George Will Reduced to Arguing That Obama’s Ahead Because He’s Black

This is why he gets the big bucks
Politics • Views: 33,760

Today in the weird world of right wing punditry, George Will uncorks a real howler of an argument to explain why Barack Obama is running ahead of Mitt Romney in almost all the polls: it’s because Obama’s black.

A significant date in the nation’s civil rights progress involved an African American baseball player named Robinson, but not Jackie. The date was Oct. 3, 1974, when Frank Robinson, one the greatest players in history, was hired by the Cleveland Indians as the major leagues’ first black manager. But an even more important milestone of progress occurred June 19, 1977, when the Indians fired him. That was colorblind equality.

Managers get fired all the time. The fact that the Indians felt free to fire Robinson — who went on to have a distinguished career managing four other teams — showed that another racial barrier had fallen: Henceforth, African Americans, too, could enjoy the God-given right to be scapegoats for impatient team owners or incompetent team executives.

Perhaps a pleasant paradox defines this political season: That Obama is African American may be important, but in a way quite unlike that darkly suggested by, for example, MSNBC’s excitable boys and girls who, with their (at most) one-track minds and exquisitely sensitive olfactory receptors, sniff racism in any criticism of their pin-up. Instead, the nation, which is generally reluctant to declare a president a failure — thereby admitting that it made a mistake in choosing him — seems especially reluctant to give up on the first African American president. If so, the 2012 election speaks well of the nation’s heart, if not its head.

I honestly don’t understand how people like Will can make such fatuous — and frankly, bigoted — arguments without cracking up at their own stupidity.

We all know how advantageous being born black/biracial with an African-Muslim sounding name is in American politics.

By "the nation", Will must mean the great unwashed, because the GOP has never really had a problem with calling every Democrat ever elected a failure.

Because I've heard practically every wingnut make that assertion in the wake of Obama's poll numbers. When they're not suggesting that pollsters are relying on '08 numbers when conservatives "know" that the shininess of the First Black President has rubbed off, they're whining that people aren't telling the truth to poll questioners because "Nobody wants to admit to voting against the black guy."

I didn't vote for Obama again because he is Black, I voted for him because I trust him to help the middle class a hell of allot more than Romney will. I think that's the reason he's ahead in the polls not because he's black.

Well I do think it's fair to say that Obama energizes black voters more than a white candidate would.

But I would also say Mitt Romney has given blacks really no good reasons to vote for him so what did you think would happen?

Advisers Say Romney Will Show Empathy In Debate

The Romney campaign believes their candidate needs to show empathy with Americans' economic troubles in the first presidential debate Wednesday, advisers to Mitt Romney told National Review. In debate prep, Romney has practiced coming across as personable and may share stories from the trail about people who have been hit hard during the recession.

my favorite george will column is the one where he transports himself back in time to 1957 to disparage those young folks and their disgusting habit of wearing dungarees

Denim is the infantile uniform of a nation in which entertainment frequently features childlike adults ("Seinfeld," "Two and a Half Men") and cartoons for adults ("King of the Hill"). Seventy-five percent of American "gamers" -- people who play video games -- are older than 18 and nevertheless are allowed to vote. In their undifferentiated dress, children and their childish parents become undifferentiated audiences for juvenilized movies (the six -- so far -- "Batman" adventures and "Indiana Jones and the Credit-Default Swaps," coming soon to a cineplex near you). Denim is the clerical vestment for the priesthood of all believers in democracy's catechism of leveling -- thou shalt not dress better than society's most slovenly. To do so would be to commit the sin of lookism -- of believing that appearance matters. That heresy leads to denying the universal appropriateness of everything, and then to the elitist assertion that there is good and bad taste.

And it will be the straight backed Mitt Romney that will leave a lasting impression on the viewers who, with the exception of those poor bastards seated in the hall who don't have cocktails in hand, will spit their drinks as they say, "Who is this fucking robot?"

71 jaunte  Tue, Oct 2, 2012 12:09:07pm

George Will is a dishonest clown.

