RNC-Backed Company Accused Of Voter Registration Fraud

The Republican Party of Florida has cut ties with a company it paid $1.2 million to register voters after the elections supervisor in Palm Beach County asked the state’s attorney’s office to review 106 “questionable” applications.

Palm Beach County Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher said she turned the applications over to law enforcement officials because of similar-looking signatures, missing information and wrong addresses on the forms. The questionable applications were part of a batch of 304 voter registration forms turned in by the firm using the Republican Party of Florida’s identification number, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Mike Grissom, executive director of the Republican Party of Florida, said the party had hired a Virginia-based firm called Strategic Allied Consultants at the request of the Republican National Committee.

Florida Officially Restarts Voter Purge, Revised List Still Appears To Be Inaccurate

Florida has officially restarted it’s controversial purge of registered voters less than 6 weeks before election day. Governor Scott’s intention to resume the effort, detailed in a PowerPoint presentation, was first reported by ThinkProgress.

Initially, Florida identified 180,000 potential non-citizens to be purged from the voter rolls. That list was subsequently narrowed down to 2600 “sure fire” non-citizens. When it became clear in early June that even the smaller list was riddled with errors, elections officials stopped the effort.

According to the Miami Herald, Florida has sent just 198 names to local election supervisors. (Of those, no more than 36 have ever cast a ballot.) But there is already evidence that the latest list still is not accurate.

Voter fraud suspected in East Longmeadow race

The district attorney in Hampden County is investigating whether a Republican candidate for state representative orchestrated an illegal scheme to cast absentee ballots on behalf of hundreds of voters in hope of winning a primary election.

State election officials were tipped off to the potential voter fraud when a suspiciously large number of residents of the Springfield suburb of East Longmeadow suddenly changed party registration from Democrat to independent, making them eligible to vote in the upcoming Republican primary.

When contacted, several of the voters said they had not changed party affiliations, raising concern that someone had switched their party in an attempt to cast fraudulent absentee ballots on their behalf.

Pinal County supervisor hopeful John Enright quits

A Pinal County supervisor candidate has withdrawn from the race in the wake of voter-fraud allegations involving a former companion who, records show, has continued to vote by absentee ballot in the five years since her death.

Butt Chugging Leads To Severe Alcohol Poisoning Of University Of Tennessee Student

Early Saturday, 20-year-old Alexander P. Broughton of Pi Kappa Alpha was brought to the emergency room and showed a blood-alcohol level thought to be “well over” .4, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. They believe he ingested the alcohol by butt chugging. Broughton appeared to be “extremely intoxicated and showed signs of physical and possible sexual assault,” a report obtained by the Knoxville News Sentinel states.

Butt chugging was formally known as an alcohol enema. An individual basically "drinks" the fluid into his or her rectum with a tube or hose. The alcohol's effects come quickly and potently.

In the house, officers found several young males passed out in their bedrooms with “bags from wine boxes, some empty and some partially empty, strewn across the halls and rooms."

Why Obama Is the Least Efficient Antichrist Ever

In the weeks leading up to the November election, President Obama will be doing everything within his power to remind the American people of his successes in office while simultaneously qualifying his mistakes. However, he will avoid one topic at all costs, because it has been, without a doubt, his most dismal failure. Regardless of whether you think Barack Obama has been a fit leader for the United States, he has been unquestionably bad at being an antichrist.

Brazilian court bans anti-Islam film from YouTube

A court in Brazil said it has ordered YouTube to remove clips of the movie that has touched off deadly protests across the Muslim world, the latest in a spate of court-ordered content-removal cases against the video-sharing site.

Sao Paulo-based judge Gilson Delgado Miranda gave the site ten days to remove videos of Innocence of Muslims, which has raised the ire of many Muslims around the world because of its depiction of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers as thugs. After the 10-day window, YouTube's parent company, Google, will face fines of $US5,000 a day for every day the clips remain accessible in Brazil, according to the statement posted on the court's website late Tuesday.

[...]

The Innocence of Muslims ruling resulted from a lawsuit by a group representing Brazil's Muslim community, the National Union of Islamic Entities, which claimed the film violates the country's constitutional guarantee of religious freedom for all faiths.

In a statement on the group's website, Mohamad al Bukai, the head of religious matters for the Sao Paulo-based organisation, hailed the ruling as a victory.

"Freedom of expression must not be confused with giving disproportionate and irresponsible offence, which can provoke serious conse

[...]

The judge in the Brazilian case acknowledged that banning content from sites like YouTube was a thorny issue, according to excerpts of the ruling cited in the National Union of Islamic Entities' statement.

"This type of jurisprudence cannot be confused with censorship," Miranda is quoted as writing. In the excerpts, the judge defines censorship as "the undue restriction of the civic consciousness."

[...]

Interesting take on "freedom of religion".

Youtube/Google has often been the target of Brazilian legal action, as detailed in the article, which continues:

Google has said it's been so inundated by requests by governments worldwide to remove online content that it has begun releasing a summary of the demands, most relating to legitimate attempts to enforce laws on issues ranging from personal privacy to hate speech. But Google, which has been locked in a high-profile battle with China's leaders over online censorship in the communist nation since 2010, says it increasingly fields requests from government agencies trying to use their power to suppress political opinions and other material they don't like.

