People were thinking, What could be more pathetic than this? And then Marco Rubio introduced Mitt Romney.
6 | moderatelyradicalliberal Thu, Aug 30, 2012 9:21:24pm |
Seriously, did anybody see that chair bit before it aired? Or do Republicans really think Cling is Dirty Harry and they were afraid to say anything?
7 | Targetpractice Thu, Aug 30, 2012 9:21:25pm |
Think it says something for a candidate when the best they can hope for is that nobody was paying attention to their speech because they were too busy wondering who let the crazy man on stage.
9 | jaunte Thu, Aug 30, 2012 9:22:08pm |

People are now talking about Clint Eastwood.

Think 2 & 3 really go back to 1, namely "Who the fuck approved this improv bit?" If it was somebody on Mitt's staff, then they should be receiving a pink slip tomorrow. If nobody, then that really does bring into question just what sort of a chickenshit outfit is Romney running?

One the one hand I'm like fuck him, he deserves to be remembered as an old fool for agreeing to speak at the convention. On the other it's pretty fucking sad and embarrassing to see someone make such a pathetic spectacle of themselves, especially when it's an American icon. It's infuriating to see a political party use someone and put them on display when they're so far out of their depth.
Just depressing.

Any real possibility that person could have been Mitt himself? Part of me wonders if he was thinking "Gee, a chance to meet Clint Eastwood and he supports me for president, let's give the old guy a chance to speak on my behalf." I actually feel kind of bad for Clint because he really embarrassed himself up there.

Initial impression from one of the TPM editors, the last two paragraphs the most telling:
But on balance, I thought it was fairly weak as a speech. He’s the underdog and he’s the guy who needs to have a galvanizing introduction to the general public. In those terms, it was a missed opportunity. A pretty big one.
Just after the speech, on CNN, they asked Alex Castellanos what he thought of the speech. Alex’s response: “Good enough.” Yeah, pretty apt response.

Mitt Romney said Barack Obama began his presidency with an apology tour
"While Obama's speeches contained some criticisms of past U.S. actions, he typically combined those passages with praise for the United States and its ideals, and he frequently mentioned how other countries had erred as well. We found not a single, full-throated apology in the bunch.
Calling those remarks "an apology tour" is a ridiculous charge. So we rate his statement Pants on Fire."

Nah, it's all part of the same victim blaming that women deal with when it comes to rape. The typical line of bullshit is that men are hardwired for sex anytime, anywhere, with any woman they can get it from and they have no control over their impulses, so what a woman wears, says, and drinks makes a difference. He's just a mindless brute, so how the hell is he supposed to know she meant no? It's the usual excuse for claiming that date rape doesn't exist.

I like patriotism. Parades, the military, air shows, the smell of jet fuel and the sound of afterburners. I even like to listen to patriotic music. When I play Columbia here it's not just for shits and giggles. I really like it. There's a sense of pride in being an American. But I just don't like the idea of basing my pride on thinking that I'm better than everyone. It's just empty nationalism. People in other countries will do the same thing. On it goes.

von Braun was a pragmatic guy, like a lot of the scientists who didn't flee Germany were during the war. He had peaceful intentions and saw in his work the chance to take man to great heights. Problem was, purely peaceful research was useless to the Reich war machine and there was no money or fame to be made in it. So you sold your work to them as the means to produce more powerful and deadly weapons, counting on the post-war government to generously fund all sorts of peaceful research again.

And for a convention whose theme is "We Built It!" and a disdain for government help, bringing up Neil Armstrong is rather humorous.
- His father was an auditor for the state of Ohio.
- Neil received his K-12 education in public schools.
- He got his B.A. in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University, a public college.
- He paid for his college education by using the Holloway Program, which meant the government picked up the tab in exchange for service in the Navy.
- He was a decorated Navy combat pilot who flew in the Korean War.
- He was a test pilot for the NACA, the predecessor to NASA, as a test pilot for high speed research.
- He was selected to be an astronaut by the Air Force and was trained for the program by them.
I think we can all be very impressed by the success of the private sector in putting the first man on the Moon.///

Same thing here, only this asshole is applying it to priests molesting kids, which is a whole new level of fucked up.