Will's approach has been questioned in a few exceptional cases. During the 1980 campaign, he drew fire when it was learned he'd secretly coached Republican candidate Ronald Reagan for a debate with President Jimmy Carter using a debate briefing book stolen from the Carter campaign. Immediately following the debate, Will appeared on Nightline (10/28/80) to praise Reagan's "thoroughbred performance," never disclosing his role in rehearsing that performance (New York Times, 7/9/83).
........
Will suffered another ethical lapse in the 2000 campaign when he met with George W. Bush just before the Republican candidate was to appear on ABC's This Week. Later, in a column (Washington Post, 3/4/01), Will admitted that he'd met with Bush to preview questions, not wanting to "ambush him with unfamiliar material." In the meeting, Will provided Bush with a 3-by-5 card containing a crucial question he would later ask the candidate on the air. Though strongly resembling his coaching of candidate Reagan in 1980, and in strong contrast to his treatment of Jesse Jackson in 1988, this extraordinary admission received little media mention.

Last time there was a lot of talk, and worry, about the Bradley Effect. Obama won anyway. Now he's leading. If he wins again, the wail will go up in certain quarters that half-and-a-bit of the country just couldn't bear to fire the black guy.

Nu, what to do? I'm not going to vote for Romney to doubleplusundisprove that I'm not a soft bigot, or whatever the charge is meant to me.

Gays Have Taken Over the FBI!

Brian Camenker’s organization MassResistance is out with a new “report” arguing that the “homosexual and transgender movements” are using the FBI and CIA to “crack down on pro-family groups and citizens.” He appeared on Crosstalk with host Jim Schneider of VCY America yesterday to warn that efforts by the government agencies to create a more open workplace for their gay and lesbian employees and to engage with the gay community to prevent and prosecute anti-gay hate crimes is part of a pernicious plan that will “do a lot of damage” and harm the Religious Right. Camenker said he is “really scared” of the FBI now that it has become an “out homosexual organization” that is “embracing the gay agenda” by trying to stem the tide of anti-gay hate crimes.

We are approaching the big money SuperPAC folks and at the same time are appealing to regular folks like you for smaller contributions. In 2008, then-Senator Obama raised over $200 million of his $400-plus million raised from small contributions. Therefore, no contribution is too small, since there will be so many of you responding that the small contributions will add up and help us greatly.

Of course, if you can give a large contribution (there are no dollar limits on SuperPACs) that would be great, but, if not, anything you can afford will be appreciated and is extremely helpful in our efforts to get this ad as much airtime as possible in the key swing states.

Well I do think it's fair to say that Obama energizes black voters more than a white candidate would.

But I would also say Mitt Romney has given blacks really no good reasons to vote for him so what did you think would happen?

The black vote goes so overwhelmingly for the Democrats, and has for decades now, that Obama does only marginally better with black voters than Bill Clinton did. It's not even about Romney, per se. Republicans know this, and truly, they don't try that hard to tap the black vote. If Obama has an effect, it's just more of the black electorate turning out to vote.

The real fantasy of course is that 'white guilt' is garnering him votes. I don't know how many Americans there truly are who would have voted for John McCain, but instead decided to vote for Obama because he was black and they felt bad about that for some obscure reason, but the idea that they are legion appears to be a comfort to folks.

Congressman who said smoking lettuce was like cigarettes becomes lobbyist for R.J. Reynolds

Steve Buyer, a Republican congressman from Indiana from 1993 to 2011, had been the beneficiary of over $100,000 in Reynolds donations over the years and pushed the company’s legislative goals.

In 2009, he gave a famously colorful speech on the House floor endorsing smokeless tobacco: “You could have smoked that lettuce and you still end up with the same problems. You could cut the grass in your yard, dry it, and roll it up in a cigarette, and smoke it — and you’re still going to have a lot of problems,” he said. “It is the smoke that kills, not the nicotine.”

Omigod. I used to really admire George Will's writings as thoughtful and original. I didn't know that he may well have committed flagrant ethics violations, as you discuss in your comment.

A few years ago, my admiration for Mr. Will was reduced, when he stubbornly (very stubbornly) clung to the position that global warming isn't happening. But until now, I had no idea that he may be dishonest as well.

It's a shame, how people can (sometimes) change for the worse. I really used to like and respect his writings, even when I disagreed with him. His earlier writings, I think, were especially good at pointing out hypocrisy, both liberal and conservative.

