Bill Nye: Creationism Is Not Appropriate for Children

“If you want to deny evolution, fine … but don’t make your kids do it.”
Science • Views: 43,015

Three cheers for Bill Nye, the Science Guy, who has a video out for BigThink.com titled, “Creationism Is Not Appropriate for Children.”

Denial of evolution is unique to the United States. I mean, we’re the world’s most advanced technological—I mean, you could say Japan—but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens. People still move to the United States. And that’s largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn’t believe in that, it holds everybody back, really.

Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It’s like, it’s very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You’re just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place.

As my old professor, Carl Sagan, said, “When you’re in love you want to tell the world.” So, once in a while I get people that really—or that claim—they don’t believe in evolution. And my response generally is “Well, why not? Really, why not?” Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don’t believe in evolution. I mean, here are these ancient dinosaur bones or fossils, here is radioactivity, here are distant stars that are just like our star but they’re at a different point in their lifecycle. The idea of deep time, of this billions of years, explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your world view just becomes crazy, just untenable, itself inconsistent.

And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that’s completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that’s fine, but don’t make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need people that can—we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.

It’s just really hard a thing, it’s really a hard thing. You know, in another couple of centuries that world view, I’m sure, will be, it just won’t exist. There’s no evidence for it.

Denial of evolution is unique to the United States.

As far as nations normally listed as "highly developed" - yes, the US is unique as being strongly creationist.

However, there are many places in the world where creationism of one sort or another is believed. In that sense the US is not unique. However, many of these nations would not be considered highly developed.

The Right has so much power that they can get away with teaching creationism as a fact in certain school districts. I understand teaching creationism in religious schools, but I don't understand how that can fly in a public school where you have all kinds of religious/non-religious kids.

On the heels of the convention, let's review. The convention will feature:

• A tribute to Ron Paul.
• A gold standard.
• An anti-vaxxer (at least well known).
• Audit the Fed!
• Agenda 21 conspiracy.
• Seven birthers.

Does this sound familiar? It should since it's a reflection of Infowars and Prisonplanet. This is the new GOP. There's more to add but these have the most Alex Jones like flavor to it.

Religion has to bow to scientific evidence and science needs to respect faith in higher powers.

I'm not sure either part of that sentence is true. Religion, or religious people, don't have to bow to scientific evidence, they can operate contrary to what science would recommend. And science cannot respect faith in higher powers without scientific evidence, but scientists should respect people of faith for sure.

I don't know whether this is just a semantic nit pick or a difference of beliefs.

Goldbuggery Arrives On The GOP’s National Platform

"...Unfortunately for the GOP, there are huge policy problems with a gold standard. As Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke pointed out, there isn’t enough gold to back the supply of money the economy actually needs. Worse, a gold standard would shackle monetary policy’s ability to respond to economic downturns. Interest rates could not be lowered to combat recessions or high unemployment. Instead, they would be driven by the price fluctuations of the gold supply, regardless of the needs of the broader economy."

Gould's NOMA concept makes a great deal of sense to me. Of course, you have people who insist that 'science' is the only valid magisterium, and others who insist 'religion' is, and these two groups tend to simply reject the whole idea out of hand, and in fact, find it deeply irritating.

GOLD!

(from wiki)

Panic of 1837

The end of the Second Bank of the United States had produced a period of runaway inflation, but on May 10, 1837 in New York City, every bank began to accept payment only in specie (gold and silver coinage), forcing a dramatic, deflationary backlash.

Panic of 1857

In Britain, the Palmerston government circumvented the requirements of the Peel Banking Act of 1844 which required gold and silver reserves to back up the amount of money in circulation. This circumvention set off the Panic in Britain.[2] Beginning in September 1857, the financial downturn did not last long; however, a proper recovery was not seen until the American Civil War.[3]

Black Friday (1869)

Black Friday, September 24, 1869 also known as the Fisk/Gould scandal, was caused by two speculators’ efforts to corner the gold market on the New York Gold Exchange. It was one of several scandals that rocked the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant.

