30,000 Pro-America Libyan Demonstrators Ransack Islamist Compound in Benghazi

An amazing story from Libya today, where pro-America protesters staged a huge demonstration, and stormed and ransacked the base of the main radical Islamist militia: Libyan Demonstrators Wreck Militia Compound in Benghazi.

Hundreds of Libyan protesters forced members of the main Salafist militia out of their base in the second city of Benghazi Friday, setting fire to and wrecking the military compound.

The assault came as an estimated 30,000 people rallied against the influence of the militias in the city, drowning out a protest by radical Salafists angry over a film and cartoons deemed offensive to Islam.

“No to armed formations” and “Yes to the Libya army” read banners raised by protesters gathered at the city’s Tibesti Hotel before marching to Al-Kish Square, close to the barracks of several militia brigades.

“Our law is God’s law, not the law of the jungle,” women chanted.

Banners also paid tribute to U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens, who was killed along with three Americans on September 11 in what the White House now calls a terrorist attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi.

“Libya lost a friend” and “We want justice for Stevens,” signs read.

This isn't about Romney or Obama. This is about Libyans taking their fate into their own hands and giving the Islamists the What For.

Granted that unlike Obama Mitt Romney would never take part in this sort of thing, but he's not the kind to take part in a street protest.

But of course not. Even during the early days of the Arab Spring, instead of speculation about how this might be a great sign and a vote in favor of allowing people self-determination, all we got was concern trolling about what losing dictators like Mubarak and Col. Mo would mean for the status quo.

Trouble for the haters is that the news is moving too fast for them.

Obama has obviously used his close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood to instigate an attack on a rival Islamist gang, which he can then use to blunt criticism of the apologetic, ineffectual foreign policy that was the real cause of the attacks on our embassies.

This is awesome. I really hope the people of Libya can get control of the radicals and bring forth the government they want for themselves. Really, that's the ONLY way to peace in any country, for the people to take their power back and run the radicals out of power. It's not easy and it certainly isn't a pretty process.

OT and FFS,the Atlanta ABC affiliate just covered this idiotic flag controversy. They did cover the fact that the GOP has used modified flag logos in many, many instances but did not confront the moronic GOP leader with her stupid"I'm just going to call him King Obama then" crap and how it's desecration on par with rioters in the middle east burning and stomping on the flag. They ended the segment with asking for "your thoughts on our Facebook page".

Yeah, I've been hearing that shit for days now. Indeed, ransacking can serve a constructive purpose, if for nothing else that resource denial. Destroy their encampment, their supplies, their means of continuing to terrorize the locals. But don't turn the violence against the people themselves. Make it clear that they are not welcome, but they will not be harmed if they leave.

I think it's kind of nervy to count your donations to support your Church (not charity programs run by the Church, but the Church itself) as "charity." Yes, they're tax deductible, but they're not "charity".

All the pundits are saying "Romney gave more than Obama", but that's not really true.

All I know is we paid about 36% of our income in all Federal taxes (payroll + income) combined. If you're not in the "money business" but just earn a good salary, have no kids or mortgage, there's nothing to deduct, and AMT wipes out any deductions for state tax (now at 11.5% and due to go up 3 points if the schoolteachers have their way.)

I think it's kind of nervy to count your donations to support your Church (not charity programs run by the Church, but the Church itself) as "charity." Yes, they're tax deductible, but they're not "charity"

Really? i was wondering if the tithing was included in his (some deferred till after the election - can you say amended return) "charity" figures.

What a racket. Church gets tax free and tithers write off tax free. BS

Girls beat up Iran cleric over dress code

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- They may be a far cry from their Western counterparts fighting for the acceptance to breast-feed -- or go topless -- in public, but two girls clobbered a cleric recently in a small town in Iran when he admonished one of them to cover herself more completely.

The cleric said he asked "politely," but the girl's angry reaction and some pugilistic double-teaming with her friend landed the holy man in the hospital, according to an account Monday in the semiofficial Mehr News Agency. [...]