They'll dissemble about any direct connections between the violent group and the rest of the movement, but generate a scenario or set of justifications in which the violent group's responsibility is mitigated and the blame is attributed to the victims and/or third parties.

Look at that case where the little girl got kidnapped by one parent of a same-sex couple, and was assisted in absconding the country by various anti-gay Christian groups. They're obviously in the legal wrong and have been investigated, but they're still lauded. For that matter, look at the handling of Scott Roeder by other anti-abortion groups. They might publicly condemn his shooting of Dr Tiler, but they also fund his legal defense and construct elaborate justifications of how it wasn't really murder.

The governing paradigm is pretty much "Look at what you made them do."

Popular websites or popular anything for that matter are like popular music. Some of it's good and some of it you wonder why the hell is it popular.

Most of that list is garbage. CSM is about the only exception for me, I'm kind of surprised they even made the list. Salon is ok. Politico, the Hill are passable. The rest, meh.

George Will: As We See From Baseball, Black Dudes Have It Made

Finally, in 1977, black people gained the ability to be scapegoats! This was a status long aspired to by African Americans, who had desired shitty treatment in jobs their bosses didn’t really think they were qualified for, but were never able to attain it. “Mabel,” a hypothetical black person would say to their hypothetical black friend Mabel, “I been prayin’ to the Lord day in and day out for so many days that he would PLEASE LORD give me the opportunity to manage a terrible Major League franchise and then get fired because I was the easiest person to blame. Oh, well. Back to this sharecroppin’! My back sure does hurt somethin’ fierce!”

Remember, kids: it’s not racist to scapegoat a black person for your own failures. It is, however, racist (but benignly so!) to keep a Democratic president in office when Republicans think he’s the Worst Black Muslim Socialist Ever.

172 Ghost of Tom Joad  Tue, Oct 2, 2012 1:06:34pm

It's just his way of explaining the world to folks based on his views. I have a few of these types in my family who espouse that the only reason Obama won in 2008 was because all the ni-CLANG! (I think that's the acronym for it around these parts) came out to vote for him. Of course, they never seem to have a reason why they would have voted R if the Dem. candidate was white.

Will (who is as loathsome as they come) seems to be invoking a form of 'affirmative action' as to why people won't vote against Obama, while at the same time being completely oblivious to the reasons people won't vote for Romney.

As with the folks I know, it's just a lack of critical thinking, a sprinkle of racism, and a heaping helping of denial baked in to create a burnt mess of a human cake.

'Queasy stomachs' as Biden plane aborts landing

Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) – Bad weather caused the plane carrying Vice President Joe Biden to abort its initial landing, creating a rough ride and passenger uncertainty over when the plane could land.

The plane - Air Force Two – attempted to land at the Charlotte Douglas airport for a campaign event. After an initial descent, the military version of a Boeing 757 harshly pulled back up, jolting those on board and raising concern aboard that something was wrong.

I've been on a plane that did that. Queasy is an understatement.

In classic DARVO fashion, they see ME as the family embarrassment, and a kind of anti-Christ for my support of science, reason, gay rights, and (worst of all) Obama. They do have some limits, though, since they have yet to accuse me of actually being gay. Perhaps this is because Jezebel at least definitely knows better. It's why I keep thinking it's the "Whitey Tape," because of the '08 myth that the McCain campaign had a hold of it, but refused to show it out. 'course, why the GOP would hold on to it all this time and release it on the eve of the debates, I have no clue.

The RWNJs are trying really hard to come up with an October Surprise that'll get some traction: first, the line that the White House is telling defense contractors not to send out layoff notices (that would be caused later in the year, barring any developments on the budget, by the budget sequestration agreed to by the Republicans last year as part of that total clusterfuck), now their pushing this sekrit tape business.

TPM on Drudge

For years, I was a big reader of Drudge. Was never a fan of Drudge, though I recognized his entrepreneurial acumen. In fact, I despised most everything that he stood for, from rancid politics to integrity free journalism, the endless lying. But I visited the site ALL THE TIME. And the reason was simple. Before social media and (for me) before the TPM “talk” email account gave me a steady traffic of pointers to important stories from everywhere it was just a great way to know what was happening — both in the most basic sense of what was happening and also what was being talked about.

And then maybe half a dozen years ago I just lost interest.

