Years and decades later, his songs ande characters remain fresh in my imagination.
I can't think of a single performer I miss more than Zevon.

No. I don't want him on US soil. And there isn't really a way to get it over with quickly, since he's going to drag things out as long as possible no matter what. He's not going to plead guilty and the sensitive nature of some of the evidence against him guarantees a great deal of legal maneuvering yet to be done.

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation to put an end to so-called ex-gay therapy against LGBT youth, making his the first state to protect young people from such practices.
The law goes into effect January 1, 2013, and prohibits state-licensed therapists from engaging in "reparative therapy" with minors. Advocates for the bill say that conversion therapy uses dangerous tactics that place youth at a high risk of depression and suicide.

As I linked on Saturday, there was a "Politifest" in town and I didn't even know it was happening, and by looking at the pictures of the event it seems very few people showed up, even though there were some major candidates.
So, I'm wondering what is happening here.

Republican strength in Congress increases the share of income held by the top 1 percent, but the president's political affiliation has no effect, suggests a new study in the October issue of the American Sociological Review that looks at the rise of the super-rich in the United States.
"This points to the central role that Congress has in the legislative process," said study co-author Thomas W. Volscho, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at CUNY-College of Staten Island. "The president has limited ability to make the sort of legislative changes necessary to affect the top 1 percent without the support of Congress, making Congress the central actor here."

I know this much. I've never seen my mom who is usually fairly apolitical so disgusted with a candidate. She was furious with his total nonchalant reaction to Limbaugh acting like a pig and the 47% bullshit pissed her off personally and I don't blame her knowing how hard she's worked to get to where she is now. And she's why I take it very personally when Mitt and other right wingers attack people who make their careers in the government because I know how hard my mom has worked.

I think one of the big turning points in the campaign was SCOTUS upholding ACA's constitutionality. Man oh man the right and Romney seemed so confident that there was no way that Roberts would let it be affirmed. Hell, I still remember Mitt bragging the night before SCOTUS announced the decision here in Virginia that he knew that White House wasn't sleeping well. I really don't think they had a Plan B for SCOTUS upholding ACA. I still think despite the fact that ACA isn't exactly popular that having its legality upheld has helped its political legitimacy a ton and thus Obama's too. We heard how that legislation was unconstitutional, unAmerican, and even from people like Sarah Palin that it would lead to death panels. I think many people are seeing that the Tea Party bullshit about health care was just that and then they see Mitt Romney. A man who championed similar legislation as governor pandering to that and I don't think they like that.

A Pakistani juvenile court is expected to hear Monday the case of a Christian teenage girl accused of violating blasphemy laws by allegedly burning pages containing texts from the Quran.
An Islamabad court ordered the case transferred to juvenile court last week after a police investigation concluded that an imam framed the girl, Rimsha.
The imam, Khalid Jadoon Chishti, is scheduled to appear at a separate court hearing Monday after he was arrested last month on accusations of evidence tampering. Police have said he could face blasphemy charges, a dramatic twist in the saga.
The 14-year-old Rimsha had been held in an adult jail before she was released on bail in September. The transfer of her case to juvenile court is a good sign, a rights group says.

I've only seen that one once but that's a really bad one. I've mostly seen the American crossroads one with the small business owners and I particularly cringe when the one guy says "he treats us like we're his enemy." I just sigh knowing that it's on behalf of a guy like Mitt who cares more about corporations than small businesses succeeding in the economy. I really haven't been impressed really with any of his ads. As I said, his rare positive one I've seen seems forced and insincere. I think the best Obama one I've seen has been on education because it shows how little Mitt understands how important things like small class sizes are to parents.

That was from 1964, a year in American Pop that in retrospect looks kind of strange. The Beatles made their big splash that year and the ripples sort of disturbed the pond, so to speak.
In "easy listening" pop there were some really big hits that year (Armstrong, Streisand, Martin), but as far as "rock and roll" only a few artists/groups had hits that 48 years later are worth another hearing, and it's a short list:
So many of the "rock and roll" hits of that year really haven't aged well and sound quite dated, "period" pieces.

I want to post something here that doesn't pass the smell test. Not sure there's enough relevant information for a page (since I've never posted a page it makes me even more uncertain, and since the woman in question is not a public figure, I'm even less likely to want to go out on that limb).
I saw an ad last night for Mitt Romney called "Why I Changed My Vote," featuring testimonials from a number of women who were changing their vote from President Obama to Mitt Romney.
While most of the testimonials seemed authentic, one woman's words did not -- she just seemed a bit too polished. Her name was "Jodi C.," and she claimed to be a lifelong Democrat who voted for President Obama, but was now switching to Mitt Romney.
A link to a site called winfield411.com provided me a little more information, that "Jodi C.'s" name is Jodi Carroll, and she's from Winfield, Illinois.
Jodi Carroll's Facebook page -- and you can see from her picture that she's the same woman featured in the ad -- has a number of likes:

The first thing I did when I moved was to contact the CC here. Mailing out my last bit of info today. I have to send my W-2 to them since I didn't file taxes last year. (I didn't make enough to bother) A Pell grant should cover my expenses as far as skool goes. I might have to get a Stafford loan. When I was in skool I was carrying 15 hours and working 45hrs/wk. I'm not doing that again.