I know. It's like bringing up Steve Jobs and talking about how he was fired from Apple, hired back, and brought them untold riches. The reality is that Jobs wasn't fired, he quit. And only after he'd tried to have the CEO he'd lured to run Apple thrown out because the two of them didn't agree, said CEO called a board meeting to discuss Jobs' attempted coup, and the board chose to remove Jobs from a management position. Likewise, while Apple has had success since Jobs came back, somebody should ask Mitt what "NeXT Computer" was and how successful it was under Jobs' leadership.

Think what really sticks out isn't Clint's speech so much as his delivery. His speech, at least read in transcript form, wasn't anything magical but it fit with the whole point of the night, namely bashing an imaginary construct filling in for Obama. A younger actor might have been able to do it a bit more justice, perhaps even come off as somewhat humorous. But Clint seemed to be trying to play a comedian when he's known primarily for serious, tough-as-nails characters and it just didn't really work.

Country Music's Fake Patriotism
And fake morality: I recall the ex-wife bringing home Toby Keith's CD "White Trash with Money", which contained a song called "There's No Right Way to do The Wrong Thing", an ode to moral absolutism, and which was dedicated to his "Lord and Savior, Jesus".
The last track on the album, "Running Block", was about screwing drunk fat chicks in a motel room.
Jesus loves, ya, Toby.

Think what really sticks out isn't Clint's speech so much as his delivery. His speech, at least read in transcript form, wasn't anything magical but it fit with the whole point of the night, namely bashing an imaginary construct filling in for Obama.
The whole point of the Republican party is to bash an imaginary construct filling in for Obama. They've gone beyond anything resembling public service into the fantasy realm where the President is the boogieman of their nightmares, responsible for every single thing that makes them unhappy.
Clint's actual support for Rmoney was the thinnest gruel he could get away with. He did, however, support bringing troops home from Afghanistan, mentioned student debt and Libertarians, painted a glowing memory of Obama's inauguration, and reminded us politicians are our employees. He swam in the crazy river, where the GOP is, then he came back out.

- He was selected to be an astronaut by the Air Force and was trained for the program by them.I think we can all be very impressed by the success of the private sector in putting the first man on the Moon.///
And the rocket that got them there was largely engineered by Germans that the U.S. government policed up from the battlefields of WW2... And of course, the administration of the program and the and executive directive to go in the first place all came from *shock* the gubmint.

Practical science, in the Golden Age of American inventors, was largely individuals and small corporations finding commercial applications for already-discovered scientific priniples.
But we came to find out the hard way that research into things like theoretical physics and space exploration is a collective undertaking, one that requires a government to back and finance it.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The ghost of Jimmy Stewart is #Harvey pissed off for Eastwood's #Eastwooding. Bob Newhart wants his skit back. And yet that performance overshadows everything that Mitt hoped to accomplish.
Years from now, what will people remember about this convention?
It will likely be Eastwood's performance.

Finally, a word about Ryan. There’s a reason the so-called “fact-checkers” and other liberals have gone beserk about him. It’s quite simply this: He is the most impressive Republican politician since Reagan. Not just smart and well-informed, but also disarming, comfortable, and persuasive. Like a triathlete, he’s great at many things at once. As such, he delights us and scares the Hell out of them.

Patriotism should inspire, not satisfy.
I could have been born on any patch of dirt on this rock. I had utterly no control over that. I have no particular attachment, emotional or otherwise, to this one. The country I live in (it is not "my" country any more than this is "my" Earth or "my" universe, it was here long before me and will be here long after) has done some great things. It has also done so horrible things. On balance, I would rather live here than anywhere else at this particular moment in time, but this is largely a matter of convenience as there are many comparable ones to live in if I chose.
My allegiance is to humanity, not to a patch of dirt. I am inspired by what people do, not by what arbitrary human-drawn border they happen to be standing in when they do it.