Brazilian governmental agencies alone submitted a total of 194 content removal requests during the final half of last year, according to a summary released in June. PRIEST BAN ON ‘HINDU’ YOGA CLASS

A PRIEST has banned a yoga exercise class from his church hall for being “anti-Christian”.

Father John Chandler said the ancient activity – which improves flexibility and relieves stress – is a “Hindu spiritual discipline”.

He argues it is therefore wrong for Catholics to do it.

Yoga instructor Cori Withell, 36, hoped to run weekly exercise classes at St Edmund’s Church in Southampton, Hants.

But when Father Chandler heard the classes would involve yoga as well as Pilates he banned them.

Cori, from nearby Eastleigh, said she received a call from the church saying such a class would be “against the church’s religion”.

She described the ban as “ridiculous”.

Father Chandler defended his decision, saying: “Because yoga is a Hindu spiritual discipline it is not compatible with Catholicism. The two just don’t mix.

Father John Chandler said the ancient activity – which improves flexibility and relieves stress – is a “Hindu spiritual discipline

“Catholics should not be doing it.”

NEWS/Innocence of Muslims Actress Files Lawsuit in Federal Court

Innocence of Muslims actress Cindy Lee Garcia isn't backing down from her fight against the movie's filmmaker.

Just a week after an L.A. judge denied Garcia's emergency request to pull the controversial movie down from the Internet, the actress refilled her case in federal court Wednesday, according to the Hollywood Reporter, this time tacking on more claims to her suit, which previously included unfair business practices, fraud and libel.

Pastor lashes out against billboard's Muslim message

Darryl Whaley, pastor of Kingdom Living Ministries Worship Center, stepped from behind the pulpit to the lawn of the Rutherford County Courthouse on Tuesday to denounce a recent billboard erected in Murfreesboro calling on people to love their Muslim neighbors.

“I don’t have to have a sign tell me to love Muslims,” he said before a crowd of about 45 people in a self-described news conference. “(As Christians) we love Muslims. There is no need to single them out. If we’ve got Jesus Christ in our heart, we love Muslims.

I don’t agree with the billboard, but I respect their right to put it there,” he said.

But at the same time, he accused Murfreesboro leaders of not being honest about Islam and of taking cheap shots against those who challenge them. He also criticized the media for allowing freedom of the press to slip away without challenging others. he said media needs to ask tough questions and get answers.

He also criticized the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro for not denouncing Shariah law and radical groups Hamas or Hezbollah. Residents in attendance included Howard and Sally Wall, who are among plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the county over its site plan approval of the Islamic Center in 2010, and former congressional candidate Lou Ann Zelenik, who has also been outspoken about the local mosque and its purpose.

So, let me see if I get this right:

Billboard: " Love Muslim neighbors"

Whaley: " We love Muslims"

ergo, Whaley: "I don’t agree with the billboard".

Syllogisms just aren't what they used to be.

I wonder how much confusion within constituencies targeted by recent voter legislation, that has since been overturned in the courts, will still keep them away from the polls:

[Link: thinkprogress.org...]

A New Hampshire judge held Monday that out-of-state students have a right to vote in the state, rejecting a new requirement that voters sign a statement declaring New Hampshire their domicile and subjecting them to laws that require them to register their vehicles in the state and obtain a New Hampshire driver’s license within 60 days of becoming residents. Judge John Lewis ordered that this paragraph be deleted from voter registration forms, saying it “presents an inaccurate expression of the law and has a clear harmful effect on the exercise of voting rights and education connected therewith.” The law implementing this requirement passed in June with strong Republican support, and over the veto of Gov. John Lynch. Last March, the leader of the State House, Bill O’Brien, said he supported such a law to stop students from “basically doing what I did when I was a kid: voting as a liberal.”

T'was the night before elections,
And all thru' the town,
Tempers were flaring
Emotions ran up and down.

I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap,
Had shut off the TV,
tired of political crap.

When all of a sudden,
There arose such a noise,
I peered out my window,
Saw Obama and his boys

They had come for my wallet,
They wanted my pay
To hand out to others
Who had not worked a day!

He snatched up my money,
And quick as a wink,
Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink.

He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart.
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!

'On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden and Ayers!
On Acorn, on Pelosi'
He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause,
And as they flew out of sight,
I heard him laugh at a nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think on this one final note...
IF YOU DON'T WANT SOCIALISM GET OUT AND VOTE !!!!

I never received direct answers to any questions, just boilerplate reponses, which made me even more suspicious.

She later said she wanted to come out and visit me - at her own expense. I went along to a point. Which made me somwhat less suspicious, she was not asking for ticket money.

Then I read some information on scams and found out where that one leads to: you appear at the gate, she does not arrive. You receive a message that she was not allowed off the plane unless she can produce $1,000 in cash...could you forward it to her, she just needs it to get through the gate and she'll pay you right back as soon as she gets through ...

It was before he retired, but after he retroactively retired.

Or, to put it another way, he was still working there at the time, but then later on it turned out he wasn't.

Alles klar?

155 freetoken  Thu, Sep 27, 2012 3:29:46am

"Harvesting" doctrines are popular in the various religious circles, and the term is thrown around quite a bit.

E.g.:

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. 35 So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet:

“I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”[c]

36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”

37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.

and

34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

and

11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters,[d] that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

And so on.

