On 9/11 Anniversary, Dick Cheney Lies About Obama Taking ‘Sole Credit’ for Killing Bin Laden

A vile untruth
Politics • Views: 31,060

This is just a disgusting remark to make on September 11: Cheney Knocks Obama on Bin Laden, Intel Briefings.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney took aim at President Obama’s national security record in a late Monday statement.

“If President Obama were participating in his intelligence briefings on a regular basis then perhaps he would understand why people are so offended at his efforts to take sole credit for the killing of Osama bin Laden,” Cheney told the Daily Caller in a statement.

President Obama has never tried to “take sole credit” for the killing of Osama bin Laden. That’s nothing but a scurrilous low-class right wing lie.

Here’s what President Obama really said about who deserves the credit:

Tonight, we give thanks to the countless intelligence and counterterrorism professionals who’ve worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome. The American people do not see their work, nor know their names. But tonight, they feel the satisfaction of their work and the result of their pursuit of justice.

We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism, and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country. And they are part of a generation that has borne the heaviest share of the burden since that September day.

Finally, let me say to the families who lost loved ones on 9/11 that we have never forgotten your loss, nor wavered in our commitment to see that we do whatever it takes to prevent another attack on our shores.

And tonight, let us think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11. I know that it has, at times, frayed. Yet today’s achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people.

Never mind what Obama actually said. Deep down inside, Cheney knows he was really thinking "me, me, it's all about me." In fact, it's almost certain that that message was somehow subliminally encoded in Obama's statement that, on the surface, seems to give credit to everyone except Obama himself. I'm still working with my magic wingnut decoder ring to figure out exactly where. I'll get back to you on that.

O/t nut I just had to share this

Quote a FactChecker Earn a Ban

In the past we’ve had a policy of banning people who argue in bad faith. As Politifact, and the whole menagerie of “fact checking” organizations have demonstrated themselves to be slavishly attached to the Administration’s nether regions I will consider quoting any of them, in a non-ironic way, as being evidence of arguing in bad faith and worthy of a ban.

What do you think?

I have really come to dread this day each year because of the disgraceful attempts to use it for settling partisan scores. Last year being the tenth anniversary and on a Sunday, it seemed to be treated with more dignity...but this year just weeks before an election it is already worse than ever. Cheney, and everyone else slinging mud today, should be ashamed.

Romney Adviser Calls Foreign Policy A ‘Distraction’

The Romney campaign, however, doesn’t think national security is a winning issue for Obama.

Romney foreign policy advisor Robert O’Brien called the Obama campaign’s tactic a transparent ploy to distract from the sagging economy, including a recent jobs report that was “a disaster for them.”

“It doesn’t surprise me that they’re raising foreign policy because it’s another distraction from the Administration’s terrible economic record,” O’Brien told BuzzFeed. “They’re going from one shiny object to the next.”

Yes, the rest of the world is nothing but a distraction according to the Romney campaign.

He's mad because Obama got done what he and his boss couldn't, and he's making Cheney and his neocon buddies look every bit as incompetent as they are.

How dare Obama not be a weak sister? How dare he take away the one thing they would have campaigned on relentlessly?

re: #13 Kragar

It gets better. Yes Foreign Policy is a distraction which is why Romney will focus on it:

Romney, who aides say has downplayed national security in speeches and in the campaign to focus on the economy, will seek to repair any damage on Tuesday, the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, when he speaks to a crowd of 4,000 at the annual conference of the National Guard Association in Reno, Nev. What might have been a standard patriotic speech has become a more urgent mission to reset the national security debate for the last nine weeks of the campaign, aides said.

In FBI probe, Rep. David Rivera’s pal goes on lam, has computer seized

A key witness in a federal investigation involving U.S. Rep. David Rivera failed to show up for an interview with prosecutors and the FBI one day after agents raided her Miami apartment and removed her computer, cellphone and other items.

Ana Alliegro’s whereabouts are a mystery — even to her lawyer.

“I still have not heard from my client. I have no idea where she is,” attorney Mauricio Padilla said Saturday before noon. “I have not talked to Ana since Wednesday.”

Prosecutors believe Alliegro played a key role as a go-between for Rivera and a former Democratic congressional candidate who might have broken campaign finance laws in his failed bid against a rival of the Republican congressman in the Aug. 14 primary.

I thought the big thing in 2008 was that Obama didn't have any foreign policy chops. Guess that wasn't really important...

