CNN on Romney's voodoo economics on tax breaks:

Earlier this week, Romney suggested one way to limit the tax breaks is to cap everyone's itemized deductions at $17,000. While that would certainly reduce the value of deductions for the rich, it's no guarantee that many still wouldn't get a net tax cut given Romney's promise to cut today's tax rates by 20%.

For example, someone with $1 million in taxable wage income subject to today's top rate of 35% would save $70,000 if that rate drops to 28%. If that same person also normally takes $100,000 in itemized deductions, he would lose about $23,240 in tax savings if those deductions are capped at $17,000.

In other words, his net tax cut would be $46,760 ($70,000 minus $23,240).

The Romney campaign, however, has also told CNNMoney that if Romney were to adopt such a cap on itemized deductions it would be paired with still-to-be-determined limits on personal exemptions and the tax-free benefit workers enjoy when their employer helps pay for their health insurance.

Depending where those limits are set, they could wipe out the tax savings above. Or they may not. It's impossible to say without further details.

Then in last night's debate, Romney suggested the deduction cap could be set at $25,000 or $50,000 instead of $17,000. That would change the math, too.

Then there's the issue of semantics.

Romney's promise to "not reduce the share" of taxes paid by the rich is not necessarily the same as saying the tax bills of some high-income filers wouldn't go down. It means that what high-income filers as a group contribute as a percentage of total revenue would be the same as it is today.

Which is another way of saying that the Republicans have no plan for how to actually deal with this specific crisis we face.

If I wanted to ask Mitt anything, I would ask him how he reconciles his apparent belief that this administration is intrusive and increasing government involvement in people's personal lives while he and his own party oppose the right to choose, gay marriage, and the Dream Act. I'd just love to see Mitt totally stumped as we saw him with the gay veteran who he tried to do to noa avail that he and his spouse didn't deserve benefits. Mitt was real fortunate that he got asked a ton about the debt and taxes last night because it's easier for him to bullshit about that but on social issues like those and foreign policy, he's going to be exposed more.

In Biblical interpretation, there are some who engage in a practice called "prooftexting" which is "the practice of using isolated quotations from a document to establish a proposition." In essence, it is a practice of pulling isolated passages, fragments, or even sometimes single words out of the Bible, removing them from their original context and then using similarities in language or symbolism to assert that the cited passages support a certain position or prophesied a certain event.

It's really dry stuff to me. I tried taking entry level economics in community college. It was such a boring and tough subject for me. I never thought I'd major in it but I had hoped to understand it better. Well, five years later I don't understand economics really any more than I did before. Too much Math and not enough stories- I ended up being a history BA and English BA minor.

i really think a large part of it is a cruel streak. I hate to judge someone I have never met but I've seen other wealthy politicians in actions. Ones who like Mitt were brought up wealthy and lived what you'd call a sheltered existence and they were able to understand or at least try to understand people down on their luck.

All this has really done is make a bunch of quacks rich with their bullshit "cures" and "remedies"and divide the "autism community"(for lack of a better term) when these families and individuals need more support not less. Not to mention how damned dangerous not vaccinating is for the community at large.

Secret Cold War tests in St. Louis raise concerns

Doris Spates was a baby when her father died inexplicably in 1955. She has watched four siblings die of cancer, and she survived cervical cancer.

After learning that the Army conducted secret chemical testing in her impoverished St. Louis neighborhood at the height of the Cold War, she wonders if her own government is to blame.

In the mid-1950s, and again a decade later, the Army used motorized blowers atop a low-income housing high-rise, at schools and from the backs of station wagons to send a potentially dangerous compound into the already-hazy air in predominantly black areas of St. Louis.

Local officials were told at the time that the government was testing a smoke screen that could shield St. Louis from aerial observation in case the Russians attacked.

But in 1994, the government said the tests were part of a biological weapons program and St. Louis was chosen because it bore some resemblance to Russian cities that the U.S. might attack. The material being sprayed was zinc cadmium sulfide, a fine fluorescent powder.

Now, new research is raising greater concern about the implications of those tests. St. Louis Community College-Meramec sociology professor Lisa Martino-Taylor's research has raised the possibility that the Army performed radiation testing by mixing radioactive particles with the zinc cadmium sulfide, though she concedes there is no direct proof.

But her report, released late last month, was troubling enough that both U.S. senators from Missouri wrote to Army Secretary John McHugh demanding answers.

Have you seen the show Parenthood? One of the characters on the show is a middle school age boy with Asperger's. The actor playing him isn't autistic,the kid really does a great job giving a realistic portrayal of a kid with AS. I think that one of the first sort of mainstream shows I've seen where autism was given a realistic treatment.

No, I have not. I'm interested now because it's always interesting for me to see how people with Asperger's are portrayed.
