Josh Romney: Dad “Learned How to Debate an Obstinate Child”

That’s not a dog whistle, it’s an air horn
Politics • Views: 38,151

Here’s Mitt Romney’s son Josh, doubling down on his father’s bizarre debate story about his lying “boys,” and comparing the President of the United States to “an obstinate child.”

As always with a right wing dog whistle, plausible deniability is maintained because he doesn’t explicitly say Obama is an obstinate child.

So it's not just Mitt who's a pathetic jerk in this family. Really comparing the POTUS to a child? Shows the lack of class that Romney has and that he raised his sons with.

Yikes. Yep, more dog whistles from the Romney family. Lovely. I'm totally convinced that if Mitt had been a candidate in the 60's, he would have adopted George Wallace rhetoric if he thought it would help him.

To paraphrase H.L. Mencken (?), I think Mitt would cheerfully endorse incest, cannibalism, or human sacrifice if he thought it would help him win.

That seems to indicate he's shifting people from PA to OH, where voting is already underway, but in both cases, Obama/Democratic GOTV is much larger than Romney/GOP GOTV efforts.

Size/reach still matters.

Between the campaign and the national party, there are 24 offices in Pennsylvania, and 40 in Ohio.

By contrast, President Obama's campaign has 45 offices in Pennsylvania, and 120 in Ohio.

An Obama win in both states would make Romney's path to the WH all the more difficult.

By the way, I think it's extremely weird that the Romney family is actually bragging about being relentless liars.

There's an excellent book called The Cheating Culture: Why more Americans are doing wrong to get ahead.

In a nutshell, the book makes the argument that our society is set up so that people are encouraged to NOT play by the rules to get ahead, either because the chance of being caught it so low or because the potential benefit is so high.

The book addresses things like cheating on taxes, students getting ADD medication under false pretense so they can perform better on tests, people lying on resumes, youth sports leagues fudging documentation to make older players appear younger and so on and so forth.

Unfortunately, the central argument of the book has merit: One can often become more successful through breaking the rules rather than playing by them (As a recent example, look at the way the big banks made boatloads of money before the bust by throwing the mortgage rulebook away and lending to practically anyone who had a pulse).

One person in the Mountain time zone scheduled the interviews. Another person in the Eastern time zone would call to do the interviews. Nothing was done in person.

The first interview I went through was nothing but two roleplay scenarios that took almost an hour. The first scenario was a cold prospect of a new business executive in your area, and you have to close the deal with a commitment to use Wells Fargo services at the end. The second scenario was trying to convince an unhappy client whose portfolio lost money based on your investment advice to stay with Wells Fargo. There was also a secondary objective of getting them to invest more money in order to take advantage of a downturn in an investment.

We never talked about my skills or what I could bring to the table or anything else. It was pretty much just those two scenes. I guess the second interview would have been more personal, but I'll never know. *shrug*

87 darthstar  Tue, Oct 9, 2012 12:53:43pm

TNR Rips Romney a new asshole

Officially, Romney has been running for president since June, 2011. Unofficially, he’s been running for a lot longer than that. During that time he made quite a few policy commitments, although surprisingly few people seem to remember or have noticed all of them.

He said he would cap federal spending at 20 percent of gross domestic product, setting aside 4 percent of GDP for defense spending. Such a limit would force draconian, virtually unthinkable cuts to programs like food inspections, public housing, air traffic control: Pretty much anything, and quite possibly everything, the federal government does besides defense and Social Security would be subject to serious funding cuts. Romney also vowed to repeal Obamacare and to end Medicaid as we know it. In its place, he proposed a tax deduction and a scaled-down insurance program for the poor that would, at best, cover only a fraction of the same people. According to independent and non-partisan estimates, tens of millions of Americans would lose health insurance. Among them would be the poorest and sickest people in America, depending on how states dealt with the funding cuts.

Ugh, I hate phone interviews. I like to be able to see who I'm talking to.

I'm with you on the role plays, they are seldom very effective or educational the way most big companies do them.

