Washington Post Polls: Obama Has Significant Lead in Ohio, Edge in Florida

Romney sinks further
Politics • Views: 38,657

According to the new Washington Post polls, President Obama is continuing to increase his lead over Mitt Romney in key battleground states.

President Obama has grabbed a significant lead over Mitt Romney in Ohio and holds a slender edge in Florida, according to two new polls by The Washington Post, indicating that there are fresh hurdles in the way of the Republican challenger’s best route to victory in the Electoral College.

Among likely voters, Obama is ahead of Romney in Ohio 52 percent to 44 percent. In Florida, the president leads 51 percent to 47 percent, a numerical but not statistically significant edge. Among all registered Florida voters, Obama is ahead by nine percentage points.

The new numbers come one week after a Washington Post poll in Virginia showed Obama with a clear lead there. More than half of all money spent in the campaign has focused on these three states, and many analysts say Romney has to win two of the three to capture the White House.

UPDATE at 9/25/12 11:23:20 am

And as desperation sets in, the Republican Party is starting to whine about “skewed polls.”

At this point, it's looking like Romney is gonna need some kinda earth-shattering event to have a chance. With early-voting getting ready to start up in many of the battleground states, even if there's an October surprise, the effect of it might be dampened.

3 erik_t  Tue, Sep 25, 2012 11:25:28am

Indeed, IIRC Romney needs to sweep all three of those states if several less-swingey states (Colorado, Wisconsin, etc) go to Obama as expected.

Someone else said it earlier - if you're complaining about 'skewed polls' at this point in the election, it's probably because they all show you losing.

Sounds right. Anyhow speaking from on the ground in Virginia, I've seen more ads for Obama than Romney though the one American Crossroads ad with the small business owners is playing a ton. Just don't think Romney will fly here.

Speaking of music, at the rate things are going, I predict Romney's debate performance will pretty much consist of him pointing to Obama and repeating the refrain from this song:

This actually isn't so different than what happen in '08, only this time it's, the polls are wrong because they're oversampling Dems, whereas then the mantra was, the polls are wrong because of the "Bradley/Wilder effect".

Historically, when pollsters changed from all voter to likely voter models there was a shift in the results that favored Republicans. This year coincided with the convention jumps with Obama gaining and keeping a larger lead.

It feeds the belief that all these professional organizations (except Gallup and Rasmussen to some extent) have engaged in a conspiracy to skew the poll results with their models. Never mind that some of the pros have shown their numbers and explained why their models exist, they're showing Obama as leading and so they're wrong.

re: #9 Obdicut

In complete sincerity- while it may seem ridiculous, I feel I must ask for your forgiveness before Yom Kippur. After the game last night, I realize that I was no better than the 2 Wisconsin politicians who tweeted about the union refs in the NFL being locked out, they only care about unions in the context of fandom. I continued to watch the games despite the lockout, and realize that by doing so, it was akin to crossing a picket line, one I could not see. I have Sunday Ticket, but will not watch another NFL game until the refs are back. Sadly I didn't have your clarity on this issue, and I should have, but was blind. In addition to asking for forgiveness for any offense I may have given, I ask you to forgive me for letting my fandom get in the way of my principles. May everyone be blessed in the coming year, regardless of deity allegiances, or the lack thereof.

re: #50 DisturbedEma

First of all, you committed no offense against me whatsoever. If there is an offense-- and I don't believe there is-- it was committed towards the refs.

Second, I really don't watch much NFL at all so it's not like this is a big deprivation. however, big ups to you for giving the reps the props they deserve and standing in solidarity with them. The only way the NFL is going to get smart on this is if people actually start not watching games.

Problem is now they've kind of turned it into reality TV, and that'll probably increase the ratings over the very short term, while damaging the credibility of the NFL for a long time.

Pretty much. They're convinced that all the major polling houses are skewing their numbers in Obama's favor, no doubt all them holding liberal biases or not wanting to be thought of as "conservative," and so the real numbers really fall in Romney's favor. Plus they're banking on 80% or more of the undecided vote to go Romney, which they think is the critical edge once their "unskewed polls" are factored in that show a "real" lead either for Romney or by a couple points for Obama.

I find it very interesting that their pollster is saying that all of the polls are BS.....but didn't mention their internal numbers at all

Actually the article did explain it in a couple of places.