Panic of 1873

The depression was known as the "Great Depression" until the 1930s, but is sometimes now known as the Long Depression.[1] The panic was caused by the fall in demand for silver internationally, which followed Germany's decision to abandon the silver standard in the wake of the Franco-Prussian war.[2]
In 1871, Otto von Bismarck extracted a large indemnity in gold from France and ceased minting silver thaler coins.

Panic of 1884

Gold reserves of Europe were depleted and the New York City national banks, with tacit approval of the United States Treasury Department, halted investments in the rest of the United States and called in outstanding loans.

Panic of 1893

Gold reserves of Europe were depleted and the New York City national banks, with tacit approval of the United States Treasury Department, halted investments in the rest of the United States and called in outstanding loans.

Panic of 1896

The Panic of 1896 was an acute economic depression in the United States that was less serious than other panics of the era precipitated by a drop in silver reserves and market concerns on the effects it would have on the gold standard. Deflation of commodities prices drove the stock market to new lows in a trend that began to reverse only after the 1896 election of William McKinley.

I would say that NOMA's intention is not that people sit at different tables. It doesn't visualize 'science people' and 'religion people', but identifies different uses for the two. (Gould was himself agnostic, and IIUC, would have identified things like ethics as being part of the 'religious' magisterium. It's not strictly a matter of deism or mysticism.) I'd also argue that it actually works beautifully in practice. Most people are able to allow their spiritual beliefs and their scientific knowledge (or, their awareness of other people's scientific knowledge and know-how) to coexist, meet different needs, and not trample one another. The people who can't abide by that get all of the attention because they're loud and litigious and fanatical. I'm pretty sure the guy who goes to the Methodist church on Sundays, and then helps his kid do his project on dinosaurs is more normative than the creationism screamers, he's just not making any headlines.

What makes these people dangerous is that they want to upset what is actually a well-accepted way of keeping these things sorted out, to bad purpose.

Bernanke's not just a Republican. He's also an academic who has written a great deal about the causes of the Great Depression. He's highly critical of the gold standard and has been on record saying that it doesn't solve anything and in fact causes more problems than it solves.

Bernanke on the gold standard douchebaggery:

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

“Unfortunately gold standards are far from perfect monetary systems,” he told the class of 30 undergraduates at George Washington University.

Tying the supply of money to the supply of a precious metal limits a government’s ability to address economic problems, Mr. Bernanke explained.

Adopting the gold standard, he said, “means swearing that no matter how bad unemployment gets you are not going to do anything about it.”

Having behind us the commercial interests and the laboring interests and all the toiling masses, we shall answer their demands for a gold standard by saying to them, you shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns. What so many people fail to appreciate is that monetary wealth or money supply has never been a conserved quantity of "stuff" --such as a precious metal or mineral. It's more of a process --a mere convention, or abstraction. We use it because it's sooo superior to barter --direct exchange of goods and/or services.

Hey Darth, you here? Got a good, simple bruschetta recipe? :)

What do you have in your cupboard? Just about anything will work. Throw a little onion, garlic, olive oil, and herbs in a blender and make a paste, then chop a couple of olives and crumble some feta into it and spread on the bread. Or chop a tomato, garlic and onion, saute a few minutes in oil and use that.

A few drops of basalmicbalsamic in the tomato version and you're golden.

Whoa, thanks to CuriousLurker, I now know there's something called the Republican Oath! I found it hidden in the New Mexico platform which reads like a bad history lesson.

I believe that the proper function of government is to do for the people those things that have to be done but cannot be done, or cannot be done as well by individuals, and that the most effective government is government closest to the people.
I believe that good government is based on the individual and that each person's ability, dignity, freedom and responsibility must be honored and recognized.
I believe that free enterprise and the encouragement of individual initiative and incentive have given this nation an economic system second to none.
I believe that sound money policy should be our goal.
I believe in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, age, sex or national origin. I believe that persons with disabilities should be afforded equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity as well.
I believe we must retain those principles worth retaining, yet always be receptive to new ideas with an outlook broad enough to accommodate thoughtful change and varying points of view.
I believe that Americans value and should preserve their feeling of national strength and pride, and at the same time share with people everywhere a desire for peace and freedom and the extension of human rights throughout the world.
Finally, I believe that the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.

