2012 GOP Platform: The Tea Party’s Necronomicon

Brimming with crazy
Politics • Views: 29,609

The Republican Party’s 2012 platform is the most extreme right wing GOP platform in history. Name a radical far right position on almost any issue, and chances are good you’ll find it enshrined in this document — and that includes the “stealth shariah” hallucinations of the crazed anti-Muslim crowd. It’s striking how hard the authors of the platform seem to have worked to obscure the true intent of their policy positions.

It’s the Tea Party’s Necronomicon.

David Barton Went 70 for 71 in Shaping the GOP Platform

The extent to which just how thoroughly the Religious Right's agenda dominates the 2012 GOP platform was helpfully exposed last night when David Barton appeared on GBTV to brag that the platform is "the most conservative in my lifetime," revealing that he personally "made 71 motions to add to this platform and 70 of them got passed":

IA IA! BARTON FHTAGN!

I'm not encouraged that they believe in America, since they also believe that the Earth is 6000 years old, humans and apes are unrelated, climate scientists are socialist shills, prayer stops terrorist bombings, and Jesus opposed the minimum wage.

Their America is a nightmare land out of some dystopian alternate-world novel.

According to its platform, the Republican Party wants to reinstate Don't Ask Don't Tell, prevent same-sex marriages from being recognized by the federal government, and stop efforts to prevent gays and lesbians from being persecuted in Africa.

Can't imagine why a LGBT person, or those of us who support LGBT persons, would have anything to do with this party.

Subjecting American citizens to foreign laws isinimical to the spirit of the Constitution. It is one rea-son we oppose U.S. participation in the InternationalCriminal Court. There must be no use of foreign law by U.S. courts in interpreting our Constitution andlaws. Nor should foreign sources of law be used inState courts’ adjudication of criminal or civil matters

I think it's couched in some language about 'religious law' not serving as guidance or interpretation for American jurisprudence. It's obviously about Sharia, though.

One of the most disturbing phenomena of this age is the extent to which utterly atavistic and barbarous superstitions, like young Earth creationism, can exist and flourish among people whose lifestyle, and lives themselves, are completely dependent on modern devices and discoveries.
These people take their over-powered SUVs and hyper-electrified suburban homes for granted, yet they have no use for, of knowledge of, the scientific enterprise. It is possible that they literally see these devices as magical, handed down by a higher power, and therefore not to be questioned or understood by mere humans.

9) Reconsider the gold standard. “Determined to crush the double-digit inflation that was part of the Carter Administration’s economic legacy, President Reagan, shortly after his inauguration, established a commission to consider the feasibility of a metallic basis for U.S. currency. The commission advised against such a move. Now, three decades later, as we face the task of cleaning up the wreckage of the current Administration’s policies, we propose a similar commission to investigate possible ways to set a fixed value for the dollar.”

These nutbags are determined to find some way to crash the economy again.

A couple of the oddest parts in the WaPo item aren't so strange. The plank to protect the Electoral college goes back to some politicians (on both sides of the aisle) looking to abolish the EC and using direct election by popular vote.

That would have had the effect of giving Gore the win in 2000 over Bush. But it wouldn't have overturned the results of other elections going back to Harrison and Hayes. Full breakdown here.

The DC was not meant to be a state as it was carved out from VA and MD. That was the Founding intention, so there's a legitimate historical reason to not grant it statehood. Should that change now? Should they have a vote and say in national politics - with 2 Senators and a member of the House? The GOP would never want to shift the balance of power when those Congressmen would likely be Democrats - giving Democrats a better chance of controlling the Senate. Odd that they'd give Puerto Rico statehood though, for similar reasons since Puerto Rico would like vote Democratic and bring 2 Senators and 5 Reps.

The Gold standard is straight from the Ron Paul/Glenn Beck insanity wing.

Interesting that the first part of the energy policy goes to coal, which is a sop to the coal producing states that are seeing losses due to fracking and natural gas prices being low at present.

Then there's a bit of cognitive dissonance on environmental policy:

The environment is getting cleaner and health-ier. The nation’s air and waterways, as a whole, aremuch healthier than they were just a few decades ago. Efforts to reduce pollution, encourage re-cycling, educate the public, and avoid ecological degradation have been a success. To ensure their continued support by the American people, however, we need a dramatic change in theattitude of officials in Washington, a shift from a job-killing punitive mentality to a spirit of cooperation with producers, landowners, and the public. An important factor is full trans-parency in development of the data and modeling that drive regulations. Legislation to restore the authority of States in environmental protection is essential. We encourage the use of agricultural best management practices among the States to reduce pollution

On the one hand, they're touting the benefits of environmental regulation, but then they call for gutting it - particularly by giving regulatory authority to states that have shown an unwillingness to do what needs to be done to clean up problems in their states.