Barton: People Who Say the Constitution is Secular are Just 'Biblically Illiterate'

... Barton was giving a presentation at Northwoods Community Church in Illinois over the weekend and made the claim yet again, claiming that those who claim the Constitution doesn't quote the Bible are just biblically illiterate:

If you will take the Constitution in one hand and read its language and take a Bible in the other hand and read it, you'll say "wow, that's a direct quotation out of a Bible verse." Yeah, exactly. If you'll look through the Constitution, you'll find so many direct quotations right out of Bible verses because that's what they put in the document.

Now today we're often told, on no, the Constitution is a secular document, it's a godless document. When people tell me that, I know that they're biblically illiterate, they don't recognize Bible verses. If you read the content of that and you know the Bible, you'll say "hey, that's a direct quote our of Ezra 7:24 and there it is out of Deuteronomy 17:5." It's just throughout the Constitution.

It really is. What's happening on the university level is ghastly. Tenure tracks are slamming shut with universities now "employing" adjunct professors who are fortunate to make maybe $10K a year teaching a course here and there with, of course, zero benefits. And these are PhD level educators. Compare to the $200k+ coaches and we can see how much respect our real educators do NOT have today in the US.

Protesting a film allegedly being made in the US? No one actually cites the name of the film but it appears that FARS (Iran) is pushing the claim that Egyptian Coptic Christians are behind the film and fanning sectarian violence that will inevitably result from such claims.

Reuters couldn't seem to locate the film either, but noted that Terry Jones was supposedly holding "International Judge Mohammad Day" in Florida today in which it would symbolically put the Prophet on trial and play it out live over the Internet. That might be what they're protesting, but as with most kinds of protests across the Arab world, all it takes is a rumor for things to take hold, and no amount of debunking will stop things.

Barton also claims the idea for separation of powers came from Jeremiah 17:9:

The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse — who can understand it?

And the concept of the three branches of government came from Isaiah 33:22:

For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our ruler, the Lord is our king; he will save us.

And the idea for elections came from Exodus 18:21:

You should also look for able men among all the people, men who fear God, are trustworthy, and hate dishonest gain; set such men over them as officers over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.

Clearly, not a single one of Barton's claims holds up, nor does his claim that tax exemption for churches comes out of Ezra 7:24:

You are also to know that you have no authority to impose taxes, tribute or duty on any of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants or other workers at this house of God.

And that is primarily because the Constitution does not actually say anything about tax exemption for churches.

Nothing about tax exemptions? TAX THE FUCK OUT OF THEM!

God Damn It. Cheney just had to run his mouth TODAY and keep the hate going. This is the kind of crap that keeps people fighting among themselves. Pardon the expression, but this freaking dick measuring crap is a huge part of the problem we face. It's fine to point out and confront actual wrongdoing and bullshit. But it's not ok to keep the hatred fired up. It's not ok to MBF everything and to keep from taking responsibility for your own fuck ups. This is at the root of why shit isn't getting done and problems aren't being solved. We can't accomplish anything until we refuse to be divided anymore.

I'm tired of it. I take it personally, because it's been directed at me personally,in real life. It tore my family up,got us ostracized in our neighborhood, and I'm having a real hard time forgiving the right wing assholes who started it and keep stoking it.

At the Republican convention, Ann Romney tried to humanize her husband saying they knew poverty as students when they ate tuna fish and pasta all the time. In his column Richard Cohen skewers her and says she knows nothing of real poverty. Mitt was the son of an auto company CEO and Ann attended an elite prep school. Often the children of middle- or even upper-class families don't have so much money while they are in college, but the mere fact that they are in college separates them from people who are genuinely poor, have no education, no skills, and no chances to escape from poverty

adult americans with even a high school diploma is only 88%, and only 57% or so have "some college", with less than a third listing an actual bachelor's degree

Not only did Obama not take all the credit, he rightly credited his predecessors administrations as a partner in the efforts to get bin Laden:

Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, we've made great strides in that effort. We've disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense. In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin Laden and al Qaeda safe haven and support. And around the globe, we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al Qaeda terrorists, including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot.

The record needs to be set straight.

Here's the Movie That Egyptians Just Stormed the U.S. Embassy Over

Right now, protesters in Cairo are gathered at the U.S. embassy compound, where some have scaled the walls and pulled down the American flag, with which they've replaced a black flag bearing the prayer "There is no god but Allah and Mohammed is his messenger." They say they're protesting an American film that insults Prophet Mohammed. About half an hour in, someone took a photo that appears to show some of the protesters, of which Reuters estimates there to be 2,000, setting off celebratory fireworks.

