Romney Introduced Glenn Beck as a ‘Statesman’ at Law School Founded by Far Right Crank W. Cleon Skousen

Romney studied under Skousen at Brigham Young

Mother Jones has released another potentially damning video, featuring Mitt Romney introducing Glenn Beck at a 2009 fundraiser for George Wythe University in Utah, founded by followers of far right crank W. Cleon Skousen.

Among the superlatives he peppered his introduction of Beck with was the word “statesman.”

In 2009, Mitt Romney, who is now trying to campaign for president as a moderate, lent his star power to an unusual charitable project: celebrating right-wing talk show host Glenn Beck to raise money for an unaccredited Utah-based college, which was founded by acolytes of the late W. Cleon Skousen and promoted the work of this fringe conservative figure. Much-touted by Beck, Skousen was an anti-communist crusader, a purported political philosopher, a historian accused of racist revisionism, and a right-wing conspiracy theorist. He contended that the Founding Fathers were direct descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel, claimed that a global cabal of bankers controlled the world from behind the scenes, and wrote a book that referred to the “blessings of slavery.” Skousen, who died in 2006, taught Romney at Brigham Young University. (my emphasis)

On May 30, 2009, George Wythe University (named after the first law professor in America, who was a teacher of Thomas Jefferson), held a fundraising gala at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. Beck, who was then riding high as a Fox News host, was the special guest, tapped to receive the school’s annual “Statesman Award.” Romney introduced him.

In a video message—obtained by Mother Jones—that was recorded for the event, Romney praised Beck and this school, which the US Department of Justice has called a “diploma mill.” He hailed George Wythe University and its supporters for “building statesmen” and “moving forward the cause of liberty and building men and women of virtue and wisdom, diplomacy, and courage.” He introduced Beck as a “man who is really making an impact in our entire country today.” Romney noted that Beck’s “approach is refreshing” and that he “tries to focus his message on action…on learning the principles of freedom and liberty, on standing up and making your voice heard, on reading and applying the wisdom of our nation’s founders to the challenges of today.” Beck, he asserted, was “a statesman in his own right.” Here’s the video:

Frankly, attending and supporting a fundraiser for an unaccredited college bothers me way the hell more than shameless fawning over a powerful member of what purports to be the media.

This is tin foil coming straight of Romney's mouth.

W. Cleon Skousen was one of the craziest of the far right anti-communist Mormons -- racist too. Unfortunately most people probably aren't aware of how utterly insane this is.

5 darthstar  Thu, Oct 11, 2012 10:45:08am

This would be during a period when said 'statesman' was making daily comparisons of a sitting United States President to a certain Adolf Hitler, right? So Mitt Romney at this point in time agreed with Glenn Beck, one can assume, that we were under Nazi rule in the US.

Thing is, I think we've reached "dead girl/live boy" territory with Willard in his ability to bullshit the public. 2 years of lying his ass off seemingly got erased by 90 minutes of more lies. And the media, instead of pointing out the lies, is too busy arguing over whether his balls are made of brass or steel.

Obama needs to make an ad from this. Portray Romney as being so craven that he will pander to extremists.

Or suggest that Romney is an extremist himself, as LBJ did with Goldwater in that famous "daisy girl" ad.

Yeah, yeah, Wikipedia, but this is the accreditation organization whose blessing is sought by this bunch of whackos:

AALE was formed in 1992 by Jacques Barzun, retired professor from Columbia University, E.O. Wilson of Harvard and Lynne Cheney, former US Secretary of Education, among others.

In December 2006, the U.S. Department of Education suspended AALE's authority to accredit new institutions and programs, following a determination by the Department's National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity that AALE had been lax in not setting minimum standards for what students must learn at the colleges it had accredited. This restriction was lifted in December 2007. In the ruling that lifted the restrictions for a period of three years (expiring in December, 2010), Education Secretary Margaret Spellings wrote of "continued concerns stemming from AALE's being cited consistently since 2001 for either not having clear standards with respect to measuring student outcomes or not collecting and reviewing data on how institutions it accredits measures student outcomes." The AALE petitioned the Department of Education for renewal of recognition in December, 2010.