Sadly, for more and more jobs, quality training has gone the way of the dodo.

More on the 14 year old girl that was almost assassinated by the Taliban:

...The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying Ms. Yousafzai had been targeted for her criticism of the Taliban and because it considered her human rights campaigning to be an “obscenity.”

“She has become a symbol of Western culture in the area; she was openly propagating it,” a Taliban spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, said by phone from an undisclosed location. “She considers Obama as her ideal leader.”

The Taliban publicly placed Ms. Yousafzai on its assassination hit list this spring. Mr. Ehsan added that if she survived, the militants would try to kill her again. “Let this be a lesson,” he said. ..

There's an excellent book called The Cheating Culture: Why more Americans are doing wrong to get ahead.

In a nutshell, the book makes the argument that our society is set up so that people are encouraged to NOT play by the rules to get ahead, either because the chance of being caught it so low or because the potential benefit is so high.recent example, look at the way the big banks made boatloads of money before the bust by throwing the mortgage rulebook away and lending to practically anyone who had a pulse).

Yep, I still remember the first time I heard a basketball ref say, "That was an effective use of a foul," and I realized that rule-breaking was now encouraged.

Ugh, I hate phone interviews. I like to be able to see who I'm talking to.

I'm with you on the role plays, they are seldom very effective or educational the way most big companies do them.

Sadly, for more and more jobs, quality training has gone the way of the dodo.

Funny thing is, the job I just accepted was a position I applied for through LinkedIn and my first two interviews were done by phone. They just happened to go really well because I meshed with both my then future boss and with the COO of the company when we spoke. The last interview was in person, and that's where I clinched it.

It wasn't so much the phone interview thing that killed it for me with Wells Fargo, it's the fact that the interview had nothing to do with me personally or what I could bring to the company. It was just these dumb, arbitrary roleplay scenarios. Blah.

And from your revel of what they asked it sounds like it was "call to sell more" or "soothe and then sell more". Nothing about what you might be able to do to make things better for the client. But I guess that is what business is all about now, as they call it in McDonalds counter terms "suggestive selling".

What's irritating about the Romney brood bascially calling Obama an "obstinate child"* is that these jackasses have had the same amount of hardships in their life as their dad: basically zero.

It's no so much the ad hominen attacks as it is the people delivering them.** It's really galling to watch children of privilege describe someone who has worked their up from nothing as "lazy".

Was George Romney as big a doucebag as his kids and grandkids seem to be?

* To the few conservatives who might read this: Josh Romney compared Obama to an obstinate child. Save your fucking breath with any "he didn't use that exact phrasing" horseshit.

** The attack is very much a not-so-subtle racial dig. For this post I'm focusing on the "rich kid calling a self-made man lazy" insult.

EDIT: added "as their dad" to first paragraph.

Did the CIA Have a Double Agent Inside al Qaeda?

A Danish man claims he worked with the CIA to infiltrate al Qaeda as a double agent for years and helped track radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki until the prominent al Qaeda figure was killed in an American drone strike, according to a Danish news report.

The man, who calls himself Morten Storm, provided evidence to the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten that he was a former radical who had been turned by the Danish intelligence service (PET) and later worked with the CIA so closely that he says President Obama knew his name. Storm said he was the one who sent Anwar al-Awlaki, the al Qaeda preacher linked to several American terror plots, a USB stick that contained a tracking device that eventually allowed an American drone to take him out in September 2011.

The ‘Facts’ According to Obama and Romney Ads

In dueling ads, the Obama and Romney campaigns claim the factual high ground on deficits and taxes while, ironically, distorting the facts.

An Obama ad uses a truncated quote that makes NBC’s Andrea Mitchell seem to contradict Romney’s statement that his tax plan doesn’t amount to a $5 trillion cut. In fact, she went on to say Romney “said again tonight that his plan would be paid for.”
A Romney ad claims Obama is “adding almost as much debt as all 43 previous presidents combined.” It’s true that debt held by the public is up 79 percent since Obama took office, but that’s not all his fault. As we’ve often noted, the fiscal 2009 deficit was already running at an officially projected $1.2 trillion before he was sworn in.

