The Right Wing Base Eagerly Promotes Lies in Iowa
What does it say about the right wing that one of their most prevalent slogans, endorsed and relentlessly pushed by their presidential candidate, is a dishonest reply to an imaginary statement?
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — President Obama received a less than warm welcome and a warning upon arrival at the airport here on the second stop of his Iowa visit, which was aimed at recapturing some of the magic the state gave his run to the White House in 2008.
Greeting Air Force One as it touched down under sunny skies and sultry heat was a hand-painted banner draped across the top of an airplane hangar that reads, “Obama Welcome to SUX - We Did Build This.” “SUX” is the airport code for Sioux City.
The “We Did Build This” talking point shows that today’s conservative movement is heavily invested in false claims, from their aversion to science, to Birtherism, to their bizarre mischaracterizations of President Obama’s views and statements. This deeply dysfunctional political party has devolved into hallucinatory fantasies and attempts at outright deception.
Just for the record, here it is again — the actual quote from President Obama containing the words, “You didn’t build that,” in context. Obviously, “you didn’t build that” was referring to the bridges and roads and infrastructure of American society, making the rather uncontroversial observation that people who become successful do it with help from these systems and from other people.
“If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something—there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business—you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.”
