Uh… About That “Bump in the Road?”

Searching for reeds
Wingnuts • Views: 49,987

The latest wingnut outrageous outrage revolves around President Obama’s use of the phrase “bumps in the road,” while speaking about the road to democracy and peace in the Middle East and the Arab Spring during an interview on 60 Minutes last night.

“I think it was absolutely the right thing for us to do to align ourselves with democracy, universal rights a notion that people have to be able to participate in their own governance … But I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because, you know, in a lot of these places, the one organizing principle has been Islam. The one part of society that hasn’t been controlled completely by the government. There are strains of extremism, and anti-Americanism, and anti-Western sentiment.”

Ari Fleischer was one of the first out of the gate with his gross and morbid mischaracterization of President Obama’s comment:

This piqued my interest so off I went in search of others who have used this phrase when speaking about Middle East peace process or perhaps the Iraq War. I was able to immediately find two from the previous administration under George W. Bush…

Dr. Condoleezza Rice Discusses the Roadmap for Peace in the Middle East Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt
June 3, 2003

Condoleezza RiceQuestion: Dr. Rice, thank you for joining us. I want to begin, there’s a sense of optimism at the meetings here in Sharm el-Sheikh today, but I’m wondering if you’re worried at all about a potential problem down the road? Many of the Arab leaders the President met with today say that the administration wants to push Yasser Arafat out of the picture completely too soon. And in their view, if there is to be an agreement, that he will have to be there at the end to sign it and to sell it to the Palestinians. Is that a problem?

Dr. Rice: Clearly, this is a difficult process and it’s going to be a long process and there will be bumps in the road, we understand that. But we got a very important start under new conditions today. And the new conditions include, of course, the end of the war in Iraq, but also the appointment of Prime Minister Abbas, who is the first Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority. He was here today, he was representing the Palestinian people. He had a great delegation with him of people who are committed to creating democratic institutions in the Palestinian Authority, in fighting terrorism, in having institutions that are accountable and transparent.

Speech by Ambassador L. Paul Bremer III
National Press Club
July 23, 2003

Paul Bremer[On the future of Iraq including coalition forces security.]

Additional steps that will be taken over the next 60 days to improve security include, first, recruiting and training the first battalion of the new Iraqi army. Recruitment commenced this weekend. And I’m told in conversations with Baghdad this morning that there were mobs of people volunteering to join the new Iraqi army. It will be a volunteer force, not a conscripted force.

Secondly, we will raise eight battalions of the new Iraqi civil defense corps in the next 60 days. We will open the new police academy, which is even now recruiting for police. We will re-establish the border guard. We will start trials before the central criminal court, which I established a month ago, and we will start judge-training seminars.

But we need to be realistic. There will be bumps in the road. Total security is not possible. Continued success on our overall reconstruction plan will probably be met by bitterenders [sic] who target our successes.

Thus we find the former Secretary of State describing the future of Middle East peace and security for the State of Israel as one which will include “bumps in the road,” and former Ambassador Paul Bremer seeing the future and security of Iraq as one being paved with “bumps in the road.”

Conclusion? President Obama was simply using a common phrase when describing highly volatile international situations, much the same as former Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice as well as former Ambassador Paul Bremer. Both, as we well know, are Republicans.

Yes. There are plenty of bumps in the road to the top of bullshit mountain.

Carney on Obama’s “bumps in the road” comment
September 24, 2012 12:04 PM

White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters that criticism from Republicans amounted to a “desperate attempt to grasp at words” for political advantage.

“I understand that Republicans in this case are searching for reeds to grab on to, but I think the president’s views on these matters are very clear and very strong.”
— White House Press Secretary Jay Carney

UPDATE at 9/24/12 1:36:21 pm

LGF member Obdicut has informed me that in October of 2003, Republican Paul Bremer, then Governor of Iraq and former Reagan Ambassador and Coordinator for Counterterrorism, used the very same euphemism, “bumps in the road,” within days of a suicide bombing that left 8 Iraqi policemen dead.

Coalition Provisional Authority Briefing with L. Paul Bremer
Baghdad, Iraq
October 9, 2003

Q (Name inaudible) from CNN. Mr. Bremer, with all of your positives and accomplishments notwithstanding, how much longer can we have this daily violence and chaos, with daily loss of life, before the coalition acknowledge that it was very ill-prepared for the aftermath of the war, that it fundamentally misread the reality and the complexity of Iraq?

MR. BREMER: Well, it’s going to be a very long time before I admit either of those things, to answer your question. Would you like me to go further in my answer?

Q Go for it.

