Nancy Pelosi: Todd Akin Is ‘Doggie Doo’ on the GOP Shoe

Couldn’t have said it better myself
Politics • Views: 36,773

I can add nothing to Nancy Pelosi’s astute assessment of the situation:

What the congressman from Missouri has done, though, she says, has shown that’s not the case – and made him “the doggie doo on the shoe of his party, the tattoo on Paul Ryan that they won’t be able to get off.’’

I don't care much for Pelosi, but in this instance, she's right.

I would add Akin is dog crap and skunk piss on the GOP shoes

This gives me a chance to get on one of my soapboxes:

So what if an athlete finds some way to enhancer her/his performance? The idea of banning "substances", if pressed to its exhaustive coverage, would also include making sure each competitor gets the same food and medical coverage. After all, is it fair that some people can afford better food than others, or can afford better medical care than others?

This idea of banning "substances" is to me just an extension of the idiotic "War on Drugs".

Is it possible that what Mitt is actually hiding is that he has not given 10% of his income to the LDS over the years, and he will be humiliated in his own community. Failure to tithe particularly for someone as wealthy as Romney would be quite an embarrassment.

24 HappyWarrior  Thu, Aug 23, 2012 7:20:35pm

I really am wondering if he does have something to hide. Something illegal, something embarrassing, I dunno. The fact that he's gone against precedent for both parties and that he still continues to refuse to release them as pressure mounts really makes me think there's something that stinks in there that he doesn't want the public knowing about.

One of three things I think:

1. Years of paying far below 15%. (legally)
2. Received Amnesty for swiss bank account
3. Did not tithe the full amount he should have

I really hate the fact that Mitt refers to tithing as being like paying taxes. According to the LDS website

"Tithing funds are used for:

Constructing temples, chapels, and other buildings.
Providing operating funds for the Church.
Funding the missionary program (This does not include individual missionary expenses.)
Preparing materials used in Church classes and organizations.
Temple work, family history, and many other important Church functions.
Education."

I fail to see how any of that is for the benefit of the country generally.

I agree with the no steroids thing. They are dangerous, not only for the athletes but for the people around them because of the rage issues the steroids cause/contribute to. If steroids are allowed then in order for any athlete to be able to compete he/she will also have to do them. Pro athletes in a lot of sports get their bodies torn up enough and pay for it for their lifetimes. Dying young(er) due to steroid use isn't helpful to them or their sports.

Probably, the justification being that kids will emulate their role models and become giant roid-beasts.
But who didn't suspect say, Jerry McGuire, was roided out? No one cared until it became someone's mission in life to knock these athletes off of their high horses.
It feels more like a witch hunt, a really expensive, waste of time, because it stops nothing. It's just going to be harder to detect the new stuff.

Consider that the major base element that Romney has to appease are a competing, aggressively-proselytizing Christian sect. He may not want to shine a light on tithing because it drives that home.

I'm guessing you are not an athlete. My 18 yr old son has walk on tryouts for college baseball in two weeks. He knows he will be competing against users.

36 HappyWarrior  Thu, Aug 23, 2012 7:35:13pm

I think all this really has shed light on why even with loads of personal wealth and wealthy supporters that Mitt Romney at his core is a weak candidate. He's not charismatic or likable at all and that's being kind. He's had to go back on the past stances that made him a viable candidate when he first ran for and got into office in the first place because he would rather change his mind than have to explain to an increasingly right wing Republican base why abortion should be legal, why government health care can be a positive thing, etc. And then there's his business record. He wants to be seen as a job creator and successful businessman but at the same time he gets irate when his business record is being analyzed. He's just not the kind of guy you want running your country. How sad is it that Norquist has basically said he wants Mitt to be a puppet for Ryan and the true believers. In a way I almost feel bad for Mitt because he had to sell out a ton to become so viable but then again it's hard to feel bad for him when he engages in some of the rhetoric that he engages in.

I am for banning any substance that if, taken long-term, would cause damage to the athlete. Anabolic steroids fall into this pattern.

No athlete should be pushed into a position of harming his or herself to compete effectively.

re: #32 SanFranciscoZionist

Mitt's being weird. Giving money to your church is a good thing. It does not count as taxes.

It's not "weird", according to various beliefs common with fundamentalist theists. The idea goes like this: the only authority a government has legitimately must come from God. Thus if a government is to collect money morally, one must find a Biblical basis for it.

In this view, government operations like welfare is justifiable only if it is seen in the light of doing what God has commanded the Church (read "Israel") to do.

This view looks upon the Mosaic law's tithing commands as a "tax". Thus this sets up the equation tax=tithe.

When I hear "Let them take whatever they want! They're professionals!" all I can think of is my kid or your kid being fortunate enough to maybe have a shot at being a "professional" athlete at some endeavor, having to take something that eventually will lead to damage or worse, just to level the playing field, because everybody else is doing it. Just like the MLB home run blizzard and the mass amnesia of the entire sporting world. Only later did the league even start to admit there was a problem. I don't want any kid thinking they have to "juice" or worse to have a shot. If that happens, it's no longer sports, but engineering. I'll step off my soapbox now. Nite all.

The LDS church is routinely attacked for being "too rich."

As the person who sits in a kept-up building and takes my kids to the youth programs, I'm good with spending my tithing money on that, even if we might pay more into the program than we would if it were pay-per-kid rather than a percentage of your income. If I'm paying for some buildings and some youth programs in inner-city wards, I'm okay with that. In fact, I hope I do pay more in than I get out.

First of all, that appears to just be a comment on the site's message board, so you can't imply it officially represents The View. And if tithing counts as charity, naturally Utah would come out on top. Plus:

“The reasons for the discrepancies among states, cities, neighborhoods are rooted in part in each area’s political philosophy about the role of government versus charity,” the study’s authors noted.

