In Which a Dim Awareness That He Really Screwed Up Begins to Dawn on Mitt Romney

The walk-back starts
Politics • Views: 32,944

It’s beginning to sink into Romney’s consciousness — accusing President Obama of sympathizing with terrorists who murdered a US ambassador may not have been the smartest thing he ever did, even if the Fox News-indoctrinated right wing base loved it.

Today at a campaign rally in Virginia, Romney refrained from repeating this vile and disgusting smear: Mitt Romney Tones Down Embassy Critique in Virginia.

FAIRFAX, Va. — Mitt Romney didn’t repeat his strong criticism of President Barack Obama over the response to protests at the U.S. embassies in Egypt and Libya at a campaign rally here Thursday.

He did note the death of four Americans, calling it “a tragedy to lose such a wonderful, wonderful ah, wonderful people,” as he was interrupted by protesters on site in this all-important swing state.

One protester, caught on camera by networks covering the event, shouted “Why are you politicizing Libya?” before being shouted down by the crowd, which began chanting “USA.” The protester was escorted out of the event.

“I would offer a moment of silence, but one gentleman doesn’t want to be silent — so we’re going to keep on going,” Romney said.

Mitt doesn't have it in him to actually apologize for crossing the line. Hell, it might humanize him. He might say something about how the tragedy had so enraged him that he'd lashed out, and that he hoped that the American people could understand and forgive his frustration in that time. That he'd learned from this experience.

But he has to pretend that he's perfection already. That's the Romney way.

He can't even take responsibility for his need to keep talking, he has to put the blame on a heckler.

On Nate Silver's model, if the election were held today, Romney would have an 8.4 percent chance of winning, compared with Obama's 91.6 percent. Romney's chances were 32.3 percent a week ago. That's not a decline; it's a free-fall.

I just can't believe he attacked our embassy itself for its statement. Most of those folks are career foreign officers. And even if they weren't, and most were politicos, they're Americans on foreign soil, who deserve some basic support and appreciation. Mitt's just a dick.

Boykin: FRC Didn't Kill the Shooter, So How Can it Be a Hate Group?

The most interesting revelation was when Boykin, along with Barton and co-host Rick Green, wondered how an organization like the Family Research Council could be classified as a hate group when, during last month's shooting at FRC headquarters, the building manager did not kill the shooter after he had disarmed him because God told him not to:

Boykin: Let me tell you a quick thing you may not even know; the day that the shooter came in here and shot our building manager who just happened to be sitting at the reception desk that day. The building manager, after being shot, wrestled him to the ground with one arm, took his pistol away from him, bleeding profusely and started to shoot him and he said to us "God told me not to kill that man."

Now I want you to think about that. We're the hate group but he said "God told me not to kill him." And he could have justifiably killed that guy right there that had just shot him.

...

Green: What a great response by that guy at FRC. I didn't realize ... man what a witness that he did the way that he responded.

Barton: The Lord said don't shoot him and we're the haters? Nobody would have said a thing if he had shot that guy that had just shot him and shattered his arm, he was under attack, self defense, he's got a perfect right, he's an officer, he can do that and the Lord says "hey, don't shoot that guy." And somehow we're the haters in this thing. How crazy is that?

Yeah, the fact they didn't execute a man after he was taken down totally proves what great guys they are.

Guy Pearce would be a good choice.

Don't get hung up on height. I always thought Danny Trejo must be like 7' tall from the movies he's been in. In reality, he's 5'6". The wonders of cinema.

I was thinking more about build as a whole though. Guy Pearce is awesome by the way in Lawless, the new film about bootleggers in Franklin County, Virginia.

He married a divorced woman. The slut-shaming she endured was so intense that it probably contributed to her early demise.

It did. And he never forgave his political enemies for what they said about Rachel. It's also why he defended Peggy Eaton so ferociously in the Eason affair.

I'd lay good money on Jackson, but wouldn't put it past TR to go all the way.

We're talking some serious badasses here, but why limit the weapon to holding a knife. If you have throwing knives, that could change things considerably in favor of some of the smaller presidents (by reach).

