I keep hearing the same thing over and over again: "Biden acted angry/unhinged, his laughing was totally unprofessional, and he made a mockery of his office!" At the same time, they're taking turns tongue-bathing Ryan and lauding his performance, but can't seem to remember any of the answers he gave.

it looks to me like they've successfully hidden what us democratic supporters clearly saw as a win for biden by "acting as if". democrats it seems were too honest in admitting that barack gave a poor debate performance and missed the opportunity to spin
(on the other hand, one bright spot is that the tipp tracking poll has shown obama steadily regaining his lead, altho rass and gallup continue to show romney ahead by two...)

Biden gave Ryan's positions the derision they deserved. Trying to debate in a serious manner with a man who has no compunction against lying his ass off only leaves you looking like a fool. See the first presidential debate for how a somber, serious approach to the Romney/Ryan style of debating works.

More off-putting than Ryan's shameless, disgusting LYING? Sorry, but derisive laughter is the only appropriate response to Gish-Gallop bullshitting. If everybody laughed at these worse-than-Bush retreads, the US (and the world at large) would be far better off.

Personally think it's a joke to call these things "debates" anymore. A debate, as Charles noted, involves both sides presenting their sides of the argument and being penalized for provable lies. What we have today is what's come about as a result of the introduction of television, namely performance pieces where the side who can give the best canned speeches in response to increasingly pointless questions while maintaining a smile "wins."

Personally think that's the media's interpretation of Biden's performance. I saw it more like a grandfather laughing at a grandchild who's trying to act as if he's possessed of wits that just aren't there. Biden's seen plenty of Paul Ryans come and go in Congress in his decades of service. Why should he treat this one any differently because he's debating him on live TV rather in the backrooms of Capital Hill?

I'd agree that these are choreographed events, performance pieces meant to win over voters with "style" than any substance. We fool ourselves by saying we want a "serious" debate over the "issues." But then the next day we talk all about the funniest/strongest "zingers" and about how the one guy looked like was passing a kidney stone while the other didn't break a sweat.
Consider that the big difference in who won the Kennedy/Nixon debate is what medium you heard it in. You listened to the radio, you thought Nixon won, but if you watched TV you thought he was sweating like a whore in church. Does anybody remember any of the answers Carter gave in '80? No, but they remember "There you go again" from Reagan. And let's remember the now infamous "You're no Jack Kennedy."

From the end of that RS piece:
Listen to Mitt Romney speak, and see if you can notice what's missing. This is a man who grew up in Michigan, went to college in California, walked door to door through the streets of southern France as a missionary and was a governor of Massachusetts, the home of perhaps the most instantly recognizable, heavily accented English this side of Edinburgh. Yet not a trace of any of these places is detectable in Romney's diction. None of the people in any of those places bled in and left a mark on the man.
Romney is a man from nowhere. In his post-regional attitude, he shares something with his campaign opponent, Barack Obama, whose background is a similarly jumbled pastiche of regionally nonspecific non-identity. But in the way he bounced around the world as a half-orphaned child, Obama was more like an involuntary passenger in the demographic revolution reshaping the planet than one of its leaders.
Romney, on the other hand, is a perfect representative of one side of the ominous cultural divide that will define the next generation, not just here in America but all over the world. Forget about the Southern strategy, blue versus red, swing states and swing voters – all of those political clichés are quaint relics of a less threatening era that is now part of our past, or soon will be. The next conflict defining us all is much more unnerving.
That conflict will be between people who live somewhere, and people who live nowhere. It will be between people who consider themselves citizens of actual countries, to which they have patriotic allegiance, and people to whom nations are meaningless, who live in a stateless global archipelago of privilege – a collection of private schools, tax havens and gated residential communities with little or no connection to the outside world.
Mitt Romney isn't blue or red. He's an archipelago man. That's a big reason that voters have been slow to warm up to him. From LBJ to Bill Clinton to George W. Bush to Sarah Palin, Americans like their politicians to sound like they're from somewhere, to be human symbols of our love affair with small towns, the girl next door, the little pink houses of Mellencamp myth. Most of those mythical American towns grew up around factories – think chocolate bars from Hershey, baseball bats from Louisville, cereals from Battle Creek. Deep down, what scares voters in both parties the most is the thought that these unique and vital places are vanishing or eroding – overrun by immigrants or the forces of globalism or both, with giant Walmarts descending like spaceships to replace the corner grocer, the family barber and the local hardware store, and 1,000 cable channels replacing the school dance and the gossip at the local diner.Obama ran on "change" in 2008, but Mitt Romney represents a far more real and seismic shift in the American landscape. Romney is the frontman and apostle of an economic revolution, in which transactions are manufactured instead of products, wealth is generated without accompanying prosperity, and Cayman Islands partnerships are lovingly erected and nurtured while American communities fall apart. The entire purpose of the business model that Romney helped pioneer is to move money into the archipelago from the places outside it, using massive amounts of taxpayer-subsidized debt to enrich a handful of billionaires. It's a vision of society that's crazy, vicious and almost unbelievably selfish, yet it's running for president, and it has a chance of winning. Perhaps that change is coming whether we like it or not. Perhaps Mitt Romney is the best man to manage the transition. But it seems a little early to vote for that kind of wholesale surrender.

