Politifact Gets It Wrong Again: Obama Did Consistently Use “Act of Terror” to Describe Libya Attack

“Half true?”
Politics • Views: 28,537

The right wing blogs and media are all screeching in unison again, furiously trying to pretend that President Obama never referred to the Libyan embassy attack as an “act of terror” until 2 weeks later.

In other words, as usual, they’re all shilling for Mitt Romney’s lies.

So let’s look at President Obama’s exact words, as he delivered them in the White House Rose Garden on September 12, 2012: Remarks by the President on the Deaths of U.S. Embassy Staff in Libya | the White House.

No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.

The right wing spin is that Obama was speaking of “acts of terror” in a general sense — but that’s ridiculous. The only way you can believe that is if you totally ignore the sentences that follow, where he specifically makes the connection to the Libya attack.

But then, that’s what right wingers are great at — ignoring facts and context. Politifact isn’t supposed to do that, though. Their report on Romney’s lie is almost as bad as the right wing spin: PolitiFact | Romney Says Obama Waited 14 Days to Call Libya Attack Terror.

In fact, Obama described it in those terms the day after the attack. But in the days that followed, neither he nor all the members of his administration spoke consistently on the subject. There were many suggestions that the attack was part of demonstrations over an American-made video that disparaged Islam.

We rate the statement Half True.

Unfortunately, Politifact’s claim that Obama only used the T word once, the day after the attack, is just flat wrong.

He used the same phrase to refer to the Libyan attack in Colorado the very next day, September 13: Remarks by the President in Golden, CO | the White House.

Let me say at the outset that obviously our hearts are heavy this week — we had a tough day a couple of days ago, for four Americans were killed in an attack on our diplomatic post in Libya.  Yesterday I had a chance to go over to the State Department to talk to friends and colleagues of those who were killed.  And these were Americans who, like so many others, both in uniform and civilians, who serve in difficult and dangerous places all around the world to advance the interests and the values that we hold dear as Americans.

And a lot of times their work goes unheralded, doesn’t get a lot of attention, but it is vitally important.  We enjoy our security and our liberty because of the sacrifices that they make.  And they do an outstanding job every single day without a lot of fanfare.  (Applause.)

So what I want all of you to know is that we are going to bring those who killed our fellow Americans to justice.  (Applause.)  I want people around the world to hear me:  To all those who would do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished. It will not dim the light of the values that we proudly present to the rest of the world.  No act of violence shakes the resolve of the United States of America.  (Applause.)

The fact is that Obama consistently referred to the attack as an “act of terror,” in public, more than once, immediately following the incident.

Politifact should correct their mistake; Romney’s statement, echoing a bogus right wing attack line, was simply false.

That bit I said about most suspicious claims not being distillable to a single Super Duper Fact Rating (TM)... yeah, this is one of the ones that can. And Politifact still fucked it up.

And being a response to the video somehow makes it...not terrorism or something? I'm confused, what exactly is the inconsistency here?

Yeah but Obama didn't immediately declare war against Libya and Islam and start dropping bombs right away and ratchet up the old alert colors or whatever those things were from the W admin so no matter how many times he said some variation of 'terrorism' it won't matter to the RWNJ.

It's just incredibly weird to me how many people are saying this. You're exactly right -- there is no contradiction. It was a terror attack, yes, by Islamist militants. And they specifically said that the reason they attacked was in retaliation for the video.

This is not an either/or situation. The people trying to picture it like that are either being dishonest, or have serious trouble making logical connections.

Crowley refuses to backtrack as Romney surrogate says fact check ‘not your place’

“Goodness, I hope they get back to one another,” Crowley replied, adding that her comments following the debate were “exactly the same” as the original fact check. “He did say ‘acts of terror,’ call it an act of terror, but, Gov. Romney, you are perfectly right that it took weeks for them to get past the tape.”

“Not a backtrack?” O’Brien wondered.

