Right Wing Media Universally Declare DNC a Failure, Obama Speech a Flop

Living in their own weird world
Politics • Views: 24,698

If you only pay attention to right wing media, you probably came away with the conviction that the Republican convention was an unparalleled triumph, while the Democratic convention was a dismal failure. Seriously, folks — that’s what they are all shouting in unison today.

The Internet’s dumbest right wing blogger, Jim Hoft, leads the way with a mind-numbingly stupid post: DNC 2012 Recap: Clint Eastwood Was Right. Hoft doesn’t actually say what Eastwood was “right” about, of course.

But here’s a collection of newspapers from swing states that show how the DNC and Obama’s speech played in the real world, and surprise! It’s nothing like the disaster the wingnuts and beltway pundits are trying to imagine it was.

Damn liberal media, Virginian-Pilot. ;). But yeah saying the DNC was a flop doesn't make it so even if you say it a gazillion times and it doesn't make Eastwood and the chair any more surreal.

U.S. Payroll to Population Rate at 45.3% in August
Just over 45% of Americans aged 18 and older were employed full time for an employer in August, according to Gallup's new Payroll to Population measure. This reflects a steady uptick since Gallup began collecting employment data in 2010.

U.S. Consumer Spending Climbs Close to a Four-Year High
Americans' self-reported daily spending rose to an average of $77 in August, up from $73 in July, and the best August spending level recorded since 2008. It is also the highest average monthly spending since December 2008.

NOM Affiliated Pastor Says Obama Wants 'Dictatorial-Style' Rule and has 'Rejected' God

William Owens Jr., whose father William Owens works for the National Organization for Marriage and runs the right-wing Coalition of African-American Pastors, is out with a new article suggesting that President Obama is preparing for a dictatorship and may even be a Muslim. He charges that the “anti-American” Obama wants to “render America decrepit and ripe for a dictatorial-style second four-year term” and to do this the Democrats must do away with God: “The God of the Bible has been rejected by this party as they have welcomed the god of another. With a record increase of Muslims in attendance, the message is clear and President Obama has raised the stakes for the fight for America by throwing in all the chips.”

Owens Jr. also claimed that Obama, simply by personally endorsing marriage equality, intends to “pass laws that would threaten to jail and/or fine pastors who didn’t perform” same-sex nuptials because he “believes pastors to be homophobic and is committed to punishing such thoughts by law” and wants to “destroy the family – by doing away with it.”

“The trajectory of Obama is leading to a tragedy of untold proportions and in less than 60 days,” he writes, “if we don't remove him, I'm afraid that tragedy is set for America.”

I always thought that was hilarious. Paul Ryan reads the most anti-government novel and decides you know what I am going to make my career in this because government is awful! I loved last night how Obama's turned the old Reagan line about government on its head. "We don't think government is the solution to all of our problems but we don't think it is the source of all our problems." It's a more nuanced statement than what Reagan said but damn it hit at the insanity of anti-government for the sake of being anti-government. Let's talk about the insanity of someone running for office while declaring that government can't solve your problems.

And the grifterism of running for office on the promise of writing government checks to newly "privatized" services, while providing no evidence (or even a model) of how that's supposed to control spending.

...because that's what's being sold. Government services proxied to for-profit industries, but miraculously those industries will only increase quality of service in spite of a profit motive (and no regulation) making less service more profitable.

As an atheist I get that 'you've rejected God' a lot.

I guess I've also rejected Thor, Odin, Loki, Santa, Beelzebub, Cthulhu and mostly the Tooth Fairy. I really hate the Tooth Fairy.

You rejected Cthulhu? You motherfucker....

Romney: Master of Projection:

"Now you might have expected the president of the United States to lay out a plan of what he would do to get the economy going again, and get people working again and he didn't do that last night," Romney continued. "Again, that was surprising to me. I laid out the things that I'm going to do to get this economy going."

Now Romney's claiming he's the one who's been laying out his plans for everyone to see?........Jesus Christ.......

He could have just ignored King since King's going to win re-election unless he has an Edwin Edwards- found in bed with a live boy or dead girl. Shows one that Romney is just fine with the bigots in his party and King is a big one.

Not so sure about that. RCP has this race as a toss up

Honest question: can you do such a thing preemptively? You'd think popular bands would have seen a pattern by now.

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think you can stop someone preemptively if they pay for the correct licenses. I'm not sure.

The military is a troop too, my friend.

Yeah! He's gonna... add jobs! And reduce the deficit!

These are apparently Solid Policy Ideas from the Wonks.

It's really not a stretch. Remember Mitt wants us to think HE not Obama is responsible for the auto industry's recovery even though he wrote Let it fail in the NYT. The man's a master of creating his own reality like where he thinks he'd actually be a good president for this country. The guy's been running for president longer than he's ever served in any elected office. That should tell you all you need to know about Mitt. That his ambition means more than the actual job.

96 Bulworth  Fri, Sep 7, 2012 1:16:11pm
Romney continued. "Again, that was surprising to me. I laid out the things that I'm going to do to get this economy going."

"Ok, well, I laid it out in secret with some corporate friends of mine. But we'll release the details sometime. Maybe."

re: #8 Charles Johnson

Reading the reactions to the DNC is like reading fiction. These people were watching an imaginary convention with imaginary speeches and imaginary audiences.

this goes along with the wingnut practice of citing figures or documents that contradict or disprove your position and declaring that they back you up, in full knowledge that your audience will never take the trouble to look themselves and find out that you are lying

reality is too hard to take for some people

re: #87 Kragar

Let Mitt know "The Military" does not mean "The Troops" any more than a company means the workers.

Yep. You don't have to play the Michelle Malkin "Outrageous Outrage" game to note that the man really does not seem to understand that concept, nor does he have the good sense to stop digging a hole deeper when he has fallen into one...

This quote:

When you give a speech you don't go through a laundry list, you talk about the things you think are important.

...is the sort of self inflicted wound that opposition reseach has wet dreams over. The only saving grace for him is that it is Friday and it may get buried over the weekend.

Maybe...

Jonah Goldberg actually tried to derp about that last night during Biden's speech:

'Honey Boo Boo' and Bill Clinton's DNC Speech Tie in Ratings

What a sad statement for America.

The only bright spot is that Honey Boo Boo got 3x the ratings as the RNC. If you can consider that a bright spot. I'm torn.

Give it a few weeks and he's going to say Obama stole all his ideas and that the policies laid out at the DNC were his! (as he thrashes about the ground, fists pounding sand, and crying)

Honest question: can you do such a thing preemptively? You'd think popular bands would have seen a pattern by now.

Here is the main problem. I am not sure if it applies in FOX case, but as far as the Romney campaign, they bought a blanket license. Legally they can use almost any music they want at their events. The artists can complain, but they don't have legal standing to make him stop...aside from the bad optics he receives when they complain.

The fact that as a progressive I'm defending a fundamentally similar plan developed by Heritage for health care and now am required to defend the Bowles commission as somehow progressive is disconcerting.

"If you only pay attention to right wing media, you probably came away with the conviction that the Republican convention was an unparalleled triumph, while the Democratic convention was a dismal failure."

Good thing I NEVER pay any attention to right wing media then. It's great living in the real world.

109 labman57  Fri, Sep 7, 2012 4:13:45pm

Remarkable contrast could be seen between the two conventions:

The DNC speeches were substantive, scholarly, and insightful, whereas the RNC speeches were laden with snark, superficiality, sanctimony, sophism ... and an empty chair.
