National Review’s Advice for RNC Watchers: Ignore the Fact-Checkers

Mobilizing against reality
Politics • Views: 43,941

At National Review Online, where they’ve had to fire or distance themselves from at least two self-avowed white nationalists so far this year, the editors are advising their conservative readers to pay no attention to fact-checkers while taking in the sights and sounds of the Republican National Convention.

Facts ruin the narrative, you see.

The website PolitiFact is going to be truth-squadding the Republican convention speakers this week, delivering verdicts on which claims are “mostly true” and which deserve a “pants on fire” rating. Our advice: Pay no attention to those ratings. PolitiFact can’t be trusted to get the story right.

The Republican backlash against facts is gathering steam.

Politifact is a bit of a joke. Their lie of the year for 2011 was given to an ad that said "Republicans want to change medicare was we know it"

thats actually true. Republicans do want to change medicare as we know it.

Atheist group removes billboards targeting presidential candidates' religious faith

An atheist group that raised a pair of billboards taking aim at the presidential candidates’ religion at the site of next month’s Democratic National Convention has pulled the signs after what the group called a “large volume of threats.”

The billboards, sponsored by American Atheists, took aim at Mormonism and Christianity and went up this month in Charlotte, North Carolina, which will play host to the Democratic convention.

[...]

American Atheists said the billboards provoked a “large volume of threats” by phone and e-mail and that the group reported the threats to police.

That was my thought as well. Even if you disagree with Politifact, you can review their work and decide for yourself where they went wrong. When your candidate's own campaign declares openly that it doesn't care if its lying, just that it's ads are having the desired effect, then fact-checking becomes like holy water to a vampire.

The Republican backlash against facts is gathering steam.

Mt mother tried to convince me that Obama had gone on an "apology tour" around the world to bow and scrape to world leaders and abase himself for the evil of America. Beck and a lot of the Faux News crowd talk about this as an accepted, uncontroversial fact.

Uh huh.

When I pointed out that the story had been repeatedly debunked in the reputable media and that there was simply no evidence in any source whatsoever that actually documented the "tour" when it happened, she assured me that she does not trust anything from the "liberal Mainstream media".

I cannot say how much I despise what Rupert Murdoch has done to this country with his yellow journalism enterprise.

It should not shock you to learn that both campaigns know they're lying in their campaign ads. It's not a secret. Just like Budwiser doesn't really think their product makes you more attractive to women. You aren't supposed to believe everything someone puts in an advertisement. The candidates don't believe their own campaign ads and neither should you. The fact checkers do a decent job and are a great resource for those who want to be well informed but they aren't an antidote to lies in political ads. Both campaigns have been skewered by the fact checkers but they carry on anyways.

Would that be the same William F Buckley who said:

The central question that emerges--and it is not a parliamentary question or a question that is answered by merely consulting a catalog of the rights of American citizens, born Equal--is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas in which it does not predominate numerically? The sobering answer is Yes--the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced ace. It is not easy, and it is unpleasant, to adduce statistics evidencing the median cultural superiority of White over Negro: but it is fact that obtrudes, one that cannot be hidden by ever-so-busy egalitarians and anthropologists. The question, as far as the White community is concerned, is whether the claims of civilization supersede those of universal suffrage........The great majorit of the Negroes of the South who do not vote do not care to vote, and would not know for what to vote if they could. Overwhelming numbers of White people in the South do not vote. Universal suffrage is not the beginning of wisdom or the beginning of freedom.

Well, but even then, Barton has obviously said far more than those four statements, and they're almost all outrageous or blatantly false. So I don't think that's a good explanation for why they have an overall positive group of ratings for David Barton. Quite the opposite; you have to sort through a lot of Barton's statements to find ones that are mostly true or even half true.

So no, I don't think you're right at all about that. Can you explain why, if they focus on the blatantly false and outrageous, they didn't do so with Barton?

New Intelligence Report Focuses on Possible Border Vigilante Killings

While the story is not conclusive, it cites internal law enforcement documents focusing on the murders of four people in two 2007 incidents near Eloy, Ariz., that say that “t appears that the same group of individuals is working in concert to intentionally kill IAs [illegal aliens].” The story also examines the remarkably similar murders of two people this April in the same remote area of the state.

“In Arizona, we might not have Hammerskins or Volksfront or the Klan,” one retired Arizona detective, referencing several well-known white supremacist groups, told the Report. “What we do have is a lot of angry, militant white men on the border sitting like hunters waiting for these people to come across.”

