His explanation for why he lied about his marathon lie turns out to pretty much be a lie too.
He claims he just made up what he thought would be an "ordinary time", but in the interview, said he was fast.
HH: I've just gotta ask, what's your personal best?
PR: Under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something.
HH: Holy smokes. All right, now you go down to Miami University...
PR: I was fast when I was younger, yeah.

Mike Huckabee is lying. Again.
Huckabee has taken to repeating the lie that President Obama is a God-hating God-hater who refuses to say the word “Creator” when quoting from the Declaration of Independence.
This is a lie. Mike Huckabee is lying.
And Mike Huckabee is telling a particularly stupid lie. President Obama speaks in public, a lot. And almost every word he has said for the past several years has been recorded on video. So claiming that Obama never says something he says all the time — the president loves quoting the Declaration — either reveals Huckabee’s hamfistedness as a liar, or else it reveals his utter contempt for those in his audience, whom he assumes are too stupid not to just swallow every bogus word he feeds them.

And it's total fucking bullshit. If you're into running enough to finish a marathon at all, never mind sub-three-hours, you don't forget stuff like this.
I haven't run a 5k for ten years, but I can tell you right off the top of my head that my PR is 19:XX (I can fill in the X's). Even longer for a 1500 (high school), but that was 4:XX. I know my marathon time to the second, nearly as long ago as Ryan ran his. And for damn sure, if I forget these times someday, I won't somehow figure I probably actually ran a 15-minute 5k.
It's not just a lie, but it's an insulting lie, and he's telling another insulting lie on top of it.

Speaking of poor timing, Mitt Romney just sent me this email:
Friend,
In a few hours, I’ll take the podium before a Republican Party that has been united and inspired by a common conviction:
We believe in America.
We believe in America, even though the last four years have been full of difficulties and disappointments, doubt and despair.
We believe in America, even though millions of American families are worried about their jobs, their mortgages, their children, and their future.
We believe in America, even though President Obama’s failed policies have left us with record high unemployment, lower take-home pay, and the weakest economy since the Great Depression.
But we also believe that America can do better, because decline is not our destiny.
I commit to you that I will be the president this moment demands.
I ask you to commit like never before -- donate $20.12 to support Paul and me and the entire Republican team.
It will be my privilege to stand at the podium to accept the nomination. And I will stand not just for every supporter, and not just for the Republican Party -- I’ll stand for every American who believes our best days are ahead.
Thank you,
Mitt Romney

Bryan Fischer: The choice between the parties is no longer political but moral
Bottom line: there are enormous contrasts between the two parties on four of the greatest moral issues of our day: abortion, marriage, Israel and God.
This all means the American people are faced with a clear, stark and unambiguous choice between these two party platforms. To choose the one is to choose darkness and evil and the wrath of God. To choose the other is to choose light, righteousness and the blessing of God.
In other words, the choice between America’s two great political parties is no longer political but moral.

Bryan Fischer: The choice between the parties is no longer political but moral
Ok, kids! Time to play "find the talking points"
It is certainly a deep disappointment that Ruling Class Republicans are squeamish and cowardly when it comes to the defining moral issues of our time. This is especially unfortunate in light of the proud and noble history of the Republican Party, which was formed to fight the institution of slavery and to protect one-man, one-woman marriage. As its very first party platform declared, “[I]t is both the right and the imperative duty of Congress to prohibit in the Territories those twin relics of barbarism — Polygamy, and Slavery.”
Regardless of how faithless individual politicians may be, words means things, and the platforms of both parties were enthusiastically adopted this year by the delegates chosen by the grassroots for this purpose.
It is also quite troublesome that the Democratic platform does not recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel while the Republican platform does. This is of great significance for Americans who believe we have a sacred and biblical responsibility to be a national friend to Israel.
And the 2012 Democratic platform makes exactly zero mentions of God, having leached out the sole surviving reference from the 2008 platform. Meanwhile, the Republican platform explicitly references God no less than 12 times.