The movie is called Mohammed Nabi al-Muslimin, or Mohammed, Prophet of the Muslims. If you've never heard of it, that's because the few clips circulating online are dubbed in Arabic. The above clip, which is allegedly from the film (I haven't been able to confirm this) is one of the only in English. That's also because it's allegedly produced by Florida Pastor Terry Jones (yes, the asshole who burnt the Koran despite Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates' pleas) and two Egyptians living in the U.S., according to Egyptian press accounts. The Egyptians are allegedly Coptic, the Christian minority that makes up about a tenth of Egypt.

President Bush has also addressed the issue.

Former President George W. Bush, whose entire presidency was defined by the September 11th attacks, said in a statement tonight that President Obama called him to inform him of the news of bin Laden’s death.

Bush called the operation a “momentous achievement” that “marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001.”

“I congratulated him and the men and women of our military and intelligence communities who devoted their lives to this mission. They have our everlasting gratitude,” the former president said in a statement. “The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done.”

Him meaning President Obama. Bush was quite gracious in his handling of the subject, including the trips to Ground Zero following the OBL raid.

The fanatics on both sides love each other for the synergy in pointing at the other side to prop up their broad brush claims that the other are evil and simply calling for their outright destruction. And then it is easy to use this for political advantage since refusing to support them in the face of this obvious hostility is unpatriotic/irreligious/whatever. And just ignore the prophet or whomever who promoted peaceful relations and tolerance in your holy script of choice.

There is the face and the spirit of today's GOP. Petty, small, ignorant and mean. Nice job. Dick.

Cheney is another one of the die-hard revanchists left over from the Watergate days who thinks Nixon should have told the congress to fuck off. He, Rumsfeld and their coterie (Addington, Yoo, Wolfowitz et al) remain at the core of why it is politcally impossible to have any bi-partisan agreement on foreign policy as well as even agreement on basic human notions of decency regarding torture.

Moreover, Cheney remains a stark reminder why it is impossible to ever consider criminal charges against people who tortured and even murdered POW's in Iraq and elsewhere. Cheney's simmering grudge from Watergate puts us on notice that any attempt to get into criminal matters from the Bush years will mean open political war. The next GOP president would respond with outright political prosecutions of every democrat they could find from the previous administration(kind of like what happened with Don Siegalman in Alabama and the firings of DOJ lawyers who investigated GOP favorites), and the neutrality of the DOJ would be about the same as a prosecuter in Zimbebwe under Mugabe. We would forced into a Constitutional crisis over political power, and Cheney's cabal has made it clear that anybody else in power is unacceptable to them...and they will pay any price necessary to claw back to the top.

I was wondering if it is people who don't *have* to work at all, ever.

Terry Jones wouldn't hide from a movie like this. Just went to his website and there's no mention of this. It's probably a rumor made up from the Egyptian version of the 700 Club perhaps?

There's this guy: [Link: thelede.blogs.nytimes.com...]

Okasha, the host of a popular television program who has been called “Egypt’s Glenn Beck,” because of his embrace of conspiratorial thinking and hatred of political Islam. Last month, Mr. Okasha insisted that the presidential election had been rigged at the behest of the U.S. to deny Ahmed Shafik, a former general who was Hosni Mubarak’s last prime minister, the victory he earned at the ballot box.

He has lots of money, TV/Film experience, and a lot of American ties. He's my first guess.

170 simoom  Tue, Sep 11, 2012 12:02:27pm

[Link: www.theatlantic.com...]

What exactly does the film say? It's still not clear, but it appears to compare Mohammed to a goat and Muslims, according to one translation, to "child-lovers." The New York Times' Liam Stack, offering some offhand translations of the scene shown above, called it a "doozy." The man in the scene says of his goat, "This is the first Muslim animal." He asks the goat if it likes girls; when it doesn't answer, he bursts into laughter and says, "He doesn't like girls," according to Stack.