Argument one. Facts: Party self-ID was 7% greater for D than R in 2008. It's only 5%D now. Allegation: that Obama favoring pollsters are still using 7%. Weakness: Unskewed and its ilk are claiming the margin should be 2%D or less. Additional fact: both D and R self-IDs are down from 2008 with I experiencing significant gain. If "leans" from the voters who self-identify as I are given to respective parties the actual D margin becomes +9%.

Argument two. Fact: non-white turnout (both proportional and total) of the vote was at a record high in 2008, and was lower in 2010. Allegation: It was a fluke spike and the turnout will be lower. Weakness: a) the challengers are claiming numbers on par with 2002, not 2004 or 2006. Additional point: off-year and main-year matter. 2010's non-white turnout was larger than 2006 which was larger than 2002. Likewise 2000 and 2004 saw new records for non-white turnout. In other words the challenger model is a reversal of trend.

They explain their reasoning. It just requires a little historical revisionism to work.

FTC Catches PC Rental Companies Spying On Users, Taking Secret Webcam Pics

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday released a bombshell privacy agreement it reached with eight companies, most of them PC rental firms and one software company, for using PC tracking and security software called "Detective Mode" to spy on customers, including taking pictures of them using the PC's webcameras, without consumers' knowledge or consent.

The eight companies named include:

DesignerWare, LLC
Aspen Way Enterprises, Inc.
B. Stamper Enterprises, Inc.
C.A.L.M. Ventures, Inc.
J.A.G. Rents, LLC
Red Zone Investment Group, Inc
Showplace, Inc.
Watershed Development Corp.

The FTC's agreement with the companies prevents them from repeating the snooping activities without expressed affirmative consumer approval and bans them from using the information collected using the "Detective Mode" software. It also bans the maker of the "Detective Mode" software, DesignerWare, from using it again. But the companies do not face a fine or other penalty.

Obviously this was another case of responsible business practices by private companies being attacked by government regulations.

He points out something that a lot of the "unskewed" nutters are taking for granted, namely that there's this great untapped reserve of undecideds who are going to break for Romney at the last second and cart his ass to victory. Another is that any who are polled are say they're gonna vote third party will, when they get to the poll, have a "come to jesus" moment and decide that a vote for Romney is better than another 4 years of Obama.

The amount of assumptions necessary at this point to entertain a Romney victory is staggering in its complexity.

Paul Ryan's Powerpoint

A word about PowerPoint. PowerPoint was released by Microsoft in 1990 as a way to euthanize cattle using a method less cruel than hitting them over the head with iron mallets. After PETA successfully argued in court that PowerPoint actually was more cruel than iron mallets, the program was adopted by corporations for slide show presentations.

Conducting a PowerPoint presentation is a lot like smoking a cigar. Only the person doing it likes it. The people around him want to hit him with a chair.

PowerPoint is usually restricted to conference rooms where the doors are locked from the outside. It is, therefore, considered unsuited for large rallies, where people have a means of escape and where the purpose is to energize rather than daze.

Ryan’s PowerPoint slides were officially labeled: “Our Unsustainable Debt (U.S. Debt Held by Public as a Share of Economy),” “Your Share of the Debt,” “Who Funds Our Reckless Spending?” and “How the Government Spends Your Money.”

The Romney campaign was furious. But Ryan reportedly said, “Let Ryan be Ryan and let the Stench be the Stench.”

At this point, it's looking like Romney is gonna need some kinda earth-shattering event to have a chance. With early-voting getting ready to start up in many of the battleground states, even if there's an October surprise, the effect of it might be dampened.

The problem for Romney is that the earth-shattering events he keeps having involve him putting his Mitts firmly in his mouth.

Other counties may join in using Pennsylvania voter-ID law loophole

On Thursday, Allegheny and Montgomery Counties said they would begin issuing their own ID cards through county-run facilities.

The move exploits a loophole in the new law that allows both colleges and senior-care centers to provide such cards to anyone who lives in the county - not just to the people who attend those colleges or reside in those centers.

The counties' officials explained their decisions by citing complaints from residents who had run into trouble obtaining the required photo ID through the state's preferred route, the Department of Transportation.