“No!” Crowley said. “Now, did the president say, ‘This was an act of terror’? The president did not say [that], he said, these ‘acts of terror.’ But he was in the Rose Garden to talk about Benghazi so I don’t think that’s a leap.”

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), who was appearing on Wednesday morning’s CNN panel as a Romney surrogate, told Crowley that “it wasn’t necessarily your place to try to be fact checker right there. I happen to think that your assessment of that was wrong. … It’s not the role of the moderator to say, ‘Mr. President, you’re right.’”

“Nonsense,” CNN liberal contributor Roland Martin quipped. “The congressman is dead wrong. If you stand there and say something that is wrong, you should be corrected on the spot. Look, I have no problem even having a table of fact checkers there. We shouldn’t wait until the debate is over and then have different people saying, this was right, this was wrong. More people are watching that singular debate than they’re watching anyone’s particular coverage.”

“And so if you say something and it’s wrong, you check them right then,” he added.

To the wingnut mind, it's evidence of a dastardly cover-up. Because in their strange universe, Obama actually sympathizes with the attackers. Mitt Romney said this outright, the day of the attack, and it's been the right wing line ever since.

Our Secretary of State spoke of AQ connections with the militants. The attack happened on 9/11. That's a clear tie to not just terrorists but THE terrorists we worry about the most.

But no real mention of the anniversary date, just the terror language and talk of the video.

It's almost as if the attack date was somehow proven a coincidence.

So the day after the attacks in Libya, the President gives a speech in the Rose Garden to address the attack in Libya....but he wasn't really talking about the attack in Libya?

The people who actually carried out the attack specifically said it was retaliation for the video's insults to Islam. They made absolutely no mention of 9/11, in two separate press conferences.

There's no reason to think this was connected to 9/11. The militants would have boasted about that if it were.

17 JamesWI  Wed, Oct 17, 2012 11:43:43am

Obama really needs to come out in the next debate and say something like "Look, they're so desperate to try to score political points off of this attack, that they're seriously trying to argue that there's a difference between calling something an "act of terror" and calling it a "terrorist attack." This is what the Romney campaign is focused on. This is what Romney thinks is leadership."

I keep hearing "rumors" that Hillary is going to bail and start her behind-the-scenes campaign for 2016. Thus "they" are going to give Romney this round, so a Democrat can win in 2016.

Not that I would trust that in anyway shape or form.

Barber: Personhood Amendments are Just Like Efforts to Free the Slaves

Today, in discussing the legal efforts that Liberty Counsel is undertaking on behalf of this effort, Matt Barber explained that efforts to pass "personhood" amendments is just like effort to end slavery because "this merely does what we did in freeing the slaves; this frees these little people from the overhanging threat of abortion homicide":

Sorry ladies, but giving up control of your reproductive rights and control of your own body is just like ending slavery. Its so obvious now.

Difference is I think Barber and his allies would probably be using the bible to justify slavery had they been around in the lead up to the Civil War. Maybe I'm being unfair but with Louie Gohmert claiming that while slavery was deplorable, that the time period when slavery was around was a better time than now. It really makes me wonder.

Yeah, I heard that as well from wingnuts who are sure that Hillary's gonna bail, because she "wants" to run in '16 against an incumbent Romney than as an Obama successor.

Of course the right assumes in their hearts that Obama is in sympathy with the attackers. Over the years, their rhetoric has so cheapened and diluted the terminology that they are literally unable to distinguish among views different from their own. Their opponents, even other conservatives, are routinely referred to as "extreme liberals" and even "ultra-liberals." Anyone but a neo-confederate is a radical social experimenter. Anyone but a red-meat Randian capitalist is a Marxist. Anyone but a fundamentalist bigot is an Islamist or an atheist or (somehow) both. It is therefore impossible for them to distinguish real Marxists and Islamists from the targets of their invective. To them, Obama, Code Pink, and the Muslim Brotherhood are literally one and the same. They don't have the terms or the references to make a distinction.

