Romney Says Todd Akin Should Exit Missouri Senate Race

Flop sweat
Politics • Views: 18,265

The Republican Party is in full retreat; the Associated Press just issued this breaking news alert:

Breaking (4:06PM EDT): Mitt Romney says Republican candidate Todd Akin should exit Senate race in Mo.

This is pure political fear. The word is getting out that Todd Akin’s caveman views are nearly identical to the views of Romney’s extreme anti-choice running mate Paul Ryan, and Mitt’s trying to get a tourniquet on it.

If Romney wants Akin to step down for what he said, does that mean he's going to ditch Ryan for believing it?

Well, the LDS official line is that a woman who has been raped can have an abortion. She has committed no sin.

Also, an LDS bishop could give her a waiver for free counseling at an LDS social services location. Usually such waivers are given on a need basis, and frankly, no LDS bishop is going to tell me who was raped and what they did about it (it's none of my business), so I don't know if they do, I just know that they could.

Yeah, I don't understand the reasoning behind this. He said his piece last night and that would have been sufficient to curdle the milk of the evangelicals. To now jump up and call on Akin to bail out with just a little over an hour to go does nothing but rub salt into the wound.

I await that platform to advocate the formation of a secret enclave for the party and industrial elite along with the construction of a giant flying head for their dealings with the underclass.

Parenthood USA is already lamenting that Romney is turning Ryan rather than Ryan turning Romney. Not exactly shocking given the circumstances, but I cant tell you how many comments I came across regarding true believers saying that they will vote for Romney now that he has selected Ryan who was thought to be one of their own. Base will not come out for Romney.

41 lawhawk  Tue, Aug 21, 2012 1:32:33pm

Romney can do himself no favors here, regardless of the stance he takes.

Denounce Akin and call him to quit: causes many in his base to rebel against him.

Do nothing: Causes everyone else to get pissed at Romney and he loses independent votes, a profile in courage.

Support Akin: Keeps the socon support, but loses everyone else.

And if Akin doesn't quit after Romney tells him he should get out, then it shows just how weak Romney is and that he'll knuckle under the right wing at the first opportunity (another warning that the right wing is now mainstream GOP).

I do believe that this is the perfect opportunity to use the word schadenfreude.

Can't imagine Akin would bail out, considering the present situation. He's holding a slim lead over an incumbent that hasn't succeeding in breaking 45% in the polls, in a race that the party can't afford to gamble on. Within 24 hours the talking point on this will be that this is another Gotcha moment hyped by the liberal main stream media. The only question is who will lead it. It won't be Palin (note how quiet she has been) because Akin defeated her candidate. I predict Michelle Bachmann will seize the opportunity for the spotlight.

120 Gus  Tue, Aug 21, 2012 2:01:51pm

Meanwhile. The GOP platform committee is typing up an agenda which perfectly reflects Todd Akin's world view.

121 jaunte  Tue, Aug 21, 2012 2:02:10pm

From March 2:

Does the Blunt amendment's close defeat, coupled with the lack of action in the House, signal an end to the polarizing fight over "something that is hardly the top issue to American voters," or will conservatives be back with another challenge?

Conservatives won't quit — nor should they: "Democrats managed to wrangle enough votes to table the Blunt amendment" this time, says Ed Morrissey at Hot Air, but only after "a lot of ridiculous spin" over how this is a fight for birth control. It's not. Instead, this fight "has everything to do with allowing people to freely practice their religion without interference from government," and that's too important for conservatives to give up on. "Clearly, this issue isn't going away."
"Senate kills Blunt amendment on religious conscience exemption..."

It's time for Republicans to give up: "Democrats seem eager to fight over the proposal," says Steve Benen at The Maddow Blog. And with 63 percent of the public siding with Obama, it's no wonder many Republicans are "looking for an escape hatch that doesn't exist."

Oh, it's all bullshit. Todd Akin's views are perfectly reflected in the GOP platform. They're also perfectly reflected by Paul Ryan.

