It might not be BS, but it's worth the 48-Hour Rule because PRNewswire's not exactly the best source for unbiased anything.
However, if Elway was indeed aware of any of this going on and did little to nothing about it and it's proven in court, it'll be a stain on his legacy and reputation that he'll never (and shouldn't) live down.

Christian TV networks prepare for live coverage of Jesus Christ’s return
Should the body of the Christian deity figure’s son somehow drop down from outer space and suddenly appear hovering in the sky over Jerusalem, America’s two leading Christian television networks are prepared to cover the holy event live. You’ll even be able to watch it on your iPad.
According to The Los Angeles Times, both Daystar TV and the Trinity Broadcasting Network have set up cameras in studios overlooking the Mount of Olives, where scripture says the Christian Messiah will touch down one day. Both networks recently acquired studio space in Jerusalem as part of a miniature dust-up in their niche industry over who is doing more to preach the gospel to Jews.
Daystar in particular has been very aggressive in deploying their messaging on Israeli airwaves, having launched the first 24-hour Christian network in the country back in 2006. The network’s website also features a live video stream from the Mount of Olives that’s compatible with a host of mobile devices like iPhones, iPads, Androids and Blackberries — just in case viewers need to catch the Messiah’s return on the go.

It's what happens when you see that the next civilization over doesn't have many units and think "I can take him!" Oh sure, I took his capital, but I expended most of my manpower on that. When I turned to his remaining city, he'd already whittled me down.
Then I made my second rookie mistake: I got cocky and thought that I could just pump out enough units fast enough to make up the difference, instead of calling the war off long enough to capitalize on my gains.

Once again, the Cowboys (2-2) are a .500 team. They are also one of the lowest-scoring team in the NFL with only 65 points.
Since the start of the 1997 season, Dallas is 122-122 in regular-season games. They have won only one playoff game in that span after three Super Bowl titles in a four-year span in the first half of the 1990s.
91 | Dark_Falcon Mon, Oct 1, 2012 9:14:57pm |
And that final Dallas TD pass, that gave them some vestige of dignity? It did so for the Cowboys but not for Tony Romo; Romo was on the bench at the time and the pass was thrown by former Bear Kyle Orton.

There has always been one team I have always hated since I can remember as a kid. The Cowboys. Every time they lose I have joy in my heart and weet dreams.
I also hate the Lakers. Every year when they would win the world championship I'd post congrads to Charles team.
It was like vinegar going on my lips...And look at the Lakers this year! They have Nash and Superman and Kobe. Fuck! Whoops..I mean crap..

For me it was the Yankees and the Cowboys. I think it was because my Dad hated both teams so much and you know fathers and sons, it all rubs off. The Cowboys slide into mediocrity the past fifteen years makes me more indifferent though. The Yankees though? I think I got as much joy from the 2004 ALCS as the Red Sox fans did.

And Cabrera had 4 hits and another homer, he is just about a lock for the triple crown. This should seal the deal for the MVP award for him.
And to the people who think the rookie from Anaheim deserves it more.. please. gimme a break.

So, got an entire Great Company of Space Wolves table ready. 132 Marines, plus another dozen or so additional officers and support, a Dreadnought, 6 transports, 2 drop pods, 2 squads of wolf cavalry, and 2 Land Raiders. A big enough force I could enter an Armageddon scale battle without pulling in additional support options. Now I get to go thru on the detailing and basing, but that is just for fun.
Just in time so I can get started on revamping my Night Lords for the new Codex.

Time to go get another cup of coffee. Just tossed a grenade email into my bosses in-box (and a few other managers as well) indicating that there are a dozen or so security requests hung up in processing because someone is not making the final approval to allow work to be done on them.
(I am essentially sick right now of being badgered about requests that I have already done my analysis and approval of; e.g. my part of the processing loop is complete. But I'm the visible part of the process and thus get nudged constantly about it. The most frustrating part of this really is that I have the security authority and access to do 80% of this work, but am restricted from doing so by the process rules. So I am watching efficiency and service being killed by bureaucracy.)