It would actually give another advantage to the early presidents since they had more experience in close-in fighting than 20th century presidents (bayonet charges, tomahawks, knives, etc. versus fighting from aircraft, boats, etc.)

Dutch anti-Europe, anti-Islam party of Geert Wilders slammed in national elections

(Associated Press) AMSTERDAM — While the winner of the Dutch national elections is not yet certain, the biggest loser appears certain to be Geert Wilders, the leader of the anti-Europe, anti-immigration Freedom Party.

Wilders, best known for his harsh anti-Islam rhetoric, gambled that the public sentiment in the Netherlands was sufficiently negative over the euro currency that he based his campaign on bashing the European Union.

According to exit polls, his party lost 11 seats in parliament, falling from 24 to 13.

“I would have rather stood here with good news, but the voter has spoken: we have lost badly,” he told supporters after exit poll results were released.

The mythical fight would supposedly occur during each president's prime and minus any illnesses other than ongoing chronic injuries/illnesses over lifetime.

That means that JFK would have the skill/ability/health of his pre PT-109 injuries. For someone like Lincoln or Washington, it would be when they were in their prime, not necessarily when they were in the White House.

If we go by health and condition and skills when in the WH that changes things drastically. It would give folks like GWB, Obama, and Clinton an advantage since they are younger and in better health than others, including Jackson though they haven't had the military/fighting experience of others.

TR would be formidable under any circumstances.

Wired: Anti-Islam Filmmaker Went by ‘P.J. Tobacco’ and 13 Other Names

He went by many names, the man who helped produce “The Innocence of Muslims,” the inflammatory video now roiling the Middle East: Matthew Nekola; Ahmed Hamdy; Amal Nada; Daniel K. Caresman; Kritbag Difrat; Sobhi Bushra; Robert Bacily; Nicola Bacily; Thomas J. Tanas; Erwin Salameh; Mark Basseley Youssef; Yousseff M. Basseley; Malid Ahlawi; even P.J. Tobacco.

But his real name — the one he used when he was sent to prison for bank fraud — was Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. His habit of adopting other identities earned him a 21-month sentence in federal prison. During 2008 and 2009, court documents reviewed by Danger Room (.pdf) and embedded below show that Nakoula again and again opened bank accounts with fake names and stolen social security numbers. Then Nakoula would deposit bogus checks into the new accounts and withdraw money before the checks bounced. The scheme worked for more than a year, until he was indicted in June of 2009.

The major American stock indices continued to climb on Thursday after the Federal Reserve’s FOMC issued its press release announcing that it would begin purchasing additional agency mortgage-backed securities at a pace of $40 billion per month and continue Operation Twist through the end of the year. It was announced that the federal funds rate would likely be kept at zero to 0.25 percent at least through mid-2015.

Saleem is using his phony story to claim that President Obama is likely a secret Muslim who wants to change the laws so “terrorism will be legal” and everyone will “be wearing [bigoted word]s” as part of his twenty year plan to bring about Sharia law. According to Saleem, Roe v. Wade is part of a plot to “bring Sharia law liberally in our face” and that U.S. currency in some parts of the country now reads “In Allah We Trust.” Along with the Obama administration and the judiciary, Saleem says radical Islamists have penetrated the education system, medical and banking industries, the church and the U.S. military, claiming that “many generals who swore to destroy the United States of America are generals in the United States” and that the hate crimes law and contraception mandate are part of a plan to instill Sharia law and to try and go about “legalizing terrorism.”

Heh just the guy Mitt needed to support his asshole behavior. An even greater asshole. Really though, I am amazed with how calm Obama is with these guys. They actually accuse him of hating America. Fucking bastards.

I'm no longer certain that Akin is a bigger asshole than Romney. Probably less-well informed, but maybe not a bigger asshole.

New York GOP State Senate Candidate Attacks Primary Opponent For Being Friendly With Gays

Hours before today’s primary elections, Republican state senate candidate Juan Reyes attacked his opponent New York City Councilman Eric Ulrich for being too friendly with the LGBT community.

“Ulrich and his wife became known as frequent dinner companions of an openly gay Democrat Councilman and his husband. No one cared about that,” the mailer stated (emphasis in the original). The pamphlet goes on to accuse Ulrich of such “liberal” misdeeds as hiring openly gay staff members and voting in favor of same-sex marriage while on the city council.

