Maryland Republican Lawmaker Who Thinks Gays Are a Threat to Children Gets Drunk and Crashes His Boat Into Children

Politics • Views: 45,366

Don Dwyer, Maryland Republican politician and homophobe, drinks while out on the water then crashes his boat into a smaller boat full of kids.

I don’t think I need to add much analysis here, the hypocrisy is pretty obvious.

Dwyer, a Tea Party Republican, has in the past suggested that homosexuals were a threat to children and that same-sex marriage would lead to homosexuality being taught in schools.

Maryland delegate Don H. Dwyer Jr was drinking with another man on his boat on the Magothy River in Pasadena around 7pm when his boat struck a smaller vessel with five children on board.

Four of the children were injured with one, a five year old girl, taken by helicopter to Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

The smash was so severe that Dwyer’s boat sunk in the river.

Dwyer later admitted to having a blood alcohol level of 0.2 – twice the legal limit.

‘It is true that I was drinking while operating my boat,’ Dwyer told a press conference outside the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he is being treated.

‘No one, no one, should be drinking and operating a motor vehicle or powerboat.’

‘I deeply regret my actions, and I ask for forgiveness from the public. My heart and prayers go out to the family that was involved in the accident, and I pray for them to have a speedy recovery.’

Rep. Don Dwyer, R-Anne Arundel, looks on as he listens to fellow Delegates debate a gay marriage bill in Annapolis, Md. , Friday, Feb. 17, 2012. The House passed the bill, and it will go on to the state Senate next week.

Anne Arundel County Delegate Don Dwyer, in wheelchair, speaks at a news conference outside Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012. Dwyer acknowledged that he had been drinking alcohol before operating a motorboat that collided with another vessel, injuring himself and five others, and that his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.

How do you "teach homosexuality?" Like how my parents "taught" me heterosexuality? In other words, they didn't, I just one day thought the girls in school were really hot.

Sometimes fiction delivers great lines. In this case:

Mr. Dwyer, before I grant absolution I want to know your solution. WTF are you going to do:
a) to provide restitution;
b) to prevent recurrence;
c) in penitence.

So far, it's just words.

Good point! Of course, Ted Kennedy comes to mind. It's always good to remember that both Democrats and Republicans have their share of bad people, and that neither party seems especially bothered by this. I happen to agree with Senator Kennedy's politics, but I always felt a little queasy that Chappaquiddick has been all but forgotten... by almost everyone.

But the case of Don Dwyer is quite different. Don Dwyer has the arrogance to publicly criticize the behavior of all gay people. He has raised this criticism to such an emotional level (I would have to call it a hateful level) that he accuses gays of being an endangerment to CHILDREN. It is news, important news, that someone of such crummy character is a state representative in Maryland. If he continues to use hateful rhetoric against gays, especially if he continues to bring children into that rhetoric, that will be news too.

Yes. After having read "First Man" I would also add that admire his career in the US Navy and his Korean War experience. Then there was his work as a test pilot and especially that of the X-15 and the Gemini program.

People will say that he didn't like Obama's space policy but he's entitled to his opinion. I'm not exactly behind this policy either and think that it's too dragged out and take the old school approached of doing things faster.

The Economist nails it, Mitt stands for nothing:

Mr Romney may calculate that it is best to keep quiet: the faltering economy will drive voters towards him. It is more likely, however, that his evasiveness will erode his main competitive advantage. A businessman without a credible plan to fix a problem stops being a credible businessman. So does a businessman who tells you one thing at breakfast and the opposite at supper. Indeed, all this underlines the main doubt: nobody knows who this strange man really is. It is half a decade since he ran something. Why won’t he talk about his business career openly? Why has he been so reluctant to disclose his tax returns? How can a leader change tack so often? Where does he really want to take the world’s most powerful country?