Actually, all of those statements are wonderful ideals. They're mostly motherhood statements, but still great sentiments.

The problem is the last paragraph, because you really have to 'believe' that against all actual evidence, since the actions of the Republican Party and their written platforms are in direct opposition to almost all those ideals.

That's one way to fake a video, and it's not always immediately obvious.

re: #155 Charles Johnson

I don't like that someone posted this with Maddow's name without her permission - that crosses a big red line for me and makes me suspicious that there are ulterior motives at work.

I think the ulterior motive is that the person who secretly filmed the speech and uploaded it doesn't want to be found out for fear of recrimination. If someone was going to fabricate a clip, it would be more damning. The scene Mitt described sounds like a typical Chinese factory from a decade or two ago. Things are changing now, but early in the boom, that's how it was. Workers living in crowded dormitories with crowds of people trying to get in.

Scenario. He just bought the factory which is what he say. Afterward, Mitt Romney and Bain Capital helped improve working condition at the factory. Here's the problem too. Can we confirm that the presence of a fence around a Chinese factory like this constitutes slave labor? IOW. Is this a norm in China?

re: #135 Charles Johnson

Here's the video of Romney in question:

[Embedded content]

It looks like a real recording.

I can't get the sound, so I don't know what his tone of voice is, but he does not say that they bought this place, nor that those conditions took place when his company owned the place if they ever did, nor, honestly, does he describe something particularly unusual in terms of overseas manufacturing. He doesn't say that workers were chained to machines, or that they were forcing workers to prove they weren't pregnant monthly, or the dorms were locked from the outside. All of which is common in a lot of places.

Now, their explanation for the guard towers and the barbed wire would raise suspicion for me, and I don't know that everything was on the up-and-up. If they didn't continue with the purchase, Mitt may never have known. More culpably, if they did buy the place, he still may never have known.

But it sounds as though his takeaway lesson here was, "Damn, I got lucky in life." Which is something I have heard a lot of Americans, none of them as rich as Mitt say. And which is, frankly, not something I would ever expect Mitt Romney to be able to articulate.

Here's something I know for sure: I KNOW I've almost certainly bought shit, or benefited from someone else's purchase of it, made under worse circumstances than he's describing.

So, real, faked, edited, who knows...the fact is, he doesn't say Bain used slave labor, and what he's actually saying is probably something anyone who's doing business with China could say. Not all of them go there, either, they just take the shipment. And deflect criticism by promising things are different now every time some scandal gets out of control.

I'm not sure I'm a big enough hypocrite to jump on this. "Molasses and Rum and Slaves" keeps playing in my head.

The relatively high standard of living in America is in part propped up by the availability of cheap Chinese-made imported products from Walmart. But that is changing now. Wages are increasing and the unlimited labor pool is shrinking. Mitt may be in a whole different financial stratosphere than the typical American, but we have all "lived large" as you say thanks to the huge (and temporary) economic disparity between our countries.

I'm sure I would be a lot more dramatic, and they would probably find me trying to lecture to the workers about Clara Lemlich and the eight-hour work day in half-assed Mandarin. (In my imaginings, I speak half-assed Mandarin).

But I sure as hell ain't Mitt Romney.

Friend of mine was offered a job in Colombia. They had barbed wire to keep the workers OUT after hours. The workers were being picked off by militias. She told them to go to hell.

She's also not Mitt Romney, of course...

Or to guard their equipment and crap.

Of course, it could be to keep workers on the premises, but the truth is, outside the true prison camps, my impression is that you don't have to do that in China. You can get all the new workers you need if some of them get sick of the conditions and go home.

A fresh take from Andrea Seabrook, an ex-Capitol Hill reporter..
Politicians Lie–and Reporters Can't Report That

"I realized that there is a part of covering Congress, if you're doing daily coverage, that is actually sort of colluding with the politicians themselves because so much of what I was doing was actually recording and playing what they say or repeating what they say," Seabrook told Politico....

