Undercover Video: New Mexico GOP Trains Poll Workers to Suppress Votes

Republican trainees could compromise integrity of November election

Via ProgressNow New Mexico: VIDEO: NM GOP Trains Poll Workers to Suppress Votes.

Undercover video recorded by ProgressNow New Mexico shows the Republican Party training poll challengers in illegal tactics that could potentially restrict the voting rights of as many as 1-in8 New Mexicans in November.

A recording of the September 26th official “Poll Challenger Training” conducted by the Republican Party shows a GOP & Tea Party leader giving false and/or misleading information about voting rights and regulations to the training’s attendees. The training was replete with misinformation about ID requirements, the use of provisional ballots, assistance for Spanish-speaking citizens, change of address requirements, and the rights of the disabled at the polls.

The group even created it’s own poll challenger guide complete with instructions on how to demand ID and force legal voters to vote by provisional ballot in blatant contradiction with election law.

[…]

The training was conducted by Pat Morlen, a Tea Party activist and former Sandoval County Commission Republican candidate who currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Sandoval County Republican Party. A similar training was also given by the GOP on September 5th and another is scheduled for Thursday, October 4th

[…]

There are links at the article to the GOP poll challenger guide, and to part of the video of the training session. This clip documents the trainer giving false information:

These people are a threat to democracy, not just Democrats.

More here:

[…]

Morlen also disparaged disabled New Mexicans, opining, “if the person can’t even say their name, at least their name, I don’t see why they should be voting.”

Obama has a narrow lead over Romney in the New Mexico polls, projecting a very close race. This particular training was filmed just two days after a study was released estimating 10 million Latinos could be disenfranchised by various voter suppression efforts. While Morlen’s statements are easily debunked, New Mexico voters are likely to be harassed and intimidated by these volunteer “voter challengers” armed with false information. But New Mexican voters aren’t the only targets; the national Tea Party group True the Vote has mobilized a large army of volunteers to go to the polls all over the country to harass voters. True the Vote tested out their voter intimidation skills during Gov. Scott Walker’s (R-WI) recall election in June, when poll watchers blocked students and African Americans from voting.

Similar efforts are underway in Arizona. There is also Tea Party involvement in that state.

Vote Fraud Watchers Aim For 5,000 Observers At Arizona Polls

[…]

For a long time, the Republican National Committee engaged in election fraud prevention; until 1982, when the RNC was sued by the Democratic Party for targeting minorities in violation of the Voting Rights Act. The RNC signed an agreement — that a federal judge has upheld through 2017 — curbing its fraud prevention efforts. The absence of an official party apparatus has given rise in the last few years to independent Republican groups.

Verify the Vote is one such group. Its co-chairs repeatedly declined to be interviewed for this story, but a 20 minute video on their website lays out their goals. Brad Zinn — a tea partier, comedy magician, and reporter for the conservative news site Western Free Press — is co-chair of Verify the Vote, along with Jennifer Wright, a lawyer and former Tea Party candidate for Phoenix mayor.

“In the last four years, we’ve all been made aware that there are forces at work to steal power from the people by manipulating the vote,” Wright said in the video. She never said what those forces are, but Verify the Vote outlines a few approaches to stop them. They want volunteers to review voter rolls and registrations, to monitor early ballot counts, and they encourage like-minded voter fraud hawks to get hired as poll workers.

Why, yes we have. Another blatant example of what I just posted in the last thread: every day is opposite day for Republicans. Just look at what they accuse the other side of doing for confirmation that they, themselves are doing it.

Likely just planning on the election being over before anyone looks into it and then it's too late. Kinda like Mitt's debate last night. He lies his ass off knowing he'll get away with it and be called the winner. By the time the facts come out he'll have moved on to the next set of lies.

Pearce: Demand Voter ID Even Though It Is Not in NM Law | New Mexico Telegram

When asked by a reporter for The Nation about the video that showed a Republican official was training Republican poll challengers to demand voter ID, U.S. Steve Pearce says that Republican poll challengers should demand voter ID -- even though New Mexico law does not require voter ID.

Republicans in the state and around the nation have been pushing to require photo ID to vote. Republicans say that this will curb voting by those who are not registered. The specter of voter fraud has been overstated by Republicans in their attempt to institute voter fraud.