Even though he was happy with a similar federal response in '08 to Hurricane Gustav, but I'm sure the fact that Bush was in office had nothing to do with that.

Funny you mention that. The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition sound like they could be a Republican Creed:

1. Once you have their money, you never give it back.
2. The best deal is the one that brings the most profit.

3. Never pay more for an acquisition than you have to.
4. A woman wearing clothes is like a man in the kitchen.
5. If you can't break a contract, bend it.
6. Never allow family to stand in the way of opportunity.

7. Keep your ears open.
8. Small print leads to large risk.
9. Opportunity plus instinct equals profit.
10. Greed is eternal.
11. Latinum isn't the only thing that shines.
13. Anything worth doing is worth doing for money.
14. Anything stolen is pure profit.
15. Acting stupid is often smart.

16. A deal is a deal...until a better one comes along.
17. A contract is a contract is a contract...but only between Ferengi.
18. A Ferengi without profit is no Ferengi at all.
19. Satisfaction is not guaranteed.
20. When the customer is sweating, turn up the heat.
21. Never place friendship above profit.
22. A wise man can hear profit in the wind.
23. Nothing is more important than your health, except for your money.
24. Latinum can't buy happiness, but you can sure have a blast renting it.
25. You can't make a deal if your dead.
27. There's nothing more dangerous than an honest businessman.
31. Never insult a Ferengi's mother...insult something he cares about instead.
33. It never hurts to suck up to the boss.
34. War is good for business.

35. Peace is good for business.
40. She can touch your lobes, but never your latinum.
41. Profit is its own reward.
44. Never confuse wisdom with luck.
47. Never trust a man wearing a better suit than your own.
48. The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife.
52. Never ask when you can take.

Way to shore up that base, Mitt...we all knew he'd try to screw them as soon as he had the chance, and he probably figured doing so at the RNC would be too late for them to fuck up his day in the sun.

Omigod. I had no idea that William F. Buckley gave such a horrid, racist rant.

But I really can't excuse a statement such as what you quoted from WFB. Also, it reminds me what a terribly ugly thing racism is.

Because they are part of the lamestream librul media...oh, wait...

Every indication I saw was that the Paulians were looking to create a disruption on the floor anyway. Probably by having the delegates who they got elected either abstain from voting or even voting Paul so as to "make a point" that the party as a whole doesn't support Romney. There was no chance that they could get Paul nominated, as Romney commands enough loyal delegates, but having a sizable chunk of the delegates vote for somebody else would have been a hell of a black eye.

Rules are for people who don't run railroads, punk.

Lobbyist Parties at RNC Narrowly Skirt Ethics Rules

I spotted Representative John Mica, chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, holding court on the patio before the event began. His committee passed out a massive transportation bill this year that was repeatedly slammed as a massive giveaway to special interests. (“This is an earmark for a handful of wealthy people who own these companies. This is a windfall,” a transportation union official told the Huffington Post.) Among many heinous provisions, his committee’s version stripped rail-industry workers of federal minimum wage and overtime protections. Rail companies—the very ones sponsoring this party—often pay workers only the minimum wage, and many employees are forced to work long hours during long-distance hauls.

Senator Jim Inhofe, the ranking member and potential future chair of the Senate Public Works Committee and a key figure in getting that transportation bill through the Senate, was also there. I caught him coming out of the party after about ninety minutes inside, and he amiably said he had a “great” time. I asked who was throwing the party, and he responded “it’s a transportation thing. Transportation industry.” I asked if he spoke with any lobbyists, and Inhofe said “it’s funny, I don’t remember meeting many,” before his staff shooed me away. (And called me a “punk” for good measure).

Apparently there was a serious worry amongst the leadership that Paul might be able to stage a dark horse bid, that enough delegates would be elected by the Paulians to nominate him at the convention instead of Romney. That threat effectively ended in Nebraska, but there was still the worry that having all those Paulians openly refuse to vote for Romney would have caused a major ruckus at a time when the party's trying to invoke the image of unity against Obama.

Barton: God Will Come Out of Heaven to Oppose Our Unbiblical Economic System

David Barton has returned for another extended appearance on Kenneth Copeland's "Believers Voice of Victory" television program where he made the case that our economic system must be set up to correspond to "the way God says the government should do economics," which means that government needs to "reward those who make a profit."

But rather than doing that, Barton warned, our government is punishing those who have been successful and using their money to reward those who aren't productive or bail-out those who have run their business into the ground ... "and there's no way God is going to bless that ... because we're not following his laws."