The utility disappeared. There were plenty of other channels I could use to stay up to date. And probably just as importantly there was a much fuller ecosystem of news sites and Drudge simply wasn’t the same kind of force anymore, though many in Washington, on all fours and leather-strapped desperately wanted him to rule their world.

For me personally I lot of that was the “talk” emails at TPM. I’d find things out faster than most people in the news business. Just one tragic example: I found out about the Gabby Giffords shooting before it hit any national news wire because a reader in Tucson flagged it to us. But even setting aside that vital stream of information that isn’t public, social media, Twitter and so forth fills the gap. Twitter also allows me to listen in on what lots of different political and ideological factions are saying and thinking.

I heard that Drudge was milking the race war this afternoon so I checked in. First time in forever. And I was just hit by the alternative reality. The skewed polls, the bottom giving out from the HMS Titanic Obama, the fight for human rights to oppressed conservatives.

Just weird.

President Obama has opened a sizable lead over Mitt Romney in polling ahead of the election as both Democrats and Republicans are increasingly convinced that he is going to win re-election, according to The Washington Times/Zogby Poll released Sunday.

In the latest poll, Mr. Obama drew 49.7 percent support while the Republican nominee garnered 41.1 percent. The previous Times/Zogby polls showed the race a dead heat — including just before the national party conventions, when they were tied with 45.7 percent of the vote each. Even with third-party candidates added to the mix, the results barely changed.

Judge slams Penn. lawmakers for ‘premeditated pandering’ to Christian voters

In his ruling on Monday, Conner held that members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly had “legislative immunity” and therefore could not be sued. He noted that courts had long established that lawmakers could not be sued for “acts that are ‘legislative’ in nature.”

Despite dismissing the lawsuit, Conner delivered a stinging rebuke of the resolution, which states that the nation needs “to study and apply the teachings of the holy scriptures.”

“But regardless of the motivation behind H.R. 535, its express language is proselytizing and exclusionary… The court is compelled to shine a clear, bright light on this resolution because it pushes the Establishment Clause envelope behind the safety glass of legislative immunity,” he wrote.

The resolution was unanimously approved by the General Assembly in January, a fact that Conner described as “alarming.”

E.W. Jackson: Democrats Have an 'Agenda Worthy of the Antichrist'

Bishop E.W. Jackson has embarked on a campaign following his failed Senate bid to convince black voters to reject the Democrats’ “anti-God” views and partake in a “mass exodus of Christians from the Democrat party.” Today in an opinion piece in the Washington Times, “Blacks are abandoning the Democratic Party,” Jackson asserted that African Americans will abandon the Democratic party over the issues of abortion rights and gay equality, incredulously asking how Democrats have “managed to hold on to black Christians in spite of an agenda worthy of the Antichrist?” “Mr. Obama’s commitment to the radical left’s anti-Christian, anti-God politics may cost him the election,” Jackson writes, “because a constituency he has taken for granted has awakened to the truth that being the first black president is not enough.” Of course, recent polling shows that Obama has a commanding 94-0 lead among black voters.

re: #312 Tigger2

At this point, I don't think anybody can realistically say Obama can lose (barring him wiping his ass with the American flag or some similar catastrophe). Which means the house/senate races become that much more important. This election is starting to just boil down to 1 thing: voter turnout, and how that turnout affects the House and Senate races. If the polls continue to get worse for Romney, no amount of magical fairy dust, tinkering with the numbers, or outright bullshit will convince people that this race is remotely close.

Now, that can change things on both sides. Obama voters think he has this thing won, so they might not bother. Romney voters think he has no prayer, so they don't show up. Personally, I think that it will be much more detrimental to the supposed 'loser' in the polls. I think it behooves the Dems to go for the throat on this one: try everything they can to push the polls in hopes of crushing any possible enthusiasm on the Republican side. That's how they hold the Senate and possibly take the House.

Obviously, the same is true for the Republicans. Do what they can to keep it close, otherwise they could lose both houses of Congress.

Too much time left for shit to go down. Don't think it impossible that Obama could lose, just highly improbable. Who knows, may Drudge really is onto a bombshell that will hurt Obama in the polls. Maybe a war will break out a week before the election. Perhaps the September jobs numbers will drive unemployment back up. Hard to say and I'm not convinced that nothing can go wrong at this point.