After President Obama's remarks this morning on the tropical storm headed toward New Orleans, a reporter asked whether it's appropriate to continue campaigning. Obama did not answer the shouted question.
But the truth is, the question would be relevant regardless of the storm. For more than three decades, incumbent presidents have resisted campaigning during the opposing party's convention--no matter what party the president was a member of.
Nitpicking whines about incumbent-vs-challenger will be treated with all of the respect they deserve.

From that article:
I believe the federal government should invest substantially more in basic research — on new energy sources, fuel-economy technology, materials science and the like — that will ultimately benefit the automotive industry, along with many others. I believe Washington should raise energy research spending to $20 billion a year, from the $4 billion that is spent today.
I wonder if Mitt still believes those things today. Quintupling the amount spent on alternative fuel and related research? I think that's the Old Mitt, not the 2012 "severely conservative" New Mitt incarnation.

Fox News has fixated on the fact that the Democratic platform for 2012 does not mention the word "God," and used a misleading graphic that points out that the Republican platform for 2012 references "God" more often than the Democratic platform has in any of the last four election years. The graphic ignores that in 2000 and 2004, the Democratic platform contained the word "God" more times than the Republican platform in those years; moreover, the 2012 Democratic platform has a section on faith.
Fox has run several segments today highlighting how the word "God" does not appear in the 2012 Democratic platform. In one such segment, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) confronted host Bret Baier over the issue, saying that the network is "harping on a trifle" and presenting the Democrats as "godless people."

Ugh. I know one hardcore GOP/Faux News fanboy type who is making a huge deal about this whole God and Jerusalem business because it's been on Fox all day. He thinks that it's going to give the majority of Jewish votes to Mitt Romney and that all Christians will abandon the Dems now. Or something.
I just smiled and changed the subject. Trying to explain how full of shit Fox is to this guy is like trying to explain how magnets work to a Juggalo.

Right. Because a mother who worked tirelessly with La Raza Unida and who considered a Chicano identity important is going to raise her kids without teaching them Spanish. I heard him last night. He sounded exactly like any number of Mexican-American kids here in Texas.

True, they don't always survive. But knowing Spanish in this state is pretty much mandatory. Especially the further south you go. Maybe it's because I lived on the border and I still have family there and in Mexico, I don't know. But not knowing Spanish would just be strange for me, since it was my first language. English came later.
For Julian Castro, the guy writes his name in Spanish. He's got the accent over the "a" and everything, meaning it's meant to be pronounced that way. And looking at his mother, his wife, and his daughter, you know that's a family that speaks Spanish fluently and who probably get through the day with Spanglish.

I'll probably get voted down for this, but the amount of abortion talk at this convention is going a bit overboard and puts the candidacy at risk more than anything. I guess this is to energize the base? If you are pro-choice you're going to already vote for the Dems, if you're pro-life you are going to compromise because you might be more attracted to the obvious economic benefits of this administration.
However the emphasis on abortion, given the economic state of the country and the threat to healthcare in general (ie: repealing "Obamacare") are issues that I think are being put in jeopardy because of this.

Very simple reason.
The Republican Party is waging open warfare on 51% of the voting population, and women are not going to sit idly by.
Polling data has shown that there is a significant swing in women voters regarding the official RNC policy, which goes as far as re-defining rape. Even Republican women are trending more toward Democrats in this election cycle.

El Cap, I see the emphasis not on abortion, but on birth control and women's health.
But mention PP, and all people think of is abortion. The campaign against it has been extremely successful.

I don't give a good goddamn if someone is uncomfortable with abortion talk at the DNC. SOMEONE has to stand up for the rights of women to decide for themselves about their bodies, their lives, their healthcare and their choices, including the choice of whether or not to become a mother.

That's what I figure, and I see the "energize" bit there. I'm guessing the calculus here is that there's more votes to be gained than fighting apathy ... however this also energizes the other side too ... It seems somewhat risky to focus so much on it, I thought the healthcare bit showing that Romney would make pre existing conditions and lifetime caps an issue again was broader and had less downsides. Should be an area of focus (as was shown by the testimonial yesterday).