The saddest part about the entire convention is that some new reality tv show - Honey Boo Boo beat out the convention converage on nearly all accounts. While the combined coverage beat out the newest in a long line of exploitation reality shows, the show beat out the individual networks, including Fox:
The fourth episode of "Honey Boo Boo" pulled in just shy of 3 million viewers at 10 p.m., according to Nielsen overnight ratings, growing 30 percent from last week's 2.3 million haul.
In the demo, "Honey Boo Boo" did even better. The half-hour series' showing among adults 18-49 bested all other cable outings for the night — coverage of the Republican National Convention, included — to pull a 1.3 rating.Fox News gave the show its closest competition with a 1.2 adults rating in that same time period. On the broadcast networks,"Honey Boo Boo" bested ABC and CBS' demo showing for the RNC combined and topped NBC by two tenths of a point. Aggregate coverage of the RNC across networks obviously eclipsed "Honey Boo Boo" considerably.
That's truly a sad state of affairs for everyone -

Another day, another beheading by the Taliban. This time the victims are kids.
Two Afghan children beheaded in separate events
KABUL - An adolescent boy and a young girl have been beheaded in two separate incidents in Afghanistan, local officials and police said on Friday, in the latest brazen attacks that have raised fresh questions about a splintering Taliban.
A 12-year-old boy was kidnapped and killed in southern Kandahar province on Wednesday, his severed head placed near his body to send a warning to police, said provincial governor spokesman Jawid Faisal.
...Separately, a 6-year-old girl was beheaded in eastern Kapisa province on Thursday, said provincial police chief Abdul Hamed.
"We are not sure if she was beheaded by her family or the Taliban, but we know the Taliban control the area," Hamed said of the killing in Jalukhil village. He added that he could not send investigators to the area out of fears for their safety.
The murders follow the shooting or beheading of 17 young revelers attending a party in southern Helmand province this week, which officials said was the work of the Taliban, a charge the group also denied.
...In Kandahar's Zhari district, officials also said on Friday that a 16-year-old boy accused by the Taliban of spying for the government was beheaded and skinned in late July.
Gruesome indeed.

On the final morning of the Republican National Convention, Karl Rove took the stage at the Tampa Club to provide an exclusive breakfast briefing to about 70 of the Republican party’s highest-earning and most powerful donors. During the more than hour-long session, Rove explained to an audience dotted with hedge fund billionaires and investors—including John Paulson and Wilbur Ross—how his super PAC, American Crossroads, will persuade undecided voters in crucial swing states to vote against Barack Obama. He also detailed plans for Senate and House races, and joked, “We should sink Todd Akin. If he’s found mysteriously murdered, don’t look for my whereabouts!”

The thing that bothers me the most about Eastwood's jackass performance is that he indulged in imagining the President as a punk-ass-jerk, putting words in the President's mouth that he would never say in reality. Now, I guess it counts as satire, but it's the perfect illustration of how conservatives have retreated into total fantasy because reality doesn't suit their beliefs.
Also, the image of an old white guy literally talking down to the President and "putting him in his place" is kinda disturbing. A standing impersonator would have actually been less offensive.

Details emerge on Old Bridge NJ shooting. Two killed, plus shooter, in a Pathmark supermarket in Old Bridge. Police are still looking at a motive, but the shooter was an employee:
Authorities say he opened fire on employees he saw when he walked into the Pathmark store in Old Bridge. The store's front windows were shattered by gunfire.
Officials said at a news conference that police fired no rounds.
Authorities say 16 shots were fired and an AK-47, extra ammunition and a handgun were found at the scene. The motive is being investigated.
The shooting happened at about 4 a.m. inside a Pathmark grocery store in Old Bridge, Mayor Owen Henry told nj.com. The store was closed at the time and was scheduled to open at 6 a.m.
Employees who were in the store at the time of the shooting congregated later in the morning outside a TGI Friday's restaurant in the shopping center.
Police at the scene were keeping onlookers well away from the store. A number of vehicles were in the parking lot outside the supermarket, along with police vehicles.

Details emerge on Old Bridge NJ shooting. Two killed, plus shooter, in a Pathmark supermarket in Old Bridge. Police are still looking at a motive, but the shooter was an employee:
More details...
OLD BRIDGE — An ex-marine fatally shot two co-workers at a Route 9 supermarket in Old Bridge, then turned the gun on himself, the mayor said.
At a morning press conference, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan, said the 23-year-old suspected gunman killed an 18-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man.
Kaplan did not release the names of the victims, but the Asbury Park Press has learned they are Cristina LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Breen, 24.
...Old Bridge Mayor Owen Henry said the ex-marine, also an Old Bridge resident, had worked at the store for about two weeks. He left the store this morning, and then returned a short time later, dressed in camouflage and armed with an AK-47 and an automatic pistol, the mayor said.
The ex-marine’s fatal wound was self-inflicted, said Henry.
Kaplan couldn't immediately confirm the military background of the 23-year-old man, but Manase Acheampong, 25, of Old Bridge, said the 23-year-old was a cousin of friend, and he said, that man did have a military background.
"He was just a local kid, and from what I'd seen, a normal kid. ... I never would have guessed this in a million years," said Acheampomg.
He said the 23-year-old is a native of Brooklyn.

