Pre-Debate, Restless Romney

The vulture capitalist and the pea
Politics • Views: 25,229

In the lowering expectations category, a Romney aide told Buzzfeed that Mitt spent a miserable sleepless night on Monday.

Romney got virtually no sleep Monday night, an aide said, blaming a freight train that passed through a grade crossing near the hotel and blew its horn roughly every hour all through the night. The candidate’s sleep deprivation so worried his staff that the campaign looked into switching hotels. The logistics were ultimately too tough, the aide said, and there was concern about how it would look.

Romney’s not used to this. Normally, while sleeping at his beach-front chalet or his lake-front secluded estate, there are none of these “freight trains” that seem to plague the lives of the little people.

New feature - if you post a link to an image file, you no longer need to add that 'rel="shadowbox"' code to make it pop open in a lightbox-style dialog. It's all automatic.

You can either type in the "<a>" tags yourself or use the link button at upper right of the comment form.

For example...

If it works, that should pop open with the shadowbox effect instead of opening in a new window...

Hey, it turns out that the sanctions against Iran really are crippling -- so much so that even Mahmoud Admadinejad is admitting it and Benjamin Netanyahu now has sanctions fever. Based on my own sanctions model, I'd predict that the sanctions are now becoming so costly that Iran will in fact be willing to compromise on its nuclear program -- but any concessions will seem tiny compared to how devastating the sanctions have been.

Boom.

I see that Eric son of Erick has weighed in on the years-old Obama "bombshell" video.
And, as one would expect from a Pavlovian response, he's gleefully tooting that dog whistle.

[Link: politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com...]

"I think that there is no material significance here, but the Republicans are very good at taking nothing and turning it into what appears to be something," Boyce Watkins, founder of yourblackworld.com, said on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."

He added: "We have to remember that we live in a country that has for 400 years been poisoned by the psychological disease of racism and it doesn't take much to spark that back up."

Countering, conservative blogger and CNN contributor Erick Erickson said Obama's comments were telling of the president's personal views on race in the United States.

"He's addressing a largely black crowd and making the point that very clearly, that they in New Orleans got treated differently from people in New York and people in Florida because they somehow weren't part of the American community," Erickson said. "That's fanning the flames."

Erickson after the stupid comments he made during the DNC and about Elizabeth Warren really shouldn't be able to talk about "fanning the flames." Besides, Obama wasn't talking about race in the response. He was talking about incompetence that transcended racial barriers but when you're like Eric ERickson and need to feel victimized I can see why one would ignore what he actually said.

Texas, Plaintiffs Reach Deal in "Dead Voter" Lawsuit

A lawsuit by four registered voters alleging that the state of Texas was violating their civil rights by purging them from voter rolls has been dropped after the plaintiffs and the state reached an agreement.

The Texas residents brought the suit after receiving letters from their county registrar indicating that the office had reason to believe the voters were dead. Elections officials stated the voters would be dropped from the voter rolls if they did not respond to a letter asking them to prove they were alive within 30 days.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs won an injunction last month to stop the process after tens of thousands of letters were sent out, including many to voters who were still alive.

"A'hm not dead yet!"

Here's the jQuery code to automatically open any linked image files with the "fancybox" effect. I install a click handler on the document object, to catch all clicks on 'a' tags and check the extension of the file in the 'href' attribute. If it's not an image it returns true so the click is processed normally.

$(document).on('click', 'a', function() {
	var ext = $(this).attr('href').split('.').pop().toLowerCase();
	if (ext == 'jpg' || ext == 'jpeg' || ext == 'gif' || ext == 'png') {
		$.fancybox.open($(this), LGF.fancyBoxSettings);
		return false;
	}
	return true;
});

THE TOP 14 BIBLICAL WAYS TO ACQUIRE A WIFE (author unknown)

