New York Post Fake Outrage of the Day: Obama’s ‘Foreign Donations’

Yet another fake outrage recycled from the 2008 election
Wingnuts • Views: 32,341

Oh no, nothing biased about this headline at the always-wingnutty New York Post: Obama campaign accepted foreign Web donation — and may be hiding more.

Sure sounds sinister, doesn’t it? He MAY BE HIDING MORE!

Of course, if you bother to read past the headline, you discover that this “foreign web donation” is a claim without evidence by exactly one British citizen, who says he made two $5.00 donations to the Obama campaign through its website.

Yes, he’s claiming he donated a grand total of $10.00. And that’s not the end of the silliness.

Chris Walker, a British citizen who lives outside London, told The Post he was able to make two $5 donations to President Obama’s campaign this month through its Web site while a similar attempt to give Mitt Romney cash was rejected. It is illegal to knowingly solicit or accept money from foreign citizens.

Walker said he used his actual street address in England but entered Arkansas as his state with the Schenectady, NY, ZIP code of 12345.

That’s right; he entered a US state and zip code, which means that if he didn’t just make up the whole story, this British citizen committed credit card fraud. So yes, it does look like someone did something illegal here.

The right wing has been pushing this bogus attack for months now; this is just the latest eruption of a fake outrage recycled from the 2008 election, when they made the exact same baseless claims.

ThinkProgress debunked the nonsense earlier this month, and pointed out the sheer hypocrisy of these charges, while Mitt Romney accepts millions of dollars from foreign sources — legally, thanks to the disastrous Citizens United ruling: Why the Obama Foreign Donation ‘Scandal’ Is Pure Fiction.

Ironically, it is conservative blogger Erick Erickson of redstate.com and CNN, who best demonstrates that the Obama campaign does not accept contributions from foreign donors. In a potentially illegal attempt to provide a point, Erickson acknowledges that he falsely claimed to be Boris Noridnikova of Moscow, Russia and attempted to donate $5 to the Obama campaign online. After giving a fake passport number, the contribution was ultimately rejected after a few days of processing.

The lack of scandal in this report does not, however, mean that foreign nationals may not be influencing U.S. elections. The Center for Public Integrity reported Friday that Restore Our Future, the pro-Romney super PAC, accepted a $1 million contribution from OdysseyRe of Connecticut, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canadian insurance and investment management giant Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited. Thanks to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 Citizens United ruling, this is legal — as long as no foreign nationals direct the spending.

And the pathetic little cover that foreign nationals can't direct the spending.

Hey, a big Chinese company that has complained about US regulations on silly things like poison in foods just gave five million to our PAC-- I wonder what issues they feel are important that we use the money on, if we want to see more of it?

On the other hand, it could be a real opportunity.

America remains the most important political entity in the world, and most certainly the most important military one, even if its era of economic dominance is passing. Citizens United has essentially declared that its political power is now for sale.

Sure, it costs a lot of money to buy a Presidency, probably more than most other interests care to spend. But it doesn't really cost that much to buy a House seat. It is well within the power of many interested groups to spend what it takes to purchase several seats in the House, which could then be used to direct American policy in a positive, non-Randian direction. Real climate policy, for example.

CNN keeps pushing the horse race meme:

Poll: Race for White House all tied up

With just over two weeks to go until Election Day, and Monday's presidential debate fast approaching, a new national poll taken after the second debate shows the race for the White House in a dead heat.

The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday shows both President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney with 47% support among likely voters. The survey's margin of error is plus or minus 3.43 percentage points for that group.

Is Pennsylvania a Swing State Again?

While Florida and Virginia have been slipping from the Democrats' grasp ever since the first debate, Obama supporters have been able to console themselves with Pennsylvania, whose 20 Electoral College votes seemed destined for the president's side. However, a recent Quinnipiac University poll says that Obama's lead in the Keystone State has shrunk to four points. Adding insult to injury is the come-from-behind campaign of GOP Senate candidate and coal millionaire Tom Smith: As Politico reports, Smith has erased incumbent Democratic Senator Bob Casey's double-digit lead and outspent him on the airwaves by about $5 million. (Smith spent $17 million of his own money.) Though Casey concedes it's a rather "unusual situation," he also points out that Pennsylvania is "much more of a 52-48 kind of state."