I used PP for years before I worked my way up to a job that had insurance coverage. I used PP for exams, Pap smears, and birth control at a price I could afford. They picked up my abnormal Pap smear and sent me to a physician who would work out a reasonable price for me to pay to get treated so I didn't develop cervical cancer. I had no abortions during those years nor did my friends in the same boat with no insurance.
In fact, it wasn't until years later that I even know that PP performed abortions. It's not something that they advertised or pushed on anybody. Planned Parenthood will always get my support.

The people who consider abortion a high priority issue are going to vote Romney anyway, since they're going to be the rabid pro-life types.
The Democrats are correct in talking about women's health issues and about healthcare, including abortion. But what I've seen so far is more about equity, such as the line about being a woman no longer being a pre-existing condition, and about giving women empowerment with respect to their healthcare coverage. I haven't seen any speakers so far talking about abortion as much as they have talked about women deciding what is right for themselves.

I'm not saying that Dems don't promote their platform, I'm not sure the emphasis on abortion is really necessary. I'm talking more about a tactical matter, not so much as "being on the right side", at the end of the day being on the right side in my view is more about winning at this point. Sorry for sounding so brutally pragmatic, but I think there's a delicate balance to keep here which is more important on the strategy than on the purity of a message.
Again, the only reason I see for it is the "energize the base argument", let's not kid ourselves to think that these speeches are not coordinated to maximize an outcome after all (see the course correction on the Israel/God position, and the bad optics of having to amend it in the way it happened).

I had to work late last night, so I missed the first lady's remarks.
I just watched them.
She spoke with thrumming eloquence and sincerity about true things. She spoke poetry about the people that make America worth fighting for and the people that make this nation great.
She reminded me that all is not lost.
There is still an America worth fighting for. We haven't been beaten yet. We have not yet succumbed to evils and petty greed that spread nothing but fear, hatred, malice and ignorance. We have not yet sewn a full field of destruction.
She said the word love perhaps a dozen times and spoke shamelessly about what matters most.
She spoke of humility and gratitude.
She spoke of hard work.
The right wing gives us a spoiled and heartless creature shaped by the rigours of indolence and unencumbered by mere compassion.
The right wing meme about her currently is that she is fat.
There is a lot of work to do.

re: #133 ElCapitanAmerica
I'll probably get voted down for this, but the amount of abortion talk at this convention is going a bit overboard and puts the candidacy at risk more than anything. I guess this is to energize the base? If you are pro-choice you're going to already vote for the Dems, if you're pro-life you are going to compromise because you might be more attracted to the obvious economic benefits of this administration.
However the emphasis on abortion, given the economic state of the country and the threat to healthcare in general (ie: repealing "Obamacare") are issues that I think are being put in jeopardy because of this.
Do you read the Wall Street Journal?

Will Democrats turn opportunity into disaster?

Ha, that was my one guarantee going into yesterday that the DNC would for sure have better music. I went to Bill Clinton's inagarual with my Dad. He's said it was one of the best collection of musical performers. Remember it was a Republican secretary of the interior, James Watt that thought the Beach Boys should be barred from playing. Yeah, not exactly fair to his boss because Reagan told Watt he was nuts.

Yah, but its not abortion. It's women's basic health care. I do not doubt. They've so well painted anything about a woman to be about abortion. Really, the GOP is saying Woman = abortion. It's horrific.
Then they went after birth control. Their agenda isn't abortion alone, and we will fight.
No fear.
Yeah, it's going to be a crazy close close election. Our country is very divided. Equally.

re: #155 Lidane
The people who consider abortion a high priority issue are going to vote Romney anyway, since they're going to be the rabid pro-life types.
The Democrats are correct in talking about women's health issues and about healthcare, including abortion. But what I've seen so far is more about equity, such as the line about being a woman no longer being a pre-existing condition, and about giving women empowerment with respect to their healthcare coverage. I haven't seen any speakers so far talking about abortion as much as they have talked about women deciding what is right for themselves.
I'm watching the PBS coverage of the convention and they just had an interview with Julian Castro. They asked him about this in much the same way that ElCap has, being all "concerned" about how much they've been talking about it. David Brooks whined about how this was supposed to be the night for talking about economics and Castro laughed and promised they'd get to it.
I was screaming at the TV about then. For women, there are few economic issues more important to us that our right to reproductive choice. Nowhere are politics more personal and more determinant of our futures both personally and economically. Our right to choose, our access to healthcare and birth control - these ARE essential economic issues.