Efforts to institute voter ID in the New Mexico State Legislature have repeatedly failed in House committees.

From The Nation:

"We're simply saying that we're going to start, we're going to take it back it into our hands," said Pearce. "We should check for ID since you have to show an ID to do anything in America."

He did, however, admit that doing so would be against the law. "Its against New Mexico law to check for ID," the congressman conceded.

Wouldn't having scores of Republican poll watchers requesting voter ID even though there's no legal requirement for an ID cause confusion? "What do you think these poll watchers should do if someone refuses to show identification?" I asked.

"I just think we need to be asking the question," replied Pearce. "I don't think New Mexicans know how many people vote illegally.

So it's illegal. So arrest them for it.

I seriously don't get why people don't get arrested for some stuff in this country. It's often like if anything is highly political, you're unlikely to get arrested for it.

This is literally conspiracy to commit a crime. And a pretty fucking important crime. What the fuck.

This also shows the blatant, utter hypocrisy of the voter ID effort. It's not about preserving the right to vote. It's about denying the right to vote.

"I just think we need to be asking the question," replied Pearce. "I don't think New Mexicans know how many people vote illegally.

Related:

Bearing the voter-fraud torch was Secretary of State Dianna Duran, who proceeded to botch the effort from beginning to end. She announced early last year that New Mexico had a “culture of corruption,” a charge repeated in national media. (Just what we need.) Later she referred 64,000 possibly fraudulent voter records to the State Police. That number plummeted a year ago to 104 voters who were illegally registered to vote and 19 who actually voted illegally.

In other words, New Mexicans do know how many people vote illegally.

57 dragonfire1981  Thu, Oct 4, 2012 12:36:43pm

Here's my previous comment from 9/26:

I'm starting to suspect we'll see a lot of shenanigans on election day by Republican leaning individuals/poll workers, like perhaps:

- certain ballots mysteriously going missing or being declared invalid
- telling people they aren't registered or are ineligible to vote if they actually are
- lying about the hours the polls are open and/or mysterious early closures of polling places in more "urban" areas

It's sad really, but I truly suspect there are some people willing to go to some pretty unethical lengths to try and increase the chances of Obama losing.

Sometimes it sucks to be right. Election integrity is one of the bedrocks of a strong democracy.

I go back to a quote by the late Paul Weyrich which (paraphrased)says that the GOP doesn't want or need more people to vote. In fact the more people that vote, the less likely they know they are to win. This isn't a new thing in conservative circles at all. This is just the latest in a long line of efforts to suppress voting. It's been going on for 30 or more years.

Again, this is one of those cases where it would be less time, effort and money to do the right thing and be a hero to the American people. But no,once again The Spite Caucus rears it's ugly head and the assholes have to fuck with people. Heaven forbid that someone would get into public service to actually, you know,SERVE THE PUBLIC.

I know I've said this once or twice before, but god, Republicans are terrible

Particularly in our states. Or is it just that we see them more closely?

Intrade stocks back up to 68.9 Obama, 31.5 Romney

[Embedded content]

Obama should just save everybody the time and just concede now. He's obviously screwed.

But Obama is Jimmy Carter and Romney is Ronald Reagan! But yeah, this is what I expected given what I read about precedent on Silver's blog.

I am SO sorry for going OT this early, but I am bouncing off the walls right now. I just heard back from the hiring manager I've interviewed with, and they're making me an offer! I will be back in the working world soon.

Time to go brush up on my negotiation skills. :D

Congratulations!

Based on Republican logic, every GOP Congressman, Football Coach and Clergyman in the US is a sexual deviant.

Can the DOJ do anything about these "voter challenges"? Sounds like T'Baggers are trying to straight up intimidate Democratic voters.

Interesting site for potential undecided voters.

A short quiz to see which candidate you favor.

Seconded.
How this stuff gets ignored so much by the media is beyond me....

It didn't escape the Congressional Black caucus the are recruiting people to get to the polls to challenge the challengers.

What fucking country do these dirtbags think they're living in?

The one where a black man got elected POTUS over their objections.

They need to stop that from happening again, no matter the cost.

I'm disappointed in my state. At least I'm in the Lujan portion of it....
