Todd Akin to Hold Press Conference at 5:15 ET

Missouri caveman make announcement

Forecast: probable bail-out due to high pressure.

Todd Akin to Hold Press Conference at 5:15 ET.

St. Louis - Todd Akin will hold a press conference in St. Louis County today at 4:15pm central time.  Details to follow.

If he is bailing and not just jerking everyone around again, the knuckleheads who donated money to Akin now get to pay for him to obtain a court order and reprint the ballots — just to maintain the charade that Akin is not representative of the Republican Party, even though the GOP’s vice presidential candidate has exactly the same views as Akin on women’s rights.

UPDATE at 8/24/12 1:26:37 pm

Excellent! He’s not bailing out after all.

UPDATE at 8/24/12 2:28:12 pm

The press conference just finished, and hallelujah! He’s staying in the race. I’m sure Claire McCaskill couldn’t be happier.

Ryan is going to insist that he supports "exceptions" on abortions, but will see to it that they are worded so striclty that nobody will be able to use them.

Just a ploy to make him look more "moderate" than his caveman party mates.

This should be good. I think he's going to stay in it for the long haul.

TPM says he's staying in the race:

[Link: livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com...]

My guess is that he just wants to remind Mitt Romney that he's still around and that he's the king of the withering ignorance and derp. You know, because Mitt Romney really wants Akin in the news again right before the RNC starts.

I'm not surprised if that's the case. Bet the establishment is pissed because this guy and his backass backwards can be linked to Romney and Ryan.

Anyone want to bet on the wording of his presser?

I'm retiring from the race because of the damage done to my family and I don't want to put them in further harm's way after receiving threats this week over comments I made.

It's a sad state of affairs when people can't honestly debate about politics. People get their panties in a bunch about abortion and womens rights. I know that my many supporters will come out in support of my fellow Republicans, so even as I leave this race, my views will still carry the day.

In other words, expect him to spin this as wholly the fault of the media and not because he expressed misogynistic thoughts that have no business being in public office.

Facts overtake the snark - apparently he's going to stay in the race, which means he'll focus on spinning this as protecting his constituents against the evil liberal media and that he has no intention of standing aside.

Akin is a politician who believes he is on a mission from God. The more the GOP leaders try to get him to drop out, the more it will remind Akin of the scriptures and how the great prophets always faced adversity and scorn. From a Newsmax article:

"The Texas congressman won’t be formally nominated at the gathering, and he won’t speak. So Romney doesn’t have to worry about Paul fans making a big ruckus, Politico reports.

The defeated candidate has a majority of delegates from Nevada, Iowa, and Minnesota. But you need to control five states to be officially recognized on the floor. The Paul camp sought a majority in Louisiana, Massachusetts, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Maine. But lawyers for Romney deftly deployed rules and negotiations to keep that from happening."

In Maine, there was an establishment power play that replaced Paul delegates with Rmoney delegates. And the Paul supporters are not happy about it..

His followers won a majority of delegate slots in Iowa, Maine, Minnesota and Nevada.

But the Maine delegation underwent a makeover on the convention’s eve. After several hours of discussion, the credentials committee voted overwhelmingly to substitute 10 Paul delegates with 10 aligned with Romney.

No, they can't. They have no power whatsoever over Amaury Sport Organization or Union Cycliste Internationale. USADA didn't award the prizes nor do they have any retroactive power over the official TDF record books. It's all bluster, they're arrogating themselves to a position they simply do not hold.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

I'm thinking that Armstrong wasn't doping. He was tested before races and during training, anytime they wanted a sample. I'm pretty sure I had read that his samples were tested later, too, as the techniques got better and he still was coming up negative.

Off-topic: What's up with this USADA deal? We have a federal agency that investigates doping? I've never heard of this before.

Quoth Wiki:

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) is a non-profit organization and the national anti-doping organization (NADO) for the United States. The organization is charged with managing the anti-doping program for U.S. Olympic, Paralympic, Pan-American and ParaPan American sport. Its work includes in-competition and out-of-competition testing, the results management and adjudication process, the provision of drug reference resources, the therapeutic-use exemption process, various scientific research initiatives, and athlete and outreach education. USADA is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

USADA is a signatory to, and responsible for implementation in the United States of, the World Anti-Doping Code, widely considered the basis for the strongest and strictest anti-doping programs in sports. In 2001 the agency was recognized by the U.S. Congress as "the official anti-doping agency for Olympic, Pan American and Paralympic sport in the United States." USADA is not a government entity, however the agency is mostly funded ($9 million) by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), with its remaining budget generated from contracts for anti-doping services with sport organizations, most notably the United States Olympic Committee. The United States has also ratified the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport, the first global international treaty against doping in sport.

I've known lots of cyclists involved in competition, including national-level Cat 1 racers, and the fact is that doping of various kinds is absolutely everywhere in the sport. Everyone knows it.

So I have to say that if proof came out that Lance Armstrong was doing it too, I wouldn't even blink.

However, as he always points out, he did indeed undergo hundreds of drug tests, and passed them all. So he either regulated and timed his doping amazingly well, or he really is a clean rider.

In any case, drugs or not, there's no doubt that he's one of the best cyclists of all time. I'll never forget the Tour when he was on a climb with Ullrich, looked back at him as if to say, "Come on, let's go," and took off like a rocket up the hill -- after climbing for more than a hundred miles already. Nobody could follow him. He's a force of nature.

AFAIK we should be looking into putting a manned station right about where the JWST is going.

I do not see how you can take away titles and ban a competitor with anything less than "beyond a reasonable doubt" kind of standard. This thing reeks of a poorly motivated witch hunt.

Los Angeles (CNN) -- A man charged with breaking into LL Cool J's home Wednesday morning faces a long prison sentence if convicted because of his previous convictions, the prosecutor's spokeswoman said Thursday.

Jonathan Kirby, 56, suffered a broken nose, jaw and ribs when he encountered the muscular rapper-actor inside his Sherman Oaks, California, home, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons.

Arraignment for the suspect is not yet set, because he is still hospitalized for treatment of injuries inflicted by LL Cool J when he "physically detained" him, she said.

Yeah. we talked about that the other day.

"Mama said 'knock him out'", LL Cool J was heard to have said...

So, is the presser over?

Did Akin break new ground of Derp? I'm away from a TV and changing strings on a few guitars so I'm not watching.

You kinda own your links. I once pulled an obscure holocaust denier site off the top of a Google pile.

A really bad site to link is an easy mistake to make in a hurry from google. I have caught myself just in time once or twice. I'm leery of linking to any site I don't know well or at least by it's reputation here.

The disestablishment of American scientific institutions continues:

Nuclear Decelerator: Last U.S. Particle Collider on Chopping Block

As with manned space flight, some things are now just proving to be too expensive for the US to undertake. We will budget cut ourselves slowly backwards. It may take decades for the totality of the change to become large, but we are definitely pulling back on what we are willing to spend.

What angers me about this is that they are not too expensive for the US to undertake. All we have to do is pay for them. We have the money, we just won't - because taxes are ebil and the government never does anything. (I'd have wingnutted the last but couldn't get it to stay in line.)