Some said PennDot workers turned them away for failing to bring sufficient proof of identity, while others were rejected for bringing documents with slightly mismatched names.

"This does not solve the problems across the Commonwealth," Montgomery County Commissioners Chairman, Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, said of his county's plan. "But it is an important step in the right direction for our constituents."

Mitt Romney explains why Citizens United was wrong

I just think that the most important aspect in being able to have a productive relationship between the teachers’ unions and the districts in the states that they are dealing with is that the person sitting across the table from them should not have received the largest campaign contributions from the teachers’ union itself. . . . The largest contributors to the Democratic Party are the teachers’ unions, the federal teachers unions, and so, if [the unions] can elect someone that person is supposed to be representing the public vis a vis the teachers’ union, but actually most of their money came from the teachers’ union. It’s an extraordinary conflict of interest. That’s something I think is a problem and should be addressed.

Romney is right! When a wealthy individual or organization that has a stake in public policy is able to spend their vast fortunes influencing elections, that inevitably leads to corruption. No one should have any illusions that politicians who enjoy massive support from teachers’ unions are any less corruptible than those who enjoy the support of Republican casino billionaires.

Yet this problem cannot “be addressed,” as Romney suggests, because the Supreme Court declared in Citizens United v. FEC that wealthy corporations and unions have a right to spend unlimited sums of money to buy and sell elections. The core holding of Citizens United was that massive outside spending seeking to change the result of an election “do[es] not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption.” Apparently, even Mitt Romney understands that this holding makes no sense.

If Romney is worried about the impact union donations can have on lawmakers’ behavior, than he should be absolutely outraged by corporate, millionaire and billionaire donations. Federal law permits workers to opt-out of union dues spent to influence elections, which means that union election spending comes from pooling small contributions from workers who did not exercise this legal right. Corporations, by contrast, are under no obligation to seek approval from their investors or other stakeholders before trying to buy an election.

Oooh somebody does not like my alternative ad to Pam Geller's subway hate posters.

I do not like Pamela Geller and feel she often goes too far. However, this time she is correct and you have gone too far. There is nothing "Islamophobic" about saying that Jihad is savage any more than it is "Christophobic" to say the Crusades - or the Inquisition - were savage. It is not "Islamophobic" to say that respected Muslim leaders call for Jihad against Israel and use Islam to whip up hatred against Israel. These are facts. It is not "Islamophobic" to say that we see very little opposition to these calls for Jihad from respected Muslim leaders, or to say that Muslims who call for coexistence with Israel are usually condemned vociferously by their fellow Muslims. These are also, unfortunately, facts. Pamela Geller's ad says "fight Jihad", not "fight Islam". Do you really believe that the vicious savagery of Jihad is so typical of Islam that use of the word is hate speech against Muslims in general? If so, then you are the "dumbass" for not seeing that Islam is something to be feared and fought. Wishing you a Shana Tovah and well over the Fast.

Please Tweet the alternative ad!

Curiously, among the bottom 10 (out of 50 states and DC):

40 CONNECTICUT 9.0 - D
41 ILLINOIS 9.1 - D
41 MISSISSIPPI 9.1 - R
41 NEW YORK 9.1 - D
44 GEORGIA 9.2 - R
45 MICHIGAN 9.4 - R
46 SOUTH CAROLINA 9.6 - R
47 NORTH CAROLINA 9.7 - R
48 NEW JERSEY 9.9 - R
49 CALIFORNIA 10.6 - D
50 RHODE ISLAND 10.7 - I
51 NEVADA 12.1 - R

One could flip that argument around and claim that 6 of the bottom 9 are GOP led states, or 7 out of 10 of the bottom are GOP led states.

What that says is that the political leadership of a particular state doesn't necessarily correlate with unemployment rates. Note too that the unemployment rates in places like the Dakotas is affected by the fracking boom, while some states like NV are suffering from the housing collapse still. Then there's NJ, which has a much higher unemployment rate than neighboring NY, even though both are dealing with the fallout from the financial crisis/retrenchment by those firms, pharma companies leaving (Roche) and the larger problems with the slow housing recovery.

OK, now I'm seeing the ad for "Dead Breitbart presents Occupy Unmasked," too.

I started to go and block it, but then I realized I like the idea of the Breitbrats giving their money to me.

