Mary Matalin: Thanks To Romney, We Can Single Out ‘Parasites’
Conservative commentator Mary Matalin hailed Mitt Romney's "47 percent" line on CNN as good news for Republicans.
"There are makers and takers, there are producers and there are parasites," she said. "Americans can distinguish between those who have produced and paid in through no fault of their own and because of Obama's horrible polcies who cannot get a job or are underemployed. That's what the campaign is about."

Obama Leads By 5 Points In NBC/WSJ Poll
President Obama has a 5-point national lead in a new poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal. Obama leads Mitt Romney 50 percent to 45 percent among likely voters.
The president has been trending up after a successful Democratic convention and hisresponse to the attacks on American embassies in the Middle East.
Optimism on the economy, according to the pollsters, is the driving force behind Obama’s strong polling. The number of Americans who think the country is on the right track improved by 7 points, to 39 percent.
“Forty-two percent of voters also believe the economy will improve in the next 12 months, which is a 6-point jump from August, and a 15-point rise from July,” according to NBC’s FirstRead blog. “What’s more, 47 percent of registered voters approve of the president’s handling of the economy — up 3 points from last month. Obama’s overall job-approval rating stands at 50 percent for the first time since March.”
So, when does Team Romney begin telling us that the economy is a distraction?

Hello, human diary. It is I, Mitt Romney, your better.
Much has happened. The staff is currently locked in heated discussion as to whether or not to announce that I am suffering from a terrible episode of laryngitis, thus rendering me unable to speak until perhaps after the election. Eric F. feels this is too extreme, and perhaps we should say I have merely been drunk for the past few months, but am fine now. After an hour or so of this I fled the room, telling the staff to get back to me with their recommendations when they have some. That was some time ago, so there still seems to be no resolution.

I'm not sure where I heard about Mitt Romney's discussion about not doing anything and the economy will rebound simply because he was elected. I guess there's just too much going on at once for this nugget to get exposed too.
Romney says his mere presence will bring back the American economy
"My own view is that if we win on November 6th, there will be a great deal of optimism about the future of this country. We'll see capital come back and we'll see — without actually doing anything — we'll actually get a boost in the economy."

Remember this is the same man who got the same government to help him fund the Olympics and then he bragged about getting every last cent from the government. Really, as much as Romney's condescending attitude towards Obama voters bothers me and as much as I know that he's full of shit. It's the hypocrisy that bothers me. Mitt rags on people getting money and help from the government to help pay for college, medical expenses, etc but he had no problem using that same government to help him with his business ventures. Mitt's claiming now that he was talking about philosophy but the actual tape makes it clear he's talking about Obama's supporters. A couple things, Mitt isn't dumb. Surely he knows that a lot of his own party's support comes from voters who get help from the government. Sorry Mitt, you can't accuse the president of being out of touch and in cahoots with elites while you act like only Democratic voters get help from the government. Really, this man is so lucky he was born into the fortunate circumstances he was because I really think he'd be screwed if not for that and definitely not running for president a second time.

Unless you stand down, why, we're going to let off a dirty bomb." I mean this is where we have -- where America could be held up and blackmailed by Iran, by the mullahs, by crazy people. And the best retort from Romney surrogate Sununu is? Obama is like Pol Pot. Unless you're a history buff, Pol Pot isn't going to ring any bells.
Didn't Santorum just blather on about the educated and the elite not being on their side like it was a good thing? And now Obama = Pol Pot? How does that square when you consider who Pol Pot killed?

It’s time to admit the Romney campaign is an incompetent one. It’s not big, it’s not brave, it’s not thoughtfully tackling great issues. It’s always been too small for the moment. All the activists, party supporters and big donors should be pushing for change. People want to focus on who at the top is least constructive and most responsible. Fine, but Mitt Romney is no puppet: He chooses who to listen to. An intervention is in order. “Mitt, this isn’t working.”

The more I think about it, the more I believe that RMoney is a pretty damning composite of many of the famous rich white guys in TV and film.
He has the unbridled greed of Drysdale and Montgomery Burns, the patrician haughtyness of THIII and Smails, and the evilness of Widmore, MB, and Kane.
Frank Burns really doesn't belong in the list; one has to choose between the movie Burns (Robert Duvall) and the series Burns (Larry Linville). Neither one were rich and both were Midwestern types who were Bible-thumping Protestants; however, while Linville's Burns was mainly played for laughs, Duvall's Burns was much darker and sinister but was still not a good comparison for Romney.
The Nellie Olson comparison is interesting though...

I think what we have now is a crisis of legitimacy in the presidency. Really started in 2000 when Bush "stole" the election; continued in 2004, when Bush "tampered" with Ohio voting machines; then in 2008, when Obama the "non-citizen Muslim" was elected. During that time, the "not MY president" rhetoric has grown and grown.
If Obama wins, we'll just have 4 more years of the same garbage about him being a usurping terrorist sympathizing America hater. If Romney finds a way to prevail, we'll end up with a significant chunk of the country that feels he can't possibly be legitimate due to his clear contempt for nearly half of all Americans: "how can this guy represent me when he thinks I have no personal responsibility and don't care about my own life?" Not a pretty sight going forward.

re: #37 Charles Johnson
Rachel @maddow is right on the money about Romney's misunderstanding of "dirty bombs."
— Charles Johnson (@Lizardoid) September 19, 2012
FP article on that:
[Link: www.foreignpolicy.com...]
Governor Mitt Romney's description, caught on video, of what he considered the real nuclear threat from Iran has further undermined his national security credentials, showing a fundamental misunderstanding of nuclear threats. Iran's nuclear program has nothing to do with dirty bombs. Terrorists would not use uranium -- from Iran or anywhere else -- in a dirty bomb. It is unclear if Gov. Romney was just riffing, or if his advisors had fed him this line of attack. But it is dead wrong.
Nuclear bombs are serious business, and preventing their spread and their use against the United States is perhaps the paramount duty of the president, who, of course, is also responsible for any decision to use America's own arsenal. The main reason we are so concerned about Iran is that its uranium-enrichment facilities could produce the fissile material needed to make a nuclear bomb. Anyone running for the highest office in the land simply must know the basics about dirty bombs, nuclear weapons, and the threat from Iran. This video does not help Gov. Romney prove that he does.
...
The key here is that dirty bombs do not use fissile material. They do not use enriched uranium or plutonium -- the fissile material that Gov. Romney cites. The reason is simple: These materials, perhaps counterintuitively, are not radioactive enough. Their radioactive emissions don't travel far and are blocked by simple barriers, including skin and clothing. A dirty bomb would use small amounts of highly radioactive materials such as cesium or cobalt, not uranium.
