Looks like Mitt is in the Matrix and the operator is uploading a program that teaches him how to play a piano.

Sorry, /nerd.

Well, considering Donald Trump said that the debate marked day one of the election, I guess that mean I have no choice but to vote for Mitt now.

God regarding Trump. I wonder if Donald is upset that Mitt didn't bring up the birth certificate.

Mormon Mexican cafe owners get death threats, hate mail, fake orders after refusing to allow Romney to use their restaurant for a campaign event.

Aguirre said that the trouble began after an article published by Denver Westword earlier this week reported that their mother had refused the Romney campaign’s offer because “religion and politics don’t mix.”

“Since this article came out we have been getting hate emails, from people across the country, people sending us death threats and people calling us telling us we are racist… that they hope we go out of business,” Aguirre wrote in a letter on Wednesday. “If we do go out of business our Annual Thanksgiving Feast to the needy would end. Last year we fed 5500 meals, this year we may serve above 6000 meals.”

That's the party of family values for ya!

Seriously? People death threaten over the stupidest things. I don't blame the cafe owners. They probably didn't want their cafe turning into a circus with a presidential candidate, one that has Secret Service protection at that visiting their cafe. People are idiots.

Well they shouldn't have tried to limit Romney's freedom of speech like that.

Freedom of Speech or is it Freedom of Peach.

@5, Yes such lovely people and so respectful of the First Amendment.

Poor Obama. I can imagine all the grief he's getting today for last night's performance. It wasn't good, but I don't think anyone who was going to vote for him is going to vote for Romney based on this one debate. Romney lied all night long. Hope that President Obama brings his A-game to the next 2 debates and calls Romney out on his lies to his face.

10 Cheechako  Thu, Oct 4, 2012 1:01:41pm

Romney looked and acted like the car salesman in the Honda commercial on TV: "See, this car has buttons, all kinds of buttons, large buttons, small buttons, and even a button for buttons!"

11 Ming  Thu, Oct 4, 2012 1:07:08pm

In hindsight, it seems logical for Romney to have rebooted himself as the "Rockefeller Republican liberal Governor of Massachusetts". That's exactly how he won the Massachusetts Governor's race in 2002. That persona gave him a come-from-behind victory in 2002. It was logical to morph into that now.

Enough to flood the airwaves with ads simply showing Mitt contradicting himself.

I think those ads will be effective in the long run. Romney will gain some short-term ground but as people see the ads and see that Romney lied his ass off last night, we'll see a backlash.

granted I am listening to MSNBC but even Bubbles Greenspan was grilling Sununu on Romney's lies. Obama let Romney hang himself last night and in the long run I think it will have been effective.

I really think so. I think Obama could have done better last night but sometimes you're not your best and if that happens, look for and exploit what your opponent did or didn't do. In this case it was Mitts complete departure from what he's been saying on the stump and in interviews.

29 researchok  Thu, Oct 4, 2012 1:29:05pm

Notwithstanding last nights show, I believe Obama will have a much better showing in the upcoming debates.

National security and to a lesser (but not by much) foreign policy are Obama's clear strong suits. Romney cannot recover from his poor judgement and disastrous reaction to the Libya debacle. That will stick.

Obama also has to do a better job explaining his social policies.

The right has done a good job at framing the differences between him and Romney as an 'either or' vision for America, subtly implying Obama rejects individuals freedoms in favor of big government.

That is not quite true. What Obama is doing is not unlike upgrading to new technologies.

I do not believe he is reforming the American experiment to replace it with something else. It seems to me Obama is looking further ahead. Surely he knows some of his ideas will be challenged, but I don't believe he fears that. He just wants to point the nation in the right direction as he sees it.

Is he getting it right all the time? Nope- and I don't believe he'd disagree. This is new territory and a new world to boot and that world is changing. There will be a lot more than 'bumps in the road' and that's OK. That is the real world. He is no messiah and neither is Romney.

America's greatness lies in her ability to self correct- and to make compromise succeed in a most spectacular way.

It's been a while since I've been in Madison, looks like it's on Bascom Hill. Definitely a big place that can fit tons of people. Though it would be sort of awkward for people watching, since it looks like the stage is about halfway down the hill, facing to the side.

Gish Gallop - RationalWiki

The Gish Gallop, named after creationist Duane Gish, is the debating technique of drowning the opponent in such a torrent of half-truths, lies, and straw-man arguments that the opponent cannot possibly answer every falsehood in real time. The term was coined by Eugenie Scott of the National Center for Science Education.

The formal debating jargon term for this is spreading. You can hear some mindboggling examples here. It arose as a way to throw as much rubbish into five minutes as possible. In response, some debate judges now limit number of arguments as well as time. However, in places where debating judges aren't there to call bullshit on the practice, like the internet, such techniques are remarkably common.

I tend to agree. Obama is a master at the long game. I noticed a couple of times last night during the debate that Obama looked at Romney with an expression that had it been a gun would have shot Romney dead. I suspect it took all of his will power to keep from firing. He ran a nearly flawless campaign in 2008 and this one has been equally, if not more impressive. I have to think that he knows well what he's doing.

36 Achilles Tang  Thu, Oct 4, 2012 1:32:17pm

What I don't understand is how Obama let Romney get away with so many lies unchallenged aggressively.

For just one example, Romney plans to "create" 12 million jobs in his 4 years. I understand that just at the current rate there will be 12 million jobs created over 4 years, and that is not enough.

I can only hope he will have some testosterone injections before the next debate.

Information? Is that what Costa calls Mitt going back on everything he's said along with some cheap point about PBS being needed to be axed to fix the deficit? Really what world do they live on? Romney was confident sure, confidently lying.

Hearing about that huge crowd in Wisconsin. As I said, it's what you do with the debate that matters as much as the debate. Obama had a rough night last night but it seems like he's back on the stump and ready as ever.

48 JamesWI  Thu, Oct 4, 2012 1:47:10pm