So virulently anti-gay was Reyes’ mailer that his own former boss, longtime ally to the LGBT community and former Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani, nixed his plans to remain neutral during the primaries and instead rushed to defend Ulrich in the Wall Street Journal:

GIULIANI: After seeing what his campaign has done, which is disgusting, Juan doesn’t belong in politics. I don’t know where he belongs, but he belongs someplace else… I find these attacks, the gay-bashing attacks, childish, silly, and a real indication you don’t belong in public service.

My total reality has been shattered...

Russia's Vladimir Putin admits wildlife stunts are staged

Although Putin's spokesman has previously revealed that at least one of the stunts was a set-up, Putin until now has appeared to play along with the exercises, allowing state media to present them as they seem rather than how they really are.

But in a rare meeting with a Kremlin critic after his latest wildlife stunt - taking to the skies in a light aircraft with a group of cranes last week - Putin admitted he had often taken part in media exercises which were carefully staged.

Poll: 54 Percent Blame Bush And GOP For Economic Woes

More than half of voters nationwide attribute the country's current economic problems to former President George W. Bush and Republicans as opposed to President Barack Obama and the Democrats, a new poll released Thursday shows.

The latest release from CNN shows that 54 percent of likely voters think Bush and his Republican colleagues are more to blame for the still-sluggish national economy, compared with 38 percent who blame Obama and the Democrats.

It should be noted that this is not a new trend. CNN has found that at least 50 percent of Americans pin the lion's share of the blame for nation's economic woes on Bush and the GOP dating back to September of 2010. Other polls have shown a similar pattern.

Lawsuit: Sheriff Arpaio’s Jail Denied Medicine To Diabetic Inmate, Causing her Death

The local ABC affiliate reports on the circumstances that led to Deborah Braillard’s death, after she was detained for a minor drug possession charge:

Witness[es] said that Deborah was constantly moaning and crying out in pain, asking for help, repeatedly vomiting, defecating on herself and having seizures.

“She would shake. Her body would stiffen up,” said Tamela Harper, an inmate in the jail with Braillard. “They never did anything to help her.”

Inmates said they begged officers to do something.

“They were telling everyone, ‘There’s nothing we can do about it. This is jail. Get over it,”’ Harper said.

Harper added that officers said Braillard was “kicking drugs” and that she was “getting what she deserved.”

Medical reports would later prove the guards were wrong.

Already God-Soaked Presidential Campaign About To Get Another Dose Of That Old-Time Religion

Americans weary of the amount of “God talk” in the presidential campaign had better brace themselves. We may be about to hear a lot more, warns Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

This weekend, Religious Right activists from across the country are gathering in Washington, D.C., to attend the annual “Values Voter Summit” sponsored by the Family Research Council (FRC) and allied groups. The confab is an effort to put the focus on social issues during a time when most voters say the economy is their number one concern.
....
This year, attendees will hear from GOP vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, several Republican senators and members of Congress, among others – despite the Summit’s sponsorship by organizations identified as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

It depends. If you mean "every president" in the condition they were in as president, then maybe. If it was every president as they were in their physical prime, then FDR would have the same issue as TR. Before he contracted polio he was 6'2", and even afterward his upper-body strength was very high. FDR in his prime would have been hellish to face with an edged weapon for the same reasons as TR: strong, smart, and utterly resolute.

Xubuntu 12.04/Chromium Version 22.0.1201.0 Ubuntu 12.04 (145644) though the system itself is an old Dell C640 1.8ghz P4M w/ 2 gb ram.

I see longer threads causing Firefox (and IE8 even moreso) to sort of hang up while updating and just have a spinning update icon for extended periods of time. I have to constantly reload the page once the comments get past 200 or so.

Work laptop has more issues than home laptop. Which makes me think some of the issue is network latency, proxy server, and security scanning not liking things and taking longer and longer to "clear" things to be viewed.

re: #250 William Barnett-Lewis

OT: But has anyone else noticed a significant slow down in reloading longer threads that have tweets embedded in them? My system just sits and spins sometimes waiting for a minute or three for responses from twitter.com (according to the status bar at least). I'm just curious if anyone else has such a slowdown or if it's simply my 10 year old Dell showing it's age. If the latter, I just need to learn to live with as it's going to be a long while before I can upgrade.

