PBS Statement Regarding October 3 Presidential Debate

Romney singles out PBS for attack

The Public Broadcasting Service has issued an official response to Mitt Romney’s statement last night that he plans to fire Big Bird: PBS Statement Regarding October 3 Presidential Debate.

ARLINGTON, VA - October 4, 2012 - We are very disappointed that PBS became a political target in the Presidential debate last night. Governor Romney does not understand the value the American people place on public broadcasting and the outstanding return on investment the system delivers to our nation. We think it is important to set the record straight and let the facts speak for themselves.

The federal investment in public broadcasting equals about one one-hundredth of one percent of the federal budget. Elimination of funding would have virtually no impact on the nation’s debt. Yet the loss to the American public would be devastating.

A national survey by the bipartisan research firms of Hart Research and American Viewpoint in 2011 found that over two-thirds of American voters (69%) oppose proposals to eliminate government funding of public broadcasting, with Americans across the political spectrum against such a cut.

As a stated supporter of education, Governor Romney should be a champion of public broadcasting, yet he is willing to wipe out services that reach the vast majority of Americans, including underserved audiences, such as children who cannot attend preschool and citizens living in rural areas.

For more than 40 years, Big Bird has embodied the public broadcasting mission - harnessing the power of media for the good of every citizen, regardless of where they live or their ability to pay. Our system serves as a universally accessible resource for education, history, science, arts and civil discourse.

Over the course of a year, 91% of all U.S. television households tune in to their local PBS station. In fact, our service is watched by 81% of all children between the ages of 2-8.

Each day, the American public receives an enduring and daily return on investment that is heard, seen, read and experienced in public media broadcasts, apps, podcasts and online - all for the cost of about $1.35 per person per year.

If there's a pile of shit on the ground, count on Mitt Romney to find a way to step in it.

And here's a classic:

Mr. Rogers absolutely winning at a Senate hearing about PBS.

Imagine having such an unthinking asshole on the international stage talking to our allies (or worse, countries we're not closely allied with).

Could it be that the only thing Romney told the truth about is the thing that gets him collectively down-dinged? Imagine if he'd told the truth about everything he intends to do. Guess that's why he didn't.

I wouldn't call him "unthinking." I'm sure he thinks a lot about what the audience he happens to be in front of at that moment wants to hear

The GOP wants to give you a voucher for $1.35 if you fill out the right paperwork.

Well, he already did, and managed to insult just about every country he was in.

Somewhat correct math:
1.35/person x 300 million people = 405 million $/yr
Current borrowing rate: 2,000 million $/day
PBS per year is < 1/4 of our daily borrow rate.
Insignificant.
Or, our borrowing rate is absurd and not sustainable.
Or both.

Sadly, I can't imagine that happening today with republicans.

Conservatives, Republicans, aren't against PBS because of spending. It's because of an ideological difference between a more progressive world outlook that includes history and science some of which includes evolution and climate change which is counter to their biblical view of the world.

Oh, please. This is red meat to the right, and it won't change anyone else's vote.

It is a simple fact of political life these days that the R candidate has to say stuff that, if he has at least half a brain, he knows is horseshit. It might be clean coal, it might be "the jury is out on global warming", it might be "abolish the EPA". But they'll say what they have to say. If it was any other R they'd be saying the same thing. It's a ritual.

Just this week PBS had an outstanding documentary based on Nicholas Kristoff's book Half The Sky. Everyone should try and catch it if you can. You just don't get this kind of quality stuff on network tv.

THIS.

It's not about the money. It's that a large number of idiot wingnuts in this country want to get rid of things like PBS and NPR because they consider them socialist indoctrination tools, like public schools. And because the RWNJ noise machine has convinced these morons that both NPR and PBS get a much larger slice of the pie than they really do.

19 HappyWarrior  Thu, Oct 4, 2012 12:10:24pm

By the way by cutting PBS, Romney's taking people out of work. Not sure how many are employed by PBS but those are still people's jobs. This is something those who want to cut government never think about.

20 A Man for all Seasons  Thu, Oct 4, 2012 12:11:51pm

Well it's time for my thoughts on the debate. I ended up watching it 3 times last night. They call politics a blood sport so I thing we can use a sports perspective on this.
Most games you want to come out and smack the other team in the mouth, overall it means little.
Does anybody here really believe that after the first period with the Lakers down by 10 they will lose?
Let's say your football team is down by 7 mid way through the 2nd quarter do you change the channel and watch a lifetime movie?
Usually the stronger, smarter, faster team wins in the end. Edge Team Obama.

Oh, yeah they would be just fine if the 700 Club and shows like that got public funding.

Yes,but the money is the excuse. Show that the money is bullshit, then they either have to STFU or be honest about why they think PBS has to go.

It's more than just the people PBS directly employs, too. A lot of the shows you see on PBS are produced independently, so there are a lot more people whose lives would be affected than just PBS employees.

It's that easy when you've never had to be beneath anybody. And it looks like he's tried his damnedest to become the opposite of the only person who seemingly ever held sway over him - his Father.

We have the for profit version of PBS called The Learning Channel (TLC).

TLC's number one rated show is "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo".

I have a friend who owns a recording studio, and he does a ton of work for all the Sesame properties as well as other PBS shows. He'd take a huge hit if that revenue stream dried up.

PBS' Civil War would not have been made without public funds. Ken Burns himself says so.

After it showed, and became a cultural phenomenon - which spawned a whole Civil War collecting sub culture, the History Channel's Civil War documentaries pretty much try and copy the PBS model (but in the History Channel version people reading in bad accents original letters) and instead of showing still pictures of the actual event being talked about they show out of order Civil War photos and shots of Civil War reenacters marching (same scene over and over).