Seabrook seems pretty clear that the problem isn't the media: "I think the problem is the Congress itself. And we're all in the same positions, scrambling to figure out how the hell to cover these assholes."

Remember the stories from a year or two back about cartel activity on Lake Falcon, which is bisected by the US-Mexico border? Well, it seems Texas has acquired a response to the problem:

The American state of Texas is forming a naval unit of six gunboats to deal with the growing drug gang violence on both sides of the Rio Grande River. For some 2,000 kilometers, this river forms the border between Mexico and Texas. A few sections of the river are heavily used to smuggle drugs, and the smugglers often use violence if they are interfered with. The new Texas gunboat force will assist police and border patrol forces on land to prevent the drug gangs from escaping across the river and make the river safe for civilian use.

The six 11 meter (34 foot) gunboats (each equipped with six 7.62mm machine-guns, armor and night vision equipment) cost about $600,000 each. The federal government contributed some money for this and approves of the new riverine force. The six boats have boat trailers that enable them to be quickly moved to parts of the river where they are needed. The boats are manned by members of the Texas Highway Patrol.

Initially, the patrol boats are to be used to patrol Lake Falcon, which is a 33,854 hectare (83,650 acre) body of water formed behind one of the dams on the Rio Grande. For the last two years one of the major Mexican drug gangs has been increasingly active on the lake, killing Mexicans and Americans and generally misbehaving.

Just what TX needs: more guns.

In the hands of the Highway Patrol. Gunboats can be very useful in securing rivers and lakes against a hostile organization. We can see examples of this having happened in China (to tie in our earlier discussion), where both the RN and USN used river gunboats to suppress factions hostile to their nations' interests.

Need more proof that gunboats can produce good results? Ask Sen John Kerry, a man who commanded one such river gunboat in Vietnam.

re: #355 Gus

Seems like the shooter was after just one person:

Ercolino was walking toward Hazan Imports, across 33rd Street from the Empire State Building, and stopped to talk to a colleague. Johnson, dressed in a suit and tie and carrying a black canvas bag, walked up and shot Ercolino at close range, police said, and then stood over the man and shot him again - a total of five shots.

HISTORY OF ANIMOSITY

Johnson, carrying a second magazine in his bag, then walked "calmly" a block away, police said, past two officers stationed in front of the entrance to the Empire State Building.

A pair of construction workers who witnessed the shooting followed Johnson and tipped off the officers, pointing at Johnson as he passed, police said.

The two cops approached Johnson, who drew his gun, turned and pointed it directly at the officers from about eight feet away, police said. Police opened fire and shot him, Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told reporters.[Link: www.chicagotribune.com...]

Quite possibly. I'm inclined to give the cops the benefit of the doubt on this one, since they had good reason to suspect they were dealing with an active shooter. If it had been me injured, I wouldn't sue if my medical costs were paid.

No arguing with Catholic doctrine - or Jesus

In response to John Andrews’ letter praising a renegade band of Catholic nuns who are promoting ideas that are contrary to 2,000 years of Catholic teaching, here is the way it works:

There is and can never be a “debate” or “dialogue” or “modernization” of true traditional Catholic teaching. Even a pope can not overturn another pope!

Unfortunately, there are many post Vatican II Catholics — including some priests, bishops and nuns — who believe that church doctrine can be conveniently fused into what has become a worldwide mass delusion of grave sin and error. Since the 1960s, bad, old-fashioned, fleshy sin has been re-invented to favor the sin and sinner. Understanding and keeping up with the times becomes justification for further lapses into wickedness.

Those lapsed faithful who are still tempted to argue with Christ after 200 decades may find out in the fullness of time that their transitory beefs with Catholic doctrine do not hold up for eternity.

I don't know enough about what happened yet.

However, my first thought is of Steve Martin's speech in "Roxanne":

"I have a dream. It's not a big dream, it's just a little dream. My dream, and I hope you don't find it too crazy, is that if, God forbid, there ever was a fire, the people of this town would feel that calling the fire department was a wise thing to do. You can't have people when their houses are burning down saying, 'Whatever you do, for God's sake, don't call the fire department.' That would be bad."