MR. BREMER: (Chuckles.) Look, we found, as I said, an economic situation that was, I think, worse than people expected, when we got here. Of course, we knew that Saddam had been a monster, and we knew that he had repressed his people for 35 years, and we knew that he had spent lots of money, perhaps a third of the wealth of the country, year after year on his weapons.
[…]

We will see it through. We — I am optimistic. We have made an enormous amount of progress here in six months, more than I think anybody could have safely predicted, beyond — in many places, beyond what our plan was. And I think we will continue to implement, as we go forward, on our plan over the next six to nine to 12 months.

We will have — there will be bumps in the road. There will be bad days, like today. But I think it’s important, as — for those of you who are here regularly covering the story, to put that in perspective, because it’s a lot better than it was. I can speak from personal experience about the difference in Baghdad. I arrived five months ago, and it’s a totally different country than it was five months ago, completely different. And it’s sometimes important to put in perspective, when there are daily problems, like — as there were today, how far we have come.

Thanks. I was on fire when I started reading some of the reactions. Especially the one from Ari Fleischer.

Obama was talking about the overall situation much like Bremer and Rice. American troops were already dying in Iraq when Bremer made his comment. Where was the outrage from the right then?

As I remember it, and my memory is admittedly spotty at times, there was a lot of outrage at the time, but it was aimed towards the idea that dead troops were "bumps in the road" when Bremer used the phrase. The idea being that the Bush Administration was taking a rather crass view of troops dying in pursuit of a less-than-worthwhile goal.

David Barton's New Axiom: 'Liberalism Kills'

I tell you what, Richard gave a two word axiom that we ought to emblazon on everything we have: liberalism kills.

Liberalism kills, whether it's in the family; whether it's in a university; whether it's in education; whether it's in business; whether it's in government, and especially in denominations, liberalism kills.

That's a great axiom to remember is liberalism kills.

COALITION PROVISIONAL AUTHORITY BRIEFING
WITH L. PAUL BREMER,

U.S. PRESIDENTIAL ENVOY TO IRAQ
BAGHDAD, IRAQ, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2003

Q (Name inaudible) from CNN. Mr. Bremer, with all of your positives and accomplishments notwithstanding, how much longer can we have this daily violence and chaos, with daily loss of life, before the coalition acknowledge that it was very ill-prepared for the aftermath of the war, that it fundamentally misread the reality and the complexity of Iraq?

Of course, we knew that Saddam had been a monster, and we knew that he had repressed his people for 35 years, and we knew that he had spent lots of money, perhaps a third of the wealth of the country, year after year on his weapons.

What I think was not appreciated sufficiently was the degree to which he had -- by misallocating revenues, had starved the infrastructure of this country -- the water, the power, agriculture, health care. You can go right down the list -- schools, universities.

And so we have found a situation where at liberation we have a real responsibility to try to create the conditions for growth and stability here. And that is the purpose of the president's $20 billion request.

We will see it through. We -- I am optimistic. We have made an enormous amount of progress here in six months, more than I think anybody could have safely predicted, beyond -- in many places, beyond what our plan was. Is Romney channeling his inner Hoft? Because Hoft was on top of that from the outset, ignoring the common usage of bumps in the road and repeated usage of the oft-used phrase in referring to the peace process.

Let's see: President Clinton - bumps in the road -1998.

George Mitchell - 2010.

Or how about Quartet special envoy James Wolfensohn, a former World Bank president in 2005:

"While there are bumps in the road, I am infinitely more optimistic today than I was two weeks ago," he said.

in talking about resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

62 dragonfire1981  Mon, Sep 24, 2012 1:48:22pm

Oh boy, Orly Taitz has come to my neck of the woods...

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -
California lawyer Orley Taitz has brought her national campaign to disqualify President Barack Obama in the November election to Mississippi.

Monday, Taitz was in U.S. District Court in Jackson for a hearing before Judge Henry Wingate.

Taitz claims Obama should be disqualified because his birth certificate is a fake, and he is using a fake Social Security Number.

The hearing included a teleconference with attorneys representing the Democratic Party, who filed a motion to dismiss the suit.

Judge Wingate gave Taitz three weeks to serve President Obama, Representative Nancy Pelosi and three Hawaiian officials.

The judge will set a hearing at a later date and allow Taitz to serve President Obama with papers to get him to respond to the suit.

Taitz has filed suits against the President in multiple states, but so far, no judge has heard her case.

If there's one state she might actually succeed in getting Obama removed from the ballot it would have to be Mississippi. But then again, if even Kansas shot her down...

Heh, how bad is the election going for the wingnuts? Bad enough that I just read an email from the "Campaign to Defeat Barack Obama" that admitted up front that Obama's out-raising and out-spending the Romney/Ryan ticket in every battleground state. What's worse, their little telethon they were running had a stated goal of $50,000 and had only managed to raise $10,000 by what I can only guess was the half-way point.

Something tells me the much vaunted "enthusiasm gap" is not in their favor.