The reason for the bias in favor of white collar criminals over those guilty of 'street crimes' is twofold:
1: White collar crimes are almost always non-violent and as such don't generate as much of a desire to cast the individual out from society. Street crimes, especially if violent, trigger feelings that the person in question is low and mean and ought not to have a say.
1.5: A part of #1 is that white collar criminals tend to be from higher social circles and have a better education. Thus they come across as still having value to society, whereas those guilty of a gang assault or drug dealing are from low social status and tend to be poorly educated. As a result, they do not have the additional abilities that might provide a white-collar ex-criminal with value he can bring to a job.
2. People of higher social standing and education tend to be more articulate in speech and writing, giving them an edge before any review board. They are also more likely to understand how to handle a bureaucratic process, and to still have friends whose opinion on the felon's behalf the reviewers will put value in.

What's happening to these requests? Is someone slacking off, or is the approval committee composed of cats (cats tend to spend most of their time sleeping on requests, sometimes literally)?
I'm not sure. What happens at that stage is not uniform. Some are approved (I think) by one of two people. Others require approval by managers (finance, accounting, etc.) there as well depending on what is being asked for. I suspect one issue is people being on vacation and thus items back up and are not processed.
There is an odd ebb and flow where things back up for a few days and then get approved all at once. Or a ticket goes through in a few hours while a very similar one sits for a week and a half.
Whenever I bitch loudly enough about it and toss something up the chain things tend to improve for few weeks.
I don't like doing this since I do not know what the available resources and current workloads are on that side of the wall. I have enough empathy about being annoyed by this sort of constant demands being made when I am buried in work to not want to inflict it on others. And I have a fairly good relationship with my opposite numbers in Brazil who are probably going to catch the brunt of this, so I feel a little bad about triggereing it. (Though not too bad since they have not been responding to emails in the last two weeks.)
Oh joy. One of the project managers has appeared. That will get me directly questioned shortly about a few of these tickets. And then she will go directly to her boss (a VP) and complain. I should get an email from him asking what is going on by lunch time. Plus an email from my boss since the VP will talk to him as well. :(

Oh, you can make 'em up, depending on how quickly you want to get to the ER with alcohol poisoning.
Drink if you hear the following:

Osama bin Laden
Anything related to birtherism (birth certificates, true American, etc.)
recession

Bain
immigration
Libya

"strong support for [supporter of] Israel"
Ronald Reagan
unemployment
Or, you can go here.

Jack Wu isn't shy about his beliefs.
Topeka is evil. Harry Potter promotes witchcraft. Christmas trees are pagan idols. Cancer is a judgment from God. And the teaching of evolution should be rooted out of Kansas schools because it's a satanic lie.
He also believes that America's public schools are cultivating a culture of "liars, thieves, murderers and perverts."
Outside the mainstream? It doesn't matter to Wu, running for a seat on the Kansas Board of Education.
A northern California transplant, Wu is seeking to defeat first-term Democrat Carolyn Campbell of Topeka in an admittedly uphill battle for the 4th District seat on the state school board. Uphill because he only received $5 in contributions through July, the most recent reporting period.
But Campbell is taking her Republican opponent seriously.
"I want to make sure the folks that don't know Carolyn Campbell and her record will try to get to know me and understand who my opponent is and what he stands for," Campbell said.
The 4th District covers six northeast Kansas counties and takes in parts of Topeka and Lawrence. Campbell's district became a little more Republican this year when she picked up parts of Jefferson and Pottawatomie counties when election boundaries were redrawn to adjust for the census.

Breaking: Pa. Court rules voters can cast ballots without ID
The judge issued a very narrow ruling, only effecting this election:
As written, the law said voters who do not bring proper photo ID on Election Day can cast a provisional ballot. They would then have six days to bring in the required photo ID for their votes to count.
But as he had indicated last week during hearings in the case, Simpson decided that the law does not disenfranchise voters simply because it requires poll workers to ask for photo ID. Rather, the risk comes when a voter casts a provisional ballot but then cannot obtain the necessary identification in time.
As a result, Simpson decided that for the November 6 election only, voters without appropriate photo ID could vote, but would no longer have to produce identification within six days, as their votes would be counted.

Sort of a silly middle ground to end up in. For this election you can ask for picture ID (ID that fits the requirements of the new law) and then if they don't have it you can make them enter a provisional ballot that will be counted anyways.

re: #171 Feline Emperor of the Conservative Waste
This tells me there needs to be a (good) process analysis. It may be that the various constraints mean it can't be improved, but the irregularity tells me that there probably opportunities.