Do you not see? The end is near, and Mitt is merely bringing in the sheaths.

Workers at the Madeira Beach facility take alligators smaller than 4 feet long to pool parties around the Tampa Bay area and allow guests to swim with them, hold them and take photos.

Don't know how gators take to chlorinated water, but I thought one of the reasons you don't feed gators in FL is to prevent them from becoming unafraid of humans.

So an old Cajun comes into a bar with his pet alligator.

"You gotta get that thing outta here," says the bartender, "It's dangerous!"

"Perfectly harmless," reples the old Cajun, sets the gator on the bar, opens his mouth, places his dick in the gator's mouth and proceeds to bash it on the head repeatedly with a bottle. The gator just lies there motionless.

"See? Harmless, like I told ya! Anybody else wanna try it?"

"I do," says a little fellow at the end of the bar, "just don't hit me on the head with a bottle!"

There was a state park I used to go to as a kid. They had gators everywhere. At the part where you would picnic they had a net in the water to keep the gators away. Uh huh. I never swam there and have actually had nightmares about the spot where the swimming was allowed.

Huntington Beach state park in South Carolina

You drive in and there's narrow a road that has marshes on both sides loaded with gators. Not 100 yards away are the parking lots to the beaches

From the "Alligator FAQ":

Alligators are some of the most fascinating animals found in Myakka River State park. These powerful reptiles elicit endless curiosity, awe and, sometimes, fear. Knowing a little more about alligators can help you appreciate their beauty, while also making your visit to the park safer and more enjoyable.

6.Has anyone ever been eaten by an alligator in the park?

No. However, there are three accounts of minor injuries, each a bite on the victim's leg. In one instance, the victim had a stringer of fish tied to his waist, the other two were probably a result of the victim stepping too close to a submerged alligator.

Yes, I would say that not being bitten by large killer reptiles is high on the list of factors that determine my enjoyment of a day out.

When our neighbours from Italy visited we took them to Wakulla Springs and DeFuniak Springs. We also had a ranger here let them touch a 'safed' baby. When they were leaving we asked their girls what they would remember about America: "The tornado and the alligators."

Here's his little pity party about our use of drones in North Waziristan. All he does is whine and lament, not caring about how we're to eliminate the the terror masters hiding there who want to kill us.

I'll even grant that civilians in some towns are likely terrified of the drones, but I'm forced to admit I simply don't care. This what must be done to win the war and FDR and Truman were willing to sign off on aerial operations that did far worse. It's effect on civilian populations in the area is not something that can be allowed to deter us.

I think you give yourself away a little there, DF. The fact is that, although I think the drone approach is pretty evil and counterproductive, I am willing to accept it as part of the process of moving the US away from its various hard-right* positions.

But I do care very much that innocent people have their lives destroyed by our approach. And so should you.

re: #238 Dark_Falcon

If we're killing a lot of civilians-- especially children-- and the sole purpose of the attacks is to reduce the number of people attacking us, then it's a bad policy. Continued attacks will continue recruitment.

If we really have very good intel and are actually killing important leaders, human infrastructure, then it's a good policy.

It is nearly impossible for us to judge that. But that is the way with most military campaigns. People are in the way. Nobody gets to go stand on a grassy field and fight the enemy army drawn up neatly in a row anymore. The standard cannot be that we can never kill civilians accidentally, or we'll be unable to fight in any way at all.

But we should still keep in mind that killing civilians causes backlash from the family, friends, and may radicalize people against us who otherwise would have been neutral, or even for us.

It's a dark calculation.

I understand that. I voted for Reagan in 1984 for that reason but I still feel unclean from it to this day. But I had learned what third parties get you working for the Anderson campaign in 1980 so I would never consider voting for a third party if there were any doubt in the race - hence I voted socialist in 1996 but held my nose and voted for Gore in 2000.

Yeah. They're just a means of delivering ordinance. There's not really some big moral break between them doing it and it being done by a pilot on a bomber pressing a button while traveling past the target at close to the speed of sound.

The most depressing thing about contemporary US "foreign violent involvement" (for want of a better phrase) is the complete lack of anything resembling a target or benchmark to determine whether or not we're actually achieving anything.

Strategy: drop bombs on people!

Is it working? Who knows!

When do we get to stop? Who knows!

re: #245 Obdicut

Yeah. They're just a means of delivering ordinance. There's not really some big moral break between them doing it and it being done by a pilot on a bomber pressing a button while traveling past the target at close to the speed of sound.

There is a difference, though, which is that the US public in general is essentially unaware that we're bombing Pakistan, because it isn't ever presented as such, and there are even fewer people around to testify to what's going on.

"My husband's flying missions over Pakistan" just isn't the same thing as "my husband works outside Landry calculating drone flight paths".

Ordinance trends are going towards lower yield bombs for these purposes. A Hellfire has a 20 pound warhead. Mark 82 is 500 pounds. A JDAM is 2000 pounds. I'd rather be near the Hellfire if given a choice.

I don't think that's true. I think that people know that we're using drones and killing people in Pakistan, because it makes headlines a lot. If it doesn't, it's not because we're using drones to do it and not planes.

I think we simply disagree about the public perception of the drone campaign. I think that people are essentially unaware of it and/or don't have an emotional response to it. I mean people in general - obviously there is some portion of the population (in which I include myself) which mostly understands what's going on and is pretty depressed about it.

