Video: President Bill Clinton’s Remarks at the 2012 Democratic National Convention

It was a rarity — a political speech that didn’t insult our intelligence, that took the time to make cogent, powerful arguments backed up with facts. It was a speech that treated Americans as adults with functioning brains, instead of easily manipulated children.

Bill Clinton knocked this one completely out of the park.

And don’t miss the Atlantic’s article on how Bill Clinton departed from his written remarks: What Bill Clinton Wrote vs. What Bill Clinton Said.

How impressive could it really be? He didn't even have a chair on stage.

An absolute master class on how to take your opponent to the woodshed.

The GOP wishes they had someone alive on their side who could have done this last week in Tampa. Epic win.

It was Clinton at his best.

I'm so pleased to see Clinton back in his element getting the respect he well deserves. His horn dog nature certainly did him some damage but THIS is what he should be remembered and applauded for.

I rmember Carville saying that when he first met Clinton he had that feeling of "so this is what major league pitching is like".

Why didn't George Bush give a speech at the RNC?

At least we don't see Dems booing gay US soldiers or applauding the deaths of people who don't have insurance.

Why didn't George Bush give a speech at the RNC?

"We don't know that name." Seriously, this is how good Clinton's speech was. He mentioned both Bushes and mentioned the work they've done with him outside of office and that was able to elicit applause. Really makes the Republicans who constantly harp about blaming Bush while of course at the same time talking about Jimmy Carter non stop look really silly.

Well, Clinton couldn't have made a tenth this speech without legitimate, reasoned, fact-based arguments behind it.

The GOP's argument bench is thinner than their speaker bench.

The man is 88. A slide at this age isn't unusual.

I think I saw a picture of him at a baseball game a month or three ago; he had to get to his seat in a wheelchair and with a helper.

42 HappyWarrior  Thu, Sep 6, 2012 10:44:52am

You know, there's another part of it to guys. Can't tell with W Bush because I really haven't seen him interviewed but I got the impression reading a Parade interview with Barbara and H.W Bush that they don't like the direction the Republican Party has been taking. Both of them are supporting Mitt but both of them had kind words to say about H.W's Democratic successors, Clinton and Obama both. Mrs. Bush she even sees a sort of fatherly son relationship between Clinton and her husband which is pretty neat all things considered because that 1992 campaign was pretty nasty with the attacks on Clinton.

Good piece at Balloon Juice:

Visions of the Apocalypse: Not in Fire, Nor in Ice, But in the Empyting Beds of a Nursing Home

The evisceration of Medicaid contemplated by the Ryan-Romney ticket and party is not simply a grotesque act of cruelty to people in their most urgent hours of need. It’s not just going to kill people. It’s not just crap economics, an enemy of prosperity on its face. (Short form argument here, for the sticklers among us: un- or under-treated illness sucks productive hours and capacity out of the economy. Think of it as a labor-supply sea-anchor, dragging us backward in any wind.)

No, or rather, more: gutting Medicaid, as Mistermix points out, radically constrains access to nursing home care for way too many Americans. And with that, you get the final step in the sequence of moves that the GOP hopes to make that will, taken together, finally transform the traditional American middle class (back) into an atomized and largely defenseless proletariat.
Why so apocalyptic?

Sad. We need to do a better job with scientific education in this country. To me, it's this simple. Evolution is a scientific theory and it belongs in a science class. Creation(Genesis) belongs in Bible study. If you want to teach your kid that in your own time fine but don't force it on me because you think your religion should be taught in school.

CLINTON: "Their campaign pollster said, 'We're not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers.' Now that is true. I couldn't have said it better myself — I just hope you remember that every time you see the ad."

THE FACTS: Clinton, who famously finger-wagged a denial on national television about his sexual relationship with intern Monica Lewinsky and was subsequently impeached in the House on a perjury charge, has had his own uncomfortable moments over telling the truth. "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky," Clinton told television viewers. Later, after he was forced to testify to a grand jury, Clinton said his statements were "legally accurate" but also allowed that he "misled people, including even my wife."

Creationism belongs in philosophy class, along with the rest of the religion. You want it in science class, then it should be included as part of the vast array of creation myths and it made clear by the science teacher that these are A) scientifically baseless and B) included only as a means of examining how primitive cultures made sense of the universe.