If you're doing a professional masters to go for a non-academic job then obviously networking opportunities are critical.
I sometimes wish I could go back to college and actually focus on learning stuff rather than making friends and having fun. Youth wasted on the young etc. Having said that I don't really regret it - college was a lot of fun and I did actually learn some stuff that I still use from time to time.

Before costs drove us to KY and their community college system I put in for CCNY. Do they go as far as a master's program? They had a great history of graduating some gritty 'doers'.

CCNY is one part of CUNY. The social work program seems to be concentrated at Hunter College rather than at City, but I'm still in early days of figuring out this byzantine noodle. Hunter is also much closer to me, so that'd be nice.

There's actually one school in the CUNY system that tanks their ratings. It has something like a 25% 6 year graduation rate. I don't know what they're doing there, but they're doing it wrong.
The CUNY system excluding that school has a bad 4-year graduation rate, but a perfectly fine (comparable to normal state schools) 6-year graduation rate.
I think I'm going to CUNY it, unless some big pile of money pops up out of the blue.

No, it's just too policy-based for me. I'm really most interested in doing one-on-one therapy, and the New School focuses more on what it says on the tin: research and policy and broad-based stuff. If you've ever handled an actual or quality reproduction war axe-- like a Dane axe-- it feels totally different from a wood-chopping axe. My advice to any would-be axe-murderers out there is to invest in a quality reproduction, and not just use a wood-chopping axe. There's really no choice to be made between the two-- using the wood-chopping axe to try to cleave people is a great way to cut your own foot off. Use a Dane axe, and you'll be lopping off limbs with a smile.

My advice to any would-be axe-murderers out there is to invest in a quality reproduction, and not just use a wood-chopping axe. You could probably test meat from that gator and find out. If they were cage/pen raising it the odds are it was getting fed chicken. And the chicken would be corn fed. And that can be traced since corn proteins are different than whatever a wild gator would be eating.

I picked up my absentee ballot today at the Township Office, I'll be out of the country on election day. In Michigan there are about 15 proposals all written in mumbo jumbo legalspeak so its not clear what the hell you are voting for or against until you read it 3 or 4 times.
Hopefully voters who go to the polls will do their research beforehand so they know how they want to vote on all of the proposals. If not, the lines will be very long and extremely slow.

In Massachusetts he was in the minority party and had to compromise and make deals with the other side. In today's GOP, there is no room for that and he'd be demonized for compromising anything with the Dems, so I don't know if how he governed in MA means very much here.

TWA Flight 847 was hijacked en route from Athens to Rome and forced to land in Beirut, Lebanon, where the hijackers held the plane for 17 days. They demanded the release of the Kuwait 17 as well as the release of 700 fellow Shiite Muslim prisoners held in Israeli prisons and in prisons in southern Lebanon run by the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army. When these demands weren't met, hostage Robert Dean Stethem, a U.S. Navy diver, was shot and his body dumped on the airport tarmac. U.S. sources implicated Hezbollah.
In what was widely perceived as an implicit, never explicit, quid pro quo, the hostages started being released by the hijackers, followed some days after by Israel starting to free some of its hundreds of Shiite prisoners. At the time, U.S. officials denied there was a deal and said Israel had already committed to releasing the prisoners.
Imad Mughniyah, a senior officer with Hezbollah, was secretly indicted for the TWA hijacking in 1987, along with three others. One of those indicted, Mohammed Ali Hamadei, was arrested in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1989 he was convicted in a German court and sentenced to life in prison. [Editor's Note: Imad Mugniyah remained at large and on the FBI's Most Wanted List for 19 years, until he was killed in a car bombing in Damascus, Syria on Feb. 12, 2008.]

Tactically speaking most of those are pretty good advice with the exception of #6 about letting the Bush tax cuts expire. Last I checked the public was in favor of letting them expire for top earners. Also #10 is a very bad idea. Drawing attention to rabid and unreasonable obstructionism on the part of Republicans is stupid and Obama will know that one out of the park.