PSA for parents: How to talk to your 38 year old son about birtherism.

Sit your 38-year-old son down in a setting where he's comfortable, like the bar at Applebee's or a driving range.

Explain to your son that, despite what he may hear from the cool kids at the office or read on Facebook, President Obama was definitely born in the United States.

Be specific: mention the birth certificate, the hospital records, the newspaper announcements, etc. Don't worry about overwhelming your 38-year-old son with details, because, after all, he is 38 years old, and he should be able to handle it.

There are a few more...

Barton Blames PFAW and Others for Creating 'Toxic" Environment Responsible for Christian Persecution

In August, the Liberty Institute and the Family Research Council released a joint report entitled "The Survey on Religious Hostility in America" which purported to be a "collection of more than 600 cases, detailing religious bigotry throughout America" ... but, for some reason, the incident they love to cite more than any other is a nearly twenty year old myth about an elementary school student who was supposedly yanked out of his seat and yelled at simply for praying before eating his lunch in the school cafeteria.

In reality, the student was disciplined for fighting in the lunch room in 1994 but the Religious Right continues to perpetuate this lie to this day. In fact, David Barton cites it repeatedly despite the fact that it is demonstrably false, and did so again today on "WallBuilders Live," as did the Liberty Institute's Kelly Shackelford, who was on the program to promote the report:

I keep hearing "rumors" that Hillary is going to bail and start her behind-the-scenes campaign for 2016. Thus "they" are going to give Romney this round, so a Democrat can win in 2016.

Not that I would trust that in anyway shape or form.

About a year ago (more or less, going by memory) she announced that she was getting out of politics after this term. That if Obama won she'd resign as Secretary of State after the inauguration, and stay around only long enough to ensure a smooth transition to her successor. She emphasized then that she had no intention of running for president or any other office in 2016.

In 2016 she'll be 69, past the age when most people retire. Sure, a lot of politicians hold on past then, but I find myself wishing we could push a mandatory retirement act for Congress. She knows what a stress that top job is - watched her husband and Bush and Obama age, a LOT, in the short time they held the position. I really think she means it.

Now if Obama offered her a seat on the US Supreme Court, it might tempt her out of her retirement. But for a number of reasons I don't think that'll happen.

Speaking of gambling...in talking about the debate last night, I mentioned to my wife that President Obama is apparently a good poker player, to which she said, "Yes, I can see that." He definitely played his cards right last night, pulling out A-K suited with Benghazi, both in putting Mitt in his place for denigrating the state department and his administration as an insult, and then pocket aces on the last hand with the 47% closing remarks. He even took a 7-9 off-suit and bluffed out a win on the George Bush question - primarily because Romney got scared and threw away pocket queens.

A lot of great single moms, single dads. But gosh to tell our kids that before they have babies, they ought to think about getting married to someone, that's a great idea.

More word salad, and then he finally remembers he's supposed to be talking about guns and that there was a program called "Fast and Furious" that he was supposed to use as an attack, but instead he uses it as an afterthought...

The -- the greatest failure we've had with regards to -- to gun violence in some respects is what -- what is known as Fast and Furious. Which was a program under this administration, and how it worked exactly I think we don't know precisely, where thousands of automatic, and AK-47 type weapons were -- were given to people that ultimately gave them to -- to drug lords.

But Candy wasn't having any of that...

CROWLEY: Governor, Governor, if I could, the question was about these assault weapons that once were once banned and are no longer banned.

I know that you signed an assault weapons ban when you were in Massachusetts, obviously, with this question, you no longer do support that. Why is that, given the kind of violence that we see sometimes with these mass killings? Why is it that you have changed your mind?

Romney Surrogate Calls Contraception A ‘Peripheral’ Issue

On MSNBC Wednesday, Kerry Healey, Mitt Romney’s Lieutenant Governor and a current surrogate for his campaign, called contraception a “peripheral” issue, and referred to women being denied contraception coverage because of religious objections a “hypothetical.”

