RNC Open Thread Three, With Schedule

Night of the Paulians
Politics • Views: 32,122

There’s a good chance Ron Paul’s followers will do something crazy tonight, and an even better chance that Rand Paul will say something crazy. Also on the bill: anti-choice fanatic Mike Huckabee followed by pro-choice “moderate Republican” Condoleezza Rice. So that should be good for a little cognitive whiplash.

Here’s the schedule of right wing festivities for the evening:

7 p.m.:

  • Call to order
  • Introduction of Colors by Amputee Veterans of America Support Team
  • Pledge of Allegiance by Brig. Gen. Patrick E. Rea, U.S. Army (Ret.)
  • National Anthem sung by Ayla Brown
  • Invocation by Ishwar Singh
  • Ron Paul video
  • Remarks by Senate Republican leader and Convention Temporary Chairman Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
  • Remarks by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.
  • Remarks by Christopher Devlin-Young and Jeanine McDonnell

8 p.m.:

  • Remarks by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
  • Remarks by Attorney General Pam Bondi, R-Fla., Attorney General Sam Olens, R-Ga.
  • Remarks by Sen. John Thune, R-S.D.
  • Remarks by Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio

9 p.m.:

  • Remarks by Gov. Luis Fortuo, R-Puerto Rico
  • Remarks by former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, R-Minn.
  • Bush 41, 43 film
  • Remarks by former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark.

10 p.m.:

  • Remarks by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
  • Remarks by Gov. Susana Martinez, R-N.M.
  • Remarks by vice presidential nominee, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis.
  • Benediction by Archbishop Demetrios
  • Adjournment

I remember watching McCain's speech in 2008. "Fight with me! Fight with me!" I turned to my cousin and said "Obama wins by seven points." Turns out I missed my calling as an oddsmaker.

As Hurricane Isaac Targets New Orleans, GOP Rep. Calls For Making Disaster Relief Contingent On Budget Cuts

Labrador said that Congress must “readjust everything we do” in order to find cuts to pay for Hurricane Isaac disaster relief. “If there’s emergencies, we don’t always need to keep borrowing money,” said the freshman Republican.

KEYES: Last year, for instance, after the Missouri tornado, Leader Cantor was a real “hold-the-line” to call for budget cuts to pay for disaster relief. Do you think that’s still the right strategy going forward if there’s damage from Hurricane Isaac?

LABRADOR: I think government should do what every family does. If you have an emergency, then you rethink your priorities and you still invest and you still do the things that you need to do to take care of your family. That’s what government should do is always reconsider. If there’s emergencies, we don’t always need to keep borrowing money, but we can actually take care of people that are in damaged communities by reconfiguring what we’re doing in Washington D.C.

KEYES: So find cuts to pay for those disaster funds?

LABRADOR: Find different ways to do it, absolutely. We have to readjust everything we do.

It's a psychological thing. I can't remember the exact term but the basic concept is that when things are bad, people will generally gravitate to someone who promises to make things better and seemingly has the resources/ability to pull it off, regardless of what the truth may be.

Also, I would argue the GOP HAVE done a very good job in at least one area: Scapegoating Obama. They have managed to convince a whole ton of people that Barack Obama is SOLELY TO BLAME for the entire economic situation in America, despite the fact that most of the major catalysts to the crisis happened well BEFORE he became President.

The thing is, people like someone to blame. They feel better when they can pawn their problems off on someone else, rather than accepting responsibility for their own actions.

Obviously that doesn't apply to everyone, but it does apply to a lot of people.

Prosecutors Link Money From China to Iran

As part of their broader investigations, prosecutors are examining whether any money transfers originated from Chinese banks and moved through the British banks before being routed through their American branches.

HSBC and Standard Chartered have extensive branches and business throughout Asia. Prosecutors hope that the banks’ executives, as part of settlements, will shed more light on Chinese banks’ independent relationships with Iran.

Sounds more like a cartel hit than anything else. From your link:

Witnesses said the CIA driver made impressive evasive maneuvers which likely saved the lives of those inside the car, and they believe they heard hundreds of bullets fired, estimating the incident lasted around six minutes.

