Mitt walks through shaking everybody's hands. The only black person I see is the Secret Service agent walking behind him.

Wondering how many times Mitt will have to say "God" to get the approval of the religious right.

First he has to say "America" as many times as that gospel "singer" and choir.

Which means he's got about 2,000 "America's" to get through in the next 5 minutes.

re: #108 Charles Johnson

I predict that the mainstream media will absolutely love this speech.

Goes without saying. The "liberal" NPR news shows "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered" have become almost unlistenable lately, because for some reason it's All Republicans All The Fucking Time now. I mean, every other morning some "Tea Party Favorite" who accidentally became mayor of Netherpoostink, PA (pop. 234) due to a clerical error somehow merits a 15 minute segment on his opinion about "Paul Romney, or Mitt Ryan, or whatever that guy's name is."

Maybe it's just me.

The church pension fund bit was fun and funny.

The ding on the Obama campaign with Staples was also nice.

He followed that up by bringing up Bright Horizons and being positive towards Michelle Obama.

And by referring to Steel Dynamic a company whose success is owed in part to government subsidies and ta breaks.

If you watch "American Psycho" along with the Chris Nolan/Christian Bale Batman films, consider this:

Patrick Bateman and Bruce Wayne are actually the same guy.

But one of them exists only in the mind of the other, just like Jack and Tyler in "Fight Club".

First, let's assume Patrick Bateman is real. The events of "American Psycho" probably took place only in Patrick Bateman's mind. If you imagine that the entire Batman universe is also a fantasy of Patrick Bateman's, an entirely new range of possible interpretations appears.

Now, assume Bruce Wayne is real. Consider his chosen life. He's a multi-billionaire by inheritance. The corporation that bears his name and supplies his for-all-practical-purposes limitless income is run by responsible people who knew his father. He has no real responsibilities in life. What he does have is unimaginable loads of anger and guilt. He could have anything. He really COULD live the life of a drunken, Russian model-screwing, spontaneously hotel-buying prima donna, but the only thing he's really driven to do is to break the bones of those he considers deserving of it. He is motivated purely by rage which he rationalizes as a longing for justice. He is literally a terrorist, but his targets are generally criminals. Clearly, this is a deeply disturbed and irrational person. If you consider that "American Psycho" is simply something Bruce Wayne dreamed one night, and couple that with the fact that he fakes having a "perfect" life of billionaire debauchery -- that he has no interest at all in those pleasures -- as a cover for acting out his nocturnal psychopathy, then the Batman films become more interesting.

OH, NEVER MIND. The Willard Mechanism bored the shit out of me and I sorta just got to typin'.

re: #370 What Would Spalding Gray Do?

As a life long comic book aficionado and connoisseur Batman and Bruce Wayne were born at at time when America was really fucked up.

In the Great Depression there was no first responders or 911 and there were fewer cops around. Lots of criminals and gangs on every street corner - really rough slum conditions in cities and politicians and cops all corrupt and on the take.

So as a reader from the 30s you can see why someone like Bruce Wayne would adopt a masked crime fighting persona.

After WW2 we had low crime so Batman became camp. Then became grim and gritty again when we went through the 70s and 80s crime waves.

But with NYC crime rates at an all time low I don't think in the modern era someone would invent a Batman and make him sane.

That's a pretty lame Eastwood imitation. Hell, I've done better.

re: #489 freetoken

Look at what Eastwood criticized:

War in Afghanistan
Gitmo

This was a bone to the Paulians... or, Eastwood really was punking the convention.

Clint Eastwood mentioned the troops and their overseas duty more so than Romney did who avoided the subject other than to threaten war on Iran and Russia and maybe China.

I don't mean to sound crass but is there any chance that Eastwood's growing senile in his advancing age? I mean he makes that one ad that we saw during the Super Bowl that praised the recovery of the auto industry but here he is supporting a candidate who wrote a large op-ed suggesting that Detroit should be let to fail. Plus as already said, he's apparently pretty liberal on the same social issues that Romney has moved to the far right on. Don't know what they were thinking when they asked him to give a surprise speech at the RNC but I guarantee that it's not turning the way any of them wanted it to be.
