Tech Note: The HTML5 Makeover

Coding
LGF • Views: 30,197

You may not have noticed any visible changes at LGF recently, but behind the scenes major infrastructure work has been under way, and the site is now powered by totally valid HTML5 code.

This was a bit trickier than I thought it would be when I started; some of the LGF code has been there for a long time, and it took a lot of reengineering, not always in obvious places.

For one example, when I first started testing with some of the new HTML5 tags like <audio> and <video>, I was surprised to see the tags just disappearing from the code when I loaded the page. This weird behavior was puzzling until I realized it was being caused by PHP’s HTML Tidy library, which I’ve been using for years to clean up the code before outputting it.

The version of Tidy installed on our web server was not hip to these new HTML5 tags, and it was doing what it was supposed to do with unknown tags — stripping them out. After a bit of research into the Tidy docs, I came up with the following option settings to let Tidy know about all the new tags:

<?php
$tidyOptions = array(
	'show-body-only' => TRUE,
	'hide-comments' => TRUE,
	'new-blocklevel-tags' => 'article,aside,details,summary,figure,figcaption,dialog,header,footer,hgroup,section,nav,menu,datagrid',
	'new-inline-tags' => 'video,audio,canvas,ruby,rt,rp,command,mark,time,meter,progress',
	'new-empty-tags' => 'source',
	'output-html' => TRUE,
	'wrap' => 0,
);
$htmlText = tidy_repair_string($htmlText, $tidyOptions);
?>

I may have missed one or two HTML5 tags, but I think that gets most of the important ones.

This HTML5 makeover is a big first step toward the eventual redesign I have planned, using adaptive techniques to make LGF much more compatible with smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices.

The plan is not to have a separate URL for mobile devices - the code will adapt itself to the device's screen size and capabilities.

How difficult is that? My webpage is an admittedly ancient site put together in '03 or so. Whenever I try to access it on an Android device, it's browser by default says "m.mywebsite.com" and then says the site doesn't exist.

The site works fine on any iOS device, though (except for the one Flash animation).

Good direction Charles, because everyone knows that soon it's going to be a Pad, Pad, World.

Well, refactoring existing code is not a simple matter, and adaptive techniques usually require some pretty big changes, both in the code and in the way you think about it. If you're interested, check out some of the articles on adaptive design at [Link: alistapart.com...]

best wishes to D_F in his job hunt - i'll bet i've been laid off more times than he has so i know how discouraging and disorienting it is - my advice is to give yourself at least a six month estimate on finding a new job, and try to feel the excitement of the hunt. personally, to sooth my feelings of despair i just get on the computer and find more listings to send out my resume to

also, don't worry about the jobs you interview for and don't get, you probably wouldn't be happy with them anyway - so many times i've agonized over blowing interviews for jobs only to land one in the end that was better than all the ones i didn't get

Professor Hamilton has up a blog entry on why we can't return to a gold standard, in response to all the talk about the GOP platform, complete with an illustrative graph showing how impossible it would be to price American labor in gold:

Return to the gold standard

However, the best line is in one of the comments in response to this comment:

It's impossible to conduct a purely rational discussion about gold. You need to bring in the moral. So for example, many people are attracted to the gold standard because they see it as reflecting the natural order, as a way of honoring the intentions they read into the Bible. They see "fiat money" as fundamentally dishonest, to some even blasphemous. I've heard comparisons to the Tower of Babble, meaning fiat money is human hubris. [...]
Posted by: jonathan

after which we find:

The Tower of Babble is what you find at a GOP convention. The Tower of Babel is what you find in the Bible.

It's hard to explain but (and Jimmah, forgive me here) but Scotland is kind of religious place and experience). It really does reach inside you.

I'm not idealizing Scotland (enough problems for two nations to deal with) but there is a dignity that supersedes the merely 'nationalist' sentiment.

No less true is the idea 'There will always be a Scotland'.

That's nice to hear! I would dispute one thing though - regardless of how it may feel to a visitor to the highlands, the Scotland of today is much more the country of David Hume than it is of any religious figure, and that's a good thing.

Kudos, Charles. I was quite an early adopter of mobile browsing and it annoyed me to find that the huge array of clever features you had brought to LGF, with a succession of scripts over the years, made the site sluggish - not only, but especially, on mobile browsers. For a long time now that hasn't been an issue and once again I have to take my hat off to you. Bravissimo!

4 Reasons ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ Is Secretly About Drugs
Nice, right? Anyway, here's my thesis: Raiders of the Lost Ark is not an action-adventure movie about an archaeologist who plays by his own rules and saves the day. Instead, the film is an exploration of Marion Ravenwood's crippling drug addiction. An addiction that was born from her unhealthy relationship and continued association with Indiana Jones. Is it true? Who cares. Can I prove ...

there's no such thing as Flickr Pro, because today, with cameras as pervasive as they are, there is no such thing really as professional photographers, when there's everything is professional photographers. Certainly there is varying levels of skills, but we didn't want to have a Flickr Pro anymore, we wanted everyone to have professional quality photos, space, and sharing." - Marissa Mayer, Yahoo ...

WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it. Pfeiffer gives the impression that GOP operatives deliberately tried to "smear the president" with false, doctored e-mails. But the reporters involved have indicated they were told by their sources that these were summaries, taken from notes ...
