Just discovered how to use the nifty little Linux tool 'jpegtran' to strip all the metadata out of any images you upload to LGF, without changing the image quality at all. jpegtran does a lossless transformation. It can also rotate and flip images in a limited kind of way, but I'm only using it to strip out all the extra JPEG metadata headers which can include stuff like your location, your name, the date you took the picture, etc., depending on the camera you took it with.

Yep, I'm trying to head off the situation where a person doesn't even know the metadata is there, and uploads a photo for a Page.
Would anyone actually want to leave the metadata in there for uploaded files? I could create an option to do that if anyone's interested. Seems like the best default behavior though is to strip it out.

Minority students attacked with ‘bleach bombs’ in Texas
-University of Texas students marched through the streets of West Campus protesting a string of possible hate crimes.
"A bleach-bomb fell and hit me, my roommate; well almost hit us. It barely missed us," student Jaysen Runnels said. "It's very frustrating to know that it's 2012 and that stuff like this still happens."
Not everyone is convinced the incidents having anything to do with race. Some students said the recent reports of balloons full of bleach being thrown from balconies at black, Hispanic and Asian students, are just pranks.
"I have seen it happening for the past three years, all the time," student Sophie Weiner said.
"I see it from my balcony," Pete Desai said. "I think it is just who ever happens to walk by at the time."
"I don’t know. My friend said they had gotten a banana thrown at them and someone said they had a water balloon with bleach thrown at them one time," student Mackenzie Drake.

(fixed), but everybody knows they don't pay that rate. Well, especially the wealthier "job creators." When the candidates say 25%, you can really just translate it into a 10% cut of whatever number they're paying now.
Of course, if you're a company like GE, it's another 10% boost in profit!

No problem.
The U.S. both taxes its corporations less and raises less in revenue from corporate taxes than its foreign competitors:
That pretty much sums it up. A tax rate in this country is virtually meaningless because there are countless ways to lessen that percentage, especially as more and more money becomes involved. When you're a wealthy person or corporation (or the same thing according to Mitt), you can also afford lawyers who will find secret, lucrative, law-avoiding methods to pay less. And when it comes time to defend it, they explain it in some form of Klingon legalese that almost no human can understand.

Romney gains after debate ... with Republicans (Obama with independents)
Yes, it's from the HORRIBLE Daily Kos, so I know KT won't read it. But the rest of you can click through to see the stats from the Reuters/Ipsos post-debate poll.
Barack Obama's favorability among all voters pre-debate - 54/46
Obama's favorability among all voters post-debate - 54/46
Obama's favorability among independents pre-debate - 46/54
Obama's favorability among independents post-debate 54/46
Romney's stats among independents remained unchanged - 44/56 before and after.
Where Romney made up ground was with Republicans, where he went from 85/15 to 90/10.
-----
In other words, despite the fact that he raced to the center and abandoned all his far-right ideas, Romney somehow strengthened his base while doing absolutely nothing for the independents.

Re corporate tax breaks and job creation...
In 2011 corporations enjoyed a tax break called bonus depreciation that was part of the stimulus package signed into law in 2010.
Under bonus depreciation, companies could write off an entire amount of a capital investment made in 2011 instead of having to spread the depreciation out over 7 years or more.
And it worked as intended. Companies used the bonus depreciation to their benefit to pay far less taxes than they would have otherwise. This program contributed to the deficit for 2011. And corporate profits in 2011 were the highest on record, period. The best year ever for corporate profits.
So did all the job creation we were assured actually materialize from the year of bonus depreciation? Ask the GOP and they'll tell you hells no!
SO clearly their answer to lack of job creation is lower taxes still. If the medicine doesn't work, increase the dosage!

Well you know, Obama didn't create a "business friendly" environment and interfered in the "free market," preventing it from recovering properly. But with a Republican in the White House, we can be sure that the "free market" will get over its "uncertainty" and start adding all sorts of jobs again.

Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin on Thursday released a decade's worth of federal financial reports he has updated with nearly $130,000 in state pension income that he received, but failed to disclose, over that time.
"This was an unintentional oversight and I regret any inconvenience this may cause," the Missouri congressman wrote in a letter dated Tuesday to the chairman of the House Ethics Committee.

I looked at the actual poll, the stats you list are there. But although they say they viewed Mitt more favorably after the debate, those numbers didn't translate over when they were asked HOW they view Mitt Romney. In the end, those numbers stayed almost exactly the same.
In other words, people said they viewed him more favorably afterwards, but only enough for those people to view him as "leaning unfavorable" as opposed to "somewhat unfavorable."
In the end, his unfavorables stayed the same. The only thing that changed was the intensity with which people view him that way.