Todd Akin Has a New Way to Describe Claire McCaskill

Congressman Todd Akin, who most people never would have heard of had he not started in on "legitimate rape" back in August, is still terrible at not saying offensive things about women. This is especially true when it comes to his opponent, Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill. In September, Akin criticized McCaskill for being "unladylike." And yesterday, he ran this line by a group of supporters at a Springfield fund-raiser: "[McCaskill] goes to Washington, D.C., it’s a little bit like one of those dogs, 'fetch,'" he said before going on to accuse her of bringing higher taxes and increased bureaucracy to the state...or something. Honestly, it's pretty hard to pay attention after the "dog" part.

Conservative U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Sunday presidential candidate Mitt Romney was not wobbling on contraception and abortion.

Rubio said on NBC's "Meet the Press" Romney's pro-life credentials were never in doubt but he was also in favor of exceptions.

[...]

Rubio said Romney took issue with the Obama administration insisting the Catholic Church include contraception in their employee health insurance plans and opposed "Washington bureaucrats" dictating terms to employers.

At the same time, Romney favored exemptions only to companies and entities with long and established moral objections to contraception. Companies offering "fake" objections just to save money were not likely to obtain such exemptions, Rubio said.

"It has to be a real objection," Rubio said. "Certainly if they were faking the objection, I think they would be pilloried in public -- in public coverage of it."

This is just strange: NYT still hasn't corrected or clarified their weird article claiming a negotiation agreement with Iran but they are reporting on the reaction to their fake article.
Report on Iran Talks Reverberates on Sunday Shows

Foreshadowing what could be fierce lines of argument in Monday’s final presidential debate, spokesmen for the two candidates jousted on Sunday over whether the United States should seek to engage Iran in one-on-one talks over its nuclear program, or whether Tehran was simply playing for time.

The prospect of such talks was raised in a New York Times article posted on Saturday, and those who commented on Sunday morning television programs said that they had no specific details, or any confirmation, that such talks might be in the offing.
...
Precisely how the issue might play out in the final debate is unclear. While Mr. Romney has sharply criticized Mr. Obama’s handling of Iran – starting with his failure to side more vocally with the antigovernment protests there a few years ago – his specific plans to halt Iranian nuclear efforts do not appear to go much beyond what Mr. Obama has done.

Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, a Republican, who has helped Mr. Romney prepare for his debates, suggested that the report on Iran might be “another example of a national security leak from the White House,” though he offered no evidence.

13,000 Americans turn 18 every day.
10,000 baby boomers retire every day.

The experts say we need to create 125,000 jobs every month to keep up with population growth. But if we did really create that many new jobs every month and had to backfill another 250,000+ jobs that people retired from, who would fill all the openings?

Somehow, the conventional wisdom statistics about employment don't add up. Maybe that helps explain why they can't figure out why the unemployment rate is lower than what the rate of new job growth would indicate.

In fairness, the story could have elements that are true but the administration is denying them for legitimate national security reasons. But it does seem more likely that the Times ran with bad information and doesn't want to backtrack while the story is hot. If they turn out to be wrong, they'll bury a retraction deep in the paper in a week or two.

I guess the numbers overall come close to balancing, but AK-47 points out the key detail, if we don't have people trained to fill the openings that are there, the jobs aren't filled. Then the businesses will have to pay more for the ones with the needed skills. In fairness, the story could have elements that are true but the administration is denying them for legitimate national security reasons. re: #58 freetoken

Supposedly, the six question topics are known for Monday's "debate", and have been for over a week:

Easy to guess the debate, going down the list:

- Obama says America needs to be peacemaker and help other nations, Romney thinks America needs to try to revive its position, circa 1950s.

