Let the early voting begin!

I just have one shoutout to all my Obama friends. Do Not Let This News Reduce Your Efforts.
Send some money. Talk him up. Beyond all of it get your vote in. Vote early if you have the option. Help anyone you may know that could have a hard time voting (no ride, registration issues, ID problems) get it done.

Genetic mutation may have allowed early humans to migrate throughout Africa, research says

A genetic mutation that occurred thousands of years ago might be the answer to how early humans were able to move from central Africa and across the continent in what has been called "the great expansion," according to new research from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

By analyzing genetic sequence variation patterns in different populations around the world, three teams of scientists from Wake Forest Baptist, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, demonstrated that a critical genetic variant arose in a key gene cluster on chromosome 11, known as the fatty acid desaturase cluster or FADS, more than 85,000 years ago. This variation would have allowed early humans to convert plant-based polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to brain PUFAs necessary for increased brain size, complexity and function. The FADS cluster plays a critical role in determining how effectively medium-chain PUFAs found in plants are converted to the long-chain PUFAs found in the brain.

"...Despite international sanctions on Assad, it doesn’t look like he’s running out of weapons. The Obama administration slapped a new round of penalties Wednesday on key parts of Assad’s deadly supply chain in Belarus and Iran. But the Iranians are hardly giving up on their Syrian proxy: New intelligence reports indicate they’re flying in weapons over Iraq, a charge that the Iraqis publicly deny. Sen. John Kerry, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, warned Iraq that acquiescence to the Iranian aid to Assad will jeopardize its U.S. aid, a disturbing coda to the Iraq war."

I'm glad they're considering cell phones because I think that's something worth considering. They did a poll in 1936 with only voters that had phones and they predicted Landon would beat FDR. That of course turned out to be way wrong. As more Americans get cell phones and use them more than their landlines, it's time to seriously weigh people being polled via cellular phone.

I don't take any of them literally either. Science seems to be finding that the force that sparks life is far more powerful than previously thought. Science thought life had to be a lot like what we could see or catch around us. Only in conditions similar to what we live in. Now with extremophiles and evidence of molecules like sugar and water out there in space we now know life can exist in places previously thought impossible. So IMHO, the thing that makes life start and pushes and pushes it to evolve is far more powerful that previously thought. Maybe that's pure accident of circumstance. Maye not.

Alf Landon was the kind of Republican they just don't have anymore.

After war broke out in Europe in 1939 Landon fought against isolationists such as America First who supported the Neutrality Act; he feared it would mislead Nazi Germany into thinking the United States was unwilling to fight. In 1941, however, he joined isolationists in arguing against lend-lease, although he did urge that Britain be given $5 billion outright instead. After the war, he backed the Marshall Plan, while opposing high domestic spending. After the communist revolution in China, he was one of the first to advocate recognition of Mao Zedong's communist government, and its admission to the United Nations, when this was still a very unpopular position among the leadership and followers of both major parties.
In 1961, he urged the U.S. to join the European Common Market. In November 1962, when he was asked to describe his political philosophy, Landon said: "I would say practical progressive, which means that the Republican party or any political party has got to recognize the problems of a growing and complex industrial civilization. And I don't think the Republican party is really wide awake to that." Later in the 1960s, Landon backed President Lyndon Johnson on Medicare and other Great Society programs.

He died on October 12,1987, at 100 years and 33 days of age.

U.S. Senator Warns Iraq Over Flights Into Syria
By JOHN H. CUSHMAN Jr.
Published: September 19, 2012

Excerpt:

The administration has been protesting for at least a month the resumption in July of flights that Iraq’s government has allowed to cross uninspected over Iraqi territory to Syria from Iran, in violation of international sanctions.

“If so many people have entreated the government to stop and that doesn’t seem to be having an impact,” Mr. Kerry said, “that sort of alarms me a little bit and seems to send a signal to me maybe we should make some of our assistance or some of our support contingent on some kind of appropriate response.”

He beat down the filthy commies vagina-havers.