Ah, I guess the nutbars on the committee had a sense of humor:

We encourage the cost-effective development of renewable energy, but the taxpayers should not serve as venture capitalists for risky endeavors. It is important to create a pathway toward a market-based approach for renewable energy sources and to aggressively develop alternative sources for electricity generation such as wind, hydro, solar, biomass, geothermal, and tidal energy. Partnerships between traditional energy industries and emerging renewable industries can be a central component in meeting the nation’s long-term needs. Alternative forms of energy are part of our action agenda to power the homes and workplaces of the nation.

Ah thanks. Found it now.

Which is really odd, as Shariah law would not be considered "foreign" law. The laws of Saudi Arabia which are based on Shariah concepts would of course be "foreign" law. What is more interesting is that they meant to call Shariah law foreign, which to be constitutional would likely imply that all religious codes of law are foreign. I am not sure these folks intended to exclude the influence of the Judeo Christian tradition, but for this to apply to Shariah it would have to apply to the Ten Commandments too.

They like sending stuff to the state level since it is much easier to buy influence there. Plus it is also easier to get a state to dump its environmental issues on another state by building a taller stack, a longer pipe, or having that outlet right before the river crosses the state line. Then the whole legal wrangles get nastier since you can fight over venues, judges, etc. etc. And then it gets appealed to a Federal court anyways...

A Sacred Contract: Defense of Marriage

That is why Congressional Republicans took the lead in enacting the Defense of Marriage Act, affirming the right of States and the federal government not to recognize same-sex relationships licensed in other
jurisdictions. The current Administration’s open defiance of this constitutional principle—in its handling of immigration cases, in federal personnel benefits, in allowing a same-sex marriage at a military base,
and in refusing to defend DOMA in the courts— makes a mockery of the President’s inaugural oath.

Translation: We support State's rights as long as they agree with us. If they don't, the Federal government needs to crack down and force them to comply

Responding to a caller who warned that FEMA was preparing the nefarious plot, Wilson said that he heard “you can literally go right there and see them.”

“I’ve seen pictures of what have been reported to be these FEMA camps,” Wilson claimed, “one of the most disturbing aspects about it to me is the plastic, almost-rubber made type containers stacked up by the thousands that they say are for mass graves for burying four bodies at a time.”

He said “I couldn’t tell you if indeed it is true” but “if there was a shadow federal government that was going to do something like that, FEMA would be the federal agency they would probably do it through.” Wilson concluded by calling on people to join Oath Keepers, the extremist group he belongs to that also promotes the concentration camp conspiracy theory.

The Democrats have, they even passed legislation, you might remember Dodd-Frank. The Republican response since 2010 has been to stall implementation of it while biding their time in the hopes that 2013 would bring in a GOP presidency that would finally allow them to repeal it in toto.

Speaking tonight at the RNC: Mike Huckabee

Now here is a fun little fact about Mike.

Mike Huckabee Pushed for Parole of Rapist Who Then Killed Two Women

It’s incredible to think that any politician, particularly a member of the tough-on-crime GOP, could survive it, let alone come to be seen by many as the conscience of the party. Remember this when you watch him address the cheering RNC crowd tonight.

Despite Dumond’s previous run-ins with the law – he was charged with bludgeoning a man to death but the charge was dropped, he was questioned on suspicion of rape and assault, and he pled guilty to assault in a separate case – and the testimony of two women who said they had been raped by him, Huckabee pushed ahead. He even considered outright clemency but pulled back in the face of public opposition. He instead worked behind the scenes to pressure the parole board to release Dumond.

I’ve pulled key headlines and excerpts from five years’ of coverage by the AP and organized them here in chronological order. I’m not sure how anyone could read through the clips and not come away questioning Huckabee’s judgment and character:

True. And it's because a bunch of people stupidly cling to the delusion that it's only a fringe element of the GOP that's crazy, or that other people are voting for the nutjobs, but they're voting for the "reasonable" choice.

Bottom line-- if you disagree with ANY of what's in this platform and you think it goes too far or that it's Wingnut Central, and you still keep voting for people with an (R) after their name, you're a big part of the problem. STOP VOTING FOR THESE PEOPLE. Stop putting your party over your country. Just stop.

It took the Democrats a national humiliation in 1984 to finally jettison the crazies on the far left and become a more pragmatic party. The GOP needs a similar electoral enema to finally get the nutjobs out.

I'd like to see someone talk about seriously tackling the issues that caused the financial crisis but nobody seems interested in that anymore.

There's some response to those issues, but they miss the mark badly. Wells Fargo Fires Iowa Worker for Minor 1963 Crime Excerpt:

Richard Eggers, 68, was fired in July from his job as a customer service representative for putting a cardboard cutout of a dime in a washing machine nearly 50 years ago in Carlisle, the Des Moines Register reported Monday.

Warren County court records show Eggers was convicted of operating a coin-changing machine by false means. Eggers called it a "stupid stunt," but questions his firing.