I know, right? I hear people say evolution is just a "theory" and they seriously think theory in that case means it in the other context. Reminds me, could language be part of the problem? Not sure what the words for theory in the one sense and the scientific sense are say in German, French, Spanish, etc. Kind of exaggerating since the British who speak English too accept Darwin's theories more than we do by a considerable margin.

Yep. You can't speak out against much of this either because either a) you will be accused of being intolerant or b) hurt somebody's feelings. Where else can you promote ignorance and get away with it. Not only get away with but have it promoted and protected by the same government that purports to be secular.

If thoughtful, interesting speeches like Bill Clinton's were more common, this could revive the mainstream media in this country. Hopefully more people would actually listen to and think about such speeches. This could be an antidote to our current culture of sound bites and misleading, out-of-context one-liners (e.g. "you didn't build that").

No, it has to do with a lack of basic education on what science is (and isnt) and how it works. We learned as early as the sixth grade that one starts with a hypothesis, if it is corroborated by facts, then it gets promoted to "theory" until a better one comes along.

I also had a very good history teacher who taught us about how to evaluate and work with original source materials, and an English teacher who explained the difference between the various literary genres.

These are all necessary prerequisites to being able to understand why Creationism or ID does not belong in any public school classroom.

Looks like Romney shot his load early (though Ann could have told us to expect that from him).

Caveats aside, there is a bit of history that Mitt Romney must concern himself with. Only three times in the modern era (1972, 1984, 1996) has a challenger not held the lead in the wake of their convention. Those challenging candidates went on to lose, and not by an insignificant margin.

Every cycle is different, of course, and I can't remember one where the race has been as relatively static as this one has been. But it would not be inaccurate, nor would it be unduly harsh, to suggest that, at this point, Mitt Romney is swimming against history.

...except the Bible is just a textual fetish; the "content" propounded by Dominionist, NAR, David Barton, et al. is just made up stuff with at best glancing read-a-line-and-don't-look at-passage references.

The push against critical thinking isn't just anti-science; it's rolling back the Reformation and the idea of the individual spiritual seeking. You're not supposed to read the Bible and find your own answers, you're supposed to read an annotated Bible (specifically the Scofield) and be told what the passages mean. This is the basis of Barton's career: he tells you what the Bible means, and when critics argue back he accuses them of persecution of deceit.

Charlotte Prayer Rally Repents for 'Homosexuality and its Agenda that is Attacking the Nation'
Submitted by Brian Tashman on Thu, 09/06/2012 - 12:45pm

David Benham organized a prayer rally in Charlotte to coincide with the opening of the Democratic National Convention called Charlotte 714, based on 2 Chronicles 7:14, along with groups like the North Carolina Values Coalition and Operation Save America, which is led by his father Flip Benham. While speaking to Janet Mefferd yesterday about the prayer rally, Benham said that Charlotte was chosen not only because it is the site of the DNC but also because the city was one of the few areas to vote against Amendment One, the same-sex marriage ban voters passed in May. Benham called Charlotte’s vote against anti-gay discrimination a sign of the “very desperate spiritual situation and moral situation in our country,” requiring “a citywide church service of repentance.” Later, Benham told Mefferd that America’s Christian majority must repent for tolerating abortion rights, no-fault divorce, legal pornography, “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” and the “demonic ideologies” that he says have taken over the education system....

Those people are fucked in the head.

...

In North Carolina you know we just fought for Amendment One which was a constitutional amendment that simply said, this is exactly what the amendment said is the only legal marriage in North Carolina was between a man and a woman. We received—it was such a battle in North Carolina it blew me away. I already knew in my heart as most all of us Christians in America know that we are in a very desperate spiritual situation and moral situation in our country but it really hit home during Amendment One, so much so that when Amendment One passed I realized the only three counties in North Carolina that actually voted against the amendment were Charlotte, Raleigh and Asheville, our three cities. So we had all the rural areas and all the suburban areas but we lost all the cities. So I felt like, OK it’s time that we have a citywide church service of repentance and that’s the reason that we decided to do it right in the heart of Charlotte the night before the DNC.