NYPD might want to take that speech under assessment.

The recent debate over rape has to do with access to abortion. In that case rape is rape.

There are different circumstances under sentencing a rapist. If it was assault with a deadly weapon, that would obviously carry a stiffer sentence than a date rape in which both people were drunk and the woman passed out and was taken advantage of.

Both cases however, should be looked at the same as far as access to abortion.

436 wheat-dogg  Fri, Aug 24, 2012 10:09:33pm

Just now watched the purported Romney video. What's he's describing is pretty typical of factories in China. Some of my students have been those 18-to 23-year-olds working long days to make enough money to continue to go to school. Factories in China are usually self-contained, with dorms and dining facilities in the compound, which benefits the workers (they don't have to pay for rooms and food) and the employers (the workers are less likely to leave on the spur of the moment). The fences are there to keep people out, sure, but also to keep workers in. They also help minimize theft, both by the workers and by townspeople.

Two anecdotes. One girl, now a sophomore, spent four weeks this summer combing the hair of dolls to make it straight and pretty. For at least 12 hours a day. Her take for this summer ordeal was 2000 yuan ($314 or so), which is not quite half her school fees this year.

Another, now a junior, worked last summer but had to lie about being a college student. She pretended to be a migrant worker looking for a long-term job. When it came time to leave to resume classes, her manager had a fit and refused to let her leave until the end of the month. Needless to say, the boss also refused to pay her wages unless she stayed to the end of the month.

It's not exactly slave labor, but somehow over the last 60 years, China has lost track of that "worker's revolution".

Agreed. I would just point out that the skill level people want from the police in a spot like that would require essentially full time training, to the exclusion of so much else as to be untenable. 20 hours a week live fire practice. Then you need cops that have had real gunfights before. Even SWAT guys would be very hard pressed.

Short of that you are not going to have police that can consistently move, draw a handgun, and single shot "snipe" a man shooting at them. In a crowd. Surrounded by smooth concrete surfaces. Sometimes we have unrealistic expectations.

My favorite part about Mitt's dive into birtherism isn't what Rmoney said, its what the akinfolk who actually spent time off work on a beautiful Michigan Summer Friday to go to a Mitt Romney rally instead of going up North, hanging out on a boat, playing hooky, etc said. More please.

Susan Cardel, 51, said she thought Romney’s comment was “hysterical.”

“That is still a big issue, isn’t it?” Cardel said. “I think it is, that Obama wasn’t born in America. I think Romney was just making a statement. He wasn’t trying to be mean or anything.”

Jim Gorcya, 72, said he read Romney’s comment as a suggestion that Obama’s birth certificate is not real.

“Obama doesn’t have one,” Gorcya said. “He wasn’t born here, and he can’t find his.”

You make a good point there. Too many shots fired is exactly the mistake made today. I could not agree more.
It's really hard to not make a mistake like that. Believe me. I found this stuff out doing things like shooting .45 at a moving target, perhaps while moving and it's really hard to do even under less pressure than the real thing. There are sports (IDPA, IPSC, USPSA, Steel Challenge) that simulate this kind of shooting. If you ask the kind of people that can shoot that well you might be shocked to find out how hard they train. I did mostly IDPA in regular competition for a decade.

Kim Kardashian Calls For Change In Gun Laws Following Empire State Building Shootings

Something tells me Kim won't be in Tampa for the convention.

The people shot in Chicago were the result of gang problems, not loose gun laws. Illinois and Chicago already have tight gun laws.

What Chicago needs, IMO, is a declaration that the worst areas of gang activity are in a state of emergency. Something that could be used to justify a fairly harsh form of crackdown, which would take the form of a 8pm-6am curfew for all males under 50. The object would be to get the gangs off the street at night.

