Protest of global program grows locally as Tea Party links 'smart growth' to big government

The Passaic County freeholders canceled membership in a leading environmental organization.

Wayne Township Council members passed a resolution condemning “extreme environmentalism.”

In Morris and Ocean counties, freeholders adopted resolutions to quell concerns about a decades-old United Nations green program.

Each measure is a response to growing public protest over the U.N. program, known as Agenda 21, which promotes conservation of natural resources or sustainable development. Opponents believe the United Nations is using Agenda 21 to push “smart growth” policies that will limit development and encroach on Americans’ property rights and local rule.

[...]

Harold Seneker of Fair Lawn said he did not know much about Agenda 21, but he became interested after hearing Walker’s speech and planned to learn more.

“We all have a central feeling,” Seneker said. “We want our country back.”

AGENDA 21 !!!!

Last couple of nights I linked some Vivaldi music - the catalog of his music is so large one could spend years going through it.

Closer to our time, a composer who also wrote quite a bit but whose work is largely ignored is Heitor Villa-Lobos. Most people can recognize one or two of his compositions (even if they can't recall the name), yet the catalog of his work numbers in the hundreds. I suspect he gets more respect in Latin America than he does in the Anglosphere.

Anyway, here is something special: Villa-Lobos' "Choros no. 10" subtitled "Rasga o Coracao" (see the Villa-lobos dedicated site for more information about videos of the piece). There are a few recordings available at Amazon and iTunes, but here is a recording supposedly of a performance led by the composer - it premiered in 1926 but the recording is of a quality that I assume comes from a later date ( he didn't die until 1959.)

The piece sounds modern yet it is approachable by those who simply want to listen to music that is enjoyable.

Enjoy:

Another attempt to meet the wingnuts at their own level:

Romney is a secret Zoroastrian!
Ayn Rand was his real mother!
His dog Seamus was named for an IRA terrorist!
Ann's make-up is made from baby chicks and fluffy kittens!
Mitt's horses have better housing than 99.9% of American taxpayers!

True to their wingnut inspiration, all of these were made up from thin air (except possibly the last one, not sure about Mitt's stables).

I thought I'd post a link to the piece he's best known for, just for context, in a very nice performance by Kiri te Kanawa:

This is the 5th in a series of 9 Bachianas Brasileiras, in which Villa-Lobos applied Baroque harmonies and counterpoint to the music of his native Brazil. I wonder if he felt about this the way some composers seem to about the one signature piece they can never put behind them (Ravel and his Pavane for a Dead Princess and Rachmaninov and his Prelude in C# minor come to mind.)

12 Hercules Grytpype-Thynneghazi  Fri, Sep 28, 2012 11:33:23pm

By the way, Charles, clicking on a YouTube link in preview mode really screws up the preview, at least in Chrome. The scroll function is disabled, and also posting, since (at least in the case of the comment above) the "Post it" button is pushed off the bottom of the screen and can't be scrolled to.

And that is just the aria part of the piece. IIRC, the London Olympics played it as the handover music to the Rio Olympics for 2016, too.

Most people are probably more familiar with Brazilian popular music than the works of Villa-Lobos.

Here's an mp3 of the "danca" part, the second part of the piece, which most people don't hear:

It's not uncommon for a single section of a larger work to find fame, while the rest lay unnoticed as time goes by.

Anyway, Villa-Lobos was prolific. Some contemporary jazz musicians have used his work (e.g., George Benson I think) as a starting point.

re: #18 researchok

Well, those Villa-Lobos pieces previously linked are supposed to be some of his better known, so they aren't supposed to be "obscure".

But, if you want obscure here is one: Villa-Lobos' "Naufrágio de Kleônicos", a symphonic poem which translates (via Google) as "Wreck of Kleônicos". It has an Appleby catalog number W111. According to the Villa-Lobos fan site, the following is the only modern performance, and the only recording currently available. I've not searched the entire 'net to determine if this is true, but I've not been able to find another recording.

It's a really pretty piece, maybe one of his most beautiful compositions. Reportedly a section of it was later set apart by Villa-Lobos as a separate work, which is more often recorded. (See the Youtube video at the end.)

Recording notes that I found:

Recorded live at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro on November 17, 2004, at the 42nd Villa-Lobos Festival.Orquestra Sinfônica do Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.

Enjoy:

This might be one of the most telling pieces of information regarding Rep. Todd Akin's - and his supporters - world view.