I agree the actual danger level and moral involvement of the pilots/guides themselves is pretty much the same - I just disagree that there would be no difference in public perception if we were using piloted planes (with all the attendant logistical framework that would presumably imply).

But I'm asking you why you have your theory-- why do you think public perception of bombing campaigns using drones is lower than for human piloted planes?

In both cases, we get the information about it through media sources. The actual number of people flying missions isn't enough to spread information through word of mouth or anything, so the whole "My husband is flying missions" part doesn't make much sense to me.

We flew a ton of missions over Iraq during 'peacetime', blowing stuff up, and eventually it stopped getting reported on so much because we were just always doing it.

We should ask the Taliban and AQ that question. But yes. The fact is that a Hellfire missile results in lowered collateral damage figures. It's not perfect but it's a heck of a lot better than any other delivery system.

re: #242 Obdicut

I agree its a dark calculation, but those are fairly common in war. We cannot physically get at the scum that hide in North Waziristan on the ground, but we cannot leave them the area as a sanctuary. Hence the drone strikes. Drone strikes are the least-worse option we have.

IIRC, they have JDAM kits for smaller bombs now, even possibly the Mark 82. They started on that a while back since the bigger bombs were overkill for most of the targets they were using them on - especially in Afghanistan. An attempt to get the compound/building the Taliban was in without taking out half the village.

A major difference in the last twenty years has been that precision delivery of ordinance has greatly improved. Laser-guided bomb technology started in Vietnam (and trying to use radio-control goes back to WW2.) The Gulf War had bombs being targeted to hit directly on ventilators, and things have improved a bit even from there. And that is just describing what has been done with dropped bombs - the missiles have gotten quite accurate as well.

Don't get me wrong, I think the idea of drones-- of unmanned, semi-robotic things flying around and shooting stuff-- is different from guys in planes doing the same thing. But I don't agree that it makes the public pay less attention or anything. I do think that it allows us to put just materiel on the line rather than our own guy's lives, but that's about it for practical difference-- and even that is basically non-existent given our total air superiority; drone pilots are probably as likely to die from a deep vein thrombosis from sitting down too long as pilots are from being shot down by militants.

I see that media outlets are spinning Ahmadinejad's visit to the UN and how he toned down his message, but he's got more than enough anti-Israel venom in there without naming Israel. There's plenty of references to Zionism and that's a direct reference to Israel, and his interviews indicate that he's not any less anti-Israel or anti-Jewish than he's been in the past.

As he's done in the past, he railed on about the existing world order and encouraged a new one - which is likely to score him points among the nonaligned nations (NAM), which is a huge portion of the General Assembly, even as he and his regime busy themselves with all manner of plans to wreak havoc on the rest of the Middle East by and through their proxies and his ongoing support for Assad in Syria.

Except that in some corners, the voting has already begun.

Voting began in Iowa today. That's considered a swing state.

The full schedule is here . AZ begins Oct 4. Quite a few states start during the week of October 22. Early voting may blunt last minute pushes by the campaigns in some areas, and it changes the campaign schedules to get out the vote as early as possible in those states and it requires a sustained effort to keep up the turnout.

In other word, the early voting complicates just how the campaigns have to do their jobs and figure out their schedules of appearances to maximize their impact.

Oh, and the NFL has tentatively agreed to a new deal with the referees' union. Much rejoicing.

That is until the union refs botch their first major call. It's not as though they were infalliable before (they weren't) - and some of their calls have ended up changing seasons for teams as well as instituting new rules (Tuck rule, out of bounds calls, etc.) What we are more likely to see is more consistency in calls of games, faster calls being made, etc.

Lest we forget, the replay judges during the replacement ref games were the regular ones - they weren't striking. So the eyes in the sky could have overturned the call on the field on possession grounds - but declined to do so. The replay judge couldn't overturn on the potential pass interference though since that wasn't called.

Still, it's interesting that even anti-union types were supporting the union here (it's football!). Fancy that.

Exactly, which is why Romney HQ should have started laying out a specific policy agenda months ago, and reinforced it through speeches and public appearances long before now. It's too late.

The RNC should have been policy driven, laying down clear ideas for what Romney and Ryan would do if elected, and every speech there should have backed them up. It was a week-long national spotlight on the GOP and they blew it. The only thing anyone really remembers anymore is Clint Eastwood yelling at an empty chair.

It's not over yet. A lot can happen between now and the election. But Romney's in that much worse of a position now because he really can't get out there and effectively start telling people what he stands for, considering a lot of folks have already made up their minds and are already voting.

Indeed, John Marshall had a reader pointing out on Tuesday that the whole NFL union ref business was rather clearly demonstrating the lie behind the anti-union argument that non-union replacements are "as good" or better than union workers. That it's a myth that you can grab any schlub off the street and expect him to do the same job at the same proficiency than the guy who's been doing it for years.

One point of possibility is emotional investment. Piloted aircraft have two such points: the potential risk to the pilot, and the 'urge to fly' a lot of people experience. Both mean there's a small but possibly significant increase in attention.

A machine doing a machine's job - which even though there's still a person controlling from a distance is what's happening - doesn't bring the emotional investment. Therefore what happens in conjunction or consequence isn't carried.