We will always finger point but we don’t realize that OK if 87% of Americans are Christians and yet we have abortion on demand; we have no-fault divorce; we have pornography and perversion; we have a homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation; we have adultery; we have all of the things; we even have allowed demonic ideologies to take our universities and our public school systems while the church sits silent and just builds big churches. We are so complacent, we are so apathetic and we are very hypocritical in the church, that’s why the Bible says judgment begins in the house of God. So when we prayed at 714 we asked God and our city to forgive us for allowing these things in the house of God.

Tonight seems like it's gonna be a hell of a night:

Barney Frank Likens Gay Republicans To ‘Uncle Tom’

CHARLOTTE — Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), who is openly gay, slammed LGBT Republicans Thursday for standing by their party even as it refuses to budge on gay rights.

Speaking at an LGBT caucus meeting at the Democratic convention Thursday morning, Frank singled out the Log Cabin Republicans in particular for praising Paul Ryan’s selection to the national ticket despite his opposition to marriage rights and his vote against repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

“I’m … inclined to think they’re called the Log Cabin Club because their role model is Uncle Tom,” Frank said to shocked murmurs from the packed crowd.

The Log Cabin, predictably, is responding to Frank's remarks by clinging to their own delusions:

In a statement responding to a similar comment Frank made earlier that day in a Huffington Post interview, the group accused Frank of undermining their efforts to remake the GOP.

“Frank calls us ‘Uncle Toms’ and pretends that Log Cabin hasn’t been on the front lines of the fight for equality,” executive director R. Clarke Cooper said. “The truth is, by speaking conservative to conservative about gay rights, Log Cabin Republicans are doing some of the hardest work in the movement, work that liberals like Barney are unwilling to do and couldn’t do if they tried.”

Frank is also slated to speak Thursday during the convention’s closing night.

Nor are these people big into investing in four-bedroom homes in suburbs with good schools, they invest their money in other things.

But it is the GOP's loss for insisting that these people are an abomination unto God and a threat to society.

Everything you need to know about these individuals is contained in this quote:

David Benham organized a prayer rally in Charlotte to coincide with the opening of the Democratic National Convention called Charlotte 714, based on 2 Chronicles 7:14, along with groups like the North Carolina Values Coalition and Operation Save America, which is led by his father Flip Benham.

For those of you who don't know, Operation Save America is simply the renamed version of the militant anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, renamed after Flip took over from Randall Terry. And yes, they still do support domestic terroristic acts against doctors and clinics.

Family Research Council Says Starbucks' Support for Marriage Equality Led to Billions in Losses

In a radio bulletin that either reveals a stunning level of ignorance or sheer insanity, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said that the National Organization for Marriage’s campaign to boycott Starbucks over its stance on gay rights called “Dump Starbucks”—which so far has collected fewer than 50,000 signers—is responsible for a $10 billion loss in profits. “Siding with radical homosexuals has its price in this country,” Perkins said. “And in Starbucks case, the cost is about ten billion dollars.”

That’s right, the FRC chief says that the company’s decision to endorse marriage equality in its home state led to its recent troubles, while providing no evidence as to how NOM and its fewer than 50,000 fellow boycotters contributed to Starbucks’ drop in stock value.

Protesters clash with evangelists and executives in Uptown

Before President Bill Clinton made a rousing two hour speech, protesters outside of the Democratic National Convention were stealing headlines.

For the fifth day straight, activists took to the streets of Uptown to voice their distrust and disappointment with the two party system and the corporations that support it. A few different rallies and protests were planned for the day by groups including Greenpeace and Occupy. But as most have been doing this week, activists from different groups joined each other in solidarity.

Greenpeace, Energy Action Coalition and other environmental activist groups met in front of Knight Theater, where Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers was speaking at an invite-only forum, to call on the Charlotte-based utility to drop all ties to right-wing legislative think-tank American Legislative Exchange Council.

...The march up and down Tryon Street was peaceful — as most in Charlotte have been this week and all summer. The only conflict that really arose was a humorous exchange at the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets between some protesters and an evangelist.

He had a lot to say to the “pot-smoking perverts” contained about 20 feet from him and the rest of the crowd by police.

“Don’t get mad at me boy I didn’t give you that haircut,” he told one protester with a mowhawk.

It wasn't a $10.2 billion loss in profits. It was the stock price sliding resulting in the market cap losing $10.2 billion because it lowered its targets. It went from $62 down to $48, but it's now trading at $51. The target for SBUX is 52. The 52 week low is $35.10. Financials are here.