I posted about this yesterday, but I heard an explanation (maybe on The Newshour?) as to why there is such a jump for Romney in the polls.
The polls are compiled by people who make phone calls. They use whatever methodology they favor to select people to call, but they don't control who is willing to talk to them. So, Obama gives a lackluster performance at the debate and a pollster calls a Democrat. Said Democrat is feeling kind of depressed and doesn't want to talk to a pollster, so: no input from him. The pollster calls a Republican and needless to say, he's feeling pumped and ready to give his opinion. There is only so much a pollster can do to try to judge how much of this is going on, so polls tend to skew toward whomever is feeling excited, even though both people may well vote.

And that's why the "enthusiasm gap" is such a big thing this year, as while Romney may not be winning many converts, the GOP as a whole are more determined to throw out Obama that Democrats seem to be to keep him in office. Once again, Democrats are their own biggest critics and worst enemies.

And that's why the "enthusiasm gap" is such a big thing this year, as while Romney may not be winning many converts, the GOP as a whole are more determined to throw out Obama that Democrats seem to be to keep him in office. Once again, Democrats are their own biggest critics and worst enemies.
That's why I get nervous that the election may hinge on the exalted "undecideds", or as I like to call them, "Stupid Fucking Idiots Who Don't Remember Which Party Drove Us into the Worst Financial Crisis Since the Great Depression."
I do need to work on that wording.

They may very be doing so. Want to know why? Look through LGF's own comments, if not the broad spectrum of liberal pundits in the days and weeks leading up to the first debate. How many thought Obama was gonna have such a shitty performance? Hell, I know I myself kept saying the same thing, which was so long as Romney didn't shit himself on stage, he would be declared the "winner." But none of us expected that Obama would let Willard drop a shit ton of whoopers on him and not respond in a forceful manner.

Personally, I don't really understand why everyone seems to be in such a tailspin over Obama's debate performance. Yes, he needs to project an aura of authority in the next debate, but for heaven's sake, it was just a single debate. I'd like to think that content carries some weight-that it's not all about style.

Yes, I had not thought of that before, but Mitt doesn't seem to have been anywhere, that is you can't tell where he's been by hearing him speak, based on accent or references. No matter where I go, I look for a bubbler, I ask if anyone wants Pop, and the colors Green and Gold strike a personal chord and of course my Midwestern accent- I will always be obviously from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Interesting to note that Obama has been called out for "sounding different"at times as if to say revealing his background or something personal was cynically considered pandering. . .I like the glimpses into unscripted territory. . .

I heard something similar to this in regards to businesses having no qualms about outsourcing/offshoring due to globalization.
The gist being that they held no loyalty to this country.
The only thing that Mitt and his ilk have any loyalty to is cold, hard cash and the methods that they use to extract it from everyone else.
That RS article should be required reading before this election.