Meanwhile, a member of the Florida National Guard providing security for the convention shot another guardsman Thursday night in an apparent accident at a La Quinta hotel in St. Petersburg, deputies said.
No charges were filled against Jeffrey A. Spurr, 26, of Bronson, for shooting the gun’s owner Michael Wdowiak, 21, of Weirsdale, in the upper body and left hand, said Marianne Pasha, spokeswoman for the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Spurr was looking at the grip on Wdowiak’s personal .357 revolver when it fired, hitting Wdowiak, Pasha said. Wdowiak underwent surgery but his condition was unavailable. The men are members of the National Guard contingent in Ocala.
Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said she’s happy the event has been so peaceful and admitted that the estimates of rabble-rousers coming here turned out to be overblown. She said there may be a couple of thousand protesters in all, if that many.
If that’s the case, there were two officers for every protester.

How police on bikes intercepted anarchists
As Monday's RNC march wrapped up, deputies say about 50 to 60 members of the Black Bloc, an anarchist group, were looking to stir things up.
From a camera perched on a high-rise building in Tampa, the view showed protesters on the corner of Whiting and Morgan Street running to the north.
Captain Kyle Cockream with the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office is in charge of the bike unit for the RNC. He says his team has received word that troublemakers were on their way to a secure lot where federal agents, including the Secret Service, had their vehicles.
But before the Black Blockers could get in, deputies and officers created what they call a bike wall.
"They were there to meet the protesters. By the time the protesters got there on foot, they were out of breath. The bike cops had their fence formed, they were off their bikes had their arms folded and were waiting," Cockream said.
In fact, Cockream says the police training, the massive law enforcement presence and a storm named Isaac helped keep Black Blockers far away from Tampa.
Seventeen bus loads of them never showed up, the sheriff's office says.
"They were canceled. Whether because the transportation company didn't want to risk their assets coming down here, or they didn't have the infrastructure to pay for a hotel, " said Cockream.

Iran has doubled uranium enrichment machines – report
Iran has doubled the number of uranium enrichment machines it has in an underground bunker, a UN report said on Thursday, showing Tehran continued to defy western pressure to stop its atomic work.
In the weeks and months when Israeli politicians increased their talk of air strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, the Islamic republic was rapidly increasing the enrichment capacity of its Fordow site, buried deep underground to withstand any such hit.
The UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in its quarterly report on Iran that the number of centrifuges at Fordow, near the holy Shia city of Qom, about 80 miles (130km) from Tehran, had more than doubled to 2,140 from 1,064 in May.

I find it more weird than anything. I thought the whole point of this mystery speaker was to have someone well known and respected by the American people to make a case for Mitt. Instead, we had Clint Eastwood yelling at a chair and blaming Obama for policies that his predecessor supported and that his opponent supports. Plus what's getting little talk is how Clint said we don't need a lawyer as president. Well Obama's not the only lawyer running. It's just surreal. I think the Obama campaign compared it to a Dali painting.

As I stated yesterday, the problem is he made a Super Bowl commercial praising the auto industry's comeback, yet is supporting the guy (from freakin' MIchigan, no less!) who was perfectly happy to see it crash and burn.

Chilean activist: Zionists are worse than Nazis
A political activist barred from Israel in April is back in the news in his native Chile, following a interview in which he said that “current Zionists” are worse than Nazis.
Mauricio Abu-Ghosh, the president of Chile’s Palestinian Federation, made the comments [Spanish] on Radio Cooperativa, partly as a response to a interview given by Shai Agosin, the president of the country’s Jewish community.
Telling listeners that Israel is inflicting a “brutal genocide” on Palestinians, Abu-Ghosh added that “the Nazis were boys compared to current Zionists.”
“I can affirm that the student surpassed the teacher,” Abu-Ghosh went on.

