National Review Lists Top 5 Fake Outrages in Pathetic 5-Year Old ‘Bombshell Video’

So very pathetic
Wingnuts • Views: 32,040

At National Review Online, where they’ve had to fire or distance themselves from two overt white nationalists this year, they’re gamely trying to pick out the “most controversial parts” of the 6-year old video dredged up today by the right in a pre-debate surprise attack gone pathetically wrong: The Most Controversial Quotes From Obama’s Hampton University Speech - by Eliana Johnson.

  1. Hurricane Katrina “was a powerful metaphor for what’s gone [in America] on for generations.”
  2. “It was also there — at Trinity United Church of Christ on the South Side of Chicago — that I met Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., who took me on another journey and introduced me to a man named Jesus Christ. It was the best education I ever had.”
  3. On his run for the Illinois State Senate: “And the second thing people would ask me gets back to the question about why we can’t seem to take the bullet out in this country and do the works and the deeds and unite this country.”
  4. “[The poor] may need help with basic skills — how to show up to work on time, wear the right clothes, and act appropriately in an office. We have to help them get there. That’s why I have called for $50 million to begin innovative new job training and workforce development programs.”
  5. “We need to give our young people some real choices out there so they move away from gangs and violence and connect them with growing job sectors. That is why I am also going to create a 5-E Youth Service Corps. The ‘E’s’ stand for energy efficiency, environmental education and employment. This program would directly engage disconnected and disadvantaged young people in energy efficiency and environmental service opportunities to strengthen their communities while also providing them with practical skills and experience in important and growing career field.”

It appears that President Obama went off script when he delivered the speech, but if he went on to deliver these remarks as written, I imagine they will cause some controversy.

Allow me to summarize Ms Johnson’s horribly outrageous, show-me-to-my-fainting-couch TOP 5 CONTROVERSIAL points made by Barack Obama 5 years ago at Hampton University:

  1. Hurricane Katrina. That’s all you need to say to get the right going.
  2. Obama met Jeremiah Wright and became a devout Christian.
  3. Obama wants to unite the country.
  4. Obama wants to help poor people get jobs and have better lives.
  5. Obama wants to help young people avoid lives of crime and violence and find good jobs.

Man, that’s pretty damning stuff. How will the Obama campaign survive this NUCLEAR BOMBSHELL?

“[The poor] may need help with basic skills ..."

Again, un-National-Review-abridged:

"We know that we have to invest in transitional jobs too. When there are people who are homeless, veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder from this war in Iraq, thousands of children aging out of foster care, we can't expect them to have all the skills they need for work. They may need help with basic skills ..."

Seriously they think this will cause controversy but Romney dissing nearly half of the country is no big deal? What planet do these fools live on?

5 blueraven  Tue, Oct 2, 2012 5:45:59pm

There is nothing in this speech. Nothing at all. BUT...it is a way to get Jeremiah Wright back in the news.
CNN just covered this (desperate for viewers much?)

Mitt Romney (again) goes where John McCain refused to.

And please dont tell me the Romney campaign has nothing to do with this.
Smells like desperation.

FTA:

The relationship between campaign manager Matt Rhoades and Matt Drudge — whose site first started teasing the video — has been widely reported, and the Drudge Report regularly features stories and headlines meant to give Romney a boost.

But asked whether Rhoades or anyone else on the campaign was involved in leaking the tape, communications director Gail Gitcho e-mailed, "We did not have any involvement."

...

Asked whether the campaign considers the video's content, which is still being sorted out, newsworthy, Gitcho responded, "What is the news? I don't know."

The free market is the greatest generator of wealth in history. I'm a firm believer in the free market, and the capacity of Americans to start a business, pursue their dreams and strike it rich. But when you look at the history of how we became an economic superpower, that rugged individualism and private-sector dynamism was always coupled with government creating a platform so that everybody could succeed, so that consumers weren't taken advantage of, so that the byproducts of capitalism, like pollution or worker injuries, were regulated. Creating that social safety net has not made us weaker – it's made us stronger. It liberated people to say, "I can move to another state, but if I don't find a job right away, my kids aren't going to go hungry. I can start a business, but if it doesn't work out, I'm going to be able to land on my feet." Making those kinds of commitments to each other – to create safety nets, to invest in infrastructure and schools and basic research – is just like our collective investment in national security or fire departments or police. It has facilitated the kind of risk-taking that has made our economy so dynamic. This is what it means for us to live in a thriving, modern democracy.