All the usual suspects.

Communists, Capitalists and Jews

Students of the American far right may not recognize the anodyne-sounding NCCS, but they no doubt know the name of its founder, the late W. Cleon Skousen. By the time Skousen founded The Freeman Institute in 1971 (the name was changed to NCCS in 1984), the bespectacled former police chief had become a minor legend in the annals of right-wing radicalism. Throughout the late 1950s and 60s, following 11 years of mostly administrative work in the FBI, Skousen toured the country whipping up anti-communist (and anti-civil rights) hysteria under the banner of the John Birch Society. Among the stories in Skousen's fantastical arsenal was the claim that New Dealer Harry Hopkins gave the Soviets "50 suitcases" worth of information on the Manhattan Project and nearly half of the nation's supply of enriched uranium. When the John Birch Society came under attack for its founder's claim that Dwight Eisenhower was a communist agent, Skousen wrote a pamphlet titled The Communist Attack on the John Birch Society.

In the 1970s, he penned an influential tract of New World Order conspiracism, The Naked Capitalist, which described a cabal of scheming, internationalist-minded bankers and government officials set on destroying the Constitution by manipulating left and liberal groups around the world. The purpose of liberal internationalist groups such as the Council on Foreign Relations, Skousen believed, is to push "U.S. foreign policy toward the establishment of a world-wide collectivist society."

Among the sources Skousen cited to substantiate this claim was is a former czarist army officer named Arsene de Goulevitch, whose own sources included Boris Brasol, a White Russian émigré who provided Henry Ford with the first English translation of the Jew-bashing classic, Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and later became a supporter of Nazi Germany.

31 wrenchwench  Thu, Oct 11, 2012 11:09:38am
In a 2007 radio interview, Romney said that he had not read The Making of America, but that it was "worth reading." Romney cited another Skousen book to explain Mormon theology regarding the second coming of Christ. In another radio interview that year, Romney recalled taking a class at BYU on the Bible taught by Skousen, whom he called "a brilliant man and a wonderful story teller."

The gut feeling I had that Romney is a creep just became an intellectual certainty.

re: #16 Sheila Broflovski

Offended a lot of people by portraying Goldwater as an extremist, which he never was.

Goldwater would be considered a liberal compared to present-day GOP.

Indeed he would be considered a liberal today. In fact, in the 80's he famously replied to Jerry Falwell's claim that all good Christians should support Israel by saying, "all good Christians should kick Jerry Falwell's ass." He also came out in support of gays serving in the military by saying something along the lines of "it doesn't matter if you are straight, only that you can shoot straight."

Yet Goldwater's straight shooting is ultimately what did him in. In the early 60's, he was the picture of shooting first, aiming later (ie his comment about lobbing an atomic bomb into the Kremlin men's room). He may have been tame by the standards of the early 60's compared to now, and he may have evolved a lot before he died, but at the time, he was very much an extremist, and LBJ ably used his own words against him. Obama needs to do the same to Romney. If done right, this and a solid debate performance can reverse the momentum back towards Obama, which desperately needs to happen.

This may sound cliche, but right now, a Romney presidency combined with a tea party Congress scares the hell out of me.

Ryan-endorsed Wisconsin Republican: ‘Some girls rape so easy’

State Rep. Roger Rivard (R) later insisted he was merely recounting a story from his father about the dangers men face in having premarital sex. Instead, he somehow wandered into a jaw-dropping commentary on how easy it is to accidentally rape women.

According to quotes reported by the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, Rivard explained:

He also told me one thing, ‘If you do (have premarital sex), just remember, consensual sex can turn into rape in an awful hurry.’ Because all of a sudden a young lady gets pregnant and the parents are madder than a wet hen and she’s not going to say, ‘Oh, yeah, I was part of the program.’ All that she has to say or the parents have to say is it was rape because she’s underage. And he just said, ‘Remember, Roger, if you go down that road, some girls,’ he said, ‘they rape so easy.’