Oh, aren't we lucky... :

James Murdoch set to run News Corp’s U.S. Fox TV business

James Murdoch is reportedly being lined up to run News Corporation’s Fox TV business in the US despite being sharply criticised by British broadcasting regulator Ofcom on Thursday.

The role being discussed would put him in charge of the Fox Networks Group, which includes the Fox terrestrial TV network as well as cable channels such as FX and National Geographic, says a report in the Financial Times.

[...]

On Thursday, Ofcom declared BSkyB “fit and proper” to own broadcast licences, but the regulator was highly critical of James Murdoch’s handling of the phone-hacking scandal.

It found that Murdoch’s conduct in relation to News Group Newspapers “repeatedly fell short of the conduct to be expected of a chief executive and chairman” and that his lack of action in relation to phone hacking was “difficult to comprehend and ill-judged”.

[...]

So Rupert uses the US as the dumping ground for his son to keep him away from the prying eyes of UK monitors.

Santorum had a contingent who were positively foamy in their admiration. Even Perry can rile the fundy masses, at least briefly. And Ron Paul, well, we won't even talk about him.

Romney is the first major candidate I can remember that nobody is especially passionate about. The base backs him as the lesser of two evils and because he is white. The establishment accepts him as the only tool in the box right now. Democrats think he is more a buffoon than a sinister Nixon-like figure. It is a triumph of banality and mediocrity.

All I can say is this protest in Libya shows the humanity that we all know is there. The RW tries so hard to dehumanize people. Every day, all the time (see: Morning LGF posts)

We, the Left are oft criticized for being blind, naive or whatever to not see the horror right in front of us (selectively chosen, of course)

I have always felt that what we see is people, and what the RW sees is their own fear.

This is the same guy who paid for the full page "Obama's Real Father" NY Post ad; seems he's direct mailing out a whole lot of DVDs:

[Link: www.buzzfeed.com...]

An anti-Obama movie claiming — without evidence — that President Barack Obama's real father is an obscure African-American communist has been mailed to 1.5 million voters across the country, its creator told BuzzFeed Friday.

A reader in Ohio emailed this photo of his free copy of the film Dreams From My Real Father, which claims that the Chicago activist Frank Marshall Davis is actually President Obama's father. He received it in the mail this week.

The film's director and producer, Joel Gilbert, said that the film had been sent out to more one million voters in Ohio; 200,000 after a mid-summer conference, and a million after that. He said that 50,000 copies had been sent to voters in Nevada and 100,000 to voters in New Hampshire.

"We're sending out bulk mailings to many states," Gilbert said. "Probably Illinois, New York, Florida, Arizona, Louisiana, we'll hit every state if we can to stimulate and force the national media to cover the story."

Gilbert declined to say how much his company, Highway 61 Entertainment, is spending to distribute the film for free, but said that the film was making a profit through online orders. He also wouldn't say how the company is funded and how they come up with the money to distribute so many free disks, saying "We’re a private media company, a journalistic company that’s privately held and we don’t disclose the nature or makeup of our finances."

It'll be interesting to see if I get one, as I'm in one of the targeted swing states. This sort of thing gets into similar territory as the nasty smears against John McCain in the 2000 SC GOP primary -- just on a larger scale.

Mean people DO suck, but we understand that people are gonna be upset & angry because we are too. But still, it's the guilt by association thing that's such a bitch.

Even if people don't mean it that way, it's too easy to feel like they do because you know that even though they may logically understand it's not your fault, it still reflects on you somehow, so when they start saying ugly stuff it's hard not to take it personally. I mean it's emotion, not reason, so by definition it's...well, it's time to step away to try to keep some perspective.

Today the company sent out email saying they are shopping health insurance. Can you please fill out this form that lists every detailed pre-existing condition? Sign it and send to the insurance rep. All private, yeah. the fine print about privacy was a joke, basically, you can "request" your form be moved from the data base, but its going to be out there.