It has been our experience at FactCheck.org that when a political campaign touts that it is providing “facts,” it’s wise to proceed with skepticism. These two competing ads from the Obama and Romney campaigns, both released after the first presidential debate, prove our point.

Well, I'm sure the Obama campaign was hoping to get some free media out of it which is exactly what happened. I do agree it plays mostly to the base and won't have much impact directly. The Romney campaign and its surrogates can either ignore it, or play it as "Obama's so desperate he's focusing on Big Bird instead of the economy." My guess is the campaign will do the former, conservative talking heads the latter.

Yeah, that's pretty alarmist. The mid-term impact on the Presidential race is still undetermined, let alone downticket races. A few places aside, the congressional race is shaping up fairly close to expectations, though I'm sure Republicans thought they'd be in better shape in the senate race right now.

Elections board warns about confusing mailers

MADISON, Wis. -

Wisconsin election officials are warning voters to be cautious about slick mailings giving misleading or incorrect information about voter registration and absentee voting.

The Government Accountability Board said in a release Monday that it and local election officials around the state have been receiving an increasing number of questions and complaints and recent mailings that contain errors that could interfere with voting.

One of the mailings in question from the Republican Party of Wisconsin incorrectly told residents in the heavily Democratic areas of Madison and Dane County to return voter registration applications to the town of Albion, even if they did not live there.

Board director Kevin Kennedy recommends that voters rely on information from their local municipal clerk's office or the Myvote.wi.gov website.

In-person early voting begins Oct. 22.

Welch can't take the heat: I quit
By Stephen Gandel, senior editor October 9, 2012: 12:43 PM ET
The former top GE executive says he will no longer write for Fortune following coverage of his jobs conspiracy tweet.

FORTUNE -- Jack Welch has left our building, metaphorically that is.

Welch said he will no longer contribute to Fortune following critical coverage of the former CEO of General Electric, saying he would get better "traction" elsewhere. On Friday, Welch suggested that the Obama administration, calling them "these Chicago guys," had manipulated the monthly jobs report in order to make the economy look better than it actually is just weeks before the election. Welch has been battered by criticism since making the suggestion on Twitter...

Oh, yeah -- that last one had a rather large image in it, that's why. The embedded tweet is inserted by Twitter's code, and unfortunately they don't give me any way to know when it's finished. It's not uncommon for fast-paced companies to trim the lowest performing x% every year as a matter of policy. Most of the big consultancies do it, for example. Lots of people in those companies love the policy because it ensures they're not working with chronic underachievers.

re: #246 The Mongoose

It's a really stupid idea for a large number of reasons. Chief among those reasons is the difficult of measuring performance. With something reasonably bullshit like a consultancy it might work, but not at any company trying to actually do something. But there's lots of other reasons too. Someone might get stuck in that lowest x% due to the failures of others, and you wind up throwing them out. Other people may coast by on the success of others. Unless you've got absolutely individual workers competing in some level playing field, it's a crap idea.

And people who really love the idea probably are the ones who know how to game the system.

it's not uncommon for workers who have the luxury of choice, like technical workers, to try to detect companies like this and avoid applying for jobs there. there's a website called 'glassdoor' that helps a lot with this...

wise companies that don't want to waste money are more concerned about careful hiring, fitting the employee to the job, and training. hiring and firing are expensive, so unless the company has a lot of extra money to burn, it behooves the managers to weigh the cost/benefit for any firing

re: #259 Gus

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” the Republican presidential nominee told The Des Moines Register in an interview.

And then there's this:

Following is Governor Mitt Romney's message informing the Legislature that he vetoed the emergency contraception bill.