No, I'm surprised a person like that is supporting Mitt Romney who holds socially conservative positions and said that Detroit should have been let to fail. He's entitled to support whomever he wants but I am surprised to see him supporting Mitt when Mitt's own positions are so clearly in contrast with his own. They are letting the IAEA go where Iran wants them to go. They are hiding and bulldozing past weapons sites to keep the UN officials from seeing what they are up to.
Let me be plainer. On full examination the whole argument that the Iranians are building - and are close to - nuclear weapons reeks of the same misdirection of the claim Saddam was building and close to having nuclear weapons in Iraq about a decade ago. There are major issues that aren't there and the constant rebuttal is:
"Well that's because they're hiding them from the inspectors."

re: #548 kirkspencer
Riiiight. Problem: the sites where the bulldozing is done should still have residual markers if they were used for the purposes claimed. They aren't alpha- or beta-heavy, however.
They are hard at work cleaning up the place. Hopefully the IAEA inspectors will find something if the Iranians let the inspect the place.
The IAEA also expressed concerns about Parchin, a military site south of the capital that it wants to inspect for evidence of past nuclear weapons development.
"Significant ground scraping and landscaping have been undertaken over an extensive area at and around the location," it said.
Five buildings had been demolished and power lines, fences and paved roads removed, the report said, "extensive activities" that would hamper its investigation if granted access.
"The activities observed … further strengthen the agency's assessment that it is necessary to have access to the location at Parchin without further delay," the IAEA said.
Iran says Parchin is a conventional military facility and has dismissed the allegations about it as "ridiculous".

Holy cow, this is interesting.
Israeli Paper: “A Shouting Match” Took Place Between Israeli PM and US Ambassador Over Iran
“A shouting match” allegedly took place between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro during a visit by Congressman Mike Rogers (R-MI), Chair of the House Intelligence Committee earlier this week, the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronot reported Friday.
Under the banner headline “The Conflict”, correspondent Shimon Shiffer, claims that during the meeting with Rogers, who was accompanied by Ambassador Shapiro, Netanyahu blamed Obama for not doing enough to stop the Iranian nuclear program and trying to block Israel from acting independently, and as a result, “time has run out”. At this point, Shapiro intervened to protest that the PM was misrepresenting Obama’s position, “ignoring the President’s commitment to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons”.
According to the report, when the Prime Minister responded, “sparks flew” and the meeting ended on a confrontational note. Shiffer claims that during the whole exchange, Congressman Rogers “was watching from the sidelines, stunned”. The article ends by quoting an unnamed political source who claims that “if Obama wins, Netanyahu will have to look for safe shelter from the President’s vengeance”. The Algemeiner has not independently confirmed the accuracy of this story.

[Link: www.theonion.com...]
“As the convention kicks off Tuesday with speeches from the likes of Rick Santorum and Nikki Haley, we should prepare ourselves to hear a more-or-less unending stream of ideas that should never even enter one’s mind, let alone be verbalized, in this day and age,” said Elizabeth Unger, a political scientist at Georgetown University. “It’s difficult to comprehend, but dozens of comments on such topics as human relationships and the physical world itself—which will seem as if they were crafted by some primitive unthinking civilization that existed centuries ago—will actually be emphasized, repeated, and used to punctuate key points in every single speech.”
“And what’s more baffling is that speakers will receive legitimate applause for saying things in public that no reasonable, informed member of society would ever willingly say in private,” she continued. “In fact, the more monstrous and archaic the thing sounds, the more ardent the ovation will be.”
Unger said the broad range of antiquated and inappropriate things that will be articulated each night on live television will not, as one might suspect, be blurted out by accident, as an involuntary reflex, or from momentary lack of forethought. While she acknowledged that such remarks would defy all contemporary definitions of logic and propriety, Unger confirmed they would actually be written down, organized, and rehearsed in advance, as if they in fact represented the speakers’ fully formed opinions and deeply held convictions on those particular issues.
“What’s fascinating is that these things, which will be spoken against all sense of contemporary decency and rational judgment, will not be the rantings of degenerates or imbeciles,” said Erik Olin Wright, president of the American Sociological Association. “Rather, they’ll be voiced by well-known political figures, distinguished business leaders, and top minds of national conservative movements—dozens of outwardly functional, ordinary people who for some reason appear eager to vocalize bizarrely backward-looking ideologies that no right-thinking modern human being would ever fathom giving voice to.”
“It’s almost as if these people are unaware that the Enlightenment, the scientific revolution, various civil rights movements, and the entirety of social progress over the previous several centuries even occurred,” Wright added.
Scholars also affirmed that sentiments relating to economic opportunity, natural resources, and human culture that should never exit a person’s mouth would in fact be chanted in unison throughout the convention, easily bringing the total count of grossly inappropriate utterances into the hundreds of thousands.
According to the vast majority of experts contacted, such bizarrely out-of-date concepts, if ever fully acted upon, would nullify scores of generations of human advancement.
“If this gathering were held in the 1700s or 1800s, a certain fraction of the comments they will make on issues like religion and commerce might be considered somewhat appropriate by people of the time,” anthropologist Gregory Switzer said. “But much of what is said at the RNC about fairness and the treatment of fellow human beings in need, for example, is far more consistent with the very beginnings of rudimentary social empathy in our species dating back to the earliest emergence of human civilization some 10,000 years ago, when our barely developed ancient ancestors would literally smash each other’s skulls in with large rocks without a care or second thought.”