Ahmadinejad’s men go on NYC discount shopping spree for shampoo, soap, vitamins and shoes

After stirring up controversy at the United Nations after unveiling his vision for a 'new world order', Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad decided to spend some time socking up the Manhattan high-life.

But as the dictator made himself at home at the luxurious Warwick hotel, his hired underlings were rushing around town to snap up bargains and products they can't get back home at discount stores.

Meanwhile, his fellow Iranian delegates were visiting American chains including the Payless shoe store, Costco, Walgreens and Duane Reade to stock up on shampoo, soap, vitamins and cheap clothing.

Is there a soap shortage in Tehran?

Why yes, there is...

A man assigned to work with the Iranians told the Daily News: 'Since they are under sanctions, they can’t get this stuff. Their money is weak compared to the dollar.'

...This has made it difficult for Iranians to get hold of any foreign goods or imported products.

The source added that one Iranian bought a $40 pair of children's shoes at the Payless store on Fifth Avenue but the purchase nearly wiped out his spending money for the trip.

At a Harlem Costco, they bought an assortment of wholesale shampoos before heading to a drugstore where they purchased more than a dozen bottles of vitamins and Tylenol.

Heh.

Authentic Entertainment, currently subsidiary of Endemol, was originally founded in 2000 by Lauren Lexton and Tom Rogan, who were familiar with each other in their work as freelance reality production staffers.[11] It wasn't until 2010 that talk of Endemol owning a large stake in the production company became serious, as Endemol had approached them several years prior without success. The deal has since been finalized, and has been valued at US$60–70 million in unverified reports.[12]

Authentic has been named to Realscreen Magazine’s “Global 100” list in 2007,[13] 2008,[14] 2009,[15] and 2010.[16]

Iranian diplomat threatened by angry mob near UN

NEW YORK — Police escorted an Iranian diplomat from a Manhattan street Wednesday after angry protesters surrounded and threatened him near the United Nations.

Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast was walking near the U.N. when he was noticed and confronted by the mob, said New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne. The Iranian flagged down police officers, who helped him get to a safe spot.

Browne said the threats were believed to have been verbal.

...Protesters wore yellow vests with photos of people they say were massacred. One sign read: "Fallen for Freedom in Iran."

Welcome to NY Ramin!

Not really beyond the historical value. Which implies that "Hoffa" has some sort of cultural value that is currently higher than "Earhart". Though in the long run a better understanding of the final fate of an aviation pioneer is of more historical value than that of a corrupt union boss.

Think it has more to do with the mystery than with the actual person in question. Earhart's fame has lasted in large part due to the mystery of her disappearance. Same holds true with Hoffa and D.B. Cooper. If you could close the book on any of them tomorrow, the mystery disappears and it just becomes another page in the history book.

Report: FBI waiting for access to Benghazi

TRIPOLI, Libya, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- FBI agents still are waiting to enter Benghazi, Libya, to begin investigating the deaths of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three others, officials said.

Senior law enforcement officials said the investigators were in Tripoli awaiting approval to travel to Benghazi, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other diplomatic staff employees were killed Sept. 11 at the U.S. Consulate in the eastern Libyan city, CNN reported.

In addition, the crime scene has not been secured, prompting concerns about how useful any information gathered will be, officials said.

FBI agents made a request through the U.S. State Department for the crime scene to be secured but nothing has happened, CNN reported.

Last Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters an FBI team had arrived in Libya earlier in the week.

FBI investigators interviewed members of the U.S. State Department and other U.S. government personnel in Libya at the time of the attack, but the FBI's request to directly question individuals in Libyan custody was denied, CNN said.

It's not safe for criminal investigators yet. If FBI agents get killed or taken hostage it only makes problems worse. This does underscore the problems with treating these situations as a criminal investigation. It's too dangerous and it's not really what the FBI is designed or equipped to do. Mexico captures top Zetas drug lord, in major blow to cartel

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's navy has captured "Zeta-50," a top leader of a faction of the recently divided Zetas drug cartel, in an operation in the city of San Luis Potosi, news reports said late Wednesday.

"A person who is presumed to be, and acknowledges being, Ivan Velazquez Caballero, was captured," the navy said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.

The capture of Velazquez, also known by the alias "El Taliban," would deal a major blow to the fractious Zetas group and raise new doubts about the future of the criminal power dynamic in Mexico's violent northeast region.

Authorities indicated that they would provide more information Thursday on Velasquez's arrest, as he was being transferred to Mexico City, reports said.

Top Ahmadinejad aide arrested in Iran during president's U.S. visit

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s top press adviser was taken into custody to begin serving a six-month jail sentence after being convicted of publishing material deemed insulting to the country’s supreme leader.

Ali Akbar Javanfekr, who is also the head of the state-run IRNA news agency, is one of dozens of Ahmadinejad’s allies detained since April 2011 in the fallout from a political feud between the president and the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran’s hardline political establishment slapped down Ahmadinejad and his supporters after the president briefly challenged an order from the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over the choice of intelligence chief.

The semiofficial Fars news agency said judicial agents detained Javanfekr late Wednesday. IRNA said Javanfekr was arrested as Ahmadinejad, who had shielded his press adviser in the past from arrest, began his speech at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

If it was a rural area it wouldn't be a problem but this is a city. Lot's of people, houses, businesses. No way to tell who's around or what they may be up to. Not really a problem, the FBI is probably just for show anyways. I'm sure other agencies are working on it and making progress.