"To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives:
"... To those who believe that life begins at conception, the morning-after pill can destroy the human life that was created at the moment of fertilization.
"Furthermore, this legislation would make the morning-after pill available to young girls without any restrictions on age... this bill undermines the state's parental consent laws and represents a departure from the public consensus that minor children should not act without parental involvement in these matters."

And:

We should overturn Roe v. Wade and return these issues to the states,"I would welcome a circumstance where there was such a consensus in this country where we said we don't want to have abortions in this country at all. Period. That would be wonderful. I'd be delighted to sign that bill, but that's not where we are. That's not where America is today. Where America is today is ready to overturn Roe v. Wade and return to the states that authority. But if the Congress got there, we had that kind of consensus in the country, terrific.

So he vetoed a bill to expand contraception solely because it would terminate embryos extremely close to conception-- in other words, far before the 'viability' test of Roe vs. Wade, and he wants Roe vs Wade overturned, and, while he then says he wants it returned to the states, he wants eventually all abortion to be banned.

He's using the weasel tactic here of talking about not knowing of any specific legislation-- who gives a shit.

So, they give a "Pants on Fire" to "Romney is going to fire Big Bird"....because really, he just wants to cut all funding to PBS, which doesn't technically fire anyone...until they realize they can't afford to pay them.

But if Obama says Romney is going to cut $5 trillion in taxes.....which Romney said he would do only about 1,000 times on the campaign trail......it's only "Half true" or "mostly true."

Our Ruling

In its latest attempt to portray Romney as heartless, the Obama campaign is making a serious allegation that he wants to put one of America's most beloved children's characters in the unemployment line.

Romney has been clear that his plan for PBS is not specific to Big Bird (nor to Jim Lehrer for that matter). He simply wants to end federal subsidies.

It's a ridiculous stretch to equate that with firing the 8-foot-2 yellow bird. Just as Democrats have scared senior citizens about losing Medicare, they are now scaring preschoolers about losing Big Bird. Pants on Fire!

I'm on the fence about this one. Politifact also rated Obama's sarcastic comment about Mitt considering Trump a "small business" as false. It was clear that Obama was being snarky. However, we see a lot of stuff like "you didn't build that", Mitt doesn't understand airplane windows, "bump in the road", Mit doesn;t think the troops are important etc that's clearly used by partisans as an exaggeration to make a point. But the problem is that a lot of people take these things literally so I guess I can see Politifact's tactic as treating these things as serious claims. It does seem humorless but I think that's the strategy,

Chief justice candidate Roy Moore hits on hot-button issues

Republican chief justice candidate Roy Moore said America is experiencing moral decay because some leaders embrace abortion, same-sex marriage and other issues damaging to families.

"We're suffering economic and politically because we've suffered moral decay in the country," he said Tuesday.

Moore was one of the speakers at a rally on the Capitol steps organized by several ministers concerned about President Barack Obama's views on same-sex marriage and abortion.

One of the organizers, Gil Melendez, director of the Montgomery House of Prayer, said the event was not about Alabama being a red state or blue state. "We're asking for a God state," he said.

Technically, isn't a "God state" called a "Theocracy"?

Yo, Mitt, Borrowing Money From China Is Good for America, Not Bad

"...China is an easy bogeyman for U.S. politicians, because it's an ocean away and it's still run by the Communist Party. But the economic threat posed by China is routinely exaggerated. Investors in China do hold about $1.2 trillion in U.S. government debt, but that's only about 7.3 percent of all U.S. debt, and 10.3 percent of debt held by the public. (Government agencies such as the Federal Reserve hold about $5 trillion of America's $16 trillion in total debt.) Japan holds nearly as much U.S. debt as China does, but nobody ever complains about Americans being in hock to the Japanese.

The size of America's national debt is itself a problem, because Washington depends on borrowed money for too much of its everyday expenditures. But that's the borrower's fault, not the lender's. "The whole thing is silly," says Boudreaux. "Blaming the Chinese lets the people creating the debt off the hook. And that's Congress."

Mitt knows all this, he's just a liar pandering to the ignorance of his base.