It's what the precedents in the law seem to require at this late date. There's not enough time to address the issues behind provisional ballots and challenges to them, but neither should the law be thrown out wholesale. Hence the injunction.
If you like, you may compare Judge Simpson's ruling to the actions of Chief Justice Roberts regarding President Obama's health care legislation: Both judges seeking to deal with problems relating to the law while still respecting the role and wishes of the legislature that passed said law.
If however, you do not like Judge Simpson's ruling, then you may simply reply to it with: "D'oh!" (The opportunity to do a Simpsons gag proved an impossible to resist temptation.)

Notice that provisional ballots are not counted the same day. Instead they are (per process) vetted against checklists such as "has this person voted elsewhere?" Only the "have they shown an ID since turning in this provisional ballot" checklist has been removed.
This also means that there are six days in which the various ballots can be challenged before being counted even if they do pass the checklists.
That said, the ID requirement did indeed make it likely otherwise legitimate votes would not be counted. As an example: employers are required to give employees time to vote but are not required to provide time to validate their provisional ballots.

It's strictly a temporary measure. I get the feeling this judge would rather describe the problem and then have the fix implemented by the legislature. Though he'll take action if he needs to, Judge Simpson sounded like he he'd rather have the law amended.

Yesterday's bogus rumor about Wall Mart's private paramilitary police force with their own LRAD is bogus.
Riot Police Arrest Peaceful Protesters at Rally for Striking Walmart Workers
In response to Monday's peaceful protester, riot police from Will County and Elwood were unleashed on the crowd, and witnesses tweeted a series of disturbing photos, including officers in full riot regalia (face shields, clubs, body armor,) and what appears to be a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) vehicle.
There was some confusion about the police's jurisdiction on Twitter with individuals speculating the officers were private police given their "paramilitary" appearance.

First, you really have to want to quit. I quit over 6 years ago, had tried to quit several times before. I spent Friday night drinking and smoking my ass off. At midnight I threw the rest of the pack in the driveway, in the pouring rain. I wore a nicotine patch on day one, half a patch on day two, and a quarter of a patch for two more days. Brushed my teeth frequently, drank a lot of water and avoided places where people smoked. Clean all the ashtrays, air out your home and car. I also chewed a lot of sugarless gum.
Good luck, if at first you don't succeed, try again.

My personal opinion on the matter (and I am a PA resident and thus am directly affected) is that it was an unnecessary hurdle on voting erected by the legislature. In principle it makes sense to enact, but there are other issues the legislature should be concentrating on since the instances of voter fraud that this law would prevent are rare.
And I expect the main way the law will effect me is longer and slower lines at the polls. I have the proper ID, but the ward I vote in has a lot of elderly and non-drivers who I expect may not be as prepared.

Yes, that protest was peaceful. But Illinois has at times seen union protests that have been violent (the horrific events at Haymarket Square in Chicago in 1886 being the best known) and prudence demands the officers responding to such protests be prepared.
The Nation does itself a great disservice by saying that riot police were "unleashed" on the protestors. The photos being shown show the police behaving calmly and professionally. They had clubs, tasers, and pepper spray; but they did not use them. Instead they removed the demonstrators who were illegally blocking the entrance to the distribution facility with minimum force. The Nation makes its as foolish as a wingnut blog when it suggests that the police misbehaved.

Put the smoking money in a piggy bank, figure out what you were spending and then put that amount away and don't touch it if possible. Take that money and use it for a big old reward after 3 months. I was smoking a carton a week,so every Friday that amount went into the piggy bank. I used it to buy myself an awesome pair of hiking boots from The North Face and some other things for the house. The UN General Assembly couldn't even summon the courage to write a half-assed resolution condemning the violence.
And there are questions about a video that surfaced claiming to show American journalist Austin Tice being held by rebel forces. The video's authenticity is being questioned as a propaganda piece produced by Assad's regime to discredit the rebels.

re: #235 William Barnett-Lewis
As it has been for a year now.
Once again KT, why are you so terrified by people exercising their rights?
Speaking only for myself, I'm not scared of strikers exercising their rights. Private sector unions have a right to exist, and have a lawful right to try to organize non-union places of employment. What they don't have right to do is to blockade a distribution center, and when some protestors did that they were arrested.
But what bothers me, and what may have bothered Killgore was firstly the "private police force!!1" meme, which is the kind of internet conspiracy theory that needs to be aggressively refuted to prevent its taking root. Secondly, i objected to what I felt was a media commentary organ's hyperbolic description of the police reaction to the protest, which i felt was appropriate and restrained. I tend to oppose such hyperbolic coverage by any media organ as I feel it inflames emotions and makes violence and conflict more likely.