Last night CNN said they went by and there was just a lock on the front door. Nobody was guarding it. Not even Libyan security.

The LDS Church's massive recent ad campaign probably helped dodge a bullet wrt this election. I'm sure the YouTube ads, etc, weren't coincidental: Christians who believe that "Satan" is tempting people off the path would normally be very wary of any faith that changes the standard Christian narrative.

Carved From Meteorite, This Thousand-Year-Old Statue Was Taken From Tibet by the Nazi SS

Thought to stem from the work of the 11th century Bon culture, this 22-pound statue of the Buddhist god Vaiśravana has a storied history, say scientists. It careened about in space as an asteroid before crashing into Asia. There, it was picked up and carved by the early Tibetans. The resulting statue later passed into the hands of the Nazi Schutzstaffel in the late 1930s.

In some other traditions this will be known as the "Antichrist."

Unless we use it to cover up an allies warcrimes...

Katyn.

This story is another non-revelation.

You are aware, I trust, that this cover-up got only as far as the end of the war? Even during the war, Soviet culpability was widely publicized in the west. The reports from the two American PoWs that form the gist of the new "revelations" were the subject of extensive testimony at Congressional hearings in 1951. The PoWs, Colonel John H. Van Vliet and Captain Donald Stewart, had been taken to the site by the Germans. Both concluded that the Soviets were responsible. The 1951 hearings themselves concluded that the Soviets were responsible and, to my knowledge, this was never officially contradicted or challenged in the US during subsequent years.
From the CIA website,Katyn: Stalin's Killing Fields
This has been posted since 2007.
The newly released documents "prove" that the western allied leaders made a conscious decision not to confront the Soviets over the massacre while the war was in progress, but this has hardly been in doubt since the time it happened. Churchill directly mentions this troubling decision, and defends it, in his autobiography.

Iran warns citizens of the dangers of travel to Canada

Iran's foreign ministry says "Islamphobia" and "Iranophobia" are growing in Canada and Iranians who come to Canada could face possible arrest, attacks, expulsion and murder.

The government also warns Iranians to be careful not to walk into traps laid by criminal groups.

"Given the fact that Iran has no longer an embassy in Canada and some anti-Iranian groups in the country have a good opportunity to take revenge on the Iranian nationals, the nationals should be vigilant about the issue," the Tehran Times reported.

More cartoon attacks thwarted!

Iranian daily Shargh shut down for publishing "insulting" cartoon

Iranian media report that one day after the scandal over the cartoon, the newspaper was shut down on Wednesday night by the order of the Press Supervisory Board.

Mahmoud Alizadeh Tabatabayi, the attorney for the Shargh newspaper, reported that the authorities have also issued a warrant for the arrest of Mehdi Rahmanian, the director of publication, for whom he is trying to secure a release on bail.

The controversy has risen over a cartoon titled "blindfold" that was published in a special issue commemorating the Iran-Iraq War. The cartoon shows people standing in line, with each putting a blindfold on the person in front.

The Minister of Guidance announced that the cartoon was an insult to "the soldiers of the sacred defence", which is how the establishment refers to the eight-year Iran-Iraq War.

Parliament also condemned the cartoon in a statement, which has so far been signed by 120 MPs.

A spy software that captures couples having sex

WASHINGTON: A software programme developed to track the locations of rented computers secretly collected confidential and personal information about consumers, including medical records, bank statements and even webcam pictures of couples engaged in sex, the Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday in a settlement that bars eight companies from any further cyber spying.

...When an add-on programme known as Detective Mode was activated, the software could capture computer screen shots, furtively take photos using the computer's webcam, log key strokes and trick consumers into providing personal contact information, according to the FTC.

Detective Mode could gather data every two minutes that a computer is connected to the internet until the programme is directed to stop. The information would then be forwarded from DesignerWare's servers to the rental store that activated the programme, according to the FTC.

"In numerous instances, Detective Mode webcam activations have taken pictures of children, individuals not fully clothed, and couples engaged in sexual activities," the FTC said.

I've tried to be polite in the past, but I have to say this is the most ridiculous of Brendan Nyhan's many ridiculous columns attempting to deny or play down the obvious about Mitt Romney's campaign and to debunk accurate media characterizations of Romney.

First of all, despite Nyhan's wishing it were so, the Romney aide's Etch-a-Sketch comment is hardly a distant memory. It's brought up all the time in media reports and columns and posted comments. It's kept alive by Romney's constant revisions of previous positions.

The initial stories about Romney's leaked video that I saw, in the NY Times, NPR, Yahoo News, etc., all mentioned prominently that about 47% of Americans make too little to pay federal income tax. I saw plenty of context in the articles I read.

Nyhan's most ridiculous and astonishing assertion is questioning whether Romney's leaked comments reveal his "true character or beliefs." Who should we believe -- Nyhan, or our own eyes and ears? Romney said what he said in unmistakable terms at an event that he thought was off the record. What he said is perfectly consistently with his trickle-down economic proposal to drastically lower taxes on wealthy people, and most likely to raise them on lower-income people. (BTW, conservative Times columnist David Brooks also bashed Romney for his comments).