They were booing because Villaraigosa rammed that vote through. Sounded like 50/50 to me. It was also unusual for the DNC to do this. Jeffrey Goldberg also makes a good point here:
And, by the way, the notion that the U.S. should move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem (which is what this dispute is ultimately about) is a flawed one. In a perfect world, the U.S. would move the embassy to a neighborhood of West Jerusalem that has been part of Israel since the state's founding, but it's not a perfect world, and the U.S. -- and Israel -- need Arab support on many different issues, including counterterrorism and Iran. Moving the embassy would cause an eruption in the Middle East, where people have been led to believe by propagandists that Jews have no right to Jerusalem, and no connection to Jerusalem. Again, in a perfect world, this wouldn't be so, but reality is what it is. Why the U.S. should waste political capital on an issue like this when there is so much actual work to be done is beyond me.

The Republican veep choice is a personhood supporter, and has specifically backed bills that define life as starting at conception, and got all "illegal is illegal" when the subject of prosecuting women seeking or obtaining abortion came up. The GOP platform wants a ban on abortion with no exceptions for health, rape, or incest. The GOP nominee is on record saying he'd be thrilled to sign a blanket ban on abortion.
I know I'm preaching to the choir for the most part on this board, but personhood and "life begins at conception" are problematic not just from a pro-choice perspective, but because the way the it defines human life means that a pregnant woman's health is not just the government's business, but that the woman is constantly under scrutiny of legal wrongdoing. There's even an issue--since the law defines life as starting at conception--that women suspected of having gotten an egg fertilized (such as a rape victim) is subject to scrutiny "for the sake of the 'child.'"
To implement personhood as-written (at least so far) absolutely requires restrictions on the rights of women. Most contraceptive options are out, since they prevent implantation. Planned Parenthood is defunded, with only a promisory note that equivalent services for low-income women will be provided somehow. And a trip to the OB/GYN nows incorporates the government wanting to know if you're pregnant...every time...as well as what your doctor is telling you and prescribing you. And if you end up with a dangerous pregnancy or pregnant while otherwise with a life-threatening (or damaging) condition, the government decides whether it's you or the baby.
That's what's at stake when the GOP says life begins at conception, or invokes Dredd Scott. That's why women's health and abortion are interlinked.

I'm thinking of not voting again. I'll check if Oregon is a swing state and see if I feel different but I might stay home election day.
Is 'president' the only thing on your ballot? No local issues, no state office candidates?

I had to laugh at a blurb a while back asking why Sandra was speaking the convention. I wanted to scream, "Because you didn't let her speak during the hearing in Congress"

Oh, noes! Moar fact checks
Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s false accusation of a misquote
The Pinocchio Test
Klein’s quote was exactly accurate, meaning Wasserman Schultz falsely accused the Examiner of misquoting her. The DNC chair earns Four Pinocchios.
That was pretty easy, I think we all figured that out earlier this morning.

on second thought I think we have some new marijuana "legalization" initiatives that might get my interest. The issue is kind of meaningless on the local level, it's going to require federal decriminalization.

I think on drug issues it will be status quo regardless of who's elected. If I have a quarrel with one of Obama's policies, this is one. It's not enough to vote against him but it's a small disappointment to be sure for me.

What if the popular vote is close nationally? It's virtually guaranteed to be. If Obama wins the electoral but loses the popular vote the right wingers will go absolute ape shit, a real potential exists there for sovereign citizen militia shenanigans, localized civil disorder and violence.