But not only is God not going to bless our government, He is "actually going to come down and oppose" it, coming straight out of Heaven to say "what's going on down here? This isn't what I ordained":

Thousands of years of wars in his name, plagues, famine, a renaissance, a reformation, rival religions, secularism, atheism, God makes a grand total of zero appearances.

The US government changes economic policy and now God's coming to come down and set things straight?

What a fucking joke the GOP has become.

Women and Mormonism

Jessica Longaker
1995

"Many religions have recently begun changing in an attempt to equalize the roles and responsibilities of men and women. Mormonism is one of the exceptions. The Mormon position on women has changed little since the early 1800's, when the official view was that "woman's primary place is in the home, where she is to rear children and abide by the righteous counsel of her husband" (McConkie 844). This attitude, coupled with the doctrine of polygamy and the absolute power claimed by the men of the church, created a legacy of profound sexism which modern Mormonism has been unable to escape.

Mormonism has created an ingenious system of oppression, in which opposition towards men is tantamount to arguing with God. The Mormon religion makes no distinction between clergy and laity, at least with regard to men (Laake 9). All Mormon men are ordained as members of the "priesthood," with the absolute authority to preach the gospel, bestow blessings, prophecy, perform healings and baptisms, and generally speak for God. "Their priesthood gives them the right to advise and instruct the Saints (i.e., Mormons), and their jurisdiction extends over all things spiritual and temporal"

Court: GOP’s Texas Redistricting Plan Intentionally Discriminated Against Hispanics

A redistricting plan signed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) intentionally discriminated against Hispanic voters, a three-judge panel unanimously ruled Tuesday. The judges found that seats belonging to white incumbent members of Congress were protected under the plan while districts belonging to incumbent minorities were targeted for changes.

The court was “persuaded by the totality of the evidence that the plan was enacted with discriminatory intent,” according to the ruling. There was “sufficient evidence to conclude that the Congressional Plan was motivated, at least in part, by discriminatory intent,” the court found.

The three judges said they were overwhelmed with the amount of evidence showing the congressional redistricting plan was intentionally discriminatory, writing in a footnote that parties “have provided more evidence of discriminatory intent than we have space, or need, to address here.”

All three redistricting plans — for Texas’ congressional delegation, its state House of Representatives and the state Senate — were blocked by the federal court. The Supreme Court had earlier ruled that interim maps drawn by a federal court were invalid.

Arizona GOP Favorite Doesn’t Want Middle Easterners In U.S. ‘Legally Or Illegally’

In an interview with a conservative website earlier this year, Saucedo Mercer talked in depth about her views on immigration. A Mexican immigrant herself who became a U.S. citizen, she said the issue was important because people from places other than Mexico were among those coming across the border illegally.

“That includes Chinese, Middle Easterners,” she said. “If you know Middle Easterners, a lot of them, they look Mexican or they look, you know, like a lot of people in South America, dark skin, dark hair, brown eyes. And they mix. They mix in.

“And those people, their only goal in life is to, to cause harm to the United States. So why do we want them here, either legally or illegally? When they come across the border, besides the trash that they leave behind, the drug smuggling, the killings, the beheadings. I mean, you are seeing stuff. It’s a war out there.”

I just saw the following in a gaming blog, after the blogger received an invitation from Mitt Romney:

Dear Mitt Romney,

Thank you very much for your invitation. But besides the fact that I am European and thus not eligible to vote, I would also like to say that this is maybe a bit too early to already say Farewell to Victory. Hang in there, polls say you have a 50:50 chance of winning this. Being used to European standards of health care and egality, I would personally vote for your opponent. But I do think that you add a valid point about the size of government to this election, even if it is marred by the extreme one-sidedness of the proposed reductions and tax reliefs.

Regards,

Tobold

Herman Cain: ‘I’d probably be the nominee’

Herman Cain says if there had been a level playing field during the Republican primaries, he’d be receiving the GOP nomination in Tampa — and that he’s hired investigators to determine who spread stories that he says brought down his campaign.

“If everyone had competed fairly and honestly, I’d probably be the nominee being nominated this week,” the former GOP presidential candidate said on CBS Sunday. “The process is fair but many people that are involved in the process are not fair and they are not honest.

Contrary to many on this list: No.

She gets as much slack as Michelle Obama has received, which is to say none from the opposition party and its supporters. I personally will refrain from racist and sexist remarks but beyond that I believe the field should be level.