• Find an attractive prisoner of war, bring her home, shave her head, trim her nails, and give her new clothes. Then she's yours. (Deuteronomy 21:11-13)
• Find a prostitute and marry her. (Hosea 1:1-3)
• Find a man with seven daughters, and impress him by watering his flock. (Moses -- Exodus 2:16-21)
• Purchase a piece of property, and get a woman as part of the deal. (Boaz -- Ruth 4:5-10)
• Go to a party and hide. When the women come out to dance, grab one and carry her off to be your wife. (Benjaminites -- Judges 21:19-25)
• Have God create a wife for you while you sleep. Note: this will cost you. (Adam -- Genesis 2:19-24)
• Agree to work seven years in exchange for a woman's hand in marriage. Get tricked into marrying the wrong woman. Then work another seven years for the woman you wanted to marry in the first place. That's right. Fourteen years of toil for a wife. (Jacob -- Genesis 29:15-30)
• Cut 200 foreskins off of your future father-in-law's enemies and get his daughter for a wife. (David -- 1 Samuel 18:27)
• Even if no one is out there, just wander around a bit and you'll definitely find someone. (It's all relative, of course.) (Cain -- Genesis 4:16-17)
• Become the emperor of a huge nation and hold a beauty contest. (Xerxes or Ahasuerus -- Esther 2:3-4)
• When you see someone you like, go home and tell your parents, "I have seen a ... woman; now get her for me." If your parents question your decision, simply say, "Get her for me. She's the one for me." (Samson -- Judges 14:1-3)
• Kill any husband and take HIS wife (Prepare to lose four sons, though). (David -- 2 Samuel 11)
• Wait for your brother to die. Take his widow. (It's not just a good idea; it's the law.) (Onana and Boaz -- Deuteronomy or Leviticus, example in Ruth)
• Don't be so picky. Make up for quality with quantity. (Solomon -- 1 Kings 11:1-3)

Seriously, though, the love stories of Ruth and Boaz (the land was a technicality) and of Rachel and Joseph were very touching. TY- and serendipity.

Tomorrow AM I've got a post on Rachel Carson and DDT

The source is interesting because it is more left of center. Basically, they take issue with how Carson's message was hijacked at the expense of the science.

The more I read on the subject, the more confused I become. Too many agendas, you know?

But I found it today, and posted a comment on it.

"This hurts Mitt," said 2008 Romney consultant Alex Castellanos, who has at times been a harsh critic of his current campaign. "Mitt's window to turn the economic debate around is [Wednesday.] And his alleged supporters just shit on it. An abysmally selfish and stupid event."

The problems are all the same as they were the last time you brought up this stuff.

A) DDT was never banned for use in vector control, which is where it's actually useful in fighting disease.

B) It was banned in agricultural use, as a general pesticide, and for mass continual sprayings, because doing so quickly breeds immune mosquitoes.

B1) This can be easily seen in areas where it was overused, and where there are now lots of DDT resistant mosquitoes

C) The effects of DDT in the ecosystem are real, and understood, and the completely speculative science of people completely outside the field, which is what you've got in the report you cite, is silly.

re: #174 researchok

Right.

The article however goes beyond that.

I don't see anywhere that it does, no. It does perpetuate many of the myths and pieces of disinformation that I've seen spread elsewhere though. Typical would be this part right here:

While excellent literature, however, Silent Spring was very poor science. Carson claimed that DDT was threatening many avian species with imminent extinction. Her evidence for this, however, was anecdotal and unfounded. In fact, during the period of widespread DDT use preceding the publication of Silent Spring, bird populations in the United States increased significantly, probably as a result of the pesticide’s suppression of their insect disease vectors and parasites.

Carson rightly showed that specific avian species, mostly the ones that eat fish from waterways, were being affected by DDT. This has been proved to be true. The article stupidly, and rather obviously, talks about all bird populations, when DDT only affected a certain subpopulation. it's a classic bait-and-switch tactic used in propaganda.

By the way, it looks like the author of that piece is Robert Zubrin, a global warming denier. Why are you looking to him for science? He's one of those "CO2 is good for plants" fucking morons. He even thinks all global warming is good.

Why is this guy someone you trust for science?

Go dispatch Texas for me...I can't stand them.

Why's that? After they got the new ownership team headed by Nolan Ryan, they have been quite outstanding.

It was during the late 1990s-mid 2000s (under the ownership of the rightwing slug Tom Hicks), where the team was literally run into the ground and was rife with scandal and mismanagement. I'm personally ecstatic that the scumbag went broke, and the Rangers got competent ownership.

Trusting a global warming denier for "science" is like trusting Tom Cruise for psychiatric advice.

Well, he's not the classic denier, he's something even fucking weirder-- he thinks it's happening, and he thinks it's awesome. That's a denial of science even beyond what a normal denier can get up to. That's like saying "It's great that I'm on fire now. I can see so much better!"

Open Society Foundation isn't just a left-wing equivalent of the Kochs...for example:

Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the opposition party, the National League for Democracy, was arrested for the first time in July 1989. She has been detained on three separate occasions and has spent more than 15 years under house arrest in Rangoon. Released from her latest sentence in November 2010, she continues to work to achieve democracy and national reconciliation in Burma in spite of continued threats and oppression from the ruling military regime. On her hand is written the name of Soe Min Min, a member of the National League for Democracy who was arrested in 2008 for praying at Shwedagon Pagoda for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi. He is serving a nine year sentence at Insein prison. Update: Soe Min Min was released from Insein prison according to a conditional amnesty announced by the Burmese regime on January 12, 2012.