The Mexican official said the vehicle was chased for about 4 km (2.5 miles) before it was halted, and that shell casings from AK-47s, which are not used by Mexican police and are a weapon of choice for drug cartel members, were found at the scene.

The police and military in Mexico have long since been infiltrated by the cartels and you're surprised by this? Why?

What I've noticed recently about our political tribalism is that much of it is based on not understanding. There's an intentional ignorance required for acceptance by the tribe. How much of it is actually believed is a difficult question but I'm leaning towards the concept that people see the intentional ignorance as a tool to demonize their opponents as well as a method to identify friends. It's a bonding experience. I don't think most people actually really believe the crap that's being spread these days but a lot of people have fun with it and see it as politically useful.

Seriously, though, this is a position completely inconsistent with the modern conception of democracy in the West. How do these clowns expect to sell this to the voters, most of whom like their right to, you know, actually cast a ballot? Hoekstra is in a virtual dead heat, and the only reason Akin's not winning is his caveman remarks about rape. If the Dems can't use their opponent's effective support of disenfranchisement as a decisive issue, there's something wrong with their campaigns. This should be like hammering a pinata.

Speaking of facts and bullshit: WaPo's fact checkers took an interesting twist in the Mitt-Tax thing. Instead of fact checking the claim they decided to fact check Mitt's response.
Did Romney avoid taxes with Swiss bank accounts and Cayman investments?

These conflicting statements alone suggest an attempt to shade the facts and mislead voters, even if we don’t have definitive proof that Romney avoided taxes on his IRA. As readers know, we have a “reasonable person” standard when confronted with such uncertainties. The GOP presidential nominee thus earns one Pinocchio for his comments on Fox News — but it could go higher or lower if more information emerges.

Of course, Romney could clear up any confusion and end all speculation about this issue if he released more of his tax returns.

One Pinocchio.

For example, a flag retirement ceremony:

Image: flag-burn-cd-01.jpg

Would you have to examine the mental state of each person retiring a flag in such a manner? How do you know the motives of someone retiring a flag?

Also, what's a flag? Can you make one star green instead of white and then desecrate it? What about flag bumper stickers on cars, if the car gets into a wreck? Or someone with a flag on the back of his speedo?

If we had a flag-desecration amendment, 90% of all court cases would be about it! The country would grind to a halt. Think of all the flag police we'd have to hire!

Unfortunately it plays. In one of my political discussions with the one contractor at work the lines of defense are "Obama hasn't gotten anything done as President"; countered by bringing up GOP obstructionism and the McConnell quote. Next line of defense is "Both sides are doing that."

And that's preferable to listening to her rail about how much better right-to-work Texas is over Missouri and its unions that make no one want to invest or start up a company or factory there. Or veering over into immigration and how are "born here, therefore citizen" rule is so screwed up. I do think she is tap dancing on the edge of the "fear of brown people" thing, but has enough social tact not to go there.

She is a font of talking points, and it appears to be media inspired. I also think she keeps bringing up the subjects due to wanting the opinions confirmed - and possibly being uncomfortable about them. I also haven't asked her yet about candidate Akin's comments yet.

More WSJ News:

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will deliver the invocation. And Grant Bennett, a longtime friend who has served in Mormon leadership roles with Mr. Romney, will speak to the Republican convention here.

The Mormon church counts more than six million U.S. members. But many say they still face a lack of understanding about their Christian faith. During most of his campaign, Mr. Romney hasn't been inclined to offer much insight.

But both Mr. Romney and his wife, Ann, recently have begun to share a little more about their religious life, even allowing a small group of reporters to attend church with them earlier this month. Mr. Robinson supports the move, saying that understanding the Romneys' faith is central to understanding them.

I've wondered if the recent deluge of the "I'm a Mormon" ads on YouTube were designed to make Americans feel more comfortable with Mitt Romney. The timing was certainly fortuitous.