Instead, she said, the focus of the campaign should be on the economy, because that’s “what women care about.” When pressed by host Andrea Mitchell on whether contraception is a “pocketbook issue,” Healey refused to say whether Romney supported employers’ right to deny their employees contraception coverage on religious grounds:

Hypothetical?

But it really wasn't a 1,000 pound bomb. It was an imaginary bomb. They could have very well said it was a 10,000 pound bomb.

New York Post: Terrorist attempts to blow up Federal Reserve Bank

A Middle Eastern man tried to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank in Lower Manhattan this morning, law-enforcement sources told the Post.

The terrorist parked a van filled with what he thought were explosives outside of the Liberty Street building, sources said, then tried to set them off using a cell phone detonator.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was provided the explosives from an undercover FBI agent that he met on the Internet and believed to be an accomplice, the sources said.

The suspect raised red flags after posting about Jihad online, they said.

The agent made contact with the jihadist about three months ago. The suspect told him that he wanted to blow up the bank, the sources said.

The suspect and the FBI agent planned the fake attack for months, sources said.

This morning, after parking the van, he went to the Millennium Hotel near the World Trade Center, where he called the cell phone in the van.

It did not explode, and he was arrested by federal agents.

The terrorist was the only one arrested, sources said.

According to the criminal complaint filed today in the Eastern District of New York, defendant Nafis, a Bangladeshi national, traveled to the United States in January 2012 for the purpose of conducting a terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

Nafis, who reported having overseas connections to al-Qaeda, attempted to recruit individuals to form a terrorist cell inside the United States. Nafis also actively sought out al-Qaeda contacts within the United States to assist him in carrying out an attack. Unbeknownst to Nafis, one of the individuals he attempted to recruit was actually a source for the FBI.

Looks like his Al Qaeda connections weren't that good since he wound up getting his "bomb" from the feds.

It's a religious thing as well. Most Christian denominations teach the only way true, proper Godly children can be raised is with a loving mother AND father in the house. A single parent, no matter how dedicated he or she may be, just can't make it.

I don't necessarily agree with those beliefs or think they are 100 percent in line with what the Bible says, but that's the common teaching.

None of his gotchas worked, to my delight. I loved Obama's response when Romney got into his face and asked all snotty and demanding-like "have you looked at your pension? HAVE YOU LOOKED AT YOUR PENSION?" The audience laughter was the cherry on the sundae, making Romney look even more foolish. It was golden.

That was just Mitt Romney's way of saying, "Hello America, I'm a dick."

Romney so wanted a Perry Mason moment, he seemed visibly pissed when Crowley corrected his ass.

I don't know if I've ever seen any candidate for President look as dickish as he did when he raised his eyebrows at the President of the United States when he thought he caught him in a lie. That was almost unbearable for me

So just for the sake of argument what difference would it make if President Obama took 14 days to call the Libya incident terrorism? What if based on the information he received, he wanted to investigate the matter before concluding that it was terrorism? What's the scandal in that?
After 9/11/2001, did the Democrats point fingers at the Bush administration and accuse Bush Officials of being careless, negligent, etc.? I don't recall that happening. Wonder why Republicans cannot rally around the President and support his efforts to bring justice for the four Americans killed in Libya.
Sad and pathetic, indeed.

It's a COVER-UP! Don't you see? Obama covered up that he's a secret Muslim sympathizer, out to contaminate our precious bodily fluids with stealth shariah, who had to stop himself from handing out candy after the attack.

It helps to send the Politifact author, John Greenberg, an email. I did. You might mention that President Obama used the phrase Acts of Terror in the Rose Garden remarks, in Golden and in Las Vegas. He also never mentioned a video or any demonstrations.

His email address is jonzgreenberg@gmail.com