Brendan, you think he was just "crafting his message" for that rich audience and it doesn't necessarily represent what he thinks? Read the comments again, pal. Play those comments for a cross-section of American voters and see whether they think those comments represent Romney's real views.

Contrary to what Nyhan advises, journalists should not resist the urge to engage in evidence-based analysis, as they have done with this story. But I would say with this column Brendan Nyhan forfeits the right to tell journalists anything about how to do their job.

Heh.

Demonstrators attempting to rush the U.S. embassy were held back by hundreds of police officers. Thursday's demonstration marks the second in as many weeks.

In reality, however, people act differently in different contexts. In particular, politicians are likely to present a donor-friendly version of themselves and their views when it is in their strategic interest to do so. It’s useful to know what Romney says in private to donors, but we will never know whether those statements actually reflect his true beliefs. Anti-Semitism at Northeastern University

Americans for Peace and Tolerance (APT) today released a 30 minute video showing how Northeastern Professor Denis Sullivan and other Northeastern faculty abuse academic freedom to promote anti-Israel lies and anti-Semitism as defined by the U.S. State Department.

Sullivan is a tenured professor and director of the Northeastern Middle East Center for Peace, Culture and Development. The video examines Professor Sullivan's lectures, invited guests, reading lists and student trips to the Middle East, all of which seem designed to provide students with a one-sided view of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

"It seems clear that Professor Sullivan has built his department to inculcate students with a hostile and demonized view of the Jewish state, with repeated comparisons to the Nazis, Dr. Charles Jacobs, APT president said. "Indeed, viewers will see that some of the core themes promoted in his courses are plainly anti-Semitic, and are outright lies."

Sullivan allegedly also introduced the students and the university to virulent anti-Semitic Arab officials and religious leaders.

497 Shiplord Kirel  Thu, Sep 27, 2012 10:08:05am

Back to the subject of this string.

The supernaturalist aspect of evangelical Christianity probably doesn't get as much attention as it should, given that these people essentially control one of the two major political parties in this country. The belief that supernatural forces routinely influence the real world is a cornerstone of most fundamentalist Christian doctrines. There are some exceptions, like the Disciples of Christ, but these are a distinct minority.

This kind of cargo cult doctrine is pervasive on the political right and it may be the real source of the alternate world thinking we see in the Republican Party. They literally believe in magic. This has all sorts of implications, what students of logic call "assumption of the consequent." If A is true, what else could be true? If God directly intervenes in our finances, for example, wouldn't it follow that the rich have His special blessing and endorsement? We can see that some of these people are evil and undeserving, but who are we to question the ways of God?

If the Earth is really only 6000 years old, the scientific consensus on this is worthless and proof that a worldwide scientific conspiracy of suppression and deceit is possible. There is therefore no need to take them at their word over vaccines, climate change, or the physiology of conception.

Bullshit again. This is about how George Bush manipulated the press

unmasks the tactics of deception and media manipulation that George W. Bush has used to sell his agenda to the American people.

From his campaigns for tax cuts to the debate over war in Iraq, President Bush has employed an unprecedented onslaught of half-truths and strategically ambiguous language to twist and distort the facts. Fritz, Keefer, and Nyhan's powerful critique of Bush's record of policy deception explains why the media has failed to hold him accountable and demonstrates the threat these tactics pose to honest political debate.

This is the essential book for every citizen who wants to understand how George W. Bush has misled the nation and why, if left unchallenged, all the President's spin could soon become standard practice -- a devastating development for our democracy.

George W. Bush's dishonesty is different. Rather than simply lying, he has subtly and systematically attempted to deceive the nation about most of his major policy proposals. On issues ranging from tax cuts to stem cells to the debate over the war in Iraq, he has consistently twisted the truth beyond recognition in order to promote his policies.

Remarkably, he has done so while generally avoiding obviously false statements. Instead, Bush consistently uses well-designed phrases and strategically crafted arguments to distract, deceive, and mislead. The result is that all but the most careful listeners end up believing something completely untrue, while proving the President has lied is usually impossible.

Unlike famous White House dissemblers of the past, Bush almost never explicitly claims that black is white or day is night. Instead, he deceives the public with partial truths and misleading assertions. So rather than saying day is night, George W. Bush will focus on an instance of a solar eclipse or remind Americans that people who work graveyard shifts are asleep. Both might be true, but without the proper context, they're highly misleading. Because Bush's statements are so often constructed in this way, he has walked away from one deceptive claim after another scot-free.

These tactics originate in public relations, a field that has become extremely skilled at promoting a message regardless of its factual accuracy. Previous presidents have also drawn on PR, of course, but Bush has gone far beyond his predecessors, systematically employing these dishonest strategies in nearly every major policy debate. At this point, the difference between corporate marketing and White House communications has largely disappeared.

That Romney was allegedly just catering his message for the rich donors when he spoke of the 47% makes him out to be even more despicable than if he really felt that way about the people who don't pay Federal income taxes.

Its not much of defense if any to say he doesn't really mean what he says.

Gas prices bottomed out around $1.61 in 4Q2008. They were under $1.86 when President Obama was sworn in.

The current national average is far less than 3x the price when he took office. It's more than doubled though, but the prices aren't out of line from the spikes seen during President Bush's second term.

