Sandra Fluke will be speaking very soon, and here’s a second thread for the second day of the Democratic National Convention.

CARMAX!!

Um... er... why?

2 Killgore Trout  Wed, Sep 5, 2012 6:27:08pm

Car commercials? WTF is Car Max?

3 Major Tom  Wed, Sep 5, 2012 6:27:28pm

Because the political theater requires a show of business sympathy.

CARMAX!!

Um... er... why?

Soapy extra cleaning power of Ultralux Detergent gives me more time to campaign for Obama!

5 bratwurst  Wed, Sep 5, 2012 6:28:53pm

Made this mistake of tuning over to CNN only to see the fatuous phone hacker Piers Morgan blathering on. In one of the many articles written about the train wreck CNN has become, he was quoted as saying he's been asked to offer more of his opinions on air...as if anyone in the world is curious as to what is inside of that big empty head of his.

You can't vote for Obama in the dark. Use the Light-o-matic Liberal Lamp!

Maybe political campaigns ought to be like NASCAR, where all the sponsoring companies get to put their logos on the contestant?

14 OhNoZombies!  Wed, Sep 5, 2012 6:32:10pm

I think I need a break. Clinton comes on at 10:25.

Not a big deal but that Car Max commercial was something I haven't seen before in a political convention. Maybe it's always been around but I've never seen it presented so obviously before.

18 Charles Johnson  Wed, Sep 5, 2012 6:32:53pm

I have to wonder if all this stuff about small businesses is a response to the "YOU DIDN'T BUILD THAT" derp.

If so, it's a measure of how effective it can be to exploit the ignorance of the American public.

Indeed. That's why I switched to PBS, delighted that I could find an alternative. CNN shows very little of the convention and speeches and a whole lot of their gasbags commenting on what they won't let me hear. Very annoying.

Small businesses can't afford the devastating economic policies(Socialist) of another Obama(Liberal) term, KT. You seem to always stumble over the crack in the sidewalk known as context. Jog it out.

22 Shiplord Kirel  Wed, Sep 5, 2012 6:33:43pm

The Carmax guy's speech is crystal clear in both style and content. Easy to see how he took a moth-eaten and disreputable industry, used cars, and made it both respectable and profitable again.

That is of course convenient for you. No way I could just have a different opinion than you. I must be off balanced.

Am I wrong about Jimmy Carter? Was he a honoured speaker at this convention? Frankly you can find many Democrats that agree with his basic belief that Israel is occupying palestine, and that Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel.

Jimmy Carter left the White House over 30 years ago. Give it a fucking rest already.

He's a former Democratic POTUS. Of course he's going to be at the DNC. He was invited to attend and accepted. That's a far cry better than the GOP, who couldn't see fit to invite Dubya to their suckfest.

I was kind of hoping the Dems would stick with the positive pro-Obama stuff. Obama's original appeal was his 2004 speech at the Dem convention when the Dems were bitter and gloomy and negative. He stood out with a positive message which he also repeated in his 2008 campaign. This is an anti Mitt hate fest. I don't like Mitt either but this is just stupid.

--->

And, by the way, the notion that the U.S. should move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem (which is what this dispute is ultimately about) is a flawed one. In a perfect world, the U.S. would move the embassy to a neighborhood of West Jerusalem that has been part of Israel since the state's founding, but it's not a perfect world, and the U.S. -- and Israel -- need Arab support on many different issues, including counterterrorism and Iran. Moving the embassy would cause an eruption in the Middle East, where people have been led to believe by propagandists that Jews have no right to Jerusalem, and no connection to Jerusalem. Again, in a perfect world, this wouldn't be so, but reality is what it is. Why the U.S. should waste political capital on an issue like this when there is so much actual work to be done is beyond me.