Yeah, that's a good example of why people who blindly swallow what the factcheckers have to offer are stupid.
First of all, what Obama actually said is that Romney was going to follow the same trickle-down economics which led to the meltdown in the first place. It wasn't that the Bush Tax cuts on their own was the problem, it was the whole trickle-down philosophy. And this is true: from privledging investment income, to deregulation of the financial industry, a trickle-down approach, thinking that wealth creation at the highest level is the best way to keep the economy strong, is indeed what led to the meltdown.
It's really interesting how people, even self-professed cynics, fall for a rebranded media source calling itself a 'factchecker'.

I can't believe this conspiracy story is actually being spread seriously. His parole said he had to stay off the internet. He kind of obviously didn't. The answer to the second one is "kept things from completely falling apart," just like the Iraq surge. (The real answer is there's no way of knowing unless we go back to 2009 and try it the other way. How do you expect anyone to do that?)

Personally I'm not that concerned about the Libya thing. Of course in hind sight security should have been better but these things happen. Republicans can possibly make some political points with it if they're careful.
The problem with the questions about the Afghan surge (and pretty much everything else on the list) is that Mitt has no serious plans of his own, At least nothing with any substance. After reading Mitt's WSJ article this morning he's just back seat driving, complaining, using catch phrases without contributing anything serious of his own. Many of Frum's questions are decent ideas from a political standpoint but I don;t think Mitt is in a very good position to take advantage of them.

The purpose of the surge was to enable a US pull out by building up the Afghan forces so they can take over and as protection for a “population-centric counterinsurgency” - a rebuilding and expansion of Afghan physical infrastructure. In 2009 there were 93,000 soldiers and 77,000 police. Now there are 200,000 soldiers and 149,000 police.
The number of American military killed is not a measure of the country's stability. Nor is it a measure of success in rebuilding infrastructure. It only takes a few Taliban/al-Qaeda operatives to kill many NATO soldiers, making it look like the training has been a failure, but unless a significant portion of the Afghan police/military are operatives, then that intended goal of the Afghan surge has been successful.
Frum's question is irrelevant because it moves the goal posts.

The semiofficial Fars news agency said judicial agents detained Javanfekr late Wednesday. IRNA said Javanfekr was arrested as Ahmadinejad, who had shielded his press adviser in the past from arrest, began his speech at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
That's just another round in the longstanding power play between Ahmadinejad and the Guardian Council and Supreme Leader, and the cameraman may have wanted no part of what was waiting for him upon his return to Iran after the General Assembly visit.

Bachmann: It almost sounds like he’s trying to speak as “‘Emperor of the World,’ telling the world what to do, as opposed to being the President of the United States who should be adamant and say it’s outrageous that these Islamist countries should be calling on the United States to take away the constitutional protections of the American people. This is very important to think that the United States would restrict speech of Americans. Now the president did talk in his remarks about the fact that we do have a constitutional right to free speech but really the only focus of that speech should have been under no circumstances will the United States ever subvert the Constitution to Sharia law. We didn’t get that kind of a forceful statement from our President.
Mefferd: No and that goes back to the day right after the consulate attack I think Mitt Romney did so much better than the President himself and saying we’re Americans, we believe in free speech, this was unacceptable. From Obama, it was sort of a ‘Chris Stevens was a really great guy’ and that was about it.

Because they intend to establish a Caliphate, an Islamic government, across the entire world so that it isn’t just our speech rights that we would give up, we would have to give up all rights eventually and we would have to conform to Sharia law, the Islamic law. As women know, this would be a disaster for women, for freedom, for free speech. We’re not an Islamic nation, people can believe whatever they want to believe here, but we’re not an Islamic nation, we believe in freedom and I only wish our President would articulate American values. That’s one thing we’re getting from Mitt Romney, we are not getting it from Barack Obama. I’ll say it again, I believe he is the most dangerous president we have ever had on foreign policy and for that reason alone he must not have a second term.

(CBS News) About 50 arrests have been made in connection with the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi in which the American Ambassador and three other consulate employees were killed, and some of the suspects involved are from outside the country, Libya's president told CBS News.
In an interview for "Face the Nation" Sunday, President Mohamed Magariaf also said that evidence "leaves us with no doubt" that the attack was pre-planned.
"It was planned, definitely, it was planned by foreigners, by people who entered the country a few months ago, and they were planning this criminal act since their arrival," he told Bob Schieffer.
On the same program, however, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said the U.S. has no evidence proving that the attacks in Benghazi were premeditated.

It's hard to tell. I think he'd be fine with a Dem controlled congress, more open to comprimise once in office. But with Republicans in control of both houses there's no telling what kind of nonsense he'd sign into law. I'm much more worried about congressional Republicans that I am concerned with Mitt.
I could have written that exact same post. I think he'd be a fine decent President with a Democratic House and Senate. But with the Tea Party running the House, I don't think Mitt would be strong enough to counter their extremism.