Francoism professed a devotion to the traditional role of women in society, that is: loving child to her parents and brothers, faithful to her husband, residing with her family. Official propaganda confined her role to family care and motherhood. Immediately after the war, most progressive laws passed by the Republic aimed at equality between the sexes were made void. Women could not become judges, or testify in trial. They could not become university professors. Their affairs and economy had to be managed by their father or by their husbands. Even in the 1970s a woman fleeing from an abusive husband could be arrested and imprisoned for "abandoning the home" (abandono del hogar). Until the 1970s a woman could not have a bank account without a co-sign by her father or husband.[65] In the 1960s and 1970s the situation was somewhat relieved, but it was not until after Franco's death that a more egalitarian view of the sexes was adopted.

from mitt's secret tape: how republicans take advantage of the fact that people - even rich people - don't have a fucking clue what the meaning of the phrase "unfunded liability" is:

It's a front-page story: the headline once a year, it somehow escapes people's attention, and that is, if you take the total national debt and the unfunded liabilities of Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid, the amount of debt plus unfunded liabilities per household in America is $520,000. Per household.

an "unfunded liability" is a prediction of the shortfall for future financial obligations given predictions of income at the current rate

for some term of years in the future - it is not a figure for a debt due now

it has no meaning if you don't give the term of years in the future you are making the prediction for

which they never fucking do

Jobs corps work. Veterans are already under enough stress trying to readjust to civilian life after multiple deployments into war zones. Giving them a helping hand isn't a bad thing, and an additional resource would have been a good thing. For someone who claims to be pro-military, this is an interesting position for you to take.

THIS.

When I started grad school, there were 25 of us in our group. We graduated with 24. The one that dropped out was a war vet who'd just come back after multiple tours in Afghanistan.

He had a super hard time adjusting to civilian life again, even with the university and the VA working together to try and help him out. The school even offered to defer his admission for a year to give him time to work things out. Eventually, he dropped out and now he's got a small business with some friends and he seems happier and in a better place.

He's not the only vet who's in that position. A job corps that is specific to veterans and which would help them readjust to civilian life and run by people who know what they're going through would be amazing. It's a shame it got killed.

What I'm saying is that I think we could do that without a new federal agency. If the current systems are flawed, reform them. But don't just leave them in place and erect a new system right alongside them. Because I can say from work experience that duplication of functions is a recipe for serious problem with government.

Yeah, it's not easy. Combat vets get put through the wringer when they get back. I'm just glad that my friend seems to have found a better place for himself, but sadly a lot of vets don't. And if he hadn't had the VA and government programs to help him it would have been impossible.

A job corps specific to vets is something that we need to have. You can't send someone halfway around the world to fight on your behalf then expect them to walk the unemployment line or send out resumes on LinkedIn like everyone else. They need to readjust to civilian life, get any training they might need, get help with things like job interview skills, etc. It's definitely a valuable idea.

You're a couch warrior. Duplication of functions? What the fuck is that supposed to mean? You don't want to spend a little extra money to help those who put their lives on the line for your sorry ass? Fuck that shit. Fuck it hard. End of conversation.

Duplication of functions is what happens when you have multiple agencies trying to do the same thing with the same people or areas. I have as a result of my prior employment seen the mess such poor setups can leave. If the setup of agency function is not done right, then the agencies get in each other's way and the result is ineffectiveness and waste. And this isn't just at the federal level, this can also occur when state and federal agencies don't properly coordinate.

If agencies within the Department of Veteran's Affairs are failing in their mission to find jobs for veterans, then by all means overhaul or replace them. But don't do it by simply setting up a new agency, because it is liable to create more problems than it solves. Such an overhaul needs to be done with through and careful planning, and this one wasn't. Much of the fault for that lies at the door of Congress, for failing at its job of overseeing federal programs.

So while the job corps bill not passing is the outcome I favored, I am displeased with the outcome ever so. Because I know that more can and should be done. Members of Congress need to stop shouting slogans and do their damn jobs and voters need to insist that they do so. Oversight is sometimes tedious, and it is seldom 'sexy' but it is very necessary.

If agencies within the Department of Veteran's Affairs are failing in their mission to find jobs for veterans, then by all means overhaul or replace them. But don't do it by simply setting up a new agency, because it is liable to create more problems than it solves.

You really don't understand what you're talking about. The current Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service is only tasked with working with disabled veterans, not returning veterans in general:

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) VetSuccess Program is authorized by Congress under Title 38, Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 31. It is sometimes referred to as the Chapter 31 program. The VetSuccess program assists Veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs.