- Obama thinks we need to get out of Afghanistan and to put Pakistan on notice we will not tolerate it continuing to fuck with the Afghans, Romney will say we need to stay "however long it takes" to create some perfect version of Afghanistan.

- Obama touts Bibi's comments about Israel/US relations and says Iran needs to be treated firmly but fairly, Romney pushes "daylight" bit while promising to be further up Israel's ass and says we need to show "strength" to Iran.

- Obama touts OBL being dead and promises justice for Benghazi, Romney pushes more of the "terrorism" angle and how Al-Q is a big bad boogeyman again.

- Finally, Obama says America needs to put policies in place to bring jobs back from China while parrying its foreign policy ambitions, Romney pounds the "trade war" angle again and how he'll be "tough" with China.

I think I'll take exception to this part. Yes on the suburbanite part, but I think that Romney, like many real or faux neo-cons, do the chest beating in part for the female vote, at least for the not-Gloria-Allred type of female vote.

Please don't think that I'm trying to stereotype women as a class, but that there are real marketing techniques to appeal to insecurities, and Romney wants very, very much to project to women that he'll keep American families "safe".

The refrain that has been played on since 2008 is that your are not safe under Obama. That the boogeyman is going to come and get you, and Obama won't care because he's {playing golf | part of the sekrit takeover | 'cause libruls are weak sissies}.

Short of conducting a unilateral military strike or declaring war against the Islamic Republic, a Romney administration would be faced with the same legislative options on Iran as President Obama, who has already administered them.

Despite the partisan rhetoric and caricatures on both sides, there's likely to be very little change in Iran policy no matter who wins the election.

re: #70 Killgore Trout

It could possibly be a leak designed to make Mitt and the wingnuts freak out and do something stupid.

Or set up a buzz that Obama can use to set the stage for announcing the talks at the start of the debate.

If that's what it is, then mitt Romney needs to agree he'd attend any previously agreed to talks but also he needs to talk about Iran's track record of mendacity and make the case that he won't get bogged down, he'll strike a deal if an honest deal can be struck. Then Mitt should tout his negotiation skills, picked up from decades in the private sector.

The course I suggest would not eliminate the advantage Obama would gain from such an announcement, but it would reduce it and have Romney cast himself as "The Better Choice" instead of being a killjoy.

80 Charles Johnson  Sun, Oct 21, 2012 1:53:43pm

And can someone explain all this nonsense coming from R&R and the tea party about Obama not being a leader or showing leadership? I'm surprised, maybe I shouldn't, that no moderator in the debate has pressed Mittens about what this means....What is this amorphous "leadership" he says is not being practiced by the president? I'm not the greatest fan of Obama but what was he supposed to do with a congress dominated by people who see human intellect and science as a threat. Smart president trying to work with anti-intellectual congressmen/women isn't going to lead to anything. Are voters that dumb to buy into that garbage? Last I checked, the tGOPers in Congress with a 7% approval rating were against sending troops into Syria, now Mittens seems to think that we should be in Syria?....whose gonna pay for that since he's also touting his deficit reduction skills?

True. In the case of Iran and foreign policy in general, Mitt's real weakness is he offers very little different from Obama. There are some cosmetic differences in rhetoric but what little substance Mitt has offered is almost identical to Obama. However, the highly partisan moonbats tend to think of Mitt as a reckless warmonger. The winguts made jackasses out of themselves after the election by opposing their own policies once Obama adopted them. Moonbats will do the same.

I dunno. but I'm still betting its bullshit.

Could be. Allred hit the target pretty cleanly with Herman Cain, though. So anything is possible.

re: #133 Dark_Falcon

Yes, but I wanted to take special note that Allred is a noted bullshit artist, and is not to be believed. And I just wanted to get my two cents in.

That sounds like Romney.

146 Obdicut  Sun, Oct 21, 2012 4:21:10pm

I don't recall Obama saying something as stupid as declaring Russia to be our top geopolitical foe, either.

That was clownshoes Romney.