They surely are. But most of China's coasts are low crime enough to allow such things. Those masks would not be permitted here in many places due to laws forbidding wearing face masks. Indeed. I know I've posted this quote a lot but it fits here:

"Conspiracism is the sign of a mind in flight from reality." - Jonathan Kay

Most birthers are what Kay calls "failed historian" conspiracists. For them, the idea of Obama being born in Kenya is a way to refuse to accept that a left-liberal black man was elected President of the United States. Making Obama illegitimate in their minds allows them to avoid facing reality.

You can never kill a conspiracy theory. Facts and evidence that refute the theory are only proof of just how far the other side will go to conceal the real truth.

That is true, though some comspiracies do expire over time.

I am sure the Hitler and Elvis is alive conspiracies died out as the supposed age of these people passed the life expectancy. Hitler escaping and living in South America was a big deal up until the 70s. After that, life expectancy made the Hitler is still alive conspiracy fade away.

Paul of the Beatles is dead and replaced by a lookalike is another conspiracy that came and went.

But political conspiracies tend to linger and sometimes mutate into newer ones.

So I'm spending my afternoon reading LGF (of course!) and looking at wingnut blogs for hilarity and what do I see but a popup ad on some wingnut site saying "Get MUGGED by Ann Coulter"-- offering me a free copy of her new book MUGGED if only I'll agree to subscribe or whatever to the wingnut site.

How long did it take Ann to come up with that title? I'm guessing thirty seconds, and that it involves a lot of quacking about Obama and welfare and his socialist utopia.

Thanks but no thanks, I don't need to be MUGGED by Ann Coulter.

Not just that, it also in involves throwing red meat to racists. Coulter's game plan of making money by saying things in the most inflammatory manner possible automatically lowers the level of any discussion she involves herself in. Those seeking a right-of-center perspective on crime or urban issues are encouraged by Yours Truly to visit City Journal's website. Lots more useful facts, and a much smarter, less angry tone.

The unvarnished idiocy of the green agenda in a single picture

Together, the 48 contiguous states are comprised of 2,959,064 square miles (which excludes bodies of water).

There are 640 acres in a mile. There are about 4,840 square yards per acre.

To calculate the number of square yards in the United States, we multiply 640 * 4,840 * 2,959,064, which yields 9.17 trillion square yards in the United States.

There are also about 300 million citizens living in the United States. If you had everyone in the U.S. stand next to each other -- let's say they each have their own square yard to stand in -- how much of the contiguous land would be filled?

Answer: about 96 square miles or the size of Plymouth, Massachusetts.

(map of United States)
(map of Plymouth, Mass)

This estimate ignores, of course, the immense land mass known as Alaska as well as Hawaii. Humans would be even less consequential if we took those areas into account.

Each time you fly over the United States, remember how inconsequential humans really are.

Humans represent the metaphorical gnat on an elephant's posterior. And human activities have about as much to do with carbon dioxide, photosynthesis and the rest of the earth's organic processes as Al Gore had to do with the invention of the Internet. Which is to say: none.

Since his "argument" is based on the relationship of number of people to amount of land (i.e., population density), they would only make a difference if the rest of the planet were significantly more thickly settled than the U.S. is.

A painting done collectively by all four Beatles when the band was on tour in Japan in 1966, plus original artwork by rock legend Frank Zappa and contracts and a black leather jacket from the late rapper Biggie Smalls (aka “The Notorious B.I.G”) will headline a three-day auction extravaganza scheduled for Sept. 13-15 by Philip Weiss Auctions.

The auction will be held in Philip Weiss Auctions’ spacious gallery, located at #1 Neil Court in Oceanside, N.Y. The music memorabilia will be part of the event’s sandwich day – Friday, Sept. 14, starting at 2 p.m. (EST). The day will also feature ocean liner and transportation collectibles, and Hollywood memorabilia, to include magazine cover art from the '20s and ‘30s.

UVA Declines Obama Campaign Request

A University of Virginia spokeswoman says President Barack Obama will not be at the university when he comes to Charlottesville on Wednesday. In a statement released Friday, it was confirmed that the university declined the president's request to speak at UVA.