Akin consultant compares him to cult leader

(CNN) - A consultant for Rep. Todd Akin likened the Senate candidate to David Koresh on Friday, saying Akin's ability to withstand GOP pressure to withdraw from the Missouri race was like the cult leader's resistance during the deadly 1993 standoff with federal authorities.
[...]
"The first day or two where it was like the Waco with the David Koresh situation where they're trying to smoke him out with the SWAT teams and the helicopters and the bad Nancy Sinatra records. Then here comes day two and you realize the guy's not coming out of the bunker. Listen, Todd has shown his principle to the voters," Conway, CEO of The Polling Company, said a radio show hosted by Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council.

This came from one of his lead consultants, who described Akin favorably with a religious zealot who was responsible for the death of over 75 people.

What's next for these people? A quote from a rightwing congressman describing Anders Breivik's mass-murder spree as a "principled" action?

Iranian news agency duped by Onion story on Obama poll

Iran's leading news agency published a mock poll that claimed rural whites in the U.S. favored Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over president Barack Obama.

The mock poll was originally published on a popular U.S. media site, The Onion.

The FARS news agency—which touts itself as Iran's leading independent news agency while others note its ties to government—published much of the made-up poll that first appeared in the U.S. parody website.

The Onion site quoted a fictitious Gallup Poll that noted "77 percent of rural Caucasian voters...would much rather go to a baseball game or have a beer with Ahmadinejad...than spend time with Obama."

FARS led its story with that statement and even quoted someone from the Onion piece, West Virginia resident Swiderski, saying of Ahmadinejad, "I like him better."

Oops.

I think West's ad will likely work better. Most of his district will care more about about Murphy having driven drunk than about West having brutally interrogated an Iraqi. Biased, you say? Yes, it is, but not racially. It's bias in favor of what happens locally and the fact that Murphy is more likely to reoffend than West.

Murphy didn't drive drunk. He was 19,got hammered at a bar and was charged with disorderly conduct and having a fake license. So he was a college kid who used a fake ID to buy drinks in a bar as a teenager. Not cool, but 19 yr olds aren't known for their good judgement when out with a bunch of friends.

What West did got him thrown out of the military. I think there's kind of a difference here. If the Murphy campaign is smart(and they seem to be)they'll point out West's service record. Which isn't stellar,to say the least.

There's more motivation and energy from the left to protest a president like Bush on security/freedom/war issues when he's also not doing anything for them domestically. Obama, on the other hand, has done pretty well pushing the pendulum back left on most domestic issues, so he generates more feelings of disappointment than righteous indignation in the areas where he's "failed". And disappointment doesn't put bodies in the streets.

In 2008,it took me about 17-18 dollars to fill up the car I had then,a Honda Fit. Approx a 10 gal tank. I have a little Hyundai now,the tank is a teeny bit bigger than the Fit, it's been costing me close to 40 to fill it now. The only reason I remember is because my husband lost his job in 08 and we were watching every penny, keeping receipts and figuring out where to cut expenses.

I don't have a bunch of kids or a lot of stuff to tote around,so a little car works for me. I think they're more fun to drive too.

I had an MG Midget at one point. That thing was a street legal go-kart. I actually would look over the windshield when I could (ala the Flintstones).

What I don't get is the sharp drop during the election cycle in 2008, then sharp gain.

My typical answer is the recession. Lower demand with no good future outlook. You can see more here. Gasoline prices are and will remain erratic and high regardless of what politicians may promise. Low gasoline prices are not a good indicator.

THERE was a post on my fb today stating that the price of gas was $1.80 when Obama took office.

My first thought was --really? I don't remember $1.80 --in nearly a decade. I thought about looking it up and thought, why? When it is a GOP candidate, the response would be --the POTUS has nothing to do with the price of gas.

And we'd have another round of Congressional Hearings on the price of gas. I think once in the spring every year is enough.

Yeah, go back to those dark days at the tail end of the Bush presidency when the economy was teetering on collapse and it all just kind of stopped there for a while. That is why gas was cheap at the time. It wasn't because the economy was doing well.

I thinks it's technically distilled water. For now I have it draining straight into the plants but later this winter I'm going to invest in a large water tank to put in the basement. Hopefully I can store enough rain water (and distilled water) to get me through the summer. My rain barrels ran dry by June this year so I didn't make it very far.

Will Waterboarding Make a Comeback?
By ANDREW ROSENTHAL

Last September, Mitt Romney’s advisers were so determined to attack President Obama from every direction and to revive long-discredited neo-con theories about interrogation that they actually encouraged the candidate to come out strongly pro-torture in his presidential campaign.

In what The Times’ Charlie Savage describes as a “near-final draft” of a memo, Romney advisers denounced Mr. Obama’s executive order on interrogation (which instructed interrogators to hew to the Army Field Manual, i.e. to legal techniques). They also urged Mr. Romney to pledge that, upon taking office, he would rescind that order...

