Mitt Romney to Millionaire Donors: 47% of Americans Are Lazy Shiftless Freeloaders

Politics • Views: 28,906

Mother Jones has it: SECRET VIDEO: Romney Tells Millionaire Donors What He REALLY Thinks of Obama Voters.

During a private fundraiser earlier this year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a small group of wealthy contributors what he truly thinks of all the voters who support President Barack Obama. He dismissed these Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, who don’t assume responsibility for their lives, and who think government should take care of them. Fielding a question from a donor about how he could triumph in November, Romney replied:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.

Romney went on: “[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

I Can Never Predict
Free verse by Willard Mitt Romney

If it looks like I'm going to win
the markets will be happy

If it looks like the president's going to win
the markets should not be terribly happy

It depends of course which markets you're talking about
which types of commodities and so forth
but my own view is that if we win
on November 6th
there will be a great deal of optimism about the future of this country

We'll see capital come back
and we'll see—without actually doing anything—
we'll actually get a boost in the economy

If the president gets re-elected
I don't know what will happen
I can– I can never predict what the markets will do.

This could be incredibly damaging. It validates the worst criticisms of Romney's personality, that he's arrogant, elitist, and has contempt for those less fortunate than himself. He basically said half of the United States is composed of lazy, shiftless welfare-abusing good-for-nothings.

re: #4 Charles Johnson

The problem is, that categorization can be applied to most politicians. Congressional approval ratings are testimony to that.

What can be exploited is Romney's poor instincts and poor judgement.

That cannot be easily explained away.

I work, I'm not on government assistance.

I don't pay income taxes. Why? I don't like owing the government money. Though I am married, I choose to have my employer withhold at the higher single rate to pretty much ensure I never have to pay up come tax time. Yes, I am in a lower bracket which helps but if I started making more money I would have no problem paying a reasonable share of that to the Government. I'm not one of these people that believes I should have an absolute right to every single penny I make.

I never get a massive tax refund, but what little I do get is always helpful.

But here's the thing, I may not pay income taxes but I do PAY TAXES.

I pay property taxes and school taxes and road taxes and sales taxes and gas taxes. There's no loopholes to get out of these. They must be paid.

And it is for that reason I will never consider myself a freeloader.

Every now and then, just when I start feeling sorry for Mitt Romney and thinking that maybe he has Aspergers or something, another episode comes along that reminds me of what a loathsome man he actually is.

I will not even comment on the other part of this same video where he tells his audience that he'd be doing better in the race if he'd been born in Mexico. I haven't decided if it was a birther joke, or just racist.

The man has NO idea about the greatness that is truly in the American people. I have seen no sign that he cares for, or even understands, his fellow citizens. He's lived his life too far above them.

13 jaunte  Mon, Sep 17, 2012 4:14:03pm

Charles P. Pierce is having some fun today.

To this moment, I guarantee you, Romney is probably astonished at what all the fuss is about. This is simply the way the world is. There is himself, Willard Romney, and his perfect family, and his perfect life, and there is The Help, and The Help gets drunk on the job, and prunes the shrubbery badly, and pockets the silverware, and makes off with the odd can of salmon out of the pantry. He is who he is today because his breeding and his genes and his god have arranged him to be through a serious of immutable laws against which only a fool or The Help would presume to argue. He is what his golden life has made him to be, and his golden life was only the bare minimum of that to which god and nature entitled him. To ask him to doubt any of this is to ask him to doubt gravity or the movement of the tides.

Bingo. Romney is talking about people who pay all sorts of taxes, who work hard, and whose wages have been systematically suppressed for decades through globalization and union busting, a process which has made people like Romney obscenely wealthy. So yeah, the people who have exploited the system to drive their wealth up to levels unimagined in history ought to pay a little more in taxes so his fellow citizens can have a little security and their kids can have a chance to improve themselves. So go fuck yourself Mitt.

15 dragonath  Mon, Sep 17, 2012 4:20:02pm

The 47% number is based on a fallacy as well. A good chunk of that group are seniors, another bunch are working their asses off just to get by.

Sometimes I wonder if he is trying to lose on purpose. Being president means representing all, for the welfare of all. He's a candidate for special interests and single interest groups running to benefit those interests. Nothing more.

It always makes me feel good to know that I am contributing to taking care of him and others like him. In Mitt's eyes that makes me a sucker and unAmerican. And it makes my Dad a lazy free loader.

Yup, it's not just that his statement was offensive, it also was also incredibly stupid. There's a heck of a lot of white working class, military, elderly, etc, that are in the GOP base, that pay no net income taxes.

Unfortunately, many won't realize Romney is insulting/demeaning them as moochers, as this RW dog-whistle, where they claim half country doesn't contribute and leeches off the more productive folks, is incredibly well developed already. The more you listen to this video, the more you hear the nails going into the coffin (and who knew it was possible for Mitt to drive in the nails from inside his own coffin? It's like magic!). There are several entire passages about how he inherited nothing, earned it all "the old fashioned way," and the only silver spoon he was born with is the one we all have from being born in America.
Really. I'm not making that up.