Yeah. If Romney is elected, he will gut social services, slash taxes on the highest income earners, mutilate labor laws, destroy environmental regulations, but I don't think starting wars is very important to him.

I've been thinking about this too. I don't think the election results will have much of a difference with the probability of an attack on Iran. Whatever pentagon and state dept. assessments and analysis isn't going to change with a new President. In fact, I think the decision about allowing Iran to go nuclear or not has probably already been made. The diplomacy and saber rattling is just for show. It's a myth that Obama and the Derms are peace loving pacifists and the Republicans are heartless warmongers.
While neither party as as extreme as you paint in your last sentence, I don't agree at all that the likelihood of US military involvement against Iran is anywhere near the same with Dems or Reps in the Whitehouse.

No, I don't think he'd throw granny off a cliff. However, his stated positions include everything that I said above. I'm not sure why on earth you think that it was hyperbole. Have you read his positions, and the GOP's positions? Feel free to demonstrate that I'm wrong about any of the points I made by citing Romney or the GOP's positions.
You won't be able to, because the GOP is proudly anti-labor, clamoring to slash social services, and absolutely dead set on deregulating industry. You know this.

If you are correct that they are just building nuclear power-plants, please explain why they must build their nuclear reactors deep under ground and hiding them.
The repetitive threats by Israel to bomb them?
Simple reality: if I had to live in one or the other, I'd choose Israel over Iran. But the international threats have not been a one-way street, and Israel had bombed nuclear facilities in the past.
Oh shit, Khameni can be trusted? Are you shitting me?
Yes, I think he can be trusted in this case -- because it was a fatwa, not a pronouncement.
You've locked yourself in the Cretan paradox by assuming everything Khameni says is a lie. Your solution is "except what I want to assume is the truth" which is an untrustworthy reed.
It's wiser to think of him as a pope analogue, back when the pope commanded a nation that could not be ignored. A Fatwa by him is nominally equivalent to a pope making an apostolic constitution at the least.
Pay attention to the fatwas. They're solid basis, not political blathering.

Romney's ignorance/willful disregard for global warming will have repercussions.
He may have gotten cheers and laughs about how "President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet… My promise is to help you and your family" but the fact is that the two concepts aren't mutually exclusive. We know that insurance companies are seriously concerned about natural disasters and they've suffered tremendous losses as a result of storms like Katrina, Lee, Irene, and before that Andrew. Severe storms, flooding, and other damage are likely to increase as a result of higher temperatures in offshore waters, higher water levels increase the chances of coastal flooding.
Those costs are passed on to the insureds and the federal government (NFIP!). We ignore the science at our own peril. In fact, insurance companies have been warning about the costs of global warming for years.
The irony is that Mitt's heading to Louisiana to see the storm damage from Isaac today, even as the federal levee improvement program helped protect NOLA from flooding.