BIC For Her Amber Medium Ballpoint Pen

Reviews are hilarious:

I bought this pen (in error, evidently) to write my reports of each day's tree felling activities in my job as a lumberjack. It is no good. It slips from between my calloused, gnarly fingers like a gossamer thread gently descending to earth between two giant redwood trunks

At first blush, this pen appears to offer a cost effective solution to the problem of matching one's stationery to the study's decor, as we all know it can be costly to replace the scatter cushions and drapes every time a new colour of pen is brought to the table.
However, the gender-specific design of the pen meant that my manservant severely lacerated his ungainly masculine hand when attempting to take dictation, thus resulting in my having to replace all the male domestic staff.
It is this unexpected, hidden, astronomical cost, which forces me to give the BIC For Her Amber medium ballpoint pen a disappointing one-star rating. Hopefully the For Her *Crystal* medium ballpoint will better suit.

And no, there is nothing Romney can do about this because the good ones are made in Switzerland and Germany, nations btw with well paid technicians who have health care ensured (through different means) for them and where these speciality machining companies thrive not because they desire the quick buck but because they don't want to have the cheapest, just quality.

I think Romney is attempting one more iteration of that game. He in full pander mode to them, but I think he would try to go simple "pro business" mode if elected. And, to a degree, I think the religious nuts would let that go and simply settle for him not blocking the social legislation that they are pretty sure they can get Congress to start passing.

Birther hysteria being a prime example. Many of the birthers don't really believe Obama was born in Kenya or Indonesia. But proclaiming that they do creates a bond, as you suggest, with likeminded people. It's a way of protesting Obama's presidency and, of course, calling him a ni%$er without using the actual words.

Birtherism is a good example but I no longer believe it's rooted in racism. There's plenty of good examples of right wing racism but overblown accusations of racism have become lefty tribalist intensifiers. I'm no longer on board.

Zachary Roth: The top five nastiest things Mike Huckabee has said about Mitt Romney

5) On Romney's Mr. Burns image: “People are looking for a presidential candidate who reminds them of the guy they work with rather than the guy who laid them off.”

4) On Romney's propensity to change his positions: “And we thought nobody could fill John Kerry’s flip-flops.”

3) On Romney saying he was a lifeling hunter before being found not to have a hunting license: "It would be like me saying I've been a lifelong golfer because I played putt-putt when I was 9 years old and I rode in a golf cart a couple of times."

2) On Romney's religion: "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

1) On why none of that matters and he's backing Romney anyway: “The sicker the patient, the less important is bedside manner. If you’ve just been diagnosed with a brain tumor, you honestly don’t care if your neurosurgeon is a jerk."

Huckabee Blocked Abortion Funding for 15-Year-Old Girl Raped by Stepfather

In August of 1996, not even a month into his governorship, he went to the mat to deny funding – $430 to be precise – for an abortion provided to a “15-year-old mentally retarded girl impregnated by her stepfather”:

In defiance of an order from a federal judge, Gov. Mike Huckabee on Friday refused to allow Medicaid to pay for the abortion of a 15-year-old girl whose stepfather has been charged with incest.

While federal law requires Medicaid to fund abortions for poor women in cases of rape or incest, Huckabee said through a spokesman his first obligation is to the Arkansas Constitution, which forbids public funds to be used for abortion except when the mother's life is in danger.

While Huckabee claimed his first obligation was to the Arkansas Constitution, he was either willfully ignoring, or unfamiliar with, the basics of federalism. Either way, his first obligation clearly was not to the U.S. Constitution or the 15-year-old girl, who thankfully underwent the procedure in advance of the standoff. Nor was it to the people of his state. As the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported, the standoff “appeared to put the entire state Medicaid program in jeopardy.”

This evil fuck should be booed anytime he steps outside.

So what is the belief that the first black president of the US wasn't born in the US, but instead in Kenya-- a belief completely lacking in any logic or evidence-- based in?

If not Obama's 'other' status as having a black African father, what do you think sources birtherism, and why has it been aimed at Obama and not other Democrats?

If there's no racism/xenophobia involved, how would you explain the fact that none of our previous presidents were hounded by questions about their birth certificates?

It's just coincidence that Obama is the first one to have to deal with such nonsense? Pretty doubtful. Call it racism, call it xenophobia, whatever...but don't pretend this would be happening to a white guy named John Smith (or Mitt Romney, as he proudly pointed out a few days back).