Big banks have been firing low-level employees like Eggers since new federal banking employment guidelines were enacted in May 2011 and new mortgage employment guidelines took hold in February, the newspaper said. The tougher standards are meant to clear out executives and mid-level bank employees guilty of transactional crimes — such as identity theft and money laundering — but are being applied across the board because of possible fines for noncompliance.

GOP Platform Lies About Abstinence Education’s Effectiveness

We renew our call for replacing “family planning” programs for teens with abstinence education which teaches abstinence until marriage as the responsible and respected standard of behavior. Abstinence from sexual activity is the only protection that is 100 percent effective against out-of-wedlock pregnancies and sexually-transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS when transmitted sexually. It is effective, science-based, and empowers teens to achieve optimal health outcomes and avoid risks of sexual activity. We oppose school-based clinics that provide referrals, counseling, and related services for abortion and contraception.

IMO the most beautiful coin in existence today is the American Platinum Eagle. the die is utterly flawless, the design inspired elegance. I photographed one that was a little roughly handled. The background was flat not shiny by design, letting the rest really shine.

A woman’s life is a human life: a theological error in the GOP platform?

“God created human beings in God’s image…male and female God created them.” (Genesis: 1:27) According to the Bible, women are created fully equal in the divine image and thus fully, and equally, human.

You’d never know that from reading the Republican platform, especially in regard to the anti-abortion language that asserts the “sanctity and dignity of human life.” That section affirms that the “unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed” and calls for a “human life amendment to the Constitution.”

Astonishingly, there is no mention of an exception on abortion in the cases of rape or incest; no mention even of such an exception to save the life of the mother. No qualification at all when it comes to even the life of a woman being protected.

Aren’t women’s lives included in the category of “the sanctity and dignity of human life?”

The document also calls for “legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children.” The Fourteenth Amendment contains the “equal protection clause,” except that when it comes to women’s lives, apparently, women are not equally protected. They are not even mentioned. The sole emphasis in the document as published is on what is called “the unborn.” That is, fetuses.

Why doesn’t the GOP consider women as equal, or even worth mentioning, when it comes to preserving their lives? Aren’t women’s lives “human lives”? The omission of women’s humanity and its protection from the GOP platform is a serious theological error.

Some in the party may indeed consider women human, but they are clearly not the people crafting policy.

Things That Shouldn't Be Said In Modern Society To Be Said At Least 1,400 Times At RNC

Throughout the three-day event, as the GOP unveils its 2012 platform and formally nominates its presidential ticket, experts predict words and phrases pertaining to science, health, and justice that are entirely unbefitting 21st-century human civilization will, on average, be voiced every 40 seconds from the podium at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

According to alarming projections, the number of jarringly anachronistic remarks about gender alone will easily number in the hundreds.

“As the convention kicks off Tuesday with speeches from the likes of Rick Santorum and Nikki Haley, we should prepare ourselves to hear a more-or-less unending stream of ideas that should never even enter one’s mind, let alone be verbalized, in this day and age,” said Elizabeth Unger, a political scientist at Georgetown University. “It’s difficult to comprehend, but dozens of comments on such topics as human relationships and the physical world itself—which will seem as if they were crafted by some primitive unthinking civilization that existed centuries ago—will actually be emphasized, repeated, and used to punctuate key points in every single speech.”

“And what’s more baffling is that speakers will receive legitimate applause for saying things in public that no reasonable, informed member of society would ever willingly say in private,” she continued. “In fact, the more monstrous and archaic the thing sounds, the more ardent the ovation will be.”

The ones which say "Who's Neil Armstrong?" are worse.

I guess they could be topped by "Whose Neil Armstrong?" which would indict both our history AND our English teachers.

No, Bigsby was a (blind) black white supremacist, though I would not be surprised if there weren't a couple of those for real at the convention.

Sometimes I feel that the level of ignorance in the US represents actual hostility towards the educational system. Not just failure to pay attention in class, but a determined effort not to learn anything, just because the student is hostile about being there.

learning things requires one to have the humility to admit they don't know everything and they need to learn. In a country in which one party says that learning is elitist and that you know enough just because and are great because of it, there's no humility to be found and no desire to learn.

Is it just me or does Ann Romney make her husband sound more unlikable? "Get over your biases." Sorry ma'am, I've seen your party in action and if you want to just say I'm being biased then you and your husband don't deserve mine or anyone's vote if you think that "bias" is the only reason why people don't like your husband and his party.

I'm pretty biased against guys who enriched themselves by taking jobs away from middle class Americans. Shame on me, i suppose.

We had a political party go similarly bat-shit here in England in the 1980s - it was our Labour party, to the left. Their manifesto (the British equivalent of a platform) was described - by one of their own MPs -as "the longest suicide note in history".

I think this one is longer.

The original version is here: [Link: www.labour-party.org.uk...]

If Obama wants to win the election, all he needs to do is buy 150 million copies of the platform and have one delivered to every household in the United States.