It seems highly unlikely to say the least. CNN and Al Jazeera have both had no troubles when embedding their reporters with the FSA.

It's a really sad situation. I thought there might be hope a few days ago when the Egyptians were proposing some sort of military intervention possibly with the assistance of Turkey. But the headlines this morning is the Egyptian military is outgunned in Sinai and may need help from the Brits. Looks like little chance of them accomplishing anything with Syria. This could go on for years.

Iron Crown distributes to Games-Plus (the game store where I mostly play), so I'll likely see this game. I'll check the link though, because GP may want to do a demo/playtest for it. Lots of gamers play at Games-Plus, and so it sometimes hosts such things.

'Combat' is used as an initial term. If this was an ambush or sniper killing the word choice will be revised appropriately. I was also keying off of Brian Terry's death, as he died in a firefight that could properly be described as combat.

I don't know, I don't think folks could get comfortable with a black Bond. The character was written as white, has been played by white guys for decades, putting a black actor in for whatever reason would just make him stand out like a sore thumb.

Sean Connery owned the character and while I found Moore's Bond to be more cartoonish (and the movies became more gadget-centric), Brosnan's Bond was close to what I had imagined Bond to be.
Then along came Craig, whose Bond is brutish and direct. Much more physical than the prior incarnations, and much more believable when it comes to the nature of the character. He's definitely remade the character in his image.

I absolutely love Daniel Craig's take on Bond. He made my inner Bond fangirl fall in love with the character all over again.
When I was a kid, we'd go to the Houston Public Library's annual book sale. They'd get rid of all the books that were old or taking up shelf space so they could bring in new ones. I don't know if they do those sales anymore but back then, for a reader like me, it was Candyland. I'd use money I'd saved to buy tons of stuff for next to nothing. One time, I got all the James Bond books that Ian Fleming had written to that point, and I fell in love with the character. Out of all the actors in the role, Daniel Craig is the only one who's gotten the closest to my mental image of who James Bond is supposed to be.

I don't get him, he's still going to vote for the 'Job Creator'.
From the article:
Rauch notes also that the concentration of wealth in the hands of rich investors will tend to inflate demand for investment assets, causing asset bubbles.
[F]or decades, more than half of the increase in the country’s GDP poured into the bank accounts of the richest Americans, who needed liquid investments in which to put their additional wealth. Their appetite for new investment vehicles fueled a surge in what Arkansas State’s Brown calls “financial engineering”—the concoction of exotic financial instruments, which acted on the financial sector like steroids.
Those changes, the French economists Jean-Paul Fitoussi and Francesco Saraceno wrote in a 2010 paper, “help explain why the expansion of the financial sector was so out of touch with the economy. And why, for example, in the U.S., the financial sector represented about 40 percent of the total profit of the economy.” Alas, when the recession struck, the financial sector’s gigantism and complexity helped turn what might have been a brush fire into a meltdown.

Meet the Ohio Voters Who Are Killing Romney's Campaign...
From the article:
A Republican until he switched sides in 2008, Workman plans to vote for Obama a second time. Whatever's happening to the coal industry, he doesn't think it's the president's fault. "I was born and raised here. I worked coal off and on all my life," he said. "It's a cycle. Every seven years or so, it goes up and down."
Experts say the coal industry's recent fortunes have more to do with a transition to cleaner fuels that partly preceded Obama and with the current low price of natural gas. And some of the miners seem to believe that, like Dan Gingerich, a 31-year-old who works underground and told me he blamed oil and gas more than Obama. "I'd like to be a Republican, but I don't know if Romney really knows what to do," he said. "I wish the Republicans would have somebody else."

My mom just dug up a couple of E-series bonds my great-uncle Gus had bought for me three days after I was born. $75 in bonds, now worth $500+. Kind of neat. I'm tempted just to hang onto them for sentimental value; Gus (or 'bruth', short for 'brother', as I knew him) was a very sentimental man, and it seems like a good way of remembering him.
I'm a little more sentimental than usual today because one of the three things my cat broke yesterday was my cherished mug that used to belong to my grandfather.