[added: More to the point, the company hasn't lost money. It's the market cap that lost value since the company offered lower future expectations - and there are good reasons for the lowered guidance, particularly more competition and better options - like cheaper and better McDs, Tim Hortons, or DnD coffee).

Jim Rogers, Duke Energy CEO, Stands To Gain From DNC

WASHINGTON -- The Democratic National Convention is a pivotal event for President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign, his single biggest opportunity to recapture momentum among the party base and ensure the voter turnout in November that can push him over the top. But beyond the president, few people have as much riding on the convention’s success as Jim Rogers.

The chairman of Duke Energy, the nation’s largest electric power company, Rogers is also co-chairman of the convention’s nonprofit host committee, along with Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx. More than a year ago, Rogers set out to raise $37 million in donations to pay for the three-day event, including $7 million to renovate the stadium that will serve as the convention’s main venue and millions more to pay for the logistics of hosting more than 35,000 delegates, journalists, activists and other conventioneers who are expected to descend on Charlotte.

Duke Energy has donated about 50,000 square feet of office space downtown for the convention staff to use as its headquarters. Thomas Williams, a Duke Energy spokesman, said Rogers has raised $10 million or $11 million for the convention from private donors. Rogers declined to be interviewed for this article.

If the convention goes off without a hitch, it would go far to solidify Rogers’ position within the ranks of the political elite -- and help him leapfrog onto the shortlist of potential administration officials Obama could appoint in a second term. But if the convention is less than a success, Rogers stands to lose on a number of fronts. It’s a tall order, but Rogers, 64, is already a larger-than-life persona in the typically staid utilities industry. ...

Nate's got PA and MI strongly going for Obama (90%+ likelihood of Obama win). Romney may be retrenching and trying to focus on where he's going to maximize his money to win votes. That he's doing so this early in the game indicates that he's realizing that his options to win in the EC are starting to thin.

The only real state where Nate sees a divergence between the nowcast and forecast is FL - Romney needs to win FL and it's currently leaning slightly towards Romney. Money spent there to win a state that could go his way makes more sense than spending on a state where he's more unlikely to win (MI) for instance.

Rogers rose to national prominence in 2005 when he took the wildly unusual step for an energy company CEO of not opposing the cap-and-trade proposals that environmental groups and Democrats introduced in Congress. Those proposals allowed the government to set a limit on the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere, and let companies use, sell or trade a set amount of carbon credits.

At the same time, Rogers, who was a climate-change skeptic, also was beginning to consider the possibility that global warming was real, according to the Electric Daily, a utility-industry trade publication.

Since then, Rogers has evolved into a carbon-capping evangelist, while running a company that last year produced more than 93,000 tons of carbon dioxide, earning the dubious distinction of being among the country’s top five biggest pollution-spewing energy companies. The New York Times dubbed Rogers the “Green Coal Baron.”

Environmentalists have labeled Rogers a hypocrite. But people who work with him describe him as a pragmatic visionary in a highly regulated industry, where stability is often prized over change.

re: #248 JamesWI

What President Clinton said in reference to Presidents GHW Bush and GW Bush:

When I was a governor, I worked with President Reagan and his White House on the first round of welfare reform and with President George H.W. Bush on national education goals.

(Cheers, applause.) I’m actually very grateful to — if you saw from the film what I do today, I have to be grateful, and you should be, too — that President George W. Bush supported PEPFAR. It saved the lives of millions of people in poor countries. (Cheers, applause.)

And I have been honored to work with both Presidents Bush on natural disasters in the aftermath of the South Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the horrible earthquake in Haiti. Through my foundation, both in America and around the world, I’m working all the time with Democrats, Republicans and independents. Sometimes I couldn’t tell you for the life who I’m working with because we focus on solving problems and seizing opportunities and not fighting all the time. (Cheers, applause.)

(snip)

And this is important, they convinced me they were honorable people who believed what they said and they’re going to keep every commitment they’ve made. We just got to make sure the American people know what those commitments are — (cheers, applause) — because in order to look like an acceptable, reasonable, moderate alternative to President Obama, they just didn’t say very much about the ideas they’ve offered over the last two years.

