Who’s Who at the Values Voter Summit 2012

Right Wing Watch takes a look at this weekend’s Values Voter Summit, the annual meeting of some of the right wing’s craziest elements — Birthers, bigots, homophobes, conspiracy theorists, Dominionists, and a host of miscellaneous fundamentalist fanatics: Who’s Who at the Values Voter Summit 2012.

Tony Perkins

Tony Perkins is president of the Family Research Council, the main organizer of this weekend’s summit. Perkins leads the group’s efforts against gay rights, abortion rights and church/state separation.

The FRC has one of the most anti-gay platforms of any major political organization, including expressions of support for the criminalization of homosexuality in the U.S. and abroad in countries law Malawi and Uganda. Senior fellow Peter Sprigg said he would “much prefer to export homosexuals from the United States than to import them into the United States because we believe homosexuality is destructive to society.”

Perkins himself frequently reflects the extreme views of his organization. He:

  • said Islam is “evil”;
  • attacked the media for dismissing conspiracies about Obama’s birth certificate;
  • demanded Christians who voted for Obama “repent” since he has a “disdain for Christianity”;
  • linked homosexuality to pedophilia and compared it to alcoholism;
  • warned, “I don’t know if the country can survive ” another Obama term and that the president’s reelection would ” destroy this country.”
  • called gay rights activists “intolerant,” “hateful,” “vile,” “spiteful” and “pawns” of Satan and said that homosexuality is “man shaking his fist in the face of God”;
  • denounced hate crimes laws for promoting “chaos” and leading to the “indoctrination of our children in schools and the loss of religious freedom and the freedom of speech”;
  • wrote that the anti-bullying “It Gets Better Project” is “immoral,” “disgusting,” and promotes “perversion”;
  • denied that there was a correlation between anti-gay bullying and depression and suicide, saying instead that gay and lesbian teens know they are “abnormal” and “have a higher propensity to depression or suicide because of that internal conflict”;
  • wrote that senators would have “the blood of innocent soldiers on their hands” if they vote to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and allowed gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military;
  • insisted the government may introduce the “promotion of same-sex relations ” as a means of “population control”;

Following the deplorable and tragic shooting at the Family Research Council’s headquarters, Perkins has tried to blame the incident on everyone from the Southern Poverty Law Center to the Obama administration. The unconscionable shooting, however, should not be used as a way to conceal his organization’s virulent language targeting gays and lesbians.

That’s just the Tony Perkins section. Read the whole horrifying thing.

And by the way, one of the featured speakers this year: Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan.

RightWingWatch was far too kind to Tony Perkins in that article, in my mind.

They didn't even mention his ties to David Duke, or his multiple speeches to neo-Confederate groups like the League of the South and Council of Conservative Citizens.

Just heard a family member opine that we ought to be shooting people in Egypt because "that's what Russia or China would be doing."

For some reason I'm dreading Thanksgiving this year.

That's flu season ya know. Wouldn't want to go spread germs to the family.

Ah, the authoritarian mind.

I can't even wrap my head around it far enough to ask the question, you know?

"Um...so, because Russia or China may or may not indiscriminantly kill protestors outside their embassy in a similar situation means we should because why exactly?"

To complete its pedigree, SPLC also has Perkins' organization as a hate group.

Interesting story running on CNN right now.

They just released latest state polls for Ohio, Florida, and Virginia.

Obama is now leading in all three states on likely-voters polls, and well beyond the margin of error:
Ohio: 50-43 Obama
Florida: 49-44 Obama
Virginia: 49-44 Obama

All three virtually must win states for Romney.

Don' make no never-mind, mon.

Alabama Dems will be in Florida every week from now until election day on GOTV. It isn't enough to bury the Romney campaign--it needs a stake through its heart.

Seeing Paul Ryan being there should tell you all you need to know about Paul Ryan. Pond scum has more class.

16 BongCrodny  Thu, Sep 13, 2012 4:19:31pm

Yuck.

Vision America’s Rick Scarborough believes that AIDS is God’s punishment for homosexuality and that America is facing “sexual anarchy led by sodomites.” Scarborough joked on The Daily Show, “I’ve never turned my back on the gays, but that’s a different story.” He blames America’s supposed cultural decline on Jerry Seinfeld, Rachel Maddow and Bart Simpson...

If you're blaming Bart Simpson for America's cultural decline, perhaps that's something you should take up with Rupert Murdoch, hmmkay?

is there any doubt that Tony Perkins is probably gay?

It's usually the in the closet, self hating people, that are the most virulently against gay people.

(plus, y'know, it would be a total waste of time for Alabama Dems to think there's anything they can do in Alabama....)

New York Dems are working Pennsylvania. And I'd give odds the Illinois Dems are in Ohio.

It's very conflicting--can't decide whether we're carpetbaggers or scallywags.

election night penn and ohio will come in relatively early, since they are EST and CST

and if they go for obama that's all we'll need to know

Most of Florida's population is in EST.

florida is less decisive, though, and more swing-y

if obama doesn't take penn, or if romney doesn't take ohio, that's all she wrote either way

Florida is the backstop--it and any other swing state puts it away. Right now Nate Silver is projecting it at 67.6% for the Prez. Intend to make that real.

re: #24 Stanley Sea

She indeed did. But Ryan is supposed to show up there. Makes you wonder why Romney doesn't grace the meeting, doesn't it? Perhaps Catholics are less offensive to the venue than Mormons are, I suppose.

The problem with the Value Voters summit is that it is so horribly misnamed-what it should be called is the Christianist Crusade against the Constitution.

29 Patricia Kayden  Fri, Sep 14, 2012 3:40:25am

The only "value" these people promote is bigotry.

30 andydp  Fri, Sep 14, 2012 4:35:34am

Funky Chicken: Hey, just to be clear, I live in Oklahoma and am married to a military officer, and those aren't our values.

I'm a retired Army Officer and I never had those "values".

Jaunte and Bong: That quote is by Heddy er... make that, Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles...But it definetly fits here.

It's like the old saying, the bigger the homophobe, the bigger the homo.

And, please, I mean no offense to anyone.