I really doubt he's going to do badly. During the primaries, ignoring the debate gaffes, he ran ruff-shod over the moderators, ignoring their instructions, demanding and taking time even after it was refused, and he'd interject in new charges interrupting opponents mid-answer, knocking them off balance. And then their big "October Surprise" is a video (and coverage of said video) that will piss off black people and ensure that they go and vote for Obama.

You mean the one that Fox News broadcast on June 5th, 2007 at 6pm EST?

FOX SPECIAL REPORT WITH BRIT HUME June 5, 2007 6:00 PM EST:

HUME: A new "USA Today"/Gallup poll of Democrats and of voters who lean Democratic finds presidential candidate Barack Obama virtually tied with Hillary Clinton at 30 and 29 percent respectively. Al Gore, who so far is not running, draws 17 percent. John Edwards trails at 11 percent. This is a national poll, of course.

Among Republicans and voters who lean that way, Rudy Giuliani still leads with 32 percent. John McCain has 19, Mitt Romney 12, and Fred Thompson, still not officially running, gets 11 percent.

But those results are contradicted by a new Rasmussen Reports poll, which finds Giuliani slipping, though still leading at 23 percent, Thompson in second place with 17, Romney now in third, and McCain sliding to fourth.

In the meantime, Senator Obama today said the Bush administration has done nothing to defuse what he calls a quiet riot among black Americans, a riot he suggests is ready to erupt. Obama said African American resentments and frustrations are building, especially, he said, because so many blacks from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are still displaced 21 months after Hurricane Katrina.

Obama warned against conditions similar to those in Los Angeles 15 years ago.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SEN. BARACK OBAMA (D), ILLINOIS: Not only do we still have the scars of the riots and the quiet riots that happen every day, but how in too many places all across the country, we haven't even bothered to take the bullet out.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HUME: Obama was speaking at a conference of black clergy at Virginia's Hampton University.

This is one reason I left the GOP after a lifetime of being right leaning.
I was adopted into a very liberal Hard core Catholic family. I was the Michael J. Fox of the family. One wall of my folks bedroom had a picture of Jesus, Mary and my Pops shaking JFK's hand.
It was a fun time for me getting them back for making me go to Catholic School.
At dinner table: So dad that Reagan guy is pretty cool..Don't you think?
He fired all my friends and colleagues at the FAA!
So they had it coming right?
Mom: Young man we don't talk politics at the table!
Cool..We'll talk later.. My poor folks..
When I had enough of the GOP several years ago I think it was the highlight of my Dad's life..He used to call me every night telling me about Maddow and to bring me up to speed on policy issues. I didn't just leave the GOP. No it wasn't my families influence or LGF or Fox news. After 2008 a bunch of my friends starting sending me pics of lynched black men with Obama's face photoshopped. I didn't leave..I ran away as fast as possible.

re: #192 Digital Display

I had the feeling that your Dad was cool, but talking to you about Maddow? He was beyond!

[Link: www.thedailybeast.com...]

In a move apparently timed to influence Obama’s first debate with Mitt Romney on Wednesday, the posting of the 40-minute video appeared to be an attempt to shift the campaign focus to racial matters, a subject the Republican nominee has not broached.

The video was obtained by the Daily Caller, a conservative website edited by Fox commentator Tucker Carlson and financed in part by Foster Freiss, a financier who is helping bankroll one of the pro-Romney Super PACs. It was touted by right-leaning Internet gossip Matt Drudge and played on the air by Sean Hannity, the most reliably Republican voice on Fox News Channel. Hannity accused the “left-wing press” of “hiding” the speech.

Carlson, on Hannity’s show, accused Obama of using a “phony” accent. That seems off base; while Obama dropped some g’s and spoke as if delivering a church sermon, the cadence is recognizably his. On a subsequent panel, Fox analyst Juan Williams, who is African-American, told Hannity that “you guys are playing the race card.” Hannity accused him of “protecting” the president.

Conservatives continue to insist that their vehement hatred and unparalleled disrespect for Obama has no racial basis whatsoever, indignantly declaring "stop pulling the race card" whenever an Obama supporter points to evidence suggesting otherwise.

And then yet another FOX News commentator, conservative strategist, GOP official or political wannabe, tea party pundit, hyperbolic radio shock-jock, or right wing blogger steps up to the plate ...

Some outright racists hate Obama merely because he is black.

But most of the hate for Obama that comes from right is tribal "Republican". Now, once they start attempting to express that hatred, the use racist words and imagery. But that is just because they are close at hand. They would have hated Kerry or Gore. They hated Clinton.