Sometimes - rarely, but sometimes - I'm a little hesitant to link LGF links to friends specifically because of the sometimes bizarrely mixed messages that could be inferred by seeing a Breitbart-sponsored ad banner right above a front-page link about the Loeschs' latest self-promoted psychotic episode.

I wouldn't suggest changing anything, as it is amusing to think of such advertisers wasting their money on an inherently disinterested target audience, but for people who don't know the history of LGF it can be a bit of a head-scratcher.

re: #181 Lidane

And where was the replay refs? They aren't replacements (only the on-the-field refs are). They missed the call too - claiming that Seattle had possession when it appears that the GB defender had it. The replay ref can't call the pass interference (only on the field refs can do that).

GB got screwed twice - once because of the non-call pass interference, and then that the refs (and the replay judge) didn't think that GB had possession when by all measures they did. The fact that it was replacements on the field didn't help, but the replay judge in that game didn't do anyone any favors by ignoring the right call there.

Mitt's already starting to snipe, since he's had a few "I'm the one running for President, not him" type remarks here and there.

Stupid outrageous outrage was stupid and not very outrageous.

Mitt Romney Was Joking About Airplane Windows

The Los Angeles Times story that relayed Romney's airplane remark to the world was based off a pool report written by the New York Times's Ashley Parker. When we asked Parker this morning whether it seemed as if Romney made the mark in jest, she left no doubt. "Romney was joking," she e-mailed. Parker told us that while the pool report didn't explicitly indicate that Romney was joking, it was self-evident that he was. "The pool report provided the full transcript of his comments on Ann's plane scare," she said, "and it was clear from the context that he was not being serious."

And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she’s safe and sound.”

Still comes off as a really stupid and weirdly inappropriate thing to say, even if it was a "joke."

232 Kragar  Tue, Sep 25, 2012 2:00:54pm

Barton: 'I Don't Think the President has Ever Read the Bible From Cover to Cover'

I've started asking people "have you read through the Bible from cover to cover?" And I'm talking people fifty, sixty, seventy years old who have been in the church fifty years who have never read the Bible from cover to cover.

Now if you haven't read the play book or the rule book, you're not going to know what's in it. Going back to a baseball analogy, that's like alright, I've got the bat, the glove, the ball but I don't care what the rules are, I don't know what the rules are, I don't want to read the rule book or the play book. You can't do that.

And so we really have a biblically illiterate group of folks now who claim Christianity and that's where I put the President; I don't think the President has ever read the Bible from cover to cover

Its not like reading it from cover to cover ever helped Barton understand any of it.

but he doesn't deserve one scintilla of defense since he has repeatedly, shamelessly twisted every possible word to come out of obama's mouth

so he heartily deserves for everybody to think he was serious and being an idiot

As an engineering proposal, the openable windows bit would make Romney look stupid. As humour, it makes him look very, very stupid.

When in doubt and it's not flying - claim it was satire.

Hey, if Limbaugh can pull that shit, so can Mitt, right?

One of the most dangerous fires are on-board Submarines. I for the life of me can't figure out why Subs don't have windows that open. All that water would surely put the fire out.

About Romney's Joke

[Link: nymag.com...]

His wife's airplane had an electrical fire and he's making jokes about it! This is OUTRAGEOUS!

It's as bad as calling the murder of a U.S. Envoy a "bump in the road." Where is all the outrage over this? She could have died!?

Keep in mind, if the numbers don't go in the Republicans' favor, they can always fall back on their old tried-and-true methods.

Republican Staffers Charged With 36 Counts of Election Fraud

It turns out that the Republican Party’s obsession with voter fraud may be yet another case of projection. Four former staffers for resigned House Rep. Thaddeus McCotter have been charged with 36 counts of misdemeanor and felony election fraud. Yesterday one of those staffers, Lorianne O’Brady, pled not guilty to five misdemeanor counts of submitting fraudulent signatures on a ballot petition. O’Brady is the last of the four staffers to be arraigned; the other three, Don Yowchuang, Mary Melissa Turnbull, and Paul Seewald, were arraigned on similar charges on August 10th.

My wife The Geek (no slam on my wife, she'll tell you she's a geek) has exchanged emails with him, says he's a nice dude.