Republicans have not JUST burned bridges. They have napalmed the bridge, salted the earth around where the bridge was, nuked it from orbit just to be safe, and then brought in the tanks to bombard it for another year or so. They are taking NO chances they might actually win.

Republicans might get some more traction if they didn't get so upset over every fucking little thing that crosses their path.

Case in point: up here in Maine, the Portland Press-Herald's Bill Nemitz did a column a couple weeks ago where he wrote:

That complaint struck me as hypocritical, which was why I led the column: "David Sorensen (the spokesman for Maine's Republicans) reminds me of the kid who murders both of his parents and then asks the judge for mercy because he's an orphan."

Not exactly original, but not the sort of thing any sane person would set himself on fire over, yes?

Well, no. State Republicans went apeshit over his column:

"Chairman (Charlie) Webster Demands Apologies from Nemitz, King -- Outrageous comments have no place in Maine politics," fumed the press release from state Republican headquarters.

"Summers Campaign: King Needs to Apologize for Support of Hateful Remarks," echoed the blast from Summers' camp.

***

"Campaigns can get heated, but there is no place in Maine politics for this type of venomous personal attack," charged Summers' spokesman Drew Brandewie, who's on loan from the staff of Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and has been in Maine less than a month. "Comparing a political opponent to a murderer is clearly over the line ..."

"This is a new low for liberal columnist Bill Nemitz," wailed Webster. "Likening our staff to someone who murders his parents is disgusting. He should apologize for his outrageous remarks and MaineToday Media should hold him accountable for his violent vitriol."

I've got some inflammatory language for you guys right here: grow a fucking pair, and get a fucking life.

Seriously Willard, cold fusion was dubbed a hoax over 2 decades ago. It's not a matter of reproducing an result, because the two scientists who announced the result later admitted they'd made it up.

It really does seem emblematic of the GOP mentality, namely that refusal to acknowledge that the supporters of renewable energy are right, so we must instead believe in fantasies like "clean coal" and "cold fusion."

Trump at Liberty U: "don’t let people take advantage. Get even."

It may not be what Jesus would do, but billionaire developer and reality TV star Donald Trump counseled students Monday at the Falwell family’s Liberty University not to turn the other cheek but to “get even” with adversaries.

In a speech where he also called President Barack Obama “a Teflon president” who seems to win favorable press coverage no matter the circumstance, Trump counseled Liberty students to “get even” with those who wrong them in business.

“I always say don’t let people take advantage — this goes for a country, too, by the way — don’t let people take advantage. Get even. And you know, if nothing else, others will see that and they’re going to say, ‘You know, I’m going to let Jim Smith or Sarah Malone, I’m going to let them alone because they’re tough customers,” said Trump, known for his brusque “you’re fired” line on NBC’s “The Apprentice” business reality series.

The comment was met with silence from more than 10,000 students, who are encouraged to live “a lifestyle of Biblical morality” and commonly carry the Bible among their books on Liberty’s campus. In Christ’s Sermon on the Mount recorded in chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew, he tells his followers to reject eye-for-an-eye justice and, if slapped, turn the other cheek rather than retaliate.

In another awkward moment in the packed basketball arena on the Lynchburg, Va., campus, the thrice-wed Trump advised students to have prenuptial agreements, then recanted it in the same breath.

“The other thing I tell people — because in New York it’s like a total catastrophe, it’s an epidemic — I always say always have a prenuptial agreement, but I won’t say that because you people don’t get divorced, right?” he said to measured applause. “Nobody gets divorced, so I will not say ‘have a prenuptial agreement’ to anybody in this room.”

In New York, defiant Ahmadinejad says Israel will be 'eliminated'

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday Israel has no roots in the Middle East and would be "eliminated," ignoring a U.N. warning to avoid incendiary rhetoric ahead of the annual General Assembly session.

Ahmadinejad also said he did not take seriously the threat that Israel could launch a military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, denied sending arms to Syria, and alluded to Iran's threats to the life of British author Salman Rushdie.

The United States quickly dismissed the Iranian president's comments as "disgusting, offensive and outrageous."

What a dick.

Some number of those kids have to be bright and honest. They'll ask themselves why he was permitted on the campus.

Ouch. NYT on Romney v Ryan quotes a GOP staffer:

"If the Republican ticket loses in November, the rush by Mr. Ryan and other 2016 hopefuls to position themselves for the Iowa caucuses “is going to look like Best Buy the night after Thanksgiving,” said Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Republican Party of Iowa. “I hate to say this, but if Ryan wants to run for national office again, he’ll probably have to wash the stench of Romney off of him.”

The back side of the sign was covered with, “Romney & Ryan: Christian. White. Anti-Gay. Republicans Rule!”

If they were really (intellectually) honest, they wouldn't be going to Liberty University to begin with.