I didn't say that very eloquently or succinctly. Let me try it again, in a simpler fashion:

Maine GOP attacks Democratic candidate for playing World of Warcraft
The Republican Party of Maine is sending out mailers warning that Democratic state Senate candidate Colleen Lachowicz is a high-level Orc Assassin.
The mailers highlight Lachowicz’s online comments regarding her character in the massive online multiplayer game World of Warcraft, claiming she gets away with “crude, vicious and violent comments” in her online fantasy world. The Maine GOP also created a website, colleensworld.com, which showcases many of her comments about the popular role-playing game.
“So I’m a level 68 orc rogue girl. That means I stab things… a lot. Who would have thought that a peace-lovin’, social worker and democrat would enjoy that,” Lachowicz is quoted as saying in one of the GOP mailers. In another GOP mailer, Lachowicz says that she loves “poisoning and stabbing.”

Getting wide play on the internet today:
Why Reality TV Doesn’t Suck, and May Even Make Us Smarter
It’s easy to assume reality TV is the place where bad TV went to hide when the rest of TV got a lot better. Like that old Wild West town where criminals congregate, reality TV is often perceived as the last, “vast wasteland”: uncouth, desperate, lawless.
But while some shows seem irredeemably bad (Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, anyone?), others offer an indication of good things to come. In fact, by turning all of us into virtual anthropologists, reality TV may lead to the improvement – dare I say it – of Western civilization. Reality TV may even be the next stage in the evolution of television.
[...]
Strange, really strange. Then later he writes:
To be sure, there are some people so emotionally stunted or disappointed by life they treasure the humiliations inflicted by reality TV, but the rest of us are learning. [...] Scores of websites analyze and dissect [participants'] every move, [...] That’s when anthropology doesn’t just tell us, but shows us how to act and think and grow. Reality TV forces revelation.
A key feature of anthropology is the long, observational, “ethnographic” interview. Anthropologists believe one of the advantages of this method is that no one can manage appearances, let alone lie, successfully for a long period of time.
Hmmm...
Politicians have had their moves publicly discussed, dissected, and evaluated, over and over all during their careers. And they lie all during their careers, yet rarely is that actually a factor in what happens to them.

Is this Obamacare fallout?
Deep cuts to Louisiana's public hospitals will affect uninsured patients
Louisiana’s public hospital safety net will have to cut back dramatically the services it offers to uninsured patients across the state under a plan approved Thursday by the LSU Board of Supervisors. In New Orleans, a $49 million reduction at the Interim LSU Public Hospital will mean that 432 workers lose their jobs, while the number of patient beds will shrink from 201 to 155. Some clinics associated with the hospital will close, while others will reduce their hours.
[...]
The reductions were brought on by a decrease in federal Medicaid funding for Louisiana this summer. The initial budget slashing began months ago, but when Opelka took over leadership of the system in September, he re-evaluated the existing plan and said he would need to cut deeper.
[...]
“It is a question of who dies and who lives. Where are these people going to go?” asked Sen. Ben Nevers, D-Bogalusa. “I am asking you who is going to provide the services? Until you tell me that, I am not going to be able to.”

Oh yeah. This.
Dodd-Frank was passed. And it includes within it a number of provisions that I think has some unintended consequences that are harmful to the economy. One is it designates a number of banks as too big to fail, and they're effectively guaranteed by the federal government. This is the biggest kiss that's been given to -- to New York banks I've ever seen. This is an enormous boon for them. There've been 122 community and small banks have closed since Dodd- Frank.
-- Mitt Romney 10/3/2012
But look at this!
Romney Wrongly Connects Dodd-Frank Rule to Small Bank Failures
Oct. 4 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney made competing assertions in their debate last night in Denver. How did they square with the facts?
Bank Bailouts
The Claim: Mitt Romney said the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 designated five U.S. banks as too big to fail and gave them “a blank check,” contributing to the collapse of smaller banks. “We need to get rid of that provision because it’s killing regional and small banks,” he said, asserting it has contributed to the closing of 122 community banks.
The Background: The Dodd-Frank financial overhaul was enacted in July of 2010 to impose regulation on some of the riskiest practices that contributed to the financial meltdown. One provision created a protocol under which the largest, most complex financial institutions would be wound down safely, without lasting taxpayer burden, should they fail. Nine banks -- including five of the largest U.S. banks -- have submitted so- called “living wills” to U.S. banking regulators to map out how they would be dismantled under bankruptcy. If their bankruptcies threatened the financial system, Dodd-Frank gave the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. authority to liquidate them itself.
The Facts: Romney was off base. There is no connection between the failure of community banks and the provision in Dodd-Frank designed to contain the harm from the failure of a big bank. FDIC statistics show that 37 banks, not five, have enough assets to come under that provision.
Continues.
Pants on fire.

The thing about the PBS and NPR bruhaha that seems to happen ever election cycle is that they get such a small percentage of their operating budget from the government. Those who take advantage of the programming can usually afford to donate more during the "subscription drives".
Not the group that really needs for the government to provide good programming.
I wish there were a way to get more people to watch. So much better food for the brain than reality TV.
I heard an editorial about it on NPR a while back. A guy said that the listenership was exactly the demographic that didn't need tax subsidies.
Either way, its seems like a stupid argument to me. Not enough of a percentage to waste bandwith when there are so many other line items in the budget that can be argued over.