The proposed Veterans Jobs Corps Bill worked under the Department of Veteran's Affairs to give certain preferences to veterans in hiring that do not exist now. You should read it, it doesn't create a new agency per se, it directs currently existing agencies to cooperate in prioritizing the hiring of veterans and consideration of veterans for certain grants and contracts.

But whatever you think of me, don't imagine I don't care. Because selling events on military health gave me some insight into what's at stake. Maybe not as much insight as others here, but enough to make sure that I'm not going to stop caring.

I think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure that everybody's got a shot. How do we pool resources at the same time as we decentralize delivery systems in ways that both foster competition, can work in the marketplace, and can foster innovation at the local level and can be tailored to particular communities.

“We are going to look back at this as the week he got his act together, or the beginning of the end,” said a top Republican who works closely with the campaign.
The campaign is moving fast to calm nerves, especially among donors. To get a flavor of the challenge before them, a top donor said that after Romney spoke at a fundraising breakfast at the Hilton New York on Friday, a will-Mitt-win poll was taken at one table of 10 men, each of whom had paid at least $2,500 to attend, and some of whom had raised as much as $50,000 for the campaign. Thing I wonder about especially in light of today's vote is would today's Congressional Republicans oppose a GI Bill if one were proposed today like it was in 1945? I'd like somebody to publish an update on comparative donations from active duty military. I'm guessing that Obama is still just crushing Romney. From May of this year:

While the military traditionally votes for Republicans, President Obama is ahead of GOP rival Mitt Romney in contributions from military personnel, new campaign-finance reports indicate.

Obama has a more than 5-to-1 edge over Romney in political donations from individuals who list themselves as employees of the Defense Department or one of four military branches, a USA TODAY analysis of federal filings shows. Army employees are the biggest source of military contributions to each: $108,571 to Obama and $22,004 to Romney.

I love this news I really do.

*Flicks off pa system power*

I will vote, even though since I'm not in a swing state my vote won't matter. So in order to do something useful, I made a donation.

Then why do you support a candidate that supports and justifies defense spending on a percent-of-GDP basis, rather than a system-by-system basis?

That sounds rather like the opposite of procurement reform to me.

Obama was discussing the redistribution of government services. He wasn't talking about a Marxist takeover of America.

This latest recycled "redistribution" thing is just absolutely brain-dead. Nobody is taking it seriously.

And more important, Obama's back over a 75% chance of winning on election day after having slid down over the course of the week. It will be very interesting to see what happens as polls taken after the 47% video came out are reported.

Also--I may be missing something, but the chair of the WZO is Avraham Duvdevani. Lauder is the chair of the World Jewish Congress. I know there was some talk of merging them, but I think they're still separate organizations.

I wish someone had asked him about the 14th amendment citizenship issue. As I paged recently, there is a movement in the GOP to strip citizenship from children born here of undocumented immigrants. Its the only way that the GOP can continue to win elections as a white people's party in the future.

Yeah that would be a good question too. I brought up the medical issue because he specifically said he would consider a path to citizenship for those who serve in the military.

Yeah no kidding. My Dad, little younger than Mitt has talked about how fortunate he was not to be drafted. Other problem is as already pointed out that Mitt actually demonstrated in favor of the draft. I mean to do that and not enlist I think is a pretty cowardly thing to do to be brutally honest.I don't scorn guys like Bush and Quayle who served in the National Guard. That's still service.

But your #195 was a reply to my post, Palomino, not to a post put up by the GOP as a whole. So upon reading your post I felt that I was being attacked unfairly. You say you were not in fact going after me personally, and I'll accept that explanation. But that was not clear to me when I read your post.

I actually meant to reply to the commenter you replied to...my bad. I think I just responded to yours because it dealt with the issue that interested me, not necessarily because I was going after you.

Easy for him to say that. The guy intends to start 2 or 3 wars in the first year of office. Its a path to horror not citizenship.

In all seriousness, my experience has actually been that French people, when you are a tourist in France, are fine. French TOURISTS, elsewhere, I have found to sometimes be difficult. People complain about German tourists, but Germans are so gung-ho about following rules and exploring local customs, and eating new stuff, that they make, in my experience, great tourists. The French seem less flexible, and less able to adapt to "This is San Francisco. You can't smoke, and yes, that's clam chowder in a bread bowl." I may read too much into a few negative encounters.