The movie, like Terry Jones himself and his earlier Koran-burning stunt, have received attention far beyond their reach, which would be modest if not for obsessively outraged media. And yet, here the movie is, not just offending apparently significant numbers of people, but producing real-world damage. That damage is apparently limited to one American flag (CNN at one point reported that it had been torn, rumors continue to circulate that it was burned) and presumably the evenings of the U.S. embassy staff, but the U.S.-Egypt relationship is tense enough, and Muslim-Coptic mistrust has already produced scant but horrifying violence against the Christian minority. That doesn't mean this incident will become anything more than a bizarre moment of cross-cultural misunderstanding (the protesters seem to assume that, as in Egypt, movies must secure the state's approval), but that it could go so far is yet another reminder of the tensions just beneath the surface in Egypt.

171 Kragar  Tue, Sep 11, 2012 12:02:31pm

Biden says ‘malarkey.’ And another word meaning ‘malarkey.’

Vpotus was talking about having Shober and the other firefighters back to Washington and pointed to an aide. "He's going to call you, no bullshit," Vpotus said. Then noticing the pool, said, "I didn't know you guys were here." Turning back to Shober, he cleaned up the language. "This is no malarkey. You come to the White House. I'll buy you a beer."

I appreciate a VP who doesn't mind saying bullshit.

Yeah, in some urban areas you ened $1M a year to be able to live. D.C. that wouldn't be enough for a family of 4 to live a "comfortable" life. I think the concept is that the 1% live a few notches above *comfortable*.

Iran's currency falls to record low against dollar:

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's currency hit a record low against the U.S. dollar in street trading, the semiofficial Mehr news agency reported Sunday.

Mehr says the rial dropped nearly 7 percent in a single day, to 24,300 rials to the dollar. Street traders say the rial rose slightly later on Sunday to around 23,900 rials to the dollar.

The collapse of the currency is a sign of the effect of Western sanctions over Iran's nuclear program.

The press' job is to move papers, get eyeballs, etc.

Israeli media outlets are also vested in outcomes. They have their own narratives to push - Arutz Sheva, Ynet, Haaretz, Maariv. Each has their own reasons to highlight or diminish the importance of the "rift" between Bibi and Obama.

Is there a real split there? I don't think so.

Is there a genuine friendship between Obama and Bibi? No.

Can they work together? Yes. One doesn't have to be friends with other national leaders to get things accomplished, though it helps. The talk surrounding their relationship is politically motivated - potentially shifting voters away from Obama because he's not perceived as being sufficiently pro-Israel.

Do they have a genuine difference of opinion about what to do about Iran and any kind of timetable for action? Absolutely.

heh...it appears 4 in 10 bible belt people trust Mitt Romney less than that black guy...

Baptist, former Bush-voting Sheryl Harris out of Lynchburg, Virginia, remains convinced that President Obama is a secret Muslim. But, hot damn, she does not like that Romney fellow:

"Romney's going to help the upper class," said Harris, who earns $28,000 a year as activities director of a Lynchburg senior center. "He doesn't know everyday people, except maybe the person who cleans his house."

She'll vote for Obama, she said: "At least he wasn't brought up filthy rich."

And many apparently have interesting opinions of Mitt Romney's religion:

Several of those interviewed in Lynchburg were devotees of the TV series "Big Love" and "Sister Wives," about polygamous Mormon families. They were unaware that the Mormon Church long ago renounced polygamy.

"Mormons don't believe like we believe," said Dianna McCullough, a retired factory worker, as she tossed salad in a Tree of Life Ministries soup kitchen. "Like the wives -- Romney's probably got more than one."

It may not be helpful. But Bibi is a bully domestically and internationally and Obama needn't placate him. You don't let your ally bait you like this, and unfortunately I think Obama fell for it. He should have smacked him down publicly and then invited him to meet face to face. Obama on Iran is no different than Bush, Clinton etc... before him treated Iran. PM: World powers have no moral right to block us

Here's a little more background..
US-Israel Divisions Over Iran Boil Over

On Tuesday, diplomats told The Associated Press that the U.N. atomic agency has received new and significant intelligence over the past month that Iran has advanced its work on calculating the destructive power of an atomic warhead through a series of computer models within the past three years.

The diplomats who spoke to the AP said the information came from Israel, the United States and at least two other Western countries They demanded anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss classified information member countries make available to the IAEA.

The information could strengthen concerns that Iran has continued weapons work into the recent past â€" and may be continuing to do so. Because computer modeling work is normally accompanied by physical tests of the components that go into nuclear weapons, it would also buttress fears by the International Atomic Energy Agency that Tehran is advancing its weapons research on multiple fronts.
....
Israelis are astounded that Iran continues to be one of the leading oil producers, because exports have continued almost unabated to China, India and other points in Asia. Israel yearns for even tighter oil sanctions and a total boycott of Iran's central bank, crippling its ability to conduct trade.