All this outrage from the GOP is only because McCaskill was vulnerable and Akin opening his pie hole and spewing out pure, unvarnished wingnut gives her a chance at a comeback.

re: #115 makeitstop

I still think this is all theater.

Pretty much. All the calls for Akin to step down, to give up the race, are the party trying to put some distance between his opinions and their public face, even as they're crafting a party platform that basically mirrors everything he's saying. What it comes down to is they're just pissed that he voices these views out loud.

What a jaw-dropping spectacle this has become. It is all done for show. Let's be clear: every mainstream Republican agree with Akin's point of view. They just hate the way he said it because it makes him (and by extension, their Party) liable to attack. Akin has also single-handedly brought abortion and women's issues back to the forefront of the News cycle for the next several days, at a time when Paul Ryan had just been picked VP and the GOP (however misguided) want to focus on economics.

As for Romney, who knows what he thinks? He was once for women's reproductive rights when he governed Massachusetts. Now he says he is anti-choice. He will say absolutely anything to get elected. I have no idea where the "real Romney" stands on the matter. But seeing that Romney is from the wing of the GOP obsessed about profits, rather than the wing obsessed with prophets, my intuition is that Romney does not care either way about abortion. Now, would someone hurry up and pass his tax cuts.

There were wise sages earlier this year who pointed out the obvious: The GOP can't win if it chooses to focus on social issues. Hence the eagerness to focus on the economy, which they think is a winner of an issue when that's debatable at best.

Bryan Fischer Says Todd Akin is Like a Victim of Rape

After likening the backlash to Todd Akin’s comments on “legitimate rape” to the Pharisees’ persecution of Jesus, American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer is now comparing Akin to a victim of rape. After listing the growing chorus of conservative activists and media personalities who have called on Akin to quit the senate race, Fischer lamented that “everybody is gang tackling Todd Akin.” “You talk about a forcible situation, you talk about somebody being a victim of forcible assault, that would be Todd Akin,” Fischer maintained.

Obviously all this media attention is God's will and Akin should accept the blessing the Lord has given him.

Reminds me of a particularly unpleasant make-a-presentation unit in English 101. Anti-choice side (Very Very Catholic, natch) would literally counter-argue: 'BUT THINK OF THE BABIES'.

I expect a slightly higher level of discourse from a high schooler, never mind a Senate candidate.

THINK OF THE BABIES.

Call me crazy but... I miss Michael Steele. He was so much more fun.

As a Wisconsin voter, I should have a picture of me holding my deer rifle, prayer book & a copy of Das Kapital and email it to Ryan's office.

That'd be priceless!

Gus is a retweetin' machine.

It's warm and I'm a little hungover. ;)

re: #227 Targetpractice

There were wise sages earlier this year who pointed out the obvious: The GOP can't win if it chooses to focus on social issues. Hence the eagerness to focus on the economy, which they think is a winner of an issue when that's debatable at best.

Yeah, they're gettin' right on top of that economy message.

The only way this could get better is if Akin told us now what he thinks about two men getting married and adopting rape babies.

Bryan Fischer Says Todd Akin is Like a Victim of Rape

Fischer lamented that “everybody is gang tackling Todd Akin.” “You talk about a forcible situation, you talk about somebody being a victim of forcible assault, that would be Todd Akin,” Fischer maintained.

Buh buh buh free speech?

If I were a debate moderator, this would be my question:

Representative Ryan, which federal agency would you charge with the responsibility of verifying that all women who obtained abortions were victims of forcible rape?

I don't like to admit to it, but I'm thoroughly enjoying watching the misogynistic, anti-choicers being hoist by their own petard.

Answer A:

There are 5 of them. But I can only name 4.

Answer B:

All of them...all the ones that have been in front of me all these years.

I haven't listened to the Hannity radio show in a LONG time. Their bumper spots sound exactly like the movie Idiocracy.

Were they plugging the hot new game show, "Ow, My Balls"?