ROMNEY: "What would I cut from spending? Well, first of all, I will eliminate all programs by this test, if they pass it: Is the program so critical it's worth borrowing money from China to pay for it?"
THE FACTS: China continues to be portrayed by Romney and many other Republicans as the poster child for runaway federal deficits. It's true that China is the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt, but it only represents about an 8 percent stake. And China has recently been decreasing its holdings, according to the Treasury Department. Some two-thirds of the $16 trillion national debt is owed to the federal government, with the largest single stake the Federal Reserve, as well as American investors and the Social Security Trust Fund.
8 percent.

Romney: 'Victory is in sight' after first debate
DENVER (AP) — Buoyed by a powerful debate showing, Mitt Romney said Thursday he offers "prosperity that comes through freedom" to a country struggling to shed a weak economy. President Barack Obama accused the former Massachusetts governor of running from his own record in pursuit of political power.

"Alpha male" is a great excuse for selfish, male-privilege behavior that has little or nothing to do with the animal-society role of an alpha and/or being a bully, braggart and liar. It's Ayn Rand with evolutionary psych.

It did give some new insight into why a lot of people with no apparent reason to benefit are still supporting Romneydaddy.
R-Money improved his standing with Republicans because their is nothing they like more than an asshole, but he didn't win over or take away any voters from Obama and that's all that matters.
Let him basked in the afterglow, he'll be itching in all of the wrong places soon enough.

Study Measures Romney Plan to Screw Poor, Sick
Commonwealth Fund has released a report comparing the stark choice. Estimating conservatively, Romney’s plan — to the extent that the report was able to piece it together — would increase the uninsured population to about 72 million, while Obama’s would cut it to 26 million (his plan does not cover illegal immigrants.)

Romney’s Clean Energy WhoppersMitt Romney made numerous bogus claims in the Oct. 3 debate about the $90 billion in grants, guaranteed loans and tax breaks for energy projects in the stimulus bill:
Romney falsely claimed “about half” of the clean-energy companies that received U.S.-backed loans “have gone out of business.” But 26 companies received loan guarantees under a loan program cited by Romney, and three of those have filed for bankruptcy. The three firms were approved for about 6 percent of the loan guarantees.
Romney incorrectly claimed the “$90 billion in breaks to the green energy world” was provided “in one year.” It was two.
He stated at one point that Obama put $90 billion “into solar and wind.” But only $21 billion went for renewable energy projects, “such as the installation of wind turbines and solar panels,” according to a White House document cited by the Romney campaign. The spending also included $18 billion for transit projects and $10 billion to upgrade the nation’s electrical grid.
He falsely claimed the $90 billion was equal to “about 50 years’ worth of what oil and gas receives” in tax breaks, which he estimated at $2.8 billion. By his own figures, it would have been 32 years’ worth. But it’s even less than that. The administration estimates that eliminating oil and gas tax preferences would raise about $3.9 billion a year (23 years’ worth). The industry itself says the administration would increase its taxes by $8.5 billion a year (10.5 years’ worth).
He falsely claimed Obama “put $90 billion into green jobs … that would have hired 2 million teachers.” But that $90 billion included loan guarantees, not just grant money, and the government can’t hire teachers with loan guarantees.

I told you lizards! I've said it for months and nobody believed me!
I'm not a pundit or poly-sci major. But I've said clearly. Nothing before or really else matters till the debates.. Before nothing was but spin and shit on both sides.. He have now hit the hot LZ in this vision for America we face.
My humble citizen points.
1. Only today, now that you have American's attention don't just call Mitt a liar. Focus on Math and Policy.
2. Tell Big bird to just shut the hell up about Tax returns..That is so yesterday don't tweet or get involved in the middle of a knife fight..Otherwise you'll end up on the Cartoon network next year. I promise you if you don't tread carefully the GOP will do that to you. I freaking promise you they will..
3. I posted earlier that most likely Obama would take the GOP's best shot in round one. Obama knows this..He knows sports. If any pundit thought the game was over with the Lakes down by 10 in the first quarter or our football team down by 7 in the 2nd quarter that the game was lost. You'd laugh them out of the house.
This has just begun.

One of my students from China is now studying at Kent State. Obama made an appearance there a few days ago, and she said she doesn't like Obama because of his stance on China. I pointed out that Romney's stance would be even worse, without getting into specifics.
The Repubs want to demonize China, as if it is China's fault that Americans are having such a hard time. The truth of the matter is lower labor costs will naturally attract businesses to go offshore, unless there are some domestic factors to compensate for the move.
So, US mfrs built their stuff (like KitchenAid mixers) offshore to save on costs, and then find they can sell their stuff for less and still make profits. Americans get used to paying less for products, and now everyone is hooked.
Meanwhile, China's banks had to operate under very strict guidelines, so they were not dragged under by the mortgage crisis that began, IIRC, in the go-go financial markets of the USA. Result: China's economy was booming (it's slowed down recently) while America's almost went bust.