They encourage it here in Portland. With urban expansion and copious amounts of winter rainfall the sewer systems can't keep up. They will pay you a small fee and cut a bit off your water bill for disconnecting your downspouts from the city sewers.

Interesting but sobering...

Rising Government Restrictions

The U.S. score on the Government Restrictions Index rose from 1.6 in the year ending in mid-2009 to 2.7 in the year ending in mid-2010, moving the U.S. from the low category of restrictions to the moderate category for the first time in the four years studied. (GRI scores 2.4 or higher are categorized as moderate by this study, while scores 4.5 or higher are categorized as high.)

During the period from mid-2009 to mid-2010, a number of the sources used in the study reported an increase in the number of incidents at the state and local level in which members of some religious groups faced restrictions on their ability to practice their faith. This included incidents in which individuals were prevented from wearing certain religious attire or symbols, including beards, in some judicial settings or in prisons, penitentiaries or other correctional facilities. For instance, the U.S. Department of Justice reported that it was pursuing a lawsuit in federal court against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and various California officials on behalf of a Sikh prison inmate who, in March 2010, had been ordered to trim his facial hair in violation of his religious beliefs. The Justice Department said the state’s inmate grooming policy “imposed a substantial burden” on the man’s ability to exercise his faith.2

Some religious groups in the U.S. also faced difficulties in obtaining zoning permits to build or expand houses of worship, religious schools or other religious institutions. For instance, in May 2010, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling that the Boulder County Commissioners had discriminated against the Rocky Mountain Christian Church by denying it permits to expand its school and worship facilities even though the commissioners had issued permits to a nearby secular school for a similar expansion.3 The appeals court agreed with the lower court that the commissioners’ actions violated the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA), which protects individuals and institutions from religious discrimination in land-use decisions and protects the religious rights of prisoners and other persons confined to institutions.4 The Justice Department — in a report marking the 10th anniversary of the passage of RLUIPA — noted that 31 of its 51 land-use investigations from 2000-2010 involved Christian groups; most of the remaining 20 investigations involved religious minorities, including Muslims (seven investigations), Jews (six), Buddhists (three) and Hindus (one).5

From mid-2009 to mid-2010, at least one state sought to restrict the application of Islamic or sharia law. In the spring of 2010, Oklahoma legislators proposed an amendment to the state constitution that would have banned state courts from considering sharia law or international law in their decisions.6 (The constitutional change was later approved in a statewide vote, but a federal appeals court struck down the amendment in January 2012, saying it violated the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.7)

And, for the first time, one of the primary sources used in this study reported that some level of government in the U.S. had imposed limits on conversion. A report by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief mentions an incident at the Southport Correctional Facility, an ultra-maximum security prison near Elmira, N.Y., in which a prisoner was denied the right to change his religious designation to Muslim. The inmate complained that he could not participate in Ramadan observances without an official change to his religious designation in the New York Department of Correctional Services’ records.

Guess which country was rated as having more fewer restrictions than the U.S. in this report?

That evil gun hating, socialist state of Canada.

Go figure. :P

Let's see...43 months = 3 years and 7 months. Sept 2012 minus that is roughly February 2009. Let's assume it was drawn a month before it was published, so that pushes it back to January, 2009.

You know, the month when history of everything bad in America began.

I think "haven't found a job" is alluding to the fact that Obama has allegedly done little in terms of job creation for Americans.

In other words, he hasn't found US any jobs.

Weirdest use of the term "hasn't found a job" I've ever seen.

Yea, let's destroy our central banking system and go back to banks doing their own bank notes. That will turn out *so* well. (Idiots)

And more not understanding that the drug legalization rhetoric is to turn over enforcement to the states. Which will not lead to legalization in at least 45 of them - more likely to go the other way with making the possession and use penalties higher than they currently are.

Algeria is proposing an initiative under the auspices of the United Nations that would limit freedom of expression in order to prevent the stigmatizing and denigrating of Islam.

Romney's Plan to Win Virginia: Lyme Disease
—By Tim Murphy
| Fri Sep. 28, 2012 7:53 AM PDT

...

We were confused too. But it turns out that Romney has, over the last few months, actually made Lyme disease—the bacterial disease transmitted to humans from deer ticks—part of his pitch to suburban Virginia voters. It started back in August, when he sent a public letter (paid for by the campaign) to Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) commending him for his push to create a "Tick-Borne Diseases Advisory Committee." "More needs to be done," Romney wrote. "As president, I will work to ensure that more attention is focused on this important issue ... We need to ensure that all scientific viewpoints concerning this illness can be heard."

Muslim ministers call for laws against religious hatred

Muslim foreign ministers called on Friday for laws against incitement to “religious hatred” as they condemned an American-made film mocking Islam that sparked deadly protests.