What the whole genesis of it was, it was advice to me, telling me, ‘If you’re going to go down that road, you may have consensual sex that night and then the next morning it may be rape.’ So the way he said it was, ‘Just remember, Roger, some girls, they rape so easy. It may be rape the next morning.’

More on Skousen, from Wiki.

Skousen disregarded all federal regulatory agencies and argued for the abolition of everything from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to the Environmental Protection Agency. He also wanted to repeal the minimum wage, eliminate unions, nullify anti-discrimination laws, sell off public lands and national parks, end the direct election of senators, eliminate the income tax and the estate tax, remove the walls separating church and state, and end the Federal Reserve System.

This is who Romney found brilliant and inspiring. Curiously, this bears a close resemblance to Romney's own stated goals.

Voter Register Caught On Video: "I Don't Get Credit For Democrats"

Noticing a man registering voters outside the main post office on Vassar he says he couldn't believing what he was hearing as he passed. So he returned to engage the man in conversation and took video of it all on his cell phone..

It all seemed normal at first.

"It's your last hour to register to vote," the man said.

"Are you registering both parties?" our viewer asked.

The man said yes, but then the conversation took the same strange turn our viewer thought he'd heard in passing.

"Could you do me a favor?" the man asked. "Mark non-partisan on there. I'll get credit for it. I don't get credit for Democrats.

I am a Democrat," he continued. "So I still do Democrats if I have to, but I'm working for the Republican Party. I have to get two an hour and I don't get credit for Democrats."

The poll found 68% of people in the San Fernando Valley-based porn industry said they would like Obama to win the election, compared with 13% for Romney.

Fourteen percent said they preferred "someone else"

and 5% said they didn't care.

79 HappyWarrior  Thu, Oct 11, 2012 11:33:56am

I'm starting to think that the real Romney is closer to what we saw (well prior to the debates) than the guy running in Massachusetts in 1994 and 2002. Remember reading an article that said that LDS elders apparently told him to go moderate on choice to make himself look palatable to Massachusetts voters. Who knows but I know this, anyone who thinks the stuff he said about Skousen isn't a moderate.

Beck’s “approach is refreshing” and that he “tries to focus his message on action…on learning the principles of freedom and liberty, on standing up and making your voice heard

Except if you're a dirty liberal or progressive in which case such standing up 'action' and 'making your voice heard' constitutes radicalism, rebellion, mob activity and general all around unAmerican behavior.

or a union worker- given that Skousen wanted to ban unions which I would think would be unconstitutional since organizing a labor union I think is covered in the freedom to assemble.

To me, this Skousen connection is far more disturbing and damning than any of Romney's other controversies. This is a direct link to the truly insane far right - and Romney didn't just read about Skousen, he was taught by him personally.

This is the worst kind of right wing bad craziness.

I happened to listen to Glenn Beck for a few minutes yesterday, all I could stand even with extensive combat and teaching experience. He was carrying on about Obama "pursuing a Muslim brotherhood agenda" and persecuting whistle blowers who try to bring this insidious plot to the attention of the sheeple. He claimed the MB has infiltrated the federal government, the education system, and the media among others.
This is actually nuttier than Joe McCarthy in many ways and Beck doesn't even have the excuse of being drunk most of the time.

Pretty much the equivalent of an alternate universe where Obama was taught by Farrakhan and called him brilliant and inspiring. Which would have prevented him from getting the presidency.

That Skousen gets less attention and less condemnation is, in part, because of their respective races.

Reince Priebus whines that Soledad O’Brien too ‘passionate’ about grilling Romney

“I’m going to read to you the verbate of what that question said: ‘Do you intend to pursue any legislation?’” O’Brien repeated. “I’m only repeating it because it’s a complete contradiction.”