At least they work for the better good of the planet.

Holy shit. DDT again? Really?

For god's damn sake.

I know, right? Of all the lost causes to champion, that one is the weirdest.

it really takes only a simple knowledge of biology to understand why widespread agricultural use of DDT-- or of many forms of pesticide-- is a bad idea. Resistant populations are inevitable. Higher levels of usage create mass resistance very quickly. Limiting the use preserves efficacy for vector control.

I can ask that very same question to you.

No, you can't. I'm not the one pointing to a guy who thinks global warming would be great and saying he's written a good article on another environmental subject. I'm the one who's asking you why you're referencing him, and demosntraing the flaws in his argument. So no, you can't ask that question of me.

Just because someone is wrong about some things doesn't mean they are wrong on everything.

Of course not. But if someone is very, very, very, very, very wrong about an environmental subject, then you should be a lot more suspect of their views on other environmental subjects.

This is not a difficult concept to grasp.

Not at all- but that doesn't mean he wasn't a great chess player, as you noted or was wrong about everything all the time.

He specifically addressed Carson's book and even noted how politicized it was- quoting those who did just that

Excerpt:

Those who praised the book were often quite open about its essentially polemical character: “No one is in a better position than Miss Carson to arouse the indignation of the public,” noted The Nation.[30] While Lamont Cole, writing in Scientific American, was “glad this provocative book has been written,” he admitted that it was not a “fair and impartial appraisal of all the evidence” but “a highly partisan selection of examples and interpretations that support the author’s thesis.” This tactic is apparently justified, to his mind, by the fact that “the extreme opposite has been impressed on the public by skilled professional molders of public opinion.”[31] Such hostility to the existing business, scientific, and governmental establishment, which is only now showing signs of abating among some environmentalists, created a sense that ecological PR needs to fight business PR. That, at least, is what Commonweal might have had in mind with this otherwise cryptic lead for its review: “Silent Spring represents a major breakthrough in the communications industry.”[32]

re: #348 Interesting Times

Another excerpt:

Carson’s critics certainly used some unscientific arguments against her. Chemical and Engineering News claimed that she had ignored “the sound appraisals of such responsible, broadly knowledgeable scientists as the President of the National Academy of Sciences, the members of the President’s Scientific Advisory Committee, the Presidents of the Rockefeller Foundation and Nutrition Foundation,” as if mere arguments from authority would settle the issue.[36] But Carson herself may have invited them by suggesting that scientists who favor present pesticide practices “prostitute their professional work in order to win lucrative research fellowships,” as a review in The American City put it. “This callous smear of the professional integrity of those who disagree with her is ugly. Miss Carson would be indignant if they countered that she based her writings on what would sell the most books rather than on what is fair and impartial analysis. But one suggestion follows another.”[37]

Critics typically accused the book of being one-sided, presenting none of the benefits to health and food production that had been wrought by pesticide use. Science argued that the book was not “a judicial review or a balancing of the gains and losses; rather, it is the prosecuting attorney’s impassioned plea for action against the use of these new materials which have received such widespread acceptance, acceptance accorded because of the obvious benefits their use has conferred.”[38] Carson’s attitude toward technology, Chemical and Engineering News noted, would mean “disease, epidemics, starvation, misery and suffering incomparable and intolerable to modern man.”[39]

Most seriously, Carson was accused of misrepresenting or misunderstanding the evidence she cited. A review in Archives of Internal Medicine asserted that Silent Spring “as science, is so much hogwash.”[40] I have not been able to locate any review that attempted to take up her errors in the presentation of scientific material in any great detail. Still, the general points that are mentioned are far from trivial, such as Carson’s assertion that birth-to-death exposure to “dangerous chemicals” is a new phenomenon,[41] or her failure to appreciate that the dose makes the poison.[42] Lamont Cole’s generally favorable review treats this question in a very curious way: “Errors of fact are so infrequent, trivial and irrelevant to the main themes that it would be ungallant to dwell on then.” He mentions one or two, but more to the point he finds two of Carson’s main conceptual foundations highly suspect: her assumption that here is a “balance of nature,” and that insects who exhibit resistance to pesticides will turn into super bugs.[43] Other Carson partisans and critics have pointed to different factual errors.[44]

From the review.

If the guy is wrong, well, that is one thing. Simply dismissing an article because you don't like the source is wrong.

I have offended the gods of FM radio.

I currently have Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown stuck in my head.

What was my sin?

What can I offer as a sacrifice?

This is why I only listen to classical music. So when I get something stuck in my head, it's usually this:

re: #364 Interesting Times

Not a birther, either.

No secret there.