It seems Iranians are running computer models for a weapon and they're still selling plenty of oil.

When not peddling birther myths, WorldNetDaily editor Joseph Farah has been warning of America’s imminent doom. To remember the September 11, 2001 attacks today, Farah pushed the work of a messianic rabbi who said that 9/11 represented divine judgment, and that the tornadoes that hit in Washington and New York last weekend were also signs of the ultimate “destruction of the nation.”

What about that is Truther stuff? Months after 9/11 Bush said that he didn't think about Bin Laden that much,6 months after he said we'd"smoke him out of his cave". The task force dedicated to finding that evil bastard was dissolved on Bush's watch. It's not that they caused 9/11,it's that they didn't dedicate nearly enough resources to getting the job done. They didn't take advantage of the resources this country had in the middle east to rid the world of that fucking lunatic. We have an awesome spy/security apparatus in place with thousands of assets all over the globe,it wasn't used to it's fullest extent when there was nothing stopping the Bush administration from doing so. You're being defensive when there's not a need for it.

Things are looking good for Romney:

"This is a gimme election, or at least it should be," said conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham on Monday. "If you can't beat Barack Obama with this record, then shut down the party. Shut it down. Start new, with new people."

Surprise, Surprise:
Romney gives two different accounts on what he was doing on 9/11

I was on the phone to Salt Lake City, doing a radio interview. The interviewer interrupted to say there were reports that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I hung up and turned on the small TV in the office. Romney's book.

Someone rushed into our office and said a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I turned the small TV on desk there and watched in shock as flames and smoke erupted from the north tower. - Romney today

I'm guessing this new Kaiser study will end up getting cited in Pres. Obama's stump:
[Link: thehill.com...]

Repealing President Obama's healthcare law would raise seniors' costs as well as federal spending, the Kaiser Family Foundation said Monday.

The analysis bolsters Obama's argument on Medicare. He has said Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan's plan to repeal the healthcare law would increase seniors' costs immediately.

Kaiser noted that the Affordable Care Act lowered seniors' costs in several ways. Repealing it would therefore increase those costs. The law also makes several efforts to make the healthcare system more efficient.

"Repeal of the ACA would undo these changes, raise costs for beneficiaries, and increase federal spending at a time when the nation is struggling to address the deficit and debt," Kaiser's brief states.

If Congress repealed the healthcare law, seniors would pay more for Medicare benefits that cover hospitals, doctors' offices, prescription drugs and preventive services.

Mob sets fire to US consulate in Benghazi: witness

An armed mob has attacked the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi and set fire to the building, witnesses reported, in what they said was a protest at a film they said offended Islam.

A little earlier, Libya's deputy interior minister Wanis al-Shari, told AFP the crowd had attacked the building and that information was confirmed by the US embassy in the capital Tripoli.

On the phone TO Salt Lake City? So he was "in his office" NOT in Salt Lake City? I'm guessing that office had some kind of name plaque on the door like, "Mitt Romney, CEO of Bain"

Clashes at U.S. consulate in eastern Libyan city

BENGHAZI, Libya, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Armed gunmen and security forces clashed at the U.S. consulate office in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on Tuesday, a security official said.

"There are fierce clashes between the Libyan army and an armed militia outside the U.S. consulate," Abdel-Monen Al-Hurr, spokesman for Libya's Supreme Security Committee, said, adding that roads had been closed off and security forces were surrounding the building.

A U.S. embassy source said there had been "an attack" on the diplomatic office in Benghazi, but gave no further details.

RIPOLI, Libya (AP) — A Libyan Interior Ministry official says armed men have stormed the US consulate in east Libya's Benghazi and set it ablaze after a protest against a video deemed insulting to Islam's prophet, Muhammad, which was reportedly produced in America.

Witnesses say Tuesday's attack left much of the consulate burned. It came hours after ultraconservative Islamist demonstrators in Egypt climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo to protest the film.

Wanis al-Sharef, an interior ministry official in Benghazi, says the attackers stormed the consulate after firing in the air. He says nobody was in the consulate at the time.

I wonder who usually staffs that consulate. Locals? U.S. diplomats?

It's a conculate so it would usually be a mix of local staff and US diplomats. Not sure if they would have an MSG (Marine Security Guard) staff or not.
