Mitt Romney to Millionaire Donors: 47% of Americans Are Lazy Shiftless Freeloaders

Mother Jones has it: SECRET VIDEO: Romney Tells Millionaire Donors What He REALLY Thinks of Obama Voters.

During a private fundraiser earlier this year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a small group of wealthy contributors what he truly thinks of all the voters who support President Barack Obama. He dismissed these Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, who don’t assume responsibility for their lives, and who think government should take care of them. Fielding a question from a donor about how he could triumph in November, Romney replied:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.

Romney went on: “[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

I work, I'm not on government assistance.

I don't pay income taxes. Why? I don't like owing the government money. Though I am married, I choose to have my employer withhold at the higher single rate to pretty much ensure I never have to pay up come tax time. Yes, I am in a lower bracket which helps but if I started making more money I would have no problem paying a reasonable share of that to the Government. I'm not one of these people that believes I should have an absolute right to every single penny I make.

I never get a massive tax refund, but what little I do get is always helpful.

But here's the thing, I may not pay income taxes but I do PAY TAXES.

I pay property taxes and school taxes and road taxes and sales taxes and gas taxes. There's no loopholes to get out of these. They must be paid.

And it is for that reason I will never consider myself a freeloader.

Every now and then, just when I start feeling sorry for Mitt Romney and thinking that maybe he has Aspergers or something, another episode comes along that reminds me of what a loathsome man he actually is.

I will not even comment on the other part of this same video where he tells his audience that he'd be doing better in the race if he'd been born in Mexico. I haven't decided if it was a birther joke, or just racist.

The man has NO idea about the greatness that is truly in the American people. I have seen no sign that he cares for, or even understands, his fellow citizens. He's lived his life too far above them.

He is who he is today because his breeding and his genes and his god have arranged him to be through a serious of immutable laws against which only a fool or The Help would presume to argue. He is what his golden life has made him to be, and his golden life was only the bare minimum of that to which god and nature entitled him. Romney is talking about people who pay all sorts of taxes, who work hard, and whose wages have been systematically suppressed for decades through globalization and union busting, a process which has made people like Romney obscenely wealthy. So yeah, the people who have exploited the system to drive their wealth up to levels unimagined in history ought to pay a little more in taxes so his fellow citizens can have a little security and their kids can have a chance to improve themselves. I like this idea. I pay a higher percentage than Mitt and that's every year, not just the one he cleaned up to show to us. My husband and I pay more in taxes than my Dad gets in Social Security. Theoretically very comfortable people making six figures of investment income with several kids, up to two separate one million dollar mortgages and gambling losses can pay zero taxes at the end of the year. My stepdad is in the top 1% and wiped out his entire tax bill one year with capital losses. The bottom 47% of tax payers in no way corresponds to the bottom 47% of income earners.

I noted in the Stevens thread that Romney has said his policies are intended to help 90 to 95% of the country, and he assured the interviewer that he would fix the safety net if there were holes in it.

There are plenty of reasons this travesty has been allowed to occur, including tax credits, deductions, exemptions, the earned income tax credit, and on and on and on…. Then you have, as Romney points out, the professional victims and the freeloaders who think the rest of us owe them something.

Moreover, who's paying the bills for the 47%? Those of us who do pay federal income taxes, who are not on the dole, and who do not fit into whatever behavior-box the government created that serves up the write-off goodies.

It's an absolute disgrace that this happens, and it's unfortunate Romney would choose to bring up this issue behind closed doors instead of every freakin' day on the campaign trail.

The media is gearing up to beat Romney senseless with these videos, but if I were him, I'd make my own campaign commercial using those numbers and point out how they've increased under President FailureTeleprompter.

I saw a BBC documentary called "Hitler's Children" which was about some of the offspring of prominent Nazi party figures. One of the people interviewed was the grandson of Rudolf Höss He spoke along very similar lines. He had what could only be called "survivor's guilt". Another man was the son of Hans Frank, who was Hitler's chief deputy in occupied Poland. He was grateful that his father had been executed before he was old enough to be poisoned by his father's ideas. Even though you know you bear no responsibility for what they did, having monsters in the family tree must be a heavy weight to carry.

Right. Obama's choice of words were poor, but he was talking about voters that the Democratic party should want to reach out to on economic issues, but had been losing on cultural issues. The embitterment he referred to was about these people getting screwed economically over many decades. His message wasn't screw those people, but that Democrats needed a better message to overcome the guns and religion stuff. He spoke much more artfully about it in an interview with Charlie Rose. Willard flat out says he doesn't care about low income people.

Does he realize that if you earned less than the deductible you have to file to get your withholding returned? If you earned more than $800 per month - $9500 per year - you are required to file.

I heard one person once speculate that he's angling for a gig on MSNBC or some other news network. Cynical? Yeah, but who knows?

I can't find where I posted numbers on this who pays taxes stuff some time ago, but in the simplest terms, easily verified via Google, 50% of American household owned 1.1% (that's one point one percent Mr. Romney, in case you have a problem with digits) of the nation's wealth.

The top 10% owned 75% of the wealth.

In most so called socialist countries the percentages of wealth owned to taxes paid is comparable. Only in the USA are the numbers what they are.

Read this Mr. Romney, please.

This is the key point you've elucidated. The bottom 47% pay no FEDERAL INCOME tax (as opposed to sales, gas, alcohol, tobacco, etc. taxes) for a very simple reason. They don't have the fucking money to begin with. They aren't moochers, they just don't have enough funds left over to contribute much of anything to the federal coffers.

If there's really any such thing as class warfare in America, this is it. And it comes from the right.

The methodology for this particular map is quite simple. For each state, the polling data listed for that state at Real Clear Politics is viewed, and when obviously skewed media polls are removed, the remaining credible polls are averaged. If that average shows Obama at 50.1 percent or better, that state is shaded blue for Obama. Any result below that for Obama, and the state is shaded red for Romney. This reflects just about all the undecided vote going to Romney by the time voters cast their ballots in the actual election.

As are the coal miners Romney likes to awkwardly thank for "their service."

As are most restaurant workers, retail clerks, domestic workers, and many farmers, teachers, bus drivers...the list goes on. He's not talking about a few lazy bums, but nearly half of the nation's workforce. How can such a man claim to represent all the people in the US?

Obama has one shot at making a deal with Congress. Part of the "fiscal cliff" is that the Bush Tax Cuts are set to expire. The GOP's only real priority is to keep marginal tax rates on the 1% low, so Obama should be willing to extend the Bush Tax cuts for a jobs bill, avoiding another debt ceiling crisis and long term deficit reduction.

Something else leapt out at me from Mitt Romney's statement, "“[M]y job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

Romney is not only saying that 47% of Americans are evil parasites, 100% committed to never changing their evil, crummy nature. Think about the "care for their lives" part of his statement. He's saying that 47% of Americans are so far gone that they can never be convinced to take care of their own lives.

This pretty much comes right out and says that 47% of Americans would be dead (!) if it weren't for the "job creators", the Ayn Rand supermen, the 0.001% (or whatever). The rest of us are not only parasites, moochers, welfare kings and queens etc., but we stubbornly refuse to expend the energy required to keep ourselves alive. Instead, we owe our very lives, every breath we take, to our superiors, to the supermen and women who actually produce things.

Don't mince words, Mitt; tell us how you really feel.