That doesn't make the racism anymore appropriate, mind you. But it does give those who express themselves in these horrible ways a place to hide, psychologically. They "know" they don't hate Obama because he is black. So they don't have to face how awful what they are saying is.

7 INCREDIBLE PERSONAL STORIES ABOUT MITT ROMNEY THAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW JOHN HAWKINS | 25 SEPTEMBER, 2012 - 16:31

Over the last few months, it has been absolutely stunning to see Mitt Romney, of all people, portrayed as some sort of greedy, ruthless, unfeeling corporate raider who plows over everyone who gets in his way so he can make a few dollars more. Of all the criticisms you could aim at Mitt Romney, there is none that has less validity than that one. In fact, the vast majority of people who read this column -- whether they're liberal, conservative, or moderate -- probably don't personally know a single person who has proven to be more generous and compassionate than Mitt Romney. Yes, really. It's okay if you're skeptical -- but, you won't be after you finish reading this column.

Well, if Romney gets elected, which Romney will be President?

Romney 1.0: The left-of-center Republican who was adamantly pro-choice and wasn’t a fan of Reagan or the Contract with America during his run at Ted Kennedy’s seat?

Romney 2.0: The moderate, center-right governor of Massachusetts who left after one term because he would have lost if he ran again in 2006?

Romney 3.0: The fire breathing “conservative alternative” to John McCain who pretended like he was the reincarnation of Reagan?

Romney 4.0: The guy who’s running now, who believes whatever you believe, no matter what you believe?

The ultimate punchline in this long comedy bit of a story, though, is that the speech Hannity says “so-called unbiased journalists have been trying to hide for years” was actually aired by Fox News. In the ultimate act of newsturbation™, you had Sean Hannity exposing the coverup of a speech his own network aired, interviewing Tucker Carlson about a speech he had also covered in 2007.

Mitt can't just make a good impression, PBO has to make a bad one. He needs both to happen.

Either way the MSM will spin it as a win for R-Money. I'm already prepared.

If Romney avoids discussing his favorite recipes for preparing orphans to serve at meetings of the Billionaire Cannibals Club, he will "exceed expectations."

The Daily Show had a great bit on the campaigns trying to lower expectations. In this debate, there should be no lowered expectations. Two graduates of Harvard Law, one a Master of the Universe and the other a Con Law Professor and President of the U.S. There should be nothing but the highest expectations.

re: #84 Bubblehead II

Personally, I am hoping that Romney will will let fly with one of his "zingers" and Obama will take it and return it and Romney's ass to him on a platter. That would be so sweet to see.

"And Mr. President, let me just say that many Americans I hear from on the campaign stump want to know where the Fast and Furious documents are that Daryl Issa subponaed months ago."

"Last I saw, they were vacationing in the Cayman Islands with your missing tax returns."

No, it will never happen. Maybe something close, though? The problem with Mitt's zingers is that most of them are going to depend on trying to make things Obama has said sound hypocritical, but Romney's entire campaign is built around hypocrisy, so there should be easy comebacks.

Hannity would call into radio shows, and would apparently get other listeners to respond to his asinine opinions more than to the host.

David Frum has a tendency to tilt at windmills while grasping at straws, but nevertheless he's neither an idiot nor a lunatic. I wish that there were more like him in the Republican party. I doubt that I would necessarily be more inclined to agree with them, but it would be nice to hear from an opposition that had arguments based on something more substantive than whatever conspiracy theory the right-wing radio shock jocks are ranting about this week.

Heh. Yep. I really like DF, despite his fixation on "the team" and work on pushing him towards a Frum like understanding of "conservatism" (as it currently exists in america, alas, rather than pure real conservatism which is as truly need by our nation as true radicals are. )

361 Bulworth  Wed, Oct 3, 2012 8:04:21am
1.Hurricane Katrina “was a powerful metaphor for what’s gone [in America] on for generations.”

2.“It was also there — at Trinity United Church of Christ on the South Side of Chicago — that I met Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., who took me on another journey and introduced me to a man named Jesus Christ. It was the best education I ever had.”

3.On his run for the Illinois State Senate: “And the second thing people would ask me gets back to the question about why we can’t seem to take the bullet out in this country and do the works and the deeds and unite this country.”

4.“[The poor] may need help with basic skills — how to show up to work on time, wear the right clothes, and act appropriately in an office. We have to help them get there. That’s why I have called for $50 million to begin innovative new job training and workforce development programs.”

5.“We need to give our young people some real choices out there so they move away from gangs and violence and connect them with growing job sectors.

These are all very shocking comments. I can't imagine he survives this. ////
