akin was trying to make with the phrase, “legitimate rape” should not appear in any good one.

Only a small minority of Americans opposes abortion in cases of rape, and some Democrats are now trying to claim that the real scandal in Akin’s remarks is that he, and some other Republicans, belongs to it. For the very same reason this issue offers Democrats political opportunities, however, it is only a theoretical one: No state is going to ban abortion in the case of rape even if Roe v. Wade is overruled — and even if Akin were elected to the Senate. Everyone knows this. (In contrast, Obama’s minority position on abortion — that infants who survive abortion should have no legal protection if they are at an early stage of development — led him to fight an actual change in the law.)

Some voters may nevertheless find a candidate’s theoretical view so abhorrent that they cannot support him, and it is a perfectly legitimate issue for opponents to raise. Most Republicans who hold the view that unborn children have a right to life regardless of the circumstances of their conception will have the wit to explain themselves in a way that prevents most voters who disagree from vetoing them for that reason.

While Akin is a stalwart conservative and an honorable man, we regret to say that he inspires no such confidence. That is one reason why Senator Claire McCaskill, the sitting Democratic senator, boosted him during the Republican primaries with ads calling him a “true conservative.” She knew that she is the weakest Senate incumbent on the ballot this year and that her only hope was to draw a weak opponent. Akin won a three-way primary with a plurality of the vote; there was no run-off. McCaskill’s strategy is now paying off.

Akin has backed off from his remarks, albeit with the politician’s excuse of “misspeaking.” People who make such remarks on television are typically capable of making more like them, or rather incapable of exercising the judgment to refrain. We suspect that this same lack of judgment will cause Akin to blow past tomorrow evening’s deadline for him to leave the race and allow the Republicans to select a better nominee. We hope the congressman, who surely wants to see a Senate with as much conservative strength as possible next year, will prove us wrong.

Even more striking, perhaps, the 2012 platform, as drafted, contains no mention in its foreign policy section of Cuba, a topic of intense interest to pro-Republican Cuban-American voters in south Florida and a set-piece of Republican dogma for a half-century.

I Misspoke—What I Meant To Say Is 'I Am Dumb As Dog Shit And I Am A Terrible Human Being'

Because, of course, it’s all about context. And yes, when you take what I said out of context, I can see how it might sound like I’m denying that women can be impregnated via rape. This is, I assure you, not what I was trying to express at all. Such is the age we live in that one little sentence excerpted in a news report can come back to haunt a person in a pretty big hurry. But if you actually go back and look at the remarks closely, you’ll see that what I was actually trying to convey in my statement was that

(1) I am a big fucking idiot,

(2) I am a nauseating slug of a human being who doesn’t deserve to live, and

(3) I am essentially everything that’s wrong with this country and with humanity in general.

Honestly, that’s all I was trying to get across there. It was a simple misunderstanding, really.

Paul Ryan and Todd Akin Partnered On Radical ‘Personhood’ Bill Outlawing Abortion And Many Birth Control Pills

Ryan and Akin also cosponsored a federal personhood bill, the Sanctity of Human Life Act of 2009, which declares that a fertilized egg is entitled to the exact same legal rights as a human being:

(1) the Congress declares that–

(A) the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution is vested in each human being, and is the paramount and most fundamental right of a person; and

(B) the life of each human being begins with fertilization, cloning, or its functional equivalent, irrespective of sex, health, function or disability, defect, stage of biological development, or condition of dependency, at which time every human being shall have all the legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood; and

(2) the Congress affirms that the Congress, each State, the District of Columbia, and all United States territories have the authority to protect the lives of all human beings residing in its respective jurisdictions.

Lest there be any doubt, this bill is unconstitutional. Congress does not have the power to overrule Roe v. Wade by an ordinary statue, only a constitutional amendment could serve that purpose. Moreover, even if Roe were overruled by the Supreme Court, Ryan and Akin’s bill still attempts to redefine who “the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution” applies to. Again, changing the meaning of the Constitution can only be done through an amendment, not through an ordinary Act of Congress.

Should Ryan and Akin’s personhood agenda take effect, however, it would drastically reduce women’s reproductive choice. The bill declares that a human egg obtains “all the legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood” the moment it merges with a human sperm. Thus, a Blastocyst-American would not only enjoy the same constitutional status as a fully grown adult, it would also enjoy any “legal” attributes enjoyed by adults. Because every states’ law makes it a crime to kill a human adult, the likely effect of Ryan and Akin’s personhood bill would be to treat killing a fertilized egg as the same thing as homicide.

I mostly agree but you missed something. see, the charges and photos aren't enough. You need a conviction. Of course since the typical conviction occurs more than 9 months after the crime...

At some point in the not too distant future, we're going to have to write "former network CNN." the only time I ever watch CNN anymore is if there is a critical national emergency that is being covered and MSNBC goes off to commercial break. Even Fox actually does breaking stuff pretty well because there isn't time for the Wizard to send down talking points about it.

Who the fuck "hates farming?" That doesn't even make any damn sense.
Are there people out there who lay awake at night unable to sleep because of their seething hatred of Farming?

The religious right is the Republican party now. Akins sounded very comfortable and matter of fact about it because this is what they have all been taught to believe and i am sure Akin was probably shocked to find out this does not have the backing of the medical community. These people are very insular.

I hate farming. It's bloody tough work during the summer. Up at 4:00am, work your ass off until 9:00pm then sleep for 5 hours and do it all again the next day. If you can't get the crop off before mid September then you work even harder because you know the frost is just around the corner.