I think it's a mistake for Obama's campaign to follow up his weak debate performance with this Big Bird stuff. It's silly and I'm not interested in it. If swing voters find it persuasive then fine, but I'm not impressed by it.

You're either totally dishonest or just have a total inability to see things for what they represent.

If Team Obama had put out an add saying "When asked about trying to reduce the deficit, candidate Romney said one his first cuts would be PBS funding from the federal budget. PBS is .0001% (or whatever it is, I'm not digging it up) and provides quality education to children in America. Romney, wrong on the budget, wrong on education, wrong for America."

If that had been the advertisement, would you be happy?

How is Mitt Romney going to pay for tax his cuts?

1. Either he will back off from his campaign promise and not cut taxes 20%
2. or He will proceed & blow a hole in the deficit
3. or He will raise taxes by cutting loopholes on things like mortgage deductions, which will raise taxes on the middle class.

I dont see a 4th way.

He wont say how he is going to do it.

He lied about pre-existing condition coverage.

Big Bird was the only thing he said that anyone can point to as a specific proposal.

‘These People Make Me Sick’
By ANDREW ROSENTHAL

Lawrence Wilkerson, who should know an irresponsible neo-con when he sees, dished out heavy criticism of Mitt Romney’s foreign policy team yesterday. He said, “These people make me sick.”

Mr. Wilkerson, a retired Army colonel who served as chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell–i.e. under President George W. Bush–was particularly critical of John Bolton, the arch hawk who rather famously trashed the United Nations before Mr. Bush made him U.N. Ambassador.

“The man scares me to death,” Mr. Wilkerson said. “He would defeat all the enemies in America and the world—and believe me they’re plentiful—and he’d do it with everyone else’s blood. John is like Dick Cheney, never served a day in his life and wouldn’t serve a day in his life.”

I’m not so eager to criticize people for not having served in the military – since I never did and since the whole point of the American approach to the military is that it’s run by civilians. But I share Mr. Wilkerson’s concerns about Mr. Bolton and the rest of the Romney foreign policy advisory team...

Can almost guarantee Romney is going to go hardline on 'right to life' right up until the next debate, and then BANG! he's going to veer so hard to pro-choice Obama wonder if Mitt is actually 2 different twins. Which would actually make sense. There's either Willard and Mitt, or there's 2 people in Mitt's head.

re: #309 Killgore Trout

Kind of, not sure yet. Here's their closing....

I'm on the fence about this one. Politifact also rated Obama's sarcastic comment about Mitt considering Trump a "small business" as false.

They did so by not once considering Mitt's definition of a small business. They rated the claim purely on whether Trump would currently qualify for an SBA loan, which has nothing to do with Obama's claim. This is how Politifact creates "context," by dishonestly judging their own erroneous inference rather than the actual statement made.

Sheriff Dever legally drunk at time of deadly crash

The Cochise County sheriff who lost control of his vehicle in northern Arizona and died was legally drunk at the time, an autopsy report shows.

Larry Dever’s blood-alcohol content was .29 — more than three times the state’s legal limit, the report released Monday indicates .

Dever had been driving along a gravel road near Williams on Sept. 18 to meet family members for a camping and hunting trip when his pickup rolled. His speed was marked at 62 mph, but the road doesn’t have a speed limit.

The autopsy report also showed that Dever’s seat belt wasn’t buckled, and authorities noted he had beer and liquor in his vehicle.

New Mexico Attorney General makes a statement:

(SANTA FE)---Recent reports of poll-challenger training in Sandoval County have prompted a full investigation by Attorney General Gary King who is simultaneously exploring available sanctions against those found guilty of voter suppression tactics.

“I will not tolerate voter suppression efforts by anyone, period,” says AG King. “We have received a number of complaints since last Friday that there seems to be a concerted effort afoot to discourage some New Mexicans from exercising their right to vote this November. My office is committed to helping ensure fair elections by working to put an immediate stop to such misinformation and publicly correcting what has already been disseminated.”