Yes. I get it on Chrome @ home but not (noticeably) Firefox @ work. It seems like a lot of time is spent waiting for things to load from twitter. My home machine is a 2-year-old Dell laptop running Windows 7.

Tony Perkins Tells Parents 'Don't Condone' Homosexuality: VIDEO

After speaking at the National Press Club yesterday, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins was asked whether or not he would disown one of his children if they came out. Calling the question a "gotcha question," Perkins claimed he would still love a gay child, but would tell them that their "lifestyle choice" damages them and society as a whole.

"If we [parents] really love them, we’ll be willing to tell them the truth that the choices that they have made, continuing what they’re doing, are both destructive to them personally and society as a whole,” Perkins said. "And so while I would disagree with my child getting involved in that lifestyle, I would not in any way — nor would I ever encourage a parent — to disown a child because of something like that that occurs. Love them compassionately, pray for them, but don’t condone and enable that behavior, whatever it might be."

He went on, as conservatives do, to compare being gay to being a drug addict, and threw in a little condescension in there, as well: "That’s not to say that those whose children may have ended up in homosexuality were not good parents. We can’t guarantee that. We can do our very best job as a parent and still something may happen, whether they end up in drugs or whether they end up in some other lifestyle that they end up."

There were 80,000 people there in different states of intoxication...it was a total buzz kill getting high with him.

If you tire of all atavistic thinkers who are fighting over their religious fantasies, here's a break (brought to us by the Templeton Foundation, ironically itself set up to modernize religion) - a look at why we H. sapiens succeeded in dominating the planet:

Why We Prevailed: Evolution and the Battle for Dominance

We once shared the planet with Neanderthals and other human species. Some of our relatives may have had tools, language and culture. Why did we thrive while they perished? Join evolutionary biologists, geneticists and anthropologists as they share profound insights about the origin of man and retrace our singular journey from fledgling prototype to the most dominant species on Earth.

Hour and a half long discussion at link. With some interesting music as a bonus in an intro video. (Some things in the intro video I disagree with.)

I agree. I would certainly not defend the use of addictive drugs like heroin, especially since it took the life of a guy I knew for almost 20 years. I was just telling D_F the image he has is wrong.

Pff, like we're supposed to trust a Major in the USMC over an anonymous blog post.

Not relevant to the particular thing you're talking about, but do keep in mind that it's possible to be both a high-ranking military officer and bat-shit crazy:

Albert Stubblebine

Albert "Bert" N. Stubblebine III is a retired Major General in the United States Army. He was the commanding general of the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command from 1981 to 1984, when he retired from the Army. He is also known for his interest in parapsychology.

Stubblebine appeared in the 2006 documentary "One Nation Under Siege"[2] in which he states, in relation to the attack on The Pentagon which took place on September 11, 2001: I look at the hole in The Pentagon, and I look at the size of an airplane that was supposed to have hit the Pentagon, and I said "The plane does not fit in that hole. So what did hit the Pentagon?"

A proponent of psychic warfare, Stubblebine was involved in a U.S. Military project to create "a breed of 'super soldier'" who would "have the ability to become invisible at will and to walk through walls". Stubblebine reportedly attempted to walk through walls himself, without success.[3] He features prominently in Jon Ronson's book The Men Who Stare at Goats.[6][7]

This sort of horribly dangerous silicone enhancement has been a big deal in the transgendered community for some time, and I have seen warnings about how these back shop operations (often in literally in the back rooms of nail stylist shops) use industrial silicone right out of a bucket and shoot it into your hips or breasts. From the article you linked, they did indeed give it a "Pants-on-Fire" rating.

This is a theme for Romney: He has long accused Obama of apologizing for America, starting in 2010, when Romney published No Apology: The Case for American Greatness. Since then, he has repeatedly criticized what he has called an "apology tour" by Obama shortly after he took office. PolitiFact has examined those speeches, consulted experts on speechmaking and apologies, and rated Romney's claim Pants on Fire.