UVA says the Obama campaign requested the use of one of two outdoor venues - the Amphitheater or the Harrison-Small Library plaza. The university declined the request for a number of reasons including class cancellations, which UVA estimates could be more than 186 classes on the second day of school. The other main reason is they would have to take on the full cost of security, and because of university policy and their federal and state tax exempt status, they would have to offer the same opportunity to the other candidate so as not to show favor for either candidate.

...Meanwhile, Albemarle County Police Chief Steve Sellers says they know of a "proposed" location, but can't say where because of Secret Service restrictions. It could be the nTelos Wireless Pavilion.

nTelos Wireless Pavilion General Manager Kirby Hutto tells NBC29 they've been asked to save the date, but nothing's been confirmed. Regardless of where or when it is, the Obama campaign office says it's ready.

The Pavilion would be an excellent place. I was there last night. Lots of room in a historic area of Charlottesville.

Ah, okay. I didn't realize until last night that the wounded bystanders had been shot by the cop/cops. My dad and I were talking about it this morning and he made the remark that this should highlight for everyone the reason why more people don't need to be running around with concealed weapons, thinking that they are going to stop some shooter somewhere. If the trained professionals end up hitting bystanders, what makes these cowboys think that they are going to do any better?

The thought-experiment would almost be valid if every country in the world had a population density at or below the USA's. But, facts is facts.

The relevant measure is the world population density as a whole, not the densities of individual countries. That number (52 when you leave out Antarctica) is greater than the U.S. population density (34), but not enough to make a serious difference in the original "argument", which after all is that you could fit everybody in the U.S. into Plymouth, Massachusetts. It hardly makes a difference to instead assume a population that could fit into 1 and a half Plymouths.

The real problem with the argument lies elsewhere, as allegro has pointed out.

It sure seems that way (on twitter). I saw the surveillance video and the police were pretty close to the guy. If they can miss (and I wonder how many bullets were in the guy, did any pass through him and hit other people), what makes other people think they'd do better? Shooting at a range is completely different than the situation in New York (or Aurora for that matter). The people who go on and on about how someone with a gun in the theater (or school, etc.) could have taken out the shooter don't seem to be dealing in the real world.

It also illustrates why a CC permit needs to go hand in hand with a massive umbrella policy.

It took me a minute to get it (wondering what the heck umbrellas had to do with anything, lol). Yes, I agree.

I agree. After Aurora, I heard people saying "If only someone had a gun it could have been stopped." You're in a crowded and dark theater with gunfire. Heck we know what happened in Arizona when a CCW permit holder put one out. The guy nearly got shot himself.

One of the NYPD officers in Empire State Building shooting suing New York

...

Craig Matthews, 39, one of the two New York City Police
Department officers who shot and helped take down the shooter at the Empire State Building yesterday, is currently involved in a lawsuit against the NYPD.

The New York Post reported today that Bronx cop, Craig Matthews, a 14-year veteran with the force who was on an anti-terror patrol yesterday, filed that lawsuit against the NYPD in February. Matthews claimed in the suit that his First Amendment rights were violated when, after exposing the quota system, his superiors subjected him to “harassment and retaliation.”

Some? Yes. Others? Not so much. Still others? Don't really know what happens when they put their booger hook on the bang switch. Sometimes it is easy to think one in the first category is really in the last category by the way they act at the range. And then there are those that practice with ammo that is barely able to cycle their weapon but think they can go out with SuperDuper +P+ firebreathing JHPs...

I'd probably carry a gun in Oklahoma too:

A portable meth lab exploded in an Oklahoma man's pants Friday during a scuffle with a state trooper.

David Williams ran from a police officer who noticed a chemical smell as he was issuing a speeding ticket to the driver of the SUV that Williams was a passenger in, KOTV reported.

The officer caught up with Williams and in the ensuing struggle, an "active meth lab" he had been hiding in his pants burst, Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Shiloh Hall told the station.

Internet records list him as administrator of the website for a business called St. Jolly’s Art, which sold iron-on art for T-shirts, including stylized drawings of fighter planes, muscle cars and ships.