Then there's the part about how in China, young girls are just dying to work long hours in the factories. And things would be a lot better here too if we weren't unionized.

And did we get to the part where he has campaign advisers who've been working for Bibi Netanyahu?

This is truly the campaign that was marinated inside the Fox bubble. They have been trying to hide this, which is why the campaign has until now seemed to have no message at all. Well, now it's got one. Congrats, Mitt!

Accurate assessment from Romney.

“...and in other news, water remains wet and the Sun will come up in the morning. Back to you, Biff.”

When did Mother Jones start writing campaign Ads for Romney?

Can’t disagree with anything Romney said there, except I think its more like 50 percent instead of 47 percent. Instead of saying this to private donors he needs to say this to EVERYONE because its true and this is what Obama wants, the more people reliant on Govt the more votes he will get.

He forgot the self-loathing white liberals.

Spot on. Romney told the truth - dog vs the fleas

Hopefully this is his conviction and not just blowing smoke towards the donors. Guess we will find out in October when the ad blitz hopefully starts. I am expecting some real doozies with all the ammunition Obama and democrats supply.

Romney stated absolute truth to lies and anyone can prove that EVERYTHING that Romney said about obama supporters is true. Romney left out one important fact. ALL obama SUPPORTERS ARE evil!

“He dismissed these Americans as freeloaders...”

OK, Mittens just gained a point. Didn’t think he had it in him.

Theoretically very comfortable people making six figures of investment income with several kids, up to two separate one million dollar mortgages and gambling losses can pay zero taxes at the end of the year. My stepdad is in the top 1% and wiped out his entire tax bill one year with capital losses. The bottom 47% of tax payers in no way corresponds to the bottom 47% of income earners.

Think about Romney's statement, “[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. They are, quite simply, evil, bad, crummy human beings. And the virtuous Mitt Romney is tired of supporting them, and tired of their lack of gratitude.

Have you read his piece over on the site? I won't link to it, but here's some quotes:

Well, gasp and egads.

FACT: 47% of tax-filers in this country pay no federal income tax.

That's not 47% of Americans, mind you; that's 47% of people who file federal income taxes.

That's not only a fact, it's a crime.

Why should anyone who qualifies to file a federal tax return get away with paying zero federal income taxes? Why should 47% of tax-filers have no investment whatsoever in their government?

There are plenty of reasons this travesty has been allowed to occur, including tax credits, deductions, exemptions, the earned income tax credit, and on and on and on…. Then you have, as Romney points out, the professional victims and the freeloaders who think the rest of us owe them something.

Moreover, who's paying the bills for the 47%? Those of us who do pay federal income taxes, who are not on the dole, and who do not fit into whatever behavior-box the government created that serves up the write-off goodies.

It's an absolute disgrace that this happens, and it's unfortunate Romney would choose to bring up this issue behind closed doors instead of every freakin' day on the campaign trail.

The media is gearing up to beat Romney senseless with these videos, but if I were him, I'd make my own campaign commercial using those numbers and point out how they've increased under President FailureTeleprompter.

Yep. They've actually convinced themselves that insulting half the country is a good campaign strategy.

In case anyone missed it, here's Ezra Klein's explanation of the 47%.

[...]

Part of the reason so many Americans don’t pay federal income taxes is that Republicans have passed a series of very large tax cuts that wiped out the income-tax liability for many Americans. That’s why, when you look at graphs of the percent of Americans who don’t pay income taxes, you see huge jumps after Ronald Reagan’s 1986 tax reform and George W. Bush’s 2001 and 2003 tax cuts. So whenever you hear that half of Americans don’t pay federal income taxes, remember: Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush helped build that.

I saw a BBC documentary called "Hitler's Children" which was about some of the offspring of prominent Nazi party figures. One of the people interviewed was the grandson of Rudolf Höss He spoke along very similar lines. He had what could only be called "survivor's guilt". Another man was the son of Hans Frank, who was Hitler's chief deputy in occupied Poland. He was grateful that his father had been executed before he was old enough to be poisoned by his father's ideas. Even though you know you bear no responsibility for what they did, having monsters in the family tree must be a heavy weight to carry.

Obama’s Romney Shot: ‘I’ve Actually Done My Own Taxes’

President Obama today sharpened a personal line of attack on his Republican rival, mocking Romney’s tax proposals and renewing a charge that he is an outsourcing “pioneer.”

“I’ve actually done my own taxes,” Obama said, showing a hint of disdain for Romney at a rally in Eden Park. “I don’t know about some of these other folks, but I’ve done them, you know… So I know we can make it more simple and more fair.”

The president blasted the Romney-Ryan tax plan as slanted toward upper-income earners, increasing burdens on the middle class and growing the federal deficit. “As President Clinton pointed out, there’s one thing missing from it: arithmetic. Arithmetic,” Obama said.

“They must have skipped math class when they were in school,” he quipped of his opponents. “And whenever you ask them to explain the plan, they won’t. They won’t say how they pay for $5 trillion in new tax cuts. They can’t tell you how they’re going to pay for it. And the truth is, they can’t pay for it without raising taxes on middle-class families.”