Well.....whatever keeps some people happy I guess. Personally, neither Jerusalem nor "God" should be on the platform. First, Israel is not America. I don't see a platform confirming London as the capital of the UK or Beijing as the capital of China. Whatever another country's capital is, it is none of our business. Second, I am just sick and tired of the insidious influence of religion making its way in the center of US politics. It is time to knock it off. Religion has absolutely no place in ANY country's politics. That goes for ANY religion and ANY country.

WTF? Maybe Dim should try blaming Obama for Pearl Harbor too. It would make about as much sense. Oh, wait, my evil wingnut twin has found a way:

Like all liberal Democrats, Obama cites Franklin Delano Roosevelt as a role model and inspiration. This is the same FDR, liberal and tool of bankers, who provoked the Japanese by cutting off the scrap iron and oil they needed for their police action in China and who then denied our forces the intelligence they needed to prepare for attack. These machinations appealed to liberal cultists then, and they echo down the years, music to the ears of present day liberals like Obama. What future Pearl Harbors can our present generation of white people patriots expect from this scheming black guy usurper?

People under 40 barely remember Carter being POTUS at all, and no one under 30 would even know him outside of history class. Give it a fucking rest already.

Being scandalized by Carter is preferable to stopping and considering the Reagan sold weapons to Israel's enemy Iran...

...or contemplating that many current Republicans care about Israel because of their interpretation role in the Book of Revelations...

...or that Republicans like to hang out with pastors that view Jews as rightly hounded by God (Hagee, LaHaye), as well as John Birch Society members that perpetuate anti-Semitic canards about International Jewish banking cabals.

The booing was against the resolution to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and against the ruling of the chair that a roughly evenly split voice vote was a 2/3 majority in favor of that resolution. Here's a link with the feed from the convention. About half the convention boos recognizing Jerusalem as Israeli's capital.

Much thanks for posting the video. Although I generally support Israel, I see the capital in Jerusalem as some sort of weird campaign promise that candidates never adhere to once in office. However, there's some very funky shit going down in regards to Robert's Rules of Order in that video. I don;t know if this is a big deal or not but that motion and its passage doesn;t look right to me.

Nice.

You gonna call President Obama a mulatto next?

My whole point was, and is, that Warren is not Indian. Not half (which is how the no-longer-acceptable word you used meant, back when it was used, if the person had black and white ancestry), not 1/4, not 1/16, not 1/32. After that you're in trace element territory and everybody's an Indian.

As to Obama, I steer clear of antiquated and racially charged words. And why speak of "call"ing him anything? One of his parents was black, one was white. Everybody knows this, and so what? Lots of people have ancestry from here, there, and sundry parts. At the recent Olympics, we saw a lot of that on the medal stand.

re: #467 lostlakehiker

Why is this any sort of important point to make? The woman had a family legend, thought it was true, turns out not to be. She never used it in any way to benefit herself-- it was on her staff profile but not her application.

So it's a little weird when people become obsessed with this little matter of race. It's like getting pissed at Madeline Albright because she thought she wasn't Jewish, and then discovered that she was. Families get these things wrong sometimes. So fucking what?

re: #52 Buck

That is of course convenient for you. No way I could just have a different opinion than you. I must be off balanced.

Am I wrong about Jimmy Carter? Was he a honoured speaker at this convention? Frankly you can find many Democrats that agree with his basic belief that Israel is occupying palestine, and that Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel.

I agree with you about Carter & yes, half the delegates at that "vote" did show exactly what they thought (Or, at least, less than half were louder than more than half - it could have been that way, which is how it appeared at the first vote. To me, at least). I've seen it in the party & no, I don't like it (but I still vote Democratic because I am an AMERICAN, not an Israeli - but I digress!!).

BUT!!

Carter is a past American president. He has earned the right to speak at the convention. Yes, the Republicans don't feel they have to invite W - & that exposes them as liars when they still insist that he isn't' responsible for the financial mess we're all in today. But Democrats HAVE to be united - we are TERRIBLE at this. Accept it for what it is, but don't make any more of it that that, either.