By definition, voter suppression is any attempt to influence elections by discouraging or actually preventing people from going to the polls. Last week a Sandoval County GOP official reportedly told trainees, among other false information, that they could ask voters to present identification in order to vote. New Mexico law does not require ID to vote.

“It’s against New Mexico law to check for ID,” New Mexico Congressman Steve Pearce told a Denver, Colorado reporter last week.

AG King is calling upon Governor Susana Martinez and NM Secretary of State Dianna Duran to join him in repudiating voter suppression tactics and to work together to ensure fair elections in New Mexico.

Paul Ryan: ‘Inner City’ People Need To Be Taught ‘Good Discipline, Good Character’

"...What you don’t often hear spoken (out loud, anyway) is that the real problem with gun violence in America is the “character” and “discipline” of people in the “inner cities,” a very specific delineation from other city folk. Obviously, if you shoot someone to death, there’s a good chance you have a major character flaw or two, but what about all the “inner city” people who are doing the dying? Did they lack the “character” or “discipline” to dodge a bullet? Are rural or suburban murderers and victims more virtuous?

Apparently so. Apparently, crime in our cities has nothing to do with poverty, and systemic failures, fueled by generations of institutionalized racism, but with the character of those people. So says Paul Ryan, and so says Mitt Romney. If you’re poor, it’s because your culture is inferior."

At the next Presidential debate Obama should just open with every statement of Romney's that his campaign has had to immediately walk back. Start with the lie about Romney's health plan covering pre-existing conditions and go from there. Then talk about how Romney wants to get us into more foreign conflicts, raise military spending to keep us in Afghanistan indefinitely and invade Iran. He should strongly insinuate that Romney is a sociopath, drunk on the prospect of power, who will lie with every breath, who will destroy our rebuilt reputation in the eyes of the world and who gets off sexually on the idea of sending soldiers to be killed in unnecessarily foreign conflicts.

Ok that last bit might a tad over the line for a debate ...

Romney came in, not to debate, but to put on a performance, a dog and pony show for the base. He gave them exactly what they wanted.

Weird, that's the previous post's video, though if something opens multiple tabs and starts targeting hard drives, I'd be worried about mal-ware or other things.

Whatever it is, I'll have to deal with it tomorrow. Microsoft Security Essentials says I'm "up to date and protected", but I know that doesn't necessarily mean it is so.

Later, lizards.

I didn't intend to mean on your end, Charles. Websites loading slowly and being a little dysfunctional is one thing, weblinks opening multiple tabs at random and files in the TEMP folder (where a good deal of mal-ware seems to get in) tends to be user-side, and makes me a little jumpy after a case of ID Theft.

You are in the minority.

Why has Romney's campaign had to walk back so many of his statements? Obama's campaign doesn't have to do that, because he's not the one deliberately spewing lies and deceptive half truths. Romney's campaign is constantly telling people to ignore that thing that their candidate just said because it doesn't represent his true position on that issue. There's something pathologically wrong when that keeps happening, again and again. It says something pretty pathetic about one's supporters that they're constantly willing to gloss over, ignore, or even cheer on such blatant displays of mendacity.

Not enough with Iran. I'm with Netanyahu on that score: The US and Israel need to set a clear 'red line' along the path Iran would need to take to build a nuke. The logical point would be enriching mid-grade enriched uranium to highly-enriched uranium. What I think should be done is to openly warn Iran that if it attempts to produce highly enriched uranium any facility producing or storing said grade of uranium will be destroyed without further warning.

And then what? What's your follow-up?

The Suffolk U pollster said he's not going to poll Florida, Virginia, or North Carolina anymore because they're no chance Obama could possibly win there.

And even Erick Erickson is laughing at him.

Didn't DF already say that a few months ago? Preemptive nukes. That's his follow up.

re: #540 Dark_Falcon

Not enough with Iran. I'm with Netanyahu on that score: The US and Israel need to set a clear 'red line' along the path Iran would need to take to build a nuke. The logical point would be enriching mid-grade enriched uranium to highly-enriched uranium. What I think should be done is to openly warn Iran that if it attempts to produce highly enriched uranium any facility producing or storing said grade of uranium will be destroyed without further warning.