Right. Obama's choice of words were poor, but he was talking about voters that the Democratic party should want to reach out to on economic issues, but had been losing on cultural issues. The embitterment he referred to was about these people getting screwed economically over many decades. His message wasn't screw those people, but that Democrats needed a better message to overcome the guns and religion stuff. He spoke much more artfully about it in an interview with Charlie Rose. Willard flat out says he doesn't care about low income people.

One striking aspect of these leaked comments is the utterly callous, non-empathetic attitude exhibited by the Romney campaign regarding the plight of the socio-economically disenfranchised sector of American society as well as the inability to relate to the economic problems facing middle class Americans -- the TRUE middle classers, not Romney's middle class earner who brings in an annual salary of $250,000.

A peek into Mitt's psyche:

"I don't worry about the problems of poor people … because there is a "safety net" … which I want to defund … because people (including single, full-time moms) who depend upon financial assistance such as food stamps lack dignity … because you must be completely self-sufficient to have self-worth … unless you inherited vast wealth ... like I did … in which case you are inherently highly dignified … because you are a person of power and authority … who gets to enjoy the sheer pleasure of firing people … which I did countless times while running Bain Capital, creating huge profits … for myself and my fellow investors … at the expense of fired workers … who, as a result, often joined the growing ranks of poor people in America … which I don't worry about."

I just had an "aha moment". Now I know why Mitt won't show his tax returns - he obviously didn't pay any income taxes in at least one year and he would have a very difficult time explaining why he isn't one of the 47%.

And the morons will still vote for R&R, even tho' Ryan said they weren't smart and now we hear that Mitt thinks many of them are lazy, irresponsible leeches. That really goes to show you that Ryan, at least, knew what he was talking about.

The top 10% owned 75% of the wealth.

In most so called socialist countries the percentages of wealth owned to taxes paid is comparable. Only in the USA are the numbers what they are.

This could be incredibly damaging. It validates the worst criticisms of Romney's personality, that he's arrogant, elitist, and has contempt for those less fortunate than himself. He basically said half of the United States is composed of lazy, shiftless welfare-abusing good-for-nothings.

If I were with the president's campaign, I would at this moment be putting together video of those lazy, shiftless, welfare-abusing good-for-nothings, covered in coal dust still wearing their hardhats, working an assembly line somewhere, or in a sweatshop, or bussing a table--basically, pictures of those shiftless Americans who either are working themselves to death for their families, or living in desperate poverty--while all the while, Mitt Romney's voice would be playing in the background.

This is the key point you've elucidated. The bottom 47% pay no FEDERAL INCOME tax (as opposed to sales, gas, alcohol, tobacco, etc. taxes) for a very simple reason. They don't have the fucking money to begin with. They aren't moochers, they just don't have enough funds left over to contribute much of anything to the federal coffers.

295 JamesWI  Mon, Sep 17, 2012 6:33:29pm

LOL.....Jonah Goldberg actually, seriously, linked to this about 10 minutes ago.

The map above is an alternative analysis of the electoral vote standing for this presidential race done for QstarNews.com by the author of this article. The methodology for this particular map is quite simple. For each state, the polling data listed for that state at Real Clear Politics is viewed, and when obviously skewed media polls are removed, the remaining credible polls are averaged. If that average shows Obama at 50.1 percent or better, that state is shaded blue for Obama. Any result below that for Obama, and the state is shaded red for Romney. This reflects just about all the undecided vote going to Romney by the time voters cast their ballots in the actual election.

So, this guy gets rid of any polls he doesn't like. And no matter what the remaining polls actually say, if they don't have Obama with more than 50%, he gives it to Romney. Thus, he winds up with Romney winning all but 13 states.

This is how the wingnuts are still convinced they're winning. They just disregard any evidence to the contrary.

296 Mr. Crankypants  Mon, Sep 17, 2012 6:34:12pm

Class warfare should involve casualties on both sides, otherwise it's just a massacre. The 1% has had nearly no casualties from class warfare, while the 99% have lost jobs, homes and dignity.

Obama has one shot at making a deal with Congress. Part of the "fiscal cliff" is that the Bush Tax Cuts are set to expire. The GOP's only real priority is to keep marginal tax rates on the 1% low, so Obama should be willing to extend the Bush Tax cuts for a jobs bill, avoiding another debt ceiling crisis and long term deficit reduction.

Something else leapt out at me from Mitt Romney's statement, "“[M]y job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

Romney is not only saying that 47% of Americans are evil parasites, 100% committed to never changing their evil, crummy nature. Think about the "care for their lives" part of his statement. He's saying that 47% of Americans are so far gone that they can never be convinced to take care of their own lives.

This pretty much comes right out and says that 47% of Americans would be dead (!) if it weren't for the "job creators", the Ayn Rand supermen, the 0.001% (or whatever). The rest of us are not only parasites, moochers, welfare kings and queens etc., but we stubbornly refuse to expend the energy required to keep ourselves alive. Instead, we owe our very lives, every breath we take, to our superiors, to the supermen and women who actually produce things.

Don't mince words, Mitt; tell us how you really feel.