They couldn’t because they want to the same old policies that got us in trouble in the first place. They want to cut taxes for high- income Americans, even more than President Bush did. They want to get rid of those pesky financial regulations designed to prevent another crash and prohibit future bailouts. They want to actually increase defense spending over a decade $2 trillion more than the Pentagon has requested without saying what they’ll spend it on. And they want to make enormous cuts in the rest of the budget, especially programs that help the middle class and poor children.

As another president once said, there they go again.

(Laughter, cheers, applause.)

So, Clinton showed that the current crop of GOPers and Romney's campaign is far more extreme than GWB's tax plan, and actually painted him and his father in a positive light for their education and humanitarian efforts. That compares with no mentions from the GOP, who was busy trying to distance themselves from the Bush family as much as possible (other than a rebuke from Jeb).

Putin floats his head over Palin's house to comment on Mitt Romney

President Vladimir Putin says Russia can work with Mitt Romney if he’s elected U.S. president, even though Romney has called Russia the United States’ “No. 1 geopolitical foe.”

In an interview broadcast today by the Kremlin-funded Russia Today TV channel, Putin spoke directly about the Republican challenger to President Barack Obama.

“We’ll work with whichever president is elected by the American people. But our effort will be only as efficient as our partners will want it to be,” Putin said.

That BUT is one big fuckin' but. Yeah, we can work with the asshole...we're adults. But Putin also says in the same article that Romney's hawkishness on the missile defense system is not something he looks forward to very much.

Garlow: At the risk of being misunderstood, I am going to say it this bluntly: we have 61 days of America left. I know that sounds melodramatic to some, it sounds alarmist, Chicken Little to some people. But we have 61 days. If we do not see a change at this time, America will be set on a trajectory that will make it unrecognizable in four years; it is almost that today.

We have 61 days of America left. If we do not turn at this point, America as we have known her will be forever gone. It is crisic that people vote, that they activate, that they become informed and they influence every other people they can regardless of how unreceptive people might be to them announcing where they stand on the issues. It is time for us to be unbelievably bold.

And thank you Tim and thank you Tony for what you men do. When historians record what turned America someday, your names are going to be there.

Steelworker Featured at DNC Didn’t Work for Bain

Oh jeez

But Foster, according to a former spokesman for GST Steel, never actually worked for the company.
“David Foster was never an employee of GST Steel’s Kansas City plant. He was employed by the United Steelworkers of America as their regional union director to represent GST Steel, but was not employed at our facility,” according to BC Huselton, who was head of HR at GST.
Instead, Foster was a union organizer, who negotiated for workers that did work for the company.
Foster explained in his remarks that he was an organizer during his dealings with GST Steel. But it is not clear from the remarks that he never worked for a company controlled by Bain.
Foster was prominently featured in an Obama campaign video, “Romney economics,” where he is identified as lead negotiator for workers at GST Steel. In the video he explains that Bain executives took bonuses even as the company flailed.

Here's the ultimate April Fools' Day joke for 2013: after being re-elected (hopefully), President Obama can go on TV or do a presser on April 1st, and announce that he's "re-discovered his Muslim faith", and recite Surah al-Fatiha.

At that point, watch every wingnut head explode across the land.

Then, he can say....."Gotcha. April Fools'!"

Of course, he won't do that, because it's insensitive to actual Muslims, who would be offended by it, and I really can't see him deliberately offending members of any religious faith.

But it'd still be one hell of a prank. But then again, I have a warped sense of humor.

Defunding Planned Parenthood Caused Women’s Services To Drop By 93 Percent In Tennessee County

Local officials decided that instead of giving that Title X money to Planned Parenthood for health screenings, STD tests, and birth control, they’d instead give it to Christ Community Health Services, a religious organization that refuses to provide abortions or refer women to others who would provide them. The organization also does not offer emergency contraception, and is reportedly looking to expand to create more “crisis pregnancy clinics” that offer “counselors who can discuss adoption and other life-affirming options” with women.

But it turns out that Christ Community Health Services has not been nearly as efficient at using Title X funds to provide family planning services, reports the Memphis Flyer (via Women’s Health News). Between July 2011 and June 2012, more than $500,000 of the $1.3 million grant the county received was not used at all. Hannah Sayle reports that Christ Community Health Services was averaging just 51 Title X visits per month in early 2012, compared to Planned Parenthood’s 841 visits in August 2011.

Yes, the secret service is required to investigate. Even if it's not a serious actionable threat or active plot.