But as has been pointed out numerous times by people far smarter than me - Presidents have little to no effect on gas prices. And the price at the outset of his term was due to the collapsing world economy and the resulting decline in demand. Now, with an economy that has warmed back up, demand has increased and supplies are tight. Producers are able to get more per gallon than during slack demand. Basic economics. Higher gas prices are the result of a rebounding world economy.

A new recession would likely result in a drop in gas prices that may help ease the pain at the pump, but it would signal that the economy is suffering in other ways - both domestically and abroad.

Note too that if China's appetite for gas increases even the slightest bit, it would have a tremendous effect on gas prices (which is what helped spark the runup during Bush's second term. It's why carmakers are rushing to the Chinese market to gain market share, and why the Chinese market is a significant player in global fuel prices.

re: #536 NJDhockeyfan

That's why the Arab/Muslim population of East Jerusalem keeps growing. The Jewish population of East Jerusalem is growing faster.

See [Link: www.israelnationalnews.com...] for data from last year:

The data show that in 2011 Jerusalem's population was estimated at 801,000, of which 64 percent were Jews and other non-Arabs and 36 percent were Arabs.

There were 497,000 Jews in Jerusalem in 2011, 281,000 Muslims, 14,000 Christians and 9,000 with no stated religious affiliation. In total, since 1967 and until the end of 2011 the city's population grew by 200 percent: the Jewish population increased by 157 percent and the Arab population increased by 327 percent.

The data also show that in 2010, 474,000 people (Jews and Arabs) lived that in areas that were added to Jerusalem in 1967. These 474,000 inhabitants represent 60 percent of the population of Jerusalem.

192,000 Jews and other non-Arabs lived in neighborhoods of areas added to Jerusalem in 1967, accounting for 41 percent of the population in those areas. 280,900 Arabs, which constituted 59 percent of the population, lived in these neighborhoods.

The largest Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem, according to the statistics, are Ramot with 41,400 residents, Pisgat Ze’ev with 40,400 residents and Gilo with 29,600 residents.

As for employment in 2011, the statistics show that the employment rate in Jerusalem stood at 46 percent, compared to 57 percent in all of Israel. The relatively low rate in Jerusalem is mainly due to the low participation in the work force among hareidi men and Arab women, as well as the relatively high rate of people aged 15 to 20 in Jerusalem who study in schools and yeshivas or serve in the army, and therefore are not working and are not looking for work.

Only in Palestinian double-speak can ethnic cleansing result in an increased population. But it's another way in which Palestinian propagandists coopt language to their own ends - debasing the very meaning of those words and terms.

That said, it is also true that Israeli policy on Jerusalem construction and growth is limiting where and how Arab neighborhoods can expand, while there are preferential policies for Jewish neighborhoods.

Gas prices are like a speed governor on the economy. When the economy slows and demand falls, gas prices drop and that helps spur new growth. When the economy warms up, demand for gas increases along with the price, and that slows new growth. Growth can never be sustainable when it is dependent on limited resources.

The only way economic growth can be sustainable is to base it on conserving limited resources as in finding ways to waste less of it.

Fischer: Thanks to DADT Repeal, We Can 'Expect to See More Instances of Pedophilia' in the Military

On yesterday's edition of "Focal Point," Bryan Fischer cited the arrest of a protocol officer at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida for allegedly trying to entice a 17-year-old boy into sexual activity to declare that, thanks to to the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, we can "expect to see more instances of pedophilia now in the United States military."

Since, Fischer falsely claimed, gays have a "proclivity for the abuse of children," now that they are "allowed to openly serve and can't be disciplined in any way for what they do," we can now expect more reports of pedophilia in the military "because they've got a protected place to serve there":

The officer Fischer is bitching about is a 49 year old Lt Col. DADT was repealed a year ago. Connection fail.

Fox & Friends: The Polls Are Rigged!

Parroting the latest Republican meme that national polls oversample Democrats, host Steve Doocy threw in to the mix the possibility that pollsters are using voter turnout from 2008 to guide who they should be asking. And why would the “left-based mainstream media” do this? Doocy had an answer.

“Well, two reasons,” he said. “One, perhaps, to keep Mitt Romney’s donors from coughing up more cash. And two, to keep people from doing early voting.”

Co-host Gretchen Carlson had another theory: “I do think there’s a subliminal message in these daily polling things, which isn’t always great for the voter.”

One problem with the theories: FOX’s own polling also shows Obama surging in swing states. A survey released by the network just last week showed the president leading Romney by no fewer than five points in Ohio, Virginia and Florida.

Yeah, no doubt. There is an NFL bylaw that says the TV announcers have to talk about Ed Hochuli's biceps and what great shape he is in for an old dude that can't see shit. ha

NFL game officials are graded by the NFL after each game.

If there is a call made during a game which calls for further review; after the end of the game, a request is made for video of that call to be sent to the NFL League office. If a game official gets too many calls wrong they are demoted, say Referee to Back Judge, or even dismissed as a NFL game official.

The fan who "clearly sees that the game official made a bad call" forgets that they are viewing the action from above in the stands or on their TV; augmented by various angles of re-play.

If said fan ever stood on the sidelines and watched 5'10" to 6' tall game officials monitor the play of 22 players in *real* time, running around, most of which are 6'4" or taller, wearing bulky football equipment and weighing in excess of 240 lbs; they might gain better appreciation for how difficult being an NFL game official is.