I think we should reinstitute the draft for all registered Republican males; train them for 6 months; then invade Iran.

Nukes shouldn't be needed. We've got new earth penetrator bombs that can deal with the facilities conventionally. The only way I had considered using a nuke was if we were dealing with a target which could not possibly be neutralized by conventional aerial means (any target can be taken out with a large enough ground assault, but that option is not one I'd support).

If they cross the red line, then the facilities enriching uranium to high grade would be destroyed without warning. We carry out the threat, in other words.

And then what? Seriously, does it not occur to you that A) you might not get everything in one attack and B) you're just gonna lend credibility to those pushing for such weapons in the first place?

So we bomb Iran.....to keep them from getting nukes...... then they attack Israel in retaliation....... then we're in another war. Fantastic.

If they begin high-grade enrichment, "those pushing for such weapons in the first place" will have already gotten the upper hand in Iran. At that point, i would argue the hope that saner head prevail in Iran would be outweighed by the likelihood that they will not. In such a case, military action is the only remaining option.

You're still going to create a radiological disaster. Uranium is pyrophoric, bombing a fueled facility is going to cause fires and spread radioactive particulates all over the Middle East.

That should go over well.

And in six months? A year? 2? I don't think you understand that once you've bombed the bejesus out of them, saying "If you do that again, I'm going to come back" is not a warning, it's a challenge.

Better that than a city or two gets slagged by Iranian nukes.

I don't want to bomb such facilities. but it seems to me the least-worst option.

Been investigating these problems a lot today - bottom line, the Windows version of Firefox is buggy. Every other browser on both Mac and PC -- and Firefox on the Mac! -- works fine with the fancybox image popup code.

Still looking into it, but I don't have a work-around yet.

And whatever the bug is it came in with FF 15 or so. I was using an older FF version up to this past weekend and was not having that issue.

It's definitely true...most polls showed large majorities or pluralities of debate-watchers thought Mr. Romney had the better performance. It's a matter of opinion; no one's "right", no one's "wrong". It's perfectly valid to have one's own set of criteria for what constitutes a good debate performance.

This is the part I don't get in terms of the opposition to hitting Iran if needed. We don't want diplomacy to fail, we want sanctions to work, we want Iran to stop pursuing the bomb. But if they don't, would those who oppose any military action actually be OK with Iran pointing nuclear missiles at civilians across the region? Is this really an acceptable outcome?

Edit to add: That's not even the worst-case scenario. The real nightmare isn't Iran holding onto a nuclear warhead...it's Iran selling one to a non-state group that won't be worried about retaliation when they detonate it in London.

Our standards for Presidential debates are much lower than our standards for high school debates. Since Presidential debates are so much more important, shouldn't the standards for high school debates be lowered even further? I say if you show up wearing a cape and hood and respond "I'm Batman!" to every question while posing heroically, you should beat the kid in the suit and tie with all his stupid pedantic facts and logic.

re: #447 Tigger2005

Actually, watching the debate, I got more an impression that Romney was the lying, obstinate child, and Obama was the sober adult, utterly taken aback by the mendacious youngster's audacity.

Romney came in, not to debate, but to put on a performance, a dog and pony show for the base. He gave them exactly what they wanted.

The problem is, that argument is equally damning.

Obama and his team have now been watching Fox for four years. They were there during the midterm elections. They've watched each back and forth of this in real time. That's their jobs.

Romney was no more "mendacious" than usual. He wasn't even any more "mendacious" than any other of Obama's opponents. Hell, a good chunk still haven't even accepted his birth certificate.

There's no way to argue he was "surprised" or "taken aback" by the other side's fast and loose record with the truth. If that's true, then he's too dumb to be President.

It's a whiff any last way you slice it, and I'm a supporter.