“You just keep repeating it and repeating it and repeating it,” Priebus complained.

“I’d like you to answer it because I keep repeating it,” the CNN host shot back. “Explain to me how it’s not a contradiction.”

“And I’m going to keep giving you the same — it isn’t a contradiction,” Priebus insisted. “You know what? He is going to have a piece of legislation in his budget that says there isn’t going to be taxpayer money used for abortion through Planned Parenthood. Why can’t you accept that?”

“Because you’ve just admitted a contradiction!” O’Brien replied.

“Soledad, I wish you’d be as passionate about taking Barack Obama to task for every one of his promises and for every one of his changes that he didn’t follow through on in the last four years,” Priebus quipped.

“No, you go to the hospital, you get treated, you get care, and it’s paid for, either by charity, the government or by the hospital. We don’t have people that become ill, who die in their apartment because they don’t have insurance.”

Snopes: Does Obama wear a ring praising Allah?

All of the images used to illustrate the claim are either blurry, low-resolution close-ups or shots taken from too distant a perspective to clearly show the details of the gold band. Isolating the ring from a much higher-resolution photograph of President Obama's hand taken by photographer Miguel Villagran during a 5 June 2009 news conference in Dresden, Germany, shows the ring to bear what looks like nothing more than a plain loop-like pattern, with the top section matching the bottom:

Romney healthcare

“But then once people have all had that opportunity to become insured, if someone chooses not to become insured, and waits for 10 or 20 years and then gets ill and then says ‘Now I want insurance,’ you could hardly say to an insurance company, ‘Oh, you must take this person now that they’re sick,’ or there’d literally be no reason to have insurance.

Yes. Interesting priorities you've got there.

Links from the Gawker network of sites have been banned from the Reddit US Politics sub-forum, r/politics. The ban was instigated by a moderator after a Gawker.com journalist, Adrian Chen, apparently threatened to expose the real-life identity of redditor violentacrez, the creator of r/jailbait and r/creepshots. These two sub-forums, or "subreddits" were dedicated to, respectively, sexualised pictures of under-18s and sexualised pictures of women – frequently also under-age – taken in public without their knowledge or consent.

Fischer: 'We Cannot Give One Millimeter to the Forces of Homosexual Activism'

Bryan Fischer has already made it clear this week that there cannot be any dialogue or compromise with those who do not share his views because, in his view, liberals "cannot be reasoned with ... they can only be defeated."

Fischer repeated this point again today while discussing the recent decision by Gallaudet University to place its chief diversity officer on paid administrative leave for signing petition aimed at overturning Maryland's marriage equality law, saying it proved that the Constitution and the "homosexual agenda" cannot co-exist and so Christians "cannot give an inch, we cannot give one centimeter, we cannot give one millimeter to the forces of homosexual activism. We cannot accommodate, we can't compromise, we can't find middle ground, they cannot be reasoned with, they cannot be compromised with, they cannot be dialogued with, they can only be defeated":

Report Follows the Decades-Long Saga of Obama's 'Muslim Ring'

According to a news story on the respected Worldnet News Daily (WND) web site – with an accompanying array of photos as evidence – U.S. President Barack H. Obama has been wearing, since his days in college, a ring on which is inscribed the Shahada, the main Muslim prayer. The report quoted Egyptian-born Islamic scholar and author of five books on Islam, Mark Gabriel, as saying that based on the photos, Obama, if not a Muslim, had a very close connection to the religion. There can be no doubt that someone wearing the inscription ‘There is no god except Allah,’ the main feature of the Shahada, has a very close connection to Islamic beliefs, the Islamic religion and Islamic society to which this statement is so strongly attached,” Gabriel said...

Obama: Romney Now ‘Severely Kidding’ About Past Positions

In a notably sharper stump speech on Thursday, President Obama attacked Mitt Romney for his shifting positions on taxes, health care and education by using the Republican's own descriptor as "severely conservative."