Rick Perry: 'King' Obama Leading a 'Clear Attack on People of Faith'
Led by this administration, when you think about the clear messages that they send, whether it’s by fiat—and that’s one of my great concerns about this president, we didn’t elect a King Mr. Obama, we elected a president, we expect the rule of law to be maintained in this country, go to Congress, pass legislation—he’s pushing these programs through whether it’s a clear attack on the Catholic Church and their opposition to contraception, those are purely wars against religion. When you think about the ministerial exception that he went to the Supreme Court to try to overturn, you know thank God he lost 9-0, even his liberal judges wouldn’t go that far, so clear attack on people of faith. My instinct is, I don’t have clear evidence, but my instinct is through other agencies there is this intimidation factor to our places of worship that you best not be in job of anything that we decide is political. For instance, clear intimidation to churches using IRS as a tool to keep anyone from making any statements about a political election.
Funny this coming from the man waging a clear war against minority voters in his own state.

One of the things I've been using as evidence of global warming that isn't "lying scientists" is the slow migration of maple syrup production. It's got to be the right temperature sequence. If it doesn't get cold enough the starch doesn't get stored but instead continues to be used, and the rising spring sap has far less sugar in it.
For what it's worth, my other informal evidence is garden clubs across the nation, who have been documenting when they could plant, what grew, and so forth for well over a century. Simplistically, the "zones" have shifted half a zone north in that time -- and in some cases it's a full zone. “Mexican Mitt” parody twitter account suspended before Romney’s RNC speech
‘Mexican Mitt,’ a parody twitter account that has been railing against Mitt Romney since the primaries and pokes fun at Romney’s on-again, off-again relationship with Mexican ancestry, was mysteriously suspended on the eve of Mitt Romney’s speech at the Republican National Convention Thursday night.
[...]
For his part, Alcaraz has a theory.
“There was some guy who got really upset with Mexican Mitt,” Alcaraz says. “Mexican Mitt told him something like, ‘don’t be so butt hurt because your account sucks and mine doesnt.’ I think the guy may have reported it as abuse.”
Alcaraz says an automated message from Twitter said the account would be reinstated if Mexican Mitt responded by saying he agreed to the Twitter terms of service. He acquiesced.
[...]
The move to suspend the parody account by Twitter came on the same day Romney’s campaign made history by becoming the first presidential campaign to buy a trending topic on Twitter. The hashtag #RomneyRyan2012 was promoted by the campaign for a minimum of $120,000, according to Mashable.

That's the same up here. A couple of years ago a local garden club had a weekend festival. One of the speakers, from a major garden plant producer, gave a talk on "What Climate Change Means for Gardeners". He talked about negatives but the major part of it was about how now people can and will be able to grow so many new kinds of plants which before wouldn't survive in their zone. Back then the zones were already officially being changed. I have a couple of things that I planted as annuals in my zone are now pretty much perennials.

Romney/Ryan Would Undermine Churches And Faith-Based Charities
Ryan has said local charities and churches should provide for needy communities instead of the federal government. But there is a flaw this plan: churches and faith-based charities, which offer roughly $50 billion worth of services a year to the poor and needy, often depend on government funds to operate. Catholic Charities, for example, is one of the largest charities in America, and gets over half of its operating budget from federal funds.
Yet the Romney/Ryan ticket appears undeterred by this reality. In fact, if Romney followed through on Ryan’s proposed budget and cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by $169 billion, every single church in America would have to come up with an additional $50,000 simply to feed those in need. For many cash-strapped churches, this is an impossible task.
What’s more, the Romney/Ryan budget would likely overburden soup kitchens and food programs by cutting welfare, food stamps and agriculture subsidies by two trillion dollars over the next ten years. These cuts would leave millions of Americans – especially those most in need of assistance – without the means to feed and clothe themselves, and already-overburdened faith-based charities unable to provide for them.
So if congregations and charities can’t provide the care required and Ryan’s government refuses to help, who exactly is the “strong” tasked with stepping in for the “weak”? Ryan isn’t saying.

Heh! If you will remember, large scale thefts of sugar or molasses was one of the things they were looking for to find the next nest.
One of the best sci fi horror movies out of the 50's, and it stands up pretty damned well today. Still effective and scary.
It was one of my favorites. Showed it to my kids a few months ago when it was on Netflix.