The dickhead who led the anti-drone protest with Code Pink last week.....
Imran Khan says Taliban's 'holy war' in Afghanistan is justified by Islamic law
Speaking after visiting a hospital in Peshawar where Malala Yousafzai – the 14-year-old activist shot in the head by the Taliban for supporting girls' education – was treated last week, Khan told reporters that insurgents in Afghanistan were fighting a "jihad". Citing a verse from the Qur'an, he said: "It is very clear that whoever is fighting for their freedom is fighting a jihad …
"The people who are fighting in Afghanistan against the foreign occupation are fighting a jihad," he added, according to a video of remarks to journalists.
Afghan politicians have reacted with disbelief, with one parliamentarian suggesting Khan should be arrested. The Ulema Council, a grouping of senior clerics, declared his comments "unislamic".
A Kabul foreign ministry spokesman said Khan was "either profoundly and dangerously ignorant about the reality in Afghanistan, or he has ill will against the Afghan people.
"Our children are killed on daily basis, civilians killed and our schools, hospitals and infrastructure attacked on a daily basis. To call any of that jihad is profoundly wrong and misguided."

Even working in a toxic work environment with lunatic managers can drive a person nuts. Now apply that to an entire authority-driven subculture where every single one of the authorities is either constantly lying to maintain their position, or completely delusional.

Completely acceptable in the GOP nowadays. Hell, Romney's endorsed birtherism in about every way possible-- he jokes about it, he's got Trump, birther-in-chief campaigning for him, and he uses dog-whistles like the birthers.

Indeed, that was a large part of Obama's mistake, which was treating Willard's lies as though they were something worthy of debate, rather than derision. When your opponent tries to bury you in lies, acting as though he's trying to engage in serious debate is suicidal. Of course, that's been part of Obama's problem from the start, an inability to acknowledge that the GOP simply wants him out of office, rather than being some "loyal opposition."

re: #122 Dark_Falcon
Biden was worse than Mitt by a good bit (though my opinion is admittedly biased on that score), but he won the debate and so did Romney. Lesson to learn: Nice Guys Finish Last. Mitt needs to remember that and hammer Obama hard.
So, you say that Biden was more of an (perceived) asshole to Ryan than Romney was to Obama and your solution is...for Romney to be even more assholish next debate?
Great logic there, Dark...

And to me as well. Biden could have stood firm but still showed class' Instead he acted like an asshole. Mitt Romney should take that as a warning and if Obama tries acting like that, Romney should be just as hostile in return.
Moreover. if Mitt is getting a good line going he should simply steamroll Candy Crowley and press on. Paul Ryan let that happen too often and it cost him.
Oh please, you were probably creaming your Cheney underwear over how Romney 'won' the first debate because Obama did nothing to challenge Romney's bullshit, yet Biden challenges your boy on his garbage and it's "omg Biden's an asshole!"
Probably 80+% of the folks here are giving you the same "this guy is full of shit" smirk that Biden gave Ryan, and rightfully so.

Close. I keep thinking about that condescending expression Ryan had when he mentioned how Biden should know that words don't always come out the way he wants in response to Mitt's 47% truth-telling-when-he-didn't-know-he-was-being-recorded. I wanted to slap the snot outa him. Biden handled it much better with "I mean what I say, so did Mitt." Perfect.

Even in the comics, there's been no answer as to how it started or who/what started it. It seems to follow a very Romero-style bent, however, in that anybody who dies from something that doesn't destroy the brain will be changed. The bites just cause a massive infection that burns out the sufferer.

Why were they seized? Child Porn. Do you do wireless? Do you use encryption? We did. We (used to) use the (basically) useless WEP encryption.
It failed and it bit us in the ass.
We thought we where protected. We were not. As a result,We got hammered with a Federal ICE warrant because someone managed to break our code and use our access point to look for and download this crap.

i could believe reagan's and the bush's wins, because they did a much better job of lying
r&r just clearly explain how they will screw the middle class and then smilingly claim that the outcome of abusing you will be that you will be better off
two weeks ago it wasn't working and i can't for the life of me understand why they are suddenly winning now
if there is somebody here who's changed their mind since the first debate, perhaps they can explain to me why they decided that getting a crappier deal suddenly sounded like a great idea
one-third of lower income people support Romney. It isn't just that they're stupid. It's that there are a ton of mostly religious people in this country who really do believe that enormous wealth makes you a member of the elect, and God obviously only has members of the elect who are righteous in his eyes. So consequently, poor people are poor and miserable for the simple reason that they deserve to be.