VDH pointed out the other day that, for all intents and purposes, Carter had the '80 election right up til the last week and the only debate. He'd been leading in the polls and there was a lot of talk that Reagan might not be able to pull it off. And while I disregard the general "poll truther" sentiment of VDH's article, that one truth still does exist. Don't consider this race over til Election Day.

re: #312 Tigger2

I wouldn't mind that one bit right now; the days of the GOP acting as the "loyal opposition" are long gone, replaced with an opposition that will block and stall at all costs anything that the Democrats want to get done, even if it's the right thing to do or is good for the nation.

Slightly before my time, but I'm guessing that the debates of the time were much more important than they are today because of the easy access to information we have today compared to the past. I know I'm shooting from the hip, but I'll guess that many more folks today, and probably in the past ~10 years or so, had already decided who they're voting for months in advance (again, barring any radical changes in the candidates).

I agree, it's not over 'til it's over, and there's always a chance of shit happening.

In classic DARVO fashion, they see ME as the family embarrassment, and a kind of anti-Christ for my support of science, reason, gay rights, and (worst of all) Obama. CAn Mitt Romney win over Libertarians?

From the Blaze article:
“If Romney wants to carry libertarians, he needs to start talking about cutting the actual year-over-year totals that taxpayers shell out for big-ticket items such as Social Security, Medicare, and defense,” writes Gillespie, before going on to encourage the GOP to refrain from the foreign policy need to be “the world’s policemen.” Gillespie also wrote that “Romney needs to make clear that his limited government philosophy means the feds shouldn’t be intervening in the private lives of individuals unless it’s absolutely central to the survival of the nation.”

Would be fitting with the mantra of late. Usually it's the Republicans who all vote in a block, are staunch defenders of tax cuts and accuse the Dems of raising taxes, and have the military and foreign policy to swing.

Now the House Republicans can't seem to get together to vote on anything (well, aside from repealing Obamacare and slut-punishing//), the Democrats using Bin Laden (too much, admittedly, but it's still their trophy) and their support of military families (one of FLOTUS' big involvements), and turning Romney's and Ryan's plans against them when it comes to taxes.

It's very ironic in a Schadenfreudian kind of way.

Frankly I am not all that crazy about Obama, but given the alternative in this election, Mitt Romney, I have no reservation at all about casting my vote to re-elect the President. What is George Will saying, unless you think Obama is perfect you should vote for the other candidate regardless? That's just plain stupid. There's an old saying, better the devil you know than the one you don't. And after 4 years of Mitt campaigning I still have no idea what he stands for or what he would actually do in office. Throw in all the extremists in the Tea Party Congress that Mitt is clearly beholden to, and there is no way I would vote for Mitt.

A bit of context.. since the midterms in 1980 when I could first vote, I have only ever pulled the straight ticket GOP lever, but not again. So its not like I am a lifelong Democrat criticizing the GOP just like I was raised to do. I'm the worst kind of enemy of the GOP, an apostate.

George Will could nolonger hide behind his phony facade of "the reasobale and fair guy " as long as he got his way . But like any other spoiled brat , the smiles turn to frowns , and the "always there " stupidity and racism comes to the for . In addition the irresistable urge to blow the dog whistle no matter what no matter where . Romney's 47% , Trent Lott's career ending faux[ but true] pas , are great examples of this malady . Oh I'm sure democrats do it too , but not at such critical or noteworthy times . Will shakes off his disguise , because he knows Romney blew it BIG TIME , and the worst pick he could have made was Ryan , completing the seeming goal of alienating all but the tea party faithfull who by this time have been reduced to fools . Will knows it's already over for Romney .

397 Aligarr  Tue, Oct 2, 2012 6:19:25pm

The only game plan the Republican Party has is the one they wont tell youabout ....because they dont have one . The platform at it's base is " get that blackman outta the white house" . There is such desperation and hatred involved that the right wing loons are busting at the seems . An unbelievable sign , is the guy who shot his wife , three children and then himself out of fear Obama would win the election . I have a few freinds who merely at the mention of Obama's name , their facial appearence actually changes before my eyes , the face actually turns red , fists become clenched and like projectile vomiting , the verbal tirade bursts forth . It's weird man , these people are living in Bizzarro Universe .Feel the hate -raw racism .