Man, that's too bad. Sam Mendes is awesome. He directed Revolutionary Road, which is one of my favorite dramas of the past 10 years, and I know he's directing the new Bond film too. So, I'd love to see how he would do with Shakespeare.

About that GMO corn gives you cancer study....
Press digs into anti-GMO study
Reporters thwart scientists’ attempt to prevent scrutiny
In late September, French scientists published research in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology that described the supposedly deleterious effects of the herbicide Roundup, and corn that has been engineered to be Roundup-tolerant. Access to the embargoed paper prior to publication—a norm in science journalism—came with an unusual condition, however: Journalists had to sign a confidentiality agreement that prevented them from sharing the paper with experts for evaluation, which is the basic reason for having an embargo system in the first place.
Embargo Watch’s Ivan Oransky exposed the shenanigans based on a series of early reports from European news agencies like AFP, Reuters, and the BBC, which mentioned the agreement. But the first two of those outlets, which apparently accepted the French scientists’ terms (the BBC said thanks, but no thanks) caught hell from science journalist Carl Zimmer. On his blog at Discover, The Loom, he wrote:
This is a rancid, corrupt way to report about science. It speaks badly for the scientists involved, but we journalists have to grant that it speaks badly to our profession, too. If someone dangles a press conference in your face but won’t let you do your job properly by talking to other scientists, WALK AWAY. If someone hands you confidentiality agreements to sign, so that you will have no choice but to produce a one-sided article, WALK AWAY. Otherwise, you are being played.

You know what sucks.
A few years after my grandparents died, my cousin and her family lived in my grandparents house.
One year, the house flooded, they abandoned the house, and eventually, it had to be condemned.
Instead of taking out what could be saved, they just left everything and didn't tell anyone.
It was only later that I realized that the original Return of the Jedi glasses from BK that my grandfather meticulously collected for me, were left too.
Still kicking myself...

Charisma Says Satan is Behind Law Limiting Ex-Gay Therapy, May Lead to Bible Ban
California’s new law preventing pseudo-scientific sexual orientation conversion therapy from being used on minors has not gone over well with anti-gay activists. Charisma magazine news editor Jennifer LeClaire even believes that California may soon decide to “outlaw the Bible” as a next step. LeClaire claimed that homosexuality is caused by demonic “spirit of immorality” that “enters in through some sort of abuse and the lies of the enemy,” Satan. “Sexual orientation change efforts can help set the captives free,” LeClaire said. “That’s why the enemy saw to it that California, a state with a high gay population rate, bans such therapy.”
When he signed the bill on Saturday, the liberal governor said change therapy would “now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery.”
Really? Since when is helping a confused teenager under assault by powers of this dark world a dustbin of quackery?

How Romney Is Blowing It, According To Every Conservative Pundit
Monday morning quarterbacking is the lifeblood of the political industry. And now that Mitt Romney is struggling to break through in the polls, conservative pundits’ second guessing is louder than ever.
The problem for Romney is figuring out which of his backseat drivers know where they’re going and which are just shouting “turn right!” at every intersection.
We’ve compiled the bulk of commentators’ endless stream of pro-tips into one easy to read dossier. Now all Team Romney has to do is read over the array of sometimes bland, sometimes counterintuitive, and even more often contradictory right wing-approved options and decide how to implement it in the time he has left.
The obvious solution is to implement every idea all at once, so that the finger of God will be even more visible on the day Romney wins.

Yeah, I see at the top of the list the big one that Dark's been saying should be Willard's debate strategy, namely laying out what he plans to do. And it says exactly what I've been countering with: The more people hear about Romney's plans, the less they like them. Going on stage tomorrow night and laying out how he intends to cut taxes for the 1% while raising them for the rest of us would be suicide.

There were many tales in my youth here in NW Pennsylvania about mob hits in Youngstown and other places coming here to dispose of the bodies at pig farms. They say a dozen pigs can pretty well clean up the meat from a body in a couple hours.
I know my uncles pigs liked leather when one yanked me off the stump I was resting on while weed-wacking the grass from underneath the electric pen fence. Just came up behind me snorting around, snorted up to my belt, grabbed a bite of it and yanked me off my perch. Damn pig. A good punch to the head backed him off.