In fact, my politics have substantially migrated to the left.

(WW had the best line referring to me- He's a recovering righty' or something to that effect)

Now, having said that, I do have issues with how some of the left respond to the 'other side' in the same way lots of the right respond to teh left.

Politics is not zero sum game. Notwithstanding the take no prisoners approach (heightened during election season) a healthy democracy requires a healthy opposition.

It's funny- I'm far closer to left of center than I've ever been (I'm an Obama fan, big time)- and yet I am astonished at just how vicious and personal attacks can be just for having a different idea.

It is a big reason I refuse to make the leap, so to speak.

Ironically, Ezra Klein is someone I relate to. He's far more honest than most of the lefties out there.

About Carson's book being responsible for millions of deaths. I've already said that. You read selectively.

Right.There were no deaths related to the cessation of DDT use.

That's why there is a movement to bring it back in some circumstances.

Bobby Fischer is, by the same measure, an ex-anti-Semite for the last three years.

Perhaps he has been enlightened. Or eaten by worms. Or re-incarnated as a worm.

Pick your religion.

Right.There were no deaths related to the cessation of DDT use.

No, dude, it was never banned for vector control. It just never was. It was banned for agricultural use. So it's not being 'brought back', it never went away.

But if you mass spray it, then you get quick resistant populations of mosquitoes. So the banning of it actually preserves the efficacy of it for vector control.

How many times does this have to get explained to you? What part are you not understanding?

Harvard does not say Carson's book was responsible for millions of deaths. That article you Paged did. That's your credibility on the line.

Also, see #295.

re: #393 Sheeplord

From Harvard CID

According to the World Health Organisation estimates, there are 300-500 million cases of malaria each year and around one million deaths. These numbers are climbing, by up to 20 percent a year in some regions. Peru, for example, experienced a seven-fold increase between 1990 and 1996. Cases of a fatal strain of malaria jumped from 140 to 36 000 in the Loreto region of the Amazon basin. South Africa had 8 750 cases and 44 deaths in 1995, but nearly 51000 cases and 393 deaths in 1999. Just one village near Oka Priyanti's home in Indonesia had around 15 cases a year through the early 1990s, but 921 last year.

Residents of Western countries are also at risk. Not only are travellers to the developing world being infected but occasionally disease carrying mosquitoes are being brought into Europe by aircraft from the tropics.

According to many scientists and health experts, a number of factors are responsible for the resurgence, including the increasing resistance of the malaria parasite to treatment drugs. But one reason towers above all others.

"For years, the rich, developed nations that no longer have malaria have pressured tropical countries which do into giving up DDT," says Don Roberts, professor of tropical public health at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. "When countries stop using DDT, malaria spirals out of control." Even so, the United Nations Environmental Program is on the verge of a momentous, and controversial, decision - to phase out the use of DDT."

re: #394 wrenchwench

Parsing words as argument?

The issue is the non use of DDT for a long time.

See the quote above.

397 The Ghost of a Flea  Wed, Oct 3, 2012 6:18:10pm

The article is also crap because it's citing older articles that attack a straw man version of Rachel Carson.

It is not my contention that chemical insecticides must never be used. I do contend that we have put poisonous and biologically potent chemicals indiscriminately into the hands of persons largely or wholly ignorant of their potentials for harm. We have subjected enormous numbers of people to contact with these poisons, without their consent and often without their knowledge.

From Silent Spring.

Any argument that starts from "Rachel Carson spearheaded the ban of DDT and that killed millions worldwide" is horseshit.

Are there any substantive errors in the article?

Is there a reason Harvard should not have published the article?

No, there's a reason you should not have said, "Here's what some folks at Harvard had to say on the subject".

re: #398 researchok

As I noted earlier Carson herself understood here message was hijacked.

That doesn't explain why you're holding up an article that presents Carson as the perpetrator. Or that its copypastaing reviews and presenting said reviews as somehow factual, as opposed to contrary opinions that are also pearl-clutching about Carson's purported callousness, nor the fact that Carson's "intent" was hijacked first by a massive smear campaign before the book was published. The chemical combines that smeared Rachel Carson made a choice to ignore a message that would actual help people--use chemicals carefully and as directed--and crafted the false dichotomy of Ban It Entirely versus Keep Dumping It On The Market.

Also, your "Harvard" piece is from Reader's Digest, and fails to address that DDT resistance in mosquitoes was a major factor in not using it any more. Resistance was already an issue in the 50s and remains so. Dumping metric tons of a pesticide into an environment results in adaptation...just like we're seeing now with Round-Up resistant weeds. DDT in the 3rd World was supposed to be used inside small houses, not fogged across agricultural land.