Jets - Patriots 23 all at the 2:00 warning. Weird conference this year. Going into today all four teams were 3-3...

To paraphrase you, Mitt Romney stands for nothing but himself, and is not to be trusted.

Because most stuff that comes out of his mouth is bullshit. and has been proven untrue by fact checkers .

152 Dark_Falcon  Sun, Oct 21, 2012 4:26:00pm

But the Jets still get the kick in to take a three point lead. Tom Brady is really going to have to shine to save New England this time!

In 2009 Romney condemned the Obama administrations tariff on Chinese automobile tires. He was actually right, that action cost the US economy $1 billion in increased product costs and another billion in retaliatory Chinese tariffs on US chicken. Now Romney want's to engage in a tariff war on China and label them a currency manipulator, as if we don't have far more to lose than they do.

154 Dark_Falcon  Sun, Oct 21, 2012 4:27:52pm

I also don't think Allred would want to take on Mitt Romney directly. He's bound to have a truckload of high-priced legal help to counter whatever she sends out. Suing him would be very tough.

China made a lot of tires for the recreational vehicle industry where they quickly became know as "China Bombs". Unbelievable number of blowouts on brand new tires. Very well worth it to keep them out of the country. Probably many lives saved.

If the objective is to 86 Romney's candidacy (and it succeeds), she could always drop the suit after the election.

Not to mention that any scandal on the presidential level would drag Romney completely off-message. And two weeks out from the election, that alone could cause the campaign to bleed out.

She's a lawyer, she gets paid to win cases. If she filed a suit knowing it was BS just to try to sink Romney, he could sue her and make things quite unpleasant. So I don't think she'd do that.

You're thinking in binary terms, she isn't going to file a suit. In most political cases she's paid to stand by a client while that client makes an accusation and presents evidence to back up that accusation. If anything goes down her role is to let the opposing campaign know that her client won't be easily intimidated into silence or a retraction.

My patience with China is nil.

We can find new trading partners, and encourage movement from China to friendly countries you need an economic boost, or back here in some cases. But China and its high-flying jackassery need to be brought to hell. Not just for our sakes, but for the sakes of the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and many of the bordering nations.

We still have more power over them than vice-versa.

Romney needs to get Condoleezza Rice stumping for him on foreign policy again, after all she did so well before... /

Condoleezza Rice, not being able to name any Obama Foreign Policy Failures on CBS:
O’Donnell: “Can you be specific about somewhere where you think President Obama has failed on foreign policy?”

Rice: “What we should do tonight, is talk about what a President Romney would mean for America. It’s not a time to look back, it’s a time to look forward. We have real challenges out there, in the Middle East, in Asia, in Europe, with our allies.”

O’Donnell: “But if President Obama isn’t doing anything wrong, then why change things?”

Rice: “It’s a question of what a President Romney would do and there is no doubt that the United States’ voice has been muted and when the United States’ voice is muted the world is a more dangerous place.

There's the old idealistic PGL, the one for whom real life considerations take a back seat to idealistic notions of fixing everything that's wrong with the world. Sorry but there's simply no way to engage in a trade war with China and not tank the US consumer price index, confidence, cost of living and overall economy.

re: #163 goddamnedfrank

At some point, we have to be willing to ween ourselves off. At the very least, do some laws giving a tax penalty for having jobs in China, and a tax encouragement to move them.

This isn't idealism to me. In the past several years, China has proven itself to be an aggressive, untrustworthy nation.

To use a Medieval II: Total War analogy, their reputation is Despicable.

Yes. I do support Obama in this campaign but I do not donate any money simply because I'm forbidden to. I'm a Dutch citizen who has a lot more knowledge about the general way the country is run than Johnny Redneck who would vote republican from birth if he could.

We still got to handle this one on our own, although your insight is much appreciated around here.

And, last I checked, also deeply down in the polls.

The Duggars (you know, the couple with 18 or 19 kids) are apparently stumping for Akin. I'm not exactly sure how many levels of cognitive dissonance is at play here.