"He's trying to go through an extreme makeover. After running for more than a year in which he called himself severely conservative, Mitt Romney's trying to convince you that he was severely kidding," said Obama at a campaign event in Florida. "Look. What he was selling was not working. Because people understood his ideas wouldn't help the middle class so these days Mitt Romney's for whatever you're for."

Hot item today I guess, ahead of tonight's debate, is the Time mag picture spread of Ryan doing a workout:

Eeek - if I looked like that at the gym something would be horribly, horribly wrong.

re: #207 Kragar

Fischer repeated this point again today while discussing the recent decision by Gallaudet University to place its chief diversity officer on paid administrative leave for signing petition aimed at overturning Maryland's marriage equality law, saying it proved that the Constitution and the "homosexual agenda" cannot co-exist

Actually Mr. Fischer the group supporting the Marriage Equality Law (you know, "the enemy?") immediately asked the university to reinstate her as soon as this was reported. They released a statement saying...

“We strongly disagree with the decision to put the chief diversity officer on leave and hope she is reinstated immediately. Everyone is entitled to free speech and to their own opinion about Question 6, which is about treating everyone fairly and equally under the law.”

Yeah but Fischer prefers to live in a fantasy world where pro gay marriage activists are bullies. Anyhow, that's pretty magnanimous of them.

This obsession with Obama, in this case his "ring", follows on the heels of the other obsession with an Obama ring - the mysterious one that showed up in a picture that looked like a wedding ring, and thus proving (in the pea brains of the wingnuts) that Obama was married before he met Michelle.

There is no end of this stupidity.

Yep. Obama wuz married before to a gay moozlim!!11ty

Good for them. I hope the University responds accordingly. As well as issuing an apology for being so ham fisted.

re: #171 Killgore Trout

I saw the reddit thread on that yesterday. I don't know who's creepier, the redditor of the gawker reporter stalking him.

The guy who wants to have sex with underage children is creepier.

That was pretty easy, actually.

Christians "cannot give an inch, we cannot give one centimeter, we cannot give one millimeter to the forces of homosexual activism. We cannot accommodate, we can't compromise, we can't find middle ground, they cannot be reasoned with, they cannot be compromised with, they cannot be dialogued with, they can only be defeated"

I'm trying to picture Jesus saying this and I can't.

Whoever Fischer follows is NOT the man I do.

Good news from Canada.

Qur'an-burning Pastor Terry Jones denied entry to Canada

TORONTO -- Controversial Qur'an-burning Pastor Terry Jones has been denied entry into Canada.

Sun News reports the Gainsville, Fla., pastor was held for four hours at the Detroit-Windsor, Ont., crossing Thursday and turned away by Canada Border Services.

Jones told QMI Agency on Wednesday that he was optimistic he would be allowed to enter Canada.

Thompson's Staff in Dispute with Media

The campaign staff of Republican Senate candidate Tommy Thompson tried to keep the news media away from Thompson Friday afternoon, as a reporter questioned the candidate about property Thompson owns in other states.

When politicians finish speaking to the Milwaukee Press Club, they're usually available for additional questions from the media. But Friday, Thompson tried to quickly leave a press club luncheon. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Columnist Dan Bice waited for Thompson out on the sidewalk and started asking the former governor a few questions including about homes Thompson owns elsewhere, "You just bought a house in Florida last year, right (yeh) you had nine condos in Washington.”

Well they call him by the prince of peace
And they call him by the savior
And they pray to him upon the seas
And in every bold endeavor
As they fill his churches with their pride and gold
And their faith in him increases
But they've turned the nature that I worshipped in
From a temple to a robber's den
In the words of the rebel jesus

- Rebel Jesus

I can't believe we're really talking about this. Obama wears a Seekrit Muslim Decoder Ring, and he's been in public life for well over a decade, and nobody noticed until just now because an election might just possibly be coming up in three or four weeks.

You can't make this stuff up.

Sure you could, because the RWNJs excel at making shit up like this out of whole cloth.