I remember some French newspaper sayiing they tested his samples and they came up positive, but I figured that once the custody of the samples was violated, any test would be meaningless. Otherwise, you just have the testimony of guys who were users themselves. I smell witchhunt.

I would laugh my ass off if Crazy Uncle Liberty's minions actually managed to cause a floor fight or otherwise disrupt the convention. I don't see that happening, but I've been wrong before.

For all of their earnest sound and fury, you'd think they'd make an even token effort to be seen. Sounds like they're just going to roll over.

I would imagine this is Ol' Doc Paul's last go around. I don't see his boy Rand as having the charisma to keep the Libertarians in the GOP going. Plus, he's bat shit crazy.

That's right. He was next to last or something like that. All I know is the Rays are 2.5 games out with the best pitching in baseball right now.;)

O's are right on your tail. It would be crazy if they finished 1 and 2. It would be a nice reminder that payroll isn't everything. Plus anytime the Yankees miss the playoffs, an angel gets its wings.

I really can't see Rand Paul getting the cult following his Dad did because Rand unlike Ron is in the Senate and actually sometimes has to go along with the GOP establishment on things. Plus, of course cult of personalities don't always go from father to son so smoothy. Cromwell's son in England was nowhere near the figure his father was.

NBC Latino has up an opinion piece explaining why the GOP is losing so badly among the non-white non-male portion of the population, and lamenting the state of the of the Republican party:

Opinion: GOP “Akin” for punishment

[...]

This is not healthy for democracy. It’s certainly not healthy for blacks or Latinos that they feel they have no options, and if you have seen how dysfunctional a single party state can be, one need not look any further than California, where the California delegation to the Republican Convention will be led by none other than former governor Pete Wilson.

That’s the best the party has left in California. Fifteen years after they went whole hog after the growing Latino population, the Party digs deep into the bench and they come up with General Custer. That’s amazing.

[...]

I'm not really groking what Nuno is thinking about "democracy", but at this point I pretty much have decided that the GOP has to die - fractionate more accurately, and then the Democratic Party has to follow. Let a re-synthesis occur among the political infrastructure, one that is more able to respond to today's needs.

I just don't see the GOP splitting up anytime soon. The moderates still vote Republican, despite the party leadership behaving more and more like whitebread Taliban.

Maybe when that faction develops a frigging spine, things will change. Not holding my breath on that.

He makes a lot of good points. Anyhow, what he says about the demographics really raises some good points. The Republican Party is going to have to either adapt to new realities and demographics or be drastically weakened as a political force nationally or even eliminated. The Democrats in the 1980's faced a dillema where they couldn't espouse New Deal economic rhetoric anymore. The problem the Republicans have is that they really don't have something resembling a DLC like group that the Democrats did. Too many of them are convinced that their ideology as is just fine. If they dropped the social warfare rhetoric, they'd actually have a shot at attracting some younger voters. Despite what they believe, your average younger voter really isn't that far to the left on economic issues, he's more of a social liberal and that includes many young voters who may consider themselves conservatives.

NRO contributors aren't done DERPing over the Akin fracas, the latest:

Akin and His Critics
Akin was wrong about the facts, but his mistaken belief wasn’t outlandish.

I suggest reading the whole thing to get the non-logic, aggressively anti-intellectual, "its sounds right, let's seeks out science-y stuff to not-read and just roll naked confirmation bias."

Especially FAIL for: confabulating long term or chronic stress with short-term stress activation, and pretending Kevin Williamson had a point with his caveman MRA stuff.

Do you know how Mike Piazza was picked? A friend of Tommy Lasordas asked him to pick him in the 13th (I may be wrong here) round. He seemed to be a good ball player.

Piazza is Lasorda's god son.

re: #42 freetoken

This view looks upon the Mosaic law's tithing commands as a "tax". Thus this sets up the equation tax=tithe.

They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?

Should we pay or shouldn't we?" But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it."

They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied.

Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." And they were amazed at him.

My father once used that passage to great effect when dealing with a crazy anti-Semite at a rally, back in the old Soviet Jewry days. The crazy guy was talking to one of our volunteers, who listened to him for a bit, and then said in a carrying and panicked tone, 'So WHY do you want to kill the rabbis again?"

That got attention. Someone went for the cops, who up until then had only been there to prevent us from storming the Soviet consulate. While that was going on, my dad went over to contain the crazy. Crazy is now babbling, which ends with "What did Jesus say to the tax collector?!"

My dad puts his hands on the man's shoulder and says, very slowly and calmly, stretching it out like he's reading at Mass, "Our Lord Jesus Christ said to the tax collector, render under Caesar those things that are Caesar's, but render unto God to those things that belong to God."

Which took long enough for one of the cops to approach, and say, "I'm here today representing Caesar. You're under arrest."

I'm in the process of trying to round up PDFs of all the state GOP party platforms. Some of the websites are...*facepalm*

Most recent example: Iowa. The featured content slider on the homepage talks about victory, take back our state, the upcoming RNC, look at our shiny new website, and join the Patriot Club! Look, over there—we even have a photo of some generic brownish colored people manning the phone banks because, y'know, big tent!

Underneath that is the most recent news, from August 17th: Get your free Chick-Fil-A gift card! (Okay, not exactly free—you have to join the Patriot Club for $10/mo. and they send you a $10 gift card.) It's okay to hate gays not to be PC! Personal liberty! First Amendment! Limited government (unless you're a woman)!

They make my brain hurt.

Mitt's being weird. Giving money to your church is a good thing. It does not count as taxes.

No it isn't, particularly when it is used to restrict the rights of others (see Proposition 8)