Johnson was also part of a community of bird watchers and photographers who document hawks and other wildlife living in Central Park, a few blocks from his home. In an email to another bird watcher, who works at The Associated Press, Johnson wrote tenderly about spending a winter night watching ducks in the park.

Cartoon from Nick Anderson

Yesterday, a nice Republican lady told me Judge Head should be thanked for saying "what many people in Lubbock County believe but don't have the guts to say."
We can't let the GOP get away with tossing Tom under the bus and pretending he is an isolated whack-job whose views do not reflect those of a sizable fraction of the local party. The infamous Lubbock GOP platform doesn't mention civil war or UN invaders but it is clearly influenced by the same conspiracist world view. The state platform specifically addresses "agenda 21" and other JBS conspiracy claims.
Judge Head seems surprised at the intensity of the response, as though he expected these ideas to be viewed as controversial but not as insane or bizarre. This would be understandable if he spends a lot of time in a bubble where these views in fact are the norm.

He was probably unaware that Oregon's laws would have allowed a rapist to sue for custody. This last week has brought it to all of our attention (honestly--did you know? I would never have dreamed that a rapist could sue for custody), and so now he's drafting legislation.

I think the legislature is out of session, though, so it will have to wait until February. Still, they can get started.

Anti-gay pastor Grant Storms convicted of masturbating in New Orleans park

An anti-gay pastor in New Orleans was convicted of masturbating in a public park last year, telling authorities in his confession that the sex act was a "thrill" and a "fantasy."

Grant Storms, who gained notoriety by leading a raucous march against homosexuals during New Orleans' annual gay-oriented Southern Decadence festival, was found guilty of obscenity on Wednesday for the Feb. 25, 2011, incident.

Storms was busted in Lafreniere Park in suburban Metairie after a nanny spotted him behind the wheel of his parked van with his penis out and a hat partially covering his face.

After he was arrested, the 55-year-old preacher admitted to cops that it was the third time that week he had pleasured himself in the park, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported...

Every police force in the country seems to think it needs military-grade weapons, vehicles, and SWAT tactics to serve traffic warrants, but doesn't train officers on how (and/or when) to use the shit without taking out half the people they're supposedly protecting. There are no shades of grey between a civilian police officer and a soldier; there is a huge thick black line, but the police seem to want all the military toys with very little of the requisite training, and none of the accountability for when playtime goes bad.

Doesn't that just make things worse? A left-liberal (well, sort of, in some lights, if you squint just right) black man from KENYA was elected president. How does this help?

There are no shades of grey between a civilian police officer and a soldier; there is a huge thick black line, but the police seem to want all the military toys with very little of the requisite training, and none of the accountability for when playtime goes bad.

President Bil Clinton thinned that black line with his "100,000 police officers" program. It was used to elevate the capabilities of PD's not just add police. The military spec ops guys started cross training with PD's. The country was gearing up for terror attacks and drug raids, needed or not. I remember articles at the time decrying the militarization of police capacities. Then we had the North Hollywood bank heist. Then 911. Then the Patriot act and Homeland security.

That (IMHO) is more how we got here than local PD"s motivating any of this. Agree? Disagree?

Pakistan investigating whether US drone strike killed top commander of Haqqani network

Two Pakistani intelligence officials said Saturday they are 90 percent certain Badruddin Haqqani was killed Tuesday in North Waziristan. They cite reports from their agents but say they haven’t spoken to anyone who has seen the body.

Key Taliban figure killed in airstrike

The strike in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province killed Mullah Dadullah, the self-proclaimed Taliban leader in Pakistan's Bajur tribal area that lies across the border, late on Friday afternoon, coalition spokesman Major Martyn Crighton said.

Dadullah reportedly took over after Bajur's former Pakistani Taliban leader, Maulvi Faqir Mohammed, fled to Afghanistan to avoid Pakistani army operations.

He was responsible for the movement of fighters and weapons, as well as attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, according to a coalition statement on Saturday.

It added that Dadullah's deputy, identified only as Shakir, was also killed in the strike along with 10 other militants, and that an assessment made in conjunction with Afghan security forces determined no civilians had been killed or injured.