Ministers from the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said that freedom of expression had to be used with “responsibility.”
....
In a statement, the ministers condemned “intolerance, discrimination, profiling, negative stereotyping, stigmatization, religious hatred and violence against Muslims, as well as denigration of their religion” caused by the release of the film and cartoons of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH].

“These Islamophobic acts stand in violation of the freedom of religion and belief, guaranteed by international human rights instruments, and have deeply offended” Muslims around the world, the statement added.

“We acknowledge the importance of freedom of expression, but at the same time stress the need to ensure that this freedom should be exercised by all with responsibility and in accordance with the relevant international human rights laws.”

The ministers called for “global awareness about the dangerous implications of incitement to religious hatred, discrimination and violence.”

Nigerian Muslim women chased from Meca: they need men to travel

• Saudi Arabia on Friday began expelling more than a thousand Nigerian women on religious pilgrimage to the country because they had arrived without male guardians, the first time it sent back such a large group in enforcement of strict rules governing women.

The government ministry that oversees the hajj pilgrimage said the 1,100 women had violated a long-standing law by travelling without an immediate male relative, adding that females of all nationalities who are younger than 45 must have a male guardian during the hajj pilgrimage.

In 1836, while John Quincy Adams was in the House of Representatives (after being President--they didn't use to go on Permanent Retiree status), a rule was passed that nobody could present an anti-slavery petition.

So he presented an anti-slavery petition every chance he could. (Because of Parliamentary procedures, there were ways around the gag rule.) He received death threats, but he wasn't going to be silenced.

In all House proceedings, Adams was purposely contentious and controversial, using every available means to achieve his objective of stirring up debate on slavery. He intentionally baited irate House members to censure him for his conduct. When they did, he employed the time granted him for defense to expound his views on slavery-related issues. On one such occasion, Adams spoke for two weeks on his defense and threatened to go on for another unless the House tabled the censure resolution against him. The resolution was tabled, and Adams emerged doubly successful, for he had used those two weeks to denounce slaveholders for abusing slaves as well as free abolitionists, whose constitutional rights of petition, speech, and the press had been circumscribed. One House rival, Representative Henry Wise, called Adams "the acutest, the astutest, the archest enemy of southern slavery that ever existed."

Can't decide whether he's a chip off of the old block in regards to Mom, Dad, or both, but I can't imagine either one of them passively submitting to being silenced, either.

Blasphemy in Russia may soon be punishable by jail time

“All these actions are aimed at destabilizing the centuries-old spiritual and moral foundations of Russia, discrediting traditional values and, in essence, serve to ignite civil strife and undermine the country’s sovereignty,” the Duma resolution said.

The declaration has no binding force but sets the tone for legislation that Yaroslav Nilov, head of the Duma committee on civic and religious groups, said would be presented to parliament as early as this week.

Nilov said a proposed amendment would introduce criminal responsibility for offences against religious beliefs and feelings and impose a jail term of up to three years.

Ron Paul and the Libertarians | Cato @ Liberty

Kirchick identified Conor Friedersdorf of the Atlantic as a libertarian who supported Ron Paul despite the bigotry in the newsletters that bore his name. But in fact Friedersdorf wrote a long and tortured article acknowledging the “egregiously offensive . . . racially bigoted . . . execrable” content of the newsletters. He went on to say that there was still a good case for supporting the only candidate who has consistently opposed the Iraq War, indefinite detention, drone strikes, anti-Muslim bigotry, and the war on drugs. Other libertarians who know about the newsletters are no doubt making similar calculations. And as David Weigel of Slate notes today, many less-engaged voters — such as American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson — still haven’t heard about the whole issue; they like Ron Paul for the issues he talks about, smaller government, budget cuts, sound money, and noninterventionism.

Did you mean 'right wing talking points?'

Nope, left.

Tell certain liberals and progressives that you can't bring yourself to vote for a candidate who opposes gay rights, or who doesn't believe in Darwinian evolution, and they'll nod along. Say that you'd never vote for a politician caught using the 'n'-word, even if you agreed with him on more policy issues than his opponent, and the vast majority of left-leaning Americans would understand. But these same people cannot conceive of how anyone can discern Mitt Romney's flaws, which I've chronicled in the course of the campaign, and still not vote for Obama.

Don't they see that Obama's transgressions are worse than any I've mentioned?

I don't see how anyone who confronts Obama's record with clear eyes can enthusiastically support him. I do understand how they might concluded that he is the lesser of two evils, and back him reluctantly, but I'd have thought more people on the left would regard a sustained assault on civil liberties and the ongoing, needless killing of innocent kids as deal-breakers.

He's a Libertarian.