Can't wait for Sat to weigh in on this because I was floored that someone would actually say something like this in real life.

It is serious, and could effect the market but there is just something about it being maple syrup that just tickles my funny bone. I'm trying to imagine the people planning the "The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist of 2012" and it cracks me up.
"It was late. It was cold. Jacques and I had skipped the hockey game to try and make sure we could pull this off. A strong wind kicked up. I pulled my touque tightly over my head and chugged down the last bit of Moosehead beer from the bottle in my hand. It was quiet, the only sound was some faint Celine Dion music coming from somewhere in the distance.
We quietly pulled up on our toboggans. Using hockey sticks to carefully pry the doors open, we took a look around. Gold eh, sweet brown gold."

I have it on DVD. My 12 year old kid was trying to shush another kid over visiting while it was on (and being noisy), and told her "This is one of my favorites!"

The USDA hardiness zone maps have shifted over the past decade, and here in Northern NJ, we're about a zone higher.
This map shows the creep northward.

My daughter had to write an essay for her 4th grade teacher about herself. She listed her favorite movie as "The Longest Day."

Why did I know that was Canada without even clicking the link? WHY MUST CANADIAN STEREOTYPES CONSTANTLY BE PROVED ACCURATE?
At least our stereotypes tend to be pretty innocuous and great humor fodder.
I'm okay with it. lol

Romney/Ryan Would Undermine Churches And Faith-Based Charities
I'm sure R/R will support the states having an unfunded mandate to set up workhouses to create jobs for these people. Can't have them just sitting around waiting for a handout and voting Democratic.

Things must have been REALLY bad when even FOXNEWS(!) thinks you're lying too much!
To anyone watching Ryan’s speech who hasn’t been paying much attention to the ins and outs and accusations of the campaign, I suspect Ryan came across as a smart, passionate and all-around nice guy (....)
On the other hand, to anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to facts, Ryan’s speech was an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech. On this measure, while it was Romney who ran the Olympics, Ryan earned the gold.
Yes, I didn't believe it either but this was actually printed on the site of Foxnews. Roger Ailes must be steaming with anger with this reporter....
Ryan in three words:
Dazzling
Decieving
Distracting.

She's one of Fox's token liberals. My theory is that the FOX PTB just read the first paragraph and said, "That sounds good!" and ran with it.

During a trip to Epcot at Disneyworld, Pennsylvania delegate Mark Harris and his wife were shocked and offended to find a Mexican employee working at the amusement park’s American pavilion, which showcases the different cultures in the United States. According to the couple’s blog, Harris complained to staff that he was “highly offended” that a “person from Mexico” was working in the American pavilion when other nations’ pavilions were staffed by people from each respective country:
The Sioux called in sick, and the Menominee was at a midewewin.
If he was offended, then he need not ever go badk there again...you know, like boycotting Chick-Fil-A...

They are letting the IAEA go where Iran wants them to go. They are hiding and bulldozing past weapons sites to keep the UN officials from seeing what they are up to.
That statement sounds vaguely familiar. Are they also shipping their WMD's off to Syria? Gassing the Kurds? Throwing babies out of incubators in the hospital? IN THE SHAPE OF A MUSHROOM CLOUD!

re: #550 kirkspencer
Let me be plainer. On full examination the whole argument that the Iranians are building - and are close to - nuclear weapons reeks of the same misdirection of the claim Saddam was building and close to having nuclear weapons in Iraq about a decade ago. There are major issues that aren't there and the constant rebuttal is:
"Well that's because they're hiding them from the inspectors."
Your memory is as bad as mine. And by bad I mean it remembers the hook, line, and sinker used for the last folly.

Eh, I'm of the cynical, borderline conspiracy theory-ish opinion that Fox throws in an opposing "liberal" viewpoint now and then, as childish proof they're "fair and balanced."
I wouldn't read too much into it.

re: #592 aagcobb
I don't think either Netanyahu or Romney are that stupid. I doubt Romney believes 90% of the shit he says; he is the guy who enacted universal health care first.
No, he didn't. The bizarre thing where everyone is forced to pay private insurance for health care is not 'universal health care'. It's trying desperately to pretend that health care is a 'free market' thing. The fact that it now exists nationwide does not mean America has universal health care.