The Onion: Pregnant Woman Relieved To Learn Her Rape Was Illegitimate

Though she was initially upset following the brutal sexual assault last month that left her pregnant, victim Martha Byars told reporters she was relieved Sunday to learn from Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) that her ability to conceive her unwanted child proves she was not, in fact, legitimately raped.

“Being violently coerced into having sex was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, so I take comfort in knowing it wasn’t actually rape,” Byars said of the vicious encounter in which she was accosted in an alleyway by a stranger, pinned to the ground, and penetrated against her will for 25 minutes. “It was absolutely horrific—I felt violated in the worst way imaginable—but thanks to Congressman Akin, I now realize it must, at some level, have been consensual after all.”

“Thank God for that,” Byars added. “I’m so relieved to know that my child’s father, the man who muffled my screams as he forcefully penetrated me over and over and left me hemorrhaging to death on the street, is not a rapist.”

Republicans Condemn Akin's Comments As Blemish On Party's Otherwise Spotless Women's Rights Record

In the wake of last weekend’s highly controversial comments from Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO), top Republican officials condemned the congressman’s statements Monday, calling them a black mark on the party’s otherwise flawless record on women’s rights issues. “Throughout our history, whether it’s been our position on birth control, abortion, or equal pay for equal work, Republicans have always stood together with women, listening to their needs and fighting for issues that are are important to them. That is why we were stunned that someone from our own party could have made such insensitive remarks or expressed such uninformed opinions about women,” said Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, calling Akin’s comments an outlier, especially when one considers the huge, progressive strides—both personally and professionally—the GOP has helped women make over the years. “We apologize for Congressman Akin. And we want the nation’s women to know that they will continue to have no greater ally than the the Republican Party.” Priebus added that while there was certainly no excuse for Akin’s comments, after 150 years without a single insensitive remark against women, perhaps the GOP was due.

Check the URL. I forgot to add the credit to The Onion. :)

Odd that I thought it was an actual quote from the RNC. How could I have thought?

Apologies to all.

It may be a distinction without a difference, but membership has always been open to all races. Blacks could not be ordained into the priesthood until the '70's.

I've read what their various leaders have said about blah people.
That is all.

How could they be rapes? Those women got pregnant.

Not odd at all. It is no more absurd than Huckabee's quite incredible statement about the results of rape but the latter is absolutely genuine.

Yes. And I missed the editing time before I noticed I'd left off credit to The Onion.

re: #177 garhighway

I hear you, but look at the results: Romney's the nominee and his ward Robin the Tax Cut Boy is his running mate. If the GOP was truly in thrall to the socons, we'd be seeing one of THEM up there. Every candidate in recent memory has been an economic conservative first and social conservative second if at all. The party knows where its bread is buttered.

Only by the American definition of 'conservative'.

There is nothing 'conservative' about the trickle-down nuttery that the Republican candidates worship. It is radical and extreme, the very antithesis of 'conservative'. Much as the GOP itself is now radical and extreme, the very antithesis of 'conservative'.

increasingly I find Huckabee to be one of the most vile pieces of crap in the entire political landscape. His folksy Christian charm masks some of the most evil, bigoted opinions out there. His Fox News program is like watching an episode of Hee Haw meets 60 minutes and certainly vies for the title of least informative program on the air. I made the mistake of listening to him interview Tony Perkins yesterday and together their defaming of the Souther Poverty Law Centre was one of the most frustrating things I have ever heard.

If this Breitbart-fawning buffoon wants to fall on her sword defending the troglodyte Akin, so be it.

That flushing sound you hear is any remaining credibility that she might have had as a sound-minded, rationally-thinking political commentator going down the drain.

That's just it -- she's never had any credibility as a sound-minded, rationally-thinking political commentator.

Sometimes I get the feeling I'll start screaming and never stop.

So much to say about Huckabee's idiocy, but how about this. Robison was born in 1943. Ethel Waters in 1896. Just where would these mothers go for an abortion other than a dark alley? And a Black woman? Would she just... oh I don't know... saunter into the nearest hospital requesting one? She didn't even have the vote!!

On the bright side, if you're a colossal moron like Akin, you probably want an even bigger, shittier moron defending you.

I've never seen a picture of her until just now. What is she, 12? Maybe 15? Does she have children? Has she lived a life even a little? And why do people listen to her?

As a mother of three and some years behind me, I look at her and think "walk in my shoes, little girl. And are you available for babysitting?"

re: #58 Gus

The first ad from the Obama camp is going to be brutal. It's going to include the sound bite, images of Paul Ryan and Todd Akin together, perhaps some other things Romney himself has said about banning abortion.

As well he should. I have no interest in pretending that this isn't a legitimate issue even if someone wants to say "hey, lookie over here! Economy!" They aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, I would expect candidates that were really concerned with the economy and the wallets of the average American (ahem, Obama) would be advocating policies that actually address those issues.

She's 33 and has two children. I think attacking her ideas would be a better approach. Defending Todd Akin is stupid no matter how many kids you have or what year you were born.

319 Patricia Kayden  Tue, Aug 21, 2012 4:15:43pm

What a nightmare if Akin wins and Romney/Ryan win as well. What a nightmare for womens rights, to say the least.
Dana Loesch is an idiot. There is nothing a Republican could do that would make her condemn him/her. Hyper partisanship to a fault.