Who would fill out this form truthfully?? Or fill it out at all? No one in a sane mind puts out their pre-existing conditions to a fucking insurance broker. One of our guys' wife has ovarian cancer right now, going thru the start of treatment. To see his face when he opened this email......

UAE call to ban hypnotic music as illegal 'digital drug'

DUBAI // A police scientist is calling for a type of hypnotic music to be banned by law in the same way as drugs.

Dr Sarhan Al Meheini, deputy director of the Police Sciences Academy in Sharjah, believes audio files called "binaural beats" should be dealt with like cannabis and ecstasy.

Binaural beats are generally used to reach altered states of consciousness, for meditation or alertness or to aid sleep, but many producers claim the technology can mimic the effect of drugs on the brain.

There is no scientific evidence for their claims and reviews are mixed at best, but Dr Al Meheini believes "digital drugs" pose a risk to society.

Reminds me of one damnation of Rock n Roll by some US senator or governor in the 1950's: It's the beat, it's the beat, it's the beat.

Long ago, you could use a simple FM radio as a source of white noise, simply by tuning somewhere between stations, but most modern radios will automatically mute the sound when the signal is weak.

You won't hear this often in international politics.

From the Treasurer of Australia
Swan attacks Republican 'cranks and crazies'

Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has delivered a speech labelling some elements of the United States Republican party as "cranks and crazies".

Mr Swan's speech at the Financial Services Council breakfast in Sydney comes less than two months before the US election.

His speech referred to political gridlock over spending cuts and tax increases due to kick in early next year, which could tip the US economy back into recession.

"Let's be blunt, the biggest threat to the world's biggest economy are the cranks and crazies that have taken over parts of the Republican Party," he said.

"Despite (US president Barack) Obama's goodwill ... the national interest was held hostage by the rise of the extreme right Tea-Party wing of the Republicans.

"There can be few things more alarming in public policy than a political group which was genuinely prepared to see the government of the United States default on its obligations in order to score a political point."

Mr Swan says global markets are nervously watching hardline elements of the Republicans for signs they will block reasonable attempts to support growth.

Heh, it just occurred to me that another motivating factor in Willard's choice to dump his '11 return as well as the summary of the past decade out on a Friday might have something to do with the two threats to release his full tax returns. Certainly would make sense, if you wanted to put yourself in a position to accuse those released of being fakes, to get this out there ahead of such a release.

That's the point, the wingers are gonna howl like crazy that it's not a "full disclosure." They'd demand to know why they should accept it when they know that the relevant data has been kept from them. And then they could get smacked with their acceptance of Romney's "summary" of his tax returns.

Hear hear. I've been more or less out of circulation all week because I just couldn't deal with the negativity. We (American Muslims) already deal with a bunch of baggage every time this kind of shit starts up—embarrassment (feelings of guilt by association), anger (it's all so stupid & counterproductive), frustration (we have no control over it), etc.—so the thought of coming online and adding to the stress is pretty much out of the question. I can't imagine what it must be like to be Muslim in America. I *do* know, however, that if a post like that was sent to this board when I was a hatchling, the response would have been suggestions for CL to don a pork skin burka, wear a bacon necklace and get Transferred out of the US.

And the Transfer comments would have come from an entrenched radical Kahanist cohort that existed here at that time.

I didn't get into positive karma territory for a long time.

Morning, Lizards. This news out of Libya is heartening, and I'm glad to see it.

It is my sincerest hope that moderates in the Muslim world start standing up to the radicals, and telling them, "No, sorry....see, we don't roll like that." The radicals (modern-day Kharijites, in my opinion) are a relative minority in the Muslim fold, and need to be told off soundly.

And the Wahabi movement needs to be shown for what it is; a retrogressive, reactionary utopian fantasy that has no place in the modern world except as perhaps a source of academic discussion.
